President's Foreword

In my second term as your President , it is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you all to the Fourth Rally of The Chasewater Light Railway Society. This year's event has attracted some 160 vintage vehicles, each of which is a credit to the traditions, skills and ingenuity of the craftsmen of by-gone years.

To the Exhibitors who have travelled from all parts of England, the Organisers and Officials of the Rally , I extend a special message of appreciation for allowing us all the pleasure, nostalgia and memories of transport modes from the past. Finally, to you all, I extend my best wishes for an enjoyable day and a safe journey home at the end of what I am sure will be a very memorable occasion.

From the Rally Secretary Dear Reader,

Reg Bassett June 1980

May I take this opportunity of wish ing all our exhibitors and visitors a warm welcome to our Fourth Annual Steam and Vintage Vehicle Rally .

This year's event is the biggest and most ampitious rally we have so far held. We have tried to obtain a varied and interesting selection of vel'licles to please everyone. On Sunday, we are combining with the Chasewater Power Boat Club to entertain some handicapped children from the West Midlands area, and we would be most grateful if everyone would help to make it a great day for them.

We would ask that all our visitors co-operate by remaining behind the rope barriers when looking at the various exhibits, and by refraining from climbing on vehicles without the owner's consent. I am sure they will be only too pleased to give any details about their respective vehicles.

If anyone has any comments or constructive criticism to make on the rally, please tell myself or any of the mars halls so that we can make next year's rally a bigger and more successful event.

Last but not least, I would like to say a personal thank-you to my wife , Janet, for her patience and assistance, and to my very good friend and colleague, Bob Si berry, for his valuable assistance on the typewriter. Even though he is a young seventy-odd , he is one of our keenest workers.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable day and will attend again next year. R. J. Wormington,

Rally Secretary.

The Chasewater Light Railway Company Chairman: J. K. Macmillan . Directors : D. Cartwright , L Hodgkinson. C. E. Ives, A. E. Pearson, J . Selway. Secretary : M. Webb. General Manager: D. Cartwright.

The Chasewater Light Railway is a real example of preservation in th e " raw". Unlike most preserved standard gauge railways . which have taken over from British Railways branch lines complete with stations . tracks . etc and then managed to get financial backing in some form or other Chasewater is a complete " Do-it-yourself railway" because. when we moved here. there was absolutely nothing The tracks finished approximately 3f.4. mile away at the ·present end of our passenger journey We had to spend the first years here lifting track and sleepers by hand from disused sidings . and then moving them and relaying to provide the running tracks of today

We constructed our own compounds . station platform . machine shop. and put in our own water supply and drainage system . besides trying to restore our locomotives and rolling stock . All this has been done without any outside help or contractors . and our next major task is to construct a locomotive shed at the end of the permanent way storage compound which you will see about 300 yards from , the station .

When it is all finished we shall be able to say that ''WE HAVE BUlL TOUR OWN RAILWAY" and look back with pride and satisfaction at what we have achieved .

SORRY! WE ARE SORRY THAT, FOR THE TIME BEING, THE TRAIN JOURNEY

IS STILL RESTRICTED TO ABOUT HALF A MILE EACH WAY. AS SOON AS WE GET THE GO-AHEAD FROM THE INSPECTING OFFICER OF RAILWAYS, WE SHALL BE RUNNING TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE LAKE- ABOUT ONE AND A QUARTER MILES - AND NEXT

YEAR THE LINE WILL BE OPEN FOR A TOTAL OF TWO MILES.

AUTOJUMBLE AND SALES STALLS

There is the usual selection of Autojumble Stalls usually associated with these rallies where one may find that elusive spare part for a cherished vintage vehicle or even some nick-nack for a modern car. Sales stands range from knitted goods made by the vintage enthusiast's wife to complete collectors' items in the model range. A browse around may produce some interesting finds.

STATIONARY ENGINE DISPLAY Macclesfield and District Stationary Engine Club. Midland Oil Engine Club. Potteries Vintage Machinery Club.

On display in this section is a selection of stationary engines which were the main source of power before the days of electricity. They were used extensively on farms for numerous jobs including driving chaff cutters, water pumps and milking machines. In industry they were used for driving generators, lathes and all types of machinery too numerous to mention.

The engines have been restored by their owners with many parts having to be made from scratch , as there are no spares available.

Most of these exhibits have been brought to the rally by members of the above clubs , and have been organised by Tony Green and Roy Tideswell to whom we offer our grateful thanks.

Sponsors Wanted! The Society is looking for sponsors for our Fifth Annual Steam and

Vintage Vehicle Rally to be held at the present venue in 1981. Up to date, the Society has been able to finance the event but , as each year comes along, we find that costs rise very sharply. More and more vehicles are attending the rally each year, and some of them come from places as far afield as Dorset and Scotland . With inflation increasing costs each year. the amount paid out for transporting vehicles to the venue also shows a rapid increase.

The endeavour of the Society is to make the event a popular one with the general public and also to give the opportunity to vehicle owners to "show off" their vehicles. For exhibitors of new commercial vehicles, it gives them a chance to advertise their vehicles to the many haulage contractors who attend these rallies.

We are looking for either an individual sponsor or for a number of sponsors who are prepared to help. Can we hope that amongst our readers there may be the sponsor we are looking for?

Please contact the Organising Secretary at the rally or write to : Barry Bull, The Secretary, Chasewater Railway Society, Brownhills Pleasure Park , Brownhills, Nr. Walsall.

WHEEL CHA GING CONTEST Sponsored by the Goodyear Tyre Co. Ltd .

In this contest, the competitor, on the word 'GO', will pick up a jack, a bar, etc., and sprint to his vehicle. He will proceed to 'jack' the vehicle, up and remove a wheel. He will refit a spare wheel on to the vehicle, placing the wheel taken off the axle on to the spare wheel stand. He then removes the jack and sprints back to his starting position.

The prize for this event will be awarded to the competitor who correctly changes the wheels in the fastest time.

STEAM RALLIES ARE DANGEROUS! Please obey the Marshals' directions and

be extra careful when near moving vehicles.
