TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK DOHA PATIENT care improve- ment activities led by health- care teams at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have received a boost with the Clinical Care Improvement Training Programme (CCITP), which ca help HMC clinicians to execute clinical care improvement projects. In recognition of the excel- lent work of 28 healthcare teams at the HMC under the programme, the CCITP won the newly-introduced Managing Director’s Award under HMC’s Stars of Excellence staff awards and recognition programme. HMC Managing Director Dr Hanan al Kuwari said the award was introduced to recognise “exceptional teams and projects that define innovation and com- mitment to the highest stan- dards of patient care and service delivery.” “The CCITP has had wide- spread impact across the organisation. It is a project- based approach to teaching clinical quality improve- ment and emphasises skills development in addition to project achievement. Under the programme, clinicians are taught practical tools to use in quality improvement initiatives, along with train- ing in leadership, communi- cation and research,” Kuwari said. About 90 clinicians from 14 departments have been trained under the pro- gramme, which was imple- mented in 2012. The CCITP aims through an environ- ment of continuous learning to foster HMC physicians who are well-versed in and passionate about quality improvement. The pro- gramme is designed to give physicians hands-on experi- ence in using the tools of quality improvement through six days of theoreti- cal and practical sessions, as well as intensive small- group coaching. Director of Medical Education and program leader Dr Abdullatif al Khal expressed his appreciation for the support given to the programme by senior corpo- rate leaders, hospital med- ical directors, chairpersons and heads of clinical depart- ments. “Quality is a never- ending journey and we are grateful for the corporation- wide support to our efforts to promote the involvement of HMC clinicians in continu- ous quality improvement. The programme is now in its third cycle and aspires to become bigger and better.” Programme mentors include experts from HMC’s Medical Administration and Medical Education Departments and quality improvement experts from Partners HealthCare of the Harvard system in Boston. Dr Shakil Ahmed, assis- tant medical director at HMC and one of the lead mentors, noted that the pro- gramme supported the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International LLC (ACGME- I), an international body which assesses and advances the quality of resident physi- cians’ education through accreditation. He said the clinicians learned soft skills of nego- tiation and communica- tion with their colleagues in order to move the proj- ects forward. “They also learned that, to successfully carry out clini- cal process improvements, it is essential to work as a multidisciplinary team, which comprises nurses, pharmacists, physiothera- pists and other clinical dis- ciplines,” he said. Addressing a press meet on Thursday, Alfred Charles Snider of the World Debate Institute said that the Western world needed to communicate effectively with the Arab world in order to shed misgiv- ings about each other and QatarDebate Center being an active leader in communication could help Western delegates achieve that skill. An effective, constructive dialogue between the West and the Arab world would facilitate better under- standing of each other and help do away with misgivings on both the sides. The Arab voice must be heard and it can happen only when one understands their language.” Another participant Bojana Skrt Proet Contra from Institute for Culnre of Dialogue, Slovenia, said that debate promotes critical think- ing and benefits large number of people in schools, universities and government offices. She said “I am sure that Arab teachers and scholars are involved in the process of spread- ing the message which will help to reach out to millions in the Arab world. This event, held in Arabic and English will be a catalyst to spread this message loud and clear.” Associate Professor of Communication at Florida Atlantic University David Cratis Williams said “There is a strong tradition of rhetoric in the Arab World but it is not much known outside. The con- ference will serve as a platform to spread it across the world. The con- ference will pave way for construc- tive and peaceful interaction between the societies and bring about positive changes in future.” This is the first time the conference is being held both in English and Arabic. According to the QatarDebate officials, around 40 countries are participating in the conference with a significant number of the participants from the Arab world.
