Fr. Terry Keehan I am regularly inspired by a couple of gen-erations of Americans who formed a strength of character and a level of resolve in the face of two tremendous challenges, the Great Depression and WWII. I am in touch with their legacy because I am remembering them as I preside at their funer-als. I have a certain amount of sadness because the generation is literally dying. They forged last-ing traits of heart and soul that formed the back-bone of tremendous worldwide advancements in almost every industry following World War II. They grew up quickly and they survived a lot to fl ourish. From challenge, violence, hopelessness, despair and confl ict they brought about new life. From suff ering and death came accomplishment, innovation, growth and success. From a lot of death came new and newer life. We are in the midst of a challenge. It is a worldwide pandemic that has disrupted almost every aspect of our lives. It has caused death and many concerns. It has brought about fear and anxiety and, most signifi cantly, a persistent uncer-tainty that we all wallow in. In the midst of this challenge, the previous gen-erations give us examples of resolve and unity. The comparison of our challenges with theirs is certainly not accurate on many levels, but needing the inspiration of new life is. We here at Holy Family have a dramatic symbol that hangs in our sanctuary reminding us of new life. Perhaps because your presence at church has been limited you might not appreciate it or use it as a focus as much these days, but I write today to remind you of the hope of new life that our beautiful cross calls us to. Here are some examples of the positive, new life already manifest in our community despite a great challenge: • We have an unbelievably dedicated reopen-ing team that has worked really hard at imple-menting procedures in compliance with State and Archdiocesan directives for health and safety. We sought your feedback regarding our live Masses and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Comments included feeling safe and appreciating our diligence in such a public gathering. There ex-ists now a diff erent form of sanctity. Mass is more deliberate which brings about a diff erent form of the sacred. There is a more intentional nature to our prayer now and it doesn’t appear as rote.

Making reservations also makes a statement of your desire to come and pray together. • I have noticed that eye contact at the time of receiving communion is stronger and more genuine. I appreciate that so many of you do, in fact, make your own fl at little altar with your hands upon which the consecrated host can be placed by us Eucharistic Ministers in a reverent and healthy manner. There is a deeper appreciation for the Eucharist simply because it is not as available. • We are in a strong fi nancial position as we begin a new fi scal year and your generosity has made this a reality. Our Easter collection reached budget, despite the fact that we didn’t have Mass-es. We have seen an increase in electronic givers because some more of you realize how signifi cant and effi cient this form of giving is. Please continue to support us as our expenses will rise now that we are opening the building regularly for Mass, baptisms, weddings, funerals, adoration, reconcili-ation and private prayer. • Our Operations team has cut expenses much more than expected, and in the process learned about future procedures to continue ex-pense reduction. • The virtual Spirit Camp was a lot of work for our Family & Teen Faith staff but turned out to be a huge success. 170 families participated from Holy Family alone and we collaborated with sev-eral other parishes. • Kid Church has actually grown in participa-tion thanks to some creative and inspiring virtual presentations. • Holy Family Catholic Academy has truly dis-tinguished us in our e-learning curriculum in a very innovative manner. • Our SCC’s are more involved than ever and groups report meeting more than usual via Zoom. • Many of our teens meet every Thursday eve-ning to share “What’s on Your Mind.” We are seeing that our ministry can be done in other ways and, in general, this challenge has stimulated some very creative adaptations and additions to what we continue to off er as a com-munity. In general, many of you have expressed a deeper appreciation for Holy Family because of restricted access on a number of levels. In a chal-lenge, new life is certainly appearing.

Preparing for Next Week...We invite you to read the scripture readings for August 9,

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and then refl ect on these questions:

1. Elijah did not fi nd God in the wind, the earthquake and the fi re. Why in times of turmoil do we sometimes not hear God’s voice?

2. Elijah did hear God as a whisper. Why is it that we frequently hear God in the silence, after the turmoil subsides?

3. Although Paul was able to convert many Gentiles, the Jewish people were re-luctant to hear his message. Why do you think it was so diffi cult for the Israelites to convert?

4. As humans, we all experience times of “little faith.” Why do we doubt?

5. In what ways has God surprised you when you did not expect it?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONAs a follower of Christ, what risks have you taken especially in the face of tempta-tion or fear? Do you keep your eyes on Christ modeling his courage when chal-lenged to stand up against injustice? If not, why not?

The Called & The Chosen: Virtual Evening of Reflection with Fr. James Martin, SJ & Jonathan Roumie

Friday, August 21, 2020

6:30-9:30 pm Cost: $30

Fr. James Martin, SJ Fr. Martin is a Jesuit priest, editor-at-large at the Jesuit magazine America, consultor to the Vatican’s Dicastery of Communication, and author of numerous books including the New York Times best selling Jesus: A Pilgrimage and My Life with the Saints and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything. He is a frequent commentator in the na-tional and international media, having appeared on such diverse out-lets as The Colbert Report, The Wall Street Journal, History Channel, BBC, and Vatican Radio. Before entering the Jesuits in 1988, he graduated from Wharton School of Business.

Jonathan Roumie Jonathan Roumie is an actor-director-producer & musician, best known for his groundworking role in the popular series, “The Cho-sen,” the #1 crowdfunded media project in history, currently streaming in every country on the planet! He serves as VP on the boards of two non-profit media companies, Catholics in Media As-sociates and the G.K. Chesterton Theatre Co., and was recently nominated for Papal Knighthood by the Order of St. Gregory the Great.

Who is Jesus? This can be a complicated question. Around the world, Jesus is seen as a teacher, prophet, holy man, wonder-worker, or the Son of God. Who is Jesus TO YOU? This is an essential question for anyone on a spiritual journey with Christ. Wherever you are in your journey with Jesus, this is a retreat to reflect on His call to follow Him (for the first time or anew) and the obstacles that may keep us from freely responding to His call. In this on-line retreat, Fr. James Martin, SJ responds from his person-al experience and give an Ignaatian perspective on sensing and responding to God’s call. Jonathan Roumie, the actor playing Jesus on The Chosen TV series, reflects on his own personal calling and on the call of the biblical characters dramatized in the series (viewing this series is suggested prior to attending the retreat). Retreatants will be invited to reflect on who the person of Jesus is in their own life and how they are called to follow Christ. To register online go to www.jesuitretreat.org, or call 847-381-1261

Family FaithReopening Plan

2020-2021

Key among the initiatives in Family & Teen Faith over the past five years have been an emphasis on

Empowering personal initiative and servant leadershipFostering a culture of Christian serviceCultivating a culture of Christian witnessEngaging the whole family in the catechetical processIncorporating digital learning strategies

These efforts, along with what we have learned since March, now allow us to provide families with an engaging online Family Faith Formation program. Families will be provided everything they need to share their faith with each other, strengthening the deep bonds they share.

Knowing that personal connection and a sense of belonging are important components of being part of a faith community; we propose the following.

We encourage families that know each other and do socialize on a limited basis during this time, consider doing some of the lessons or activities together. FTF Faith will generate a list of possible ideas for how to do this and post them on the FTF Facebook page. If, and when, the public safety conditions improve, FTF will plan some group activities at Holy Family for smaller groups of families or children.

More details provided in FTF July Update emailed Tuesday 7/28 Details on Teen Faith Classes and Sacramental Prep next week.

Holy Family is no stranger to the real time changes needed in faith formation.

Our reputation as an innovative and progressiveCatholic Community has made us a front-runnerin engaging our children and teens in small Christiancommunities focused on personal faith sharing, shared service, and prayer. The Family & Teen Faith staff andcatechists, have over the years advanced new responses to America’s Changing Religious Landscape, by continually seeking out the feedback of parents and participants, and monitoring the latest research and best practices available on the spiritual development of children and teens and the changing parameters of religious identity.

Words of Wisdom from Franciscan Richard Rohr’s Daily MeditationFrom the Center for Action and Contemplation

Wisdom in Times of Crisis Our Spiritual HealthThursday, July 9, 2020

Brian McLaren, a member of the CAC Living School faculty, reminds us why it matters that we pay attention to our health, not only physically but spiritually and ethically as well. In these challenging, diffi cult times, we are discovering a wisdom that we needed all along, and that wisdom is that we are all connected. We are not separate. We used to think that we caught diseases as individuals: "I'm sick; you're not." But now we realize, no, we catch diseases as individuals who are part of families, and families who are part of cities, and cities that are part of states and nations. We realize now that our whole species can become infected, and that our whole globe can be changed because of our interconnectedness. . . Maybe this is also an opportunity for us to become enlightened about some other viruses that have been spreading and causing even greater damage, without being acknowledged: social and spiritual viruses that spread among us from individual to individual, from generation to genera-tion, and are not named. We don’t organize against them, and so they continue to spread and cause all kinds of sickness [and death]. Social and spiritual viruses like racism, white supremacy, human supremacy, Chris-tian supremacy, any kind of hostility that is spread, based on prejudice and fear. What would happen if we said, as passionate as we are about being tested for coronavirus, we all wanted to test ourselves for these social and spiritual viruses that could be lurking inside of us? And then, when I come into your presence, I, in some way, infl ict this virus on you. I make you suff er. What an awesome opportunity for us to say and begin to pray that we would be healed and cleansed, not just of a physical virus, but of these other invisible viruses that are such a huge and devastating part of human history. . . . In this pandemic, many of us are nostalgic for the old normal. We want to get back to our favorite coff ee shop, our favorite restaurant, our church service. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with so many of those de-sires for the old normal. But I’d like to make a proposal. If we are wise in this time, we will not go back unthinkingly to the old normal. There were problems with that old normal many of us weren’t aware of. The old normal, when you look at it from today’s perspective, was not so great, not something to be nostalgic about, without also being deeply critical of it. As we experience discomfort in this time, let’s begin to dream of a new normal, a new normal that addresses the weaknesses and prob-lems that were going unaddressed in the old normal. If we’re wise, we won’t go back; we’ll go forward.
