Fourth Day Journal
September 2021
4th Day - September
On September 11, 2021, our nation will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks
where 2,977 people were killed. Across our nation people will countdown on a timeline we all
know so well and remember the events of that day and those who needlessly perished. I recently
read an article about a man that was seen in the gym on a stair climber wearing 60 pounds
of firefighter gear climbing the length of 110 floors to pay tribute to the 343 firefighter victims on
that day.
Firemen everywhere will remember will participate in the stair-stepper tribute so they won’t forget
and so we will remember. As Christians it is equally important for us to remember. Looking back
across the timeline of your faith you will see those events where He has interceded in your life, or
where He chipped away at your character in order to help you grow.
“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which
you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; ” (Isaiah 51:1, NIV)
Reflecting on your faith journey will not only help you see how you have been transformed from
your beginning. You also find that He’s remained
the same at each tick on your personal
timeline.

This month we will all remember those that died in New York City, the Pentagon, and Shanks-
ville, Pennsylvania. We can also remember our journey in relationship with Christ and how He
lovingly endures forever.

Coming Soon – NCAE Board Elections!
Have you ever thought about serving on the Board that guides our Community in doing great
things that make a difference in our local churches and our Community? Have you served on
two Emmaus teams that facilitate our weekends? Do you know an Emmaus Brother or Sister
who has served on two teams who would do a wonderful job serving on the Board? Now is
the time to forward your name, or the name of an Emmaus Brother or Sister, to become an
important part of the future of our Community.
The upcoming year will be an exciting one. We are sure everyone is more than ready to get
back together at in-person Ultreyas and restart our weekends. The Board is currently working
on several ideas to return to in-person events and energize our weekends in ways that allow the
Pilgrims to return from the mountain ready for sponsoring and teaming. Most importantly, the
Board is developing ideas to engage the local churches by connecting with the pastors to
communicate how having their members attend an NCA Emmaus weekend can motivate their
members to become leaders in their churches. You will hear about some of the weekend
changes at our Special Community Meeting on September 18th. This work will continue into
next year and into the years ahead as the Board generates new ideas to keep the NCA
Emmaus Community vital and relevant. Please be aware that given the current COVID
positivity numbers in Prince William and Fairfax County, the September 18th meeting will
be conducted virtually. We will also briefly talk about the upcoming Board elections and an-
swer your questions at this Special Community Meeting.
4
At the annual meeting (currently scheduled for November), the Community will vote on a new
class of Board members to serve a two-year term. This year we will be electing two women,
three men, and one SD. If you, or someone you know, is eligible and willing to serve on the
Board, please forward your/their name to the email below. Note: If you are nominating someone
for the Board, please talk with them about serving before you forward their name.
The Board asks that you seriously consider seeking nomination to serve in the leadership of our
Community. Your time, talents, and energy would be greatly appreciated.

Pastor Eric, Spiritual Director
God Will Provide for Himself a Lamb
We all know the story of Abraham, how he took his only son Isaac to Jerusalem and was prepared
to offer him as a burnt offering to the Lord on Mount Moriah. They traveled for three days until
Abraham saw the place in the distance. As he and his son carried the wood and fire for the
sacrifice, Isaac asked his father a question:
“My Father? Look, the fire and the wood, but where
is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham
responded: “My son, God will provide for Himself the
lamb for a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:7-8, NKJV).
Soon enough, Abraham looked up, and there in a thicket, he
saw a ram caught by its horns. So, Abraham called that place, “The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said
to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided (Genesis 22:13-14).
The explanation is obvious: God provided His lamb for the atonement, this being Christ, the Lamb
who was slain from the creation of the world. There is one problem. In Hebrew, it says God will
see for Himself a Lamb (yireh lo). The scripture goes on to say: And Abraham named that site
Adonai-yireh, whence the present saying, “On the mount of the LORD there is vision” (Sefaria).
Why is this distinction important to understand? We will find out.
Let us move forward about four hundred years in time to the Exodus from Egypt. The Israelites
were encamped at the base of Mount Sinai, preparing for the Lord to descend from heaven. And
they saw with their own eyes what the LORD had done to the Egyptians.
6
And God spoke the words of the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. It is written that When
He finished speaking, “all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the
sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled
and stood afar off” (Exodus 20:18).
Here once again, is a problem with the translation. In Hebrew, it reads: “And all the people saw
(ro’im) the voices and the torches, the sound of the shofar, and the smoking mountain, and the
people saw (Yareh) and trembled; so they stood from afar.”
It says they saw voices and torches. And they saw the sound of the shofar. How can one hear
sounds?
Rabbi Akiva insists that the verse must be read literally. In other words, they saw the voices. He
says: “They saw that which is usually heard, and they heard that which is usually seen.” He
continues with his explanation:
“The experience at Sinai was much more than just receiving ten moral instructions for life. Sinai
was a spiritual revelation that changed the way the Jews perceived the meaning of existence.
They heard that which is usually seen. In other words, the physical matter, which is usually per-
ceived as absolute reality, became an abstract idea, while spirituality, that which is usually
heard, became real and obvious.”
Going back to the story of Abraham, we can see the similarity between these two encounters.
God, who is spirit, appeared to humanity in a visible and tangible form; as it is written, “And the
Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld (have seen) His glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Later, we read, “The Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice
came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22).
Once again, in the words of the rabbi, “The physical matter, which is usually perceived as
absolute reality, became an abstract idea, while spirituality, that which is usually heard, became
real and obvious.”
But there is a deeper meaning to the Hebrew word Yireh. It is a combination of three words—
seeing, fear, and awe. There is no single word in the English dictionary that conveys the same
depth. In English, the translators have attempted to recreate it through the word trembling.
We can take this understanding even further. On the day Yeshua was crucified, we read, “So
when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and
the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of
God!’” (Matthew 27:54).
And when Christ returns, we will see a picture of Mount Sinai once again. This time, however, all
humanity will see the throne of God; as it is written, “For the Lord Himself will descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet (shofar) of God” (1
Thessalonians 4:16).
“Then the temple of God was opened in
heaven, and the ark of His covenant was
seen in His temple. And there were
lightnings, noises, thunderings, an
earthquake, and great hail”
(Revelation 11:19).

Spiritual Director Continued:
Like the Israelites at Mount Sinai, all humanity will one day see what is usually heard and hear
that which is usually seen. And they will Yireh, tremble with awe and fear at the presence of the
LORD, for it is written, “I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in
righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an
oath” (Isaiah 45:23). As Paul said, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in
heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).
At the return of Christ, we shall also see that which is usually heard and hear that which is usually
seen. Therefore, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12). For,
“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced
Him” (Revelation 1:7).

From the NCAE MD
De Colores, Family!
Sigh. We meet you here again, and say “Hold on!”
We appreciate you supporting the recordings for Ultreya
and the feedback. Thank you. It’s a tough time but we are
keeping our joy, we are also finding peace as we continue to
seek His face. He guides us, the evidence of His goodness is all over this community.
September Ultreya will be lead by Jerry Wills. Kudos to Jerry who is a delight to work with and a
treasure in the music world. Chrysalis will play a large part in this month’s meeting, and we know
their young love for Christ is an encouragement and empowerment for us all.
Psalm 33:1 (NIV) “Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him.
Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-striped lyre. Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.”
(MSG) “Good people, cheer God! Right-living people sound best when praising. Use guitars to
reinforce your Hallelujahs! Play his praise on a grand piano! Invent your own new song to him;
give him a trumpet fanfare.”
We stay prayerful as we await meeting in person, and pray the recordings will be meaningful
and be an enjoyable atmosphere for worship..
We love you.
