St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656, in the Mohawk village of Osserne-non. Her mother was an Algonquin, who was captured

by the Mohawks and who took a Mohawk chief for her husband. Her name, Kateri, is the Mohawk form of Catherine, which she took

from St. Catherine of Siena. St. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 21,

2012. She is the patroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile

and Native Americans.

Please be generous in this week’s second collection for the Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people

lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are strug-gling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consid-er how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More in-formation about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be

found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
