The name given first to the small area around the town of Assur on the Tigris in Upper Mesopotamia, and then much later to the vast empire that the rulers of Assur acquired through conquering their neighbours on all sides. At its height in the 9th-c and 8th-c BC, the Assyrian Empire stretched from the E Mediterranean to Iran, and from the Persian Gulf as far N as the mountains of E Turkey. The empire was destroyed in an uprising of Medes and Babylonians in 612 BC.One of the most important cities of ancient Assyria, located E of the Tigris, and the site of royal residences from c.11th-c BC. It was founded in pre-historic times, although some Biblical legends associate its origin with Nimrod, and the temple of Ishtar is noted there in the Code of Hammurabi. It was at its height of importance in the 8th-7th-c BC under Sennacherib, but fell in 612 BC to the Medes and Persians. Its royal libraries, containing thousands of clay tablets, are one of the best surviving sources for ancient Mesopotamian history.

HISTORY OF ASSYRIAN KINGDOM

Founded at the pre-historic times came to the zenith consideringthe power and territories in the 9th and 8th century BC.

Nineve the most important city of ancient Assyria, located E of the Tigris, was the site of royal residences from BC.11th Century, until itsfall in 612 BC to the Medes and Persians.

Its royal libraries,containing thousands of clay tablets, are some of the best surviving sources for ancient history.

Ancient city of Babylon

– It was one of the glorious cities, according to the writings of Herodotus

– The city was fourteen miles square, river Euphrates running from north to south thru the city.

– The walls were made 350 feet high and 87 feet wide, with 250 watch towers 100 feet high over the walls. The city

surrounded by deep water moats which made any attack difficult.

– City was having self-sufficient provisions for 20 years in case of any siege. It was even for the Mede- Persians informidable for many months.

The manner God revealed

• Daniel 2:1 And in (BC.605)

• the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams,

• Wherewith his spirit was troubled,

• and his sleep brake from him.

The mixed metal Image

• Daniel 2:31-34 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

• This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

The destruction of it

• Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.


FOUR KINGDOMS(Interpretation of the dream)

• Daniel 2:37-40 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

• And after thee shall arise another kingdom

inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

• And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.


FOUR KINGDOMS(Dream and effect)

Daniel 2:29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.

(The thoughts of the future troubles the mind; revelation of the future

takes away the sleep of the rulers of world)

Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

(Future of the world is revealed to us thru His Word;

understanding of the fulfilled prophecies increase hope)

Psalms 127:2 He giveth his beloved sleep.

(What Dreams are? Ecc.5: 3; 7; Visions? Dan.2:19; 7: 1)


FOUR KINGDOMS(Daniel in his night visions)

In night vision to Daniel

• Daniel 7:2-3 Daniel spake and said,

• I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.

• Dan.7:4 Lion with wings• Dan.7:5 Bear with 3 ribs..• Dan.7:6 Leopard with.. • Dan.7:7 Dreadful beast

• Daniel 7:3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.

• Great Sea (Mediterranean) beside promise land form the part to the four world kingdoms.

• Rev.17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest,… are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

(The kingdoms came out from the agitations of the nations. The four great empires all ruled over Jerusalem. Assyrians took only the Northern kingdom, Judah was spared.

Any other kingdoms ruled were only part of the forth kingdom)

Same but different manner

• To Nebuchadnezzar given as Idol glittering, but lifeless, declining in values, cannot mix,

• Finally to be destroyed fully, and taken away to the winds.

• But to Daniel given as wild beasts, that devour each other.

(fierce, having no kindness, subdue, devour each other and live as in general, the end death and decay)

• Daniel 2:37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

• His power and decree was unquestionable (Dan.2:2-6)

(Lion the king of the forest, in power, and strength; the wings the added speed in attack and conquers- was the sign of empire)

• Jeremiah 27: 6-7 And now have I given all these lands into the hand

of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of

the field have I given him also to serve him. And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son's son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

• Jeremiah 25:12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity.

• Isaiah 45:1-2 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of

kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall

not be shut;

• Daniel 5: 30-31 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

(Prophet Isaiah prophesied 230 years before by name-Is. 45: 1)

FOUR KINGDOMS(Origin of Mede Persians)

The origin of Mede Persians– The decline of Assyria paved the way for the power of Mede- Persians. They came to power when Medes captured Asshur, the capital city of Assyria in BC.612 two years later in BC.610 with the help of Chaldeans captured Nineve the major city of the Assyrian Empire.

– When Babylonian Empire got weakened, Persians become more powerful and at the time of Cyrus II, conquered Media In BC.549 and combined the two countries in to Mede-Persian Empire. Mede-Persians grew stronger and conquered the Babylonia.

– Except the city of Babylon and finally (as fulfillment city fall in BC.538- Isaiah prophesied 175 years before (Isa.13: 17-19) and specially about Medes-

(Isa.21: 1) Further Jeremiah also prophesied of the destruction of Babylon by Medes and Persian (Jere.51: 11; 28) fallen to the hands of Cyrus II. – They held the power over the whole of Middle East till BC.330; until Alexander the great (It was a twin nation empire- like the chest and hands)

Mede- Persian empire

– After Babylon came Mede Persian-Ruled 208 years.

– They were generous to the Jewish to return (2.Chr.36:22-23; Ezra.1: 1-4) and to rebuild temple

– Like the bear slow but subtle, not in vigor but attacked with the large army and subdued.

– The three ribs in the mouth seen are the Babylon, Egypt, and Asia minor -the three kingdoms- subdued)

(Again to Daniel in vision was given as the Ram (8: 2-4)

Probably Ahasuerus was the king who lead armies against the Greek - Dan.11:2)

• Daniel 8:4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

FOUR KINGDOMS(Origin of Greek empire)

Origin of Greek Empire

– Macedonia was a small country of Greece, had little promise of

becoming a world empire. But was succeeded over Mede-Persian

Empire (BC.536- 330) as a world power. (We read not much about

this empire in the Bible as existed at a period between Malachi

and Matthew; but much is prophesied in Daniel Ch. 11)

– Dan.8:20-21 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the

kings of Media and Persia. And the rough goat is the king of Grecia:

and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

(Alexander the great, son of Philip BC.330-323; conquered the

known world up to India; died at age of 33 with a fever

– After him the kingdom was divided among his four generals-Dan.8: 22)

– Daniel 8: 5-7. And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not

the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

– And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his

power.

– And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he

cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

Dan.7:6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

(Leopard is the fastest of all. The wings added the speed of attack. The spots shows the nations and languages it included)

• After his death the kingdom was divided among his four generals (Dan.8: 22; 11: 4)

• Rest of the history of Egypt and Syria we read in Daniel Ch.11 (Reads as south and north kingdom)

• Dan. Ch.11- Inevitable to study the prophecy compared to the history- shows the accuracy of the Bible


FOUR KINGDOMS(Origin of Roman empire)

The Roman empire• The fourth kingdom (BC168 - till…end of this time)

– By name Rome is not mentioned in the Scripture as an empire, yet from history it is of much our concern as the forth empire.

– Its political power began around BC.250 continued some way till the final ruler was killed in AD.1453 by Turks, so had the longest span of almost 1700 years. Same manner it was greatest for its territorial and political power.

– Though by BC 30 had reached zenith of its power, considered as a world power from BC.168. Unlike the other empires we are not reading the end of it; but on the other hand we reads about a revived empire of “Ten federation nation and a wicked dictator- the world leader- to come” (Dan.7: 7; 24) at the end times.

– The final destruction can only happen with the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

• Daniel 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

The history of Roman empire

– Origin of Rome goes to Romulus who become the first king (BC.753)

(From the state of a small country began its growth)

– Rome’s contact to Asia was by the conquest over Antiochus the great-the battle of Magnesia BC.190 (invited by Jews against Antiochus)

– Judea became subject to Rome. Pompey reduced the Selucian kingdom to a province.BC.63

– Caesar was murdered by his enemies- BC.44

– Octavion (Augustus- as title) become the first emperor-BC.44

– During Augustus- Christ was born (Luke 2: 1-4)


FOUR KINGDOMS(Forth empire- The Roman empire)

– During Tiberius- Christ was crucified (Lk.3:1-30)– James was martyred during Claudius (Acts.12:1-2)

– To Nero Paul made appeal (Acts.25:11)– Titus (later emperor) destroyed Jerusalem –AD.70– Was divided as eastern and Western - AD.395

– West fall to Goth Odoacer in Ad.476 (Merged to the European nations)

– Eastern continued till AD.1453 (Last king was killed by Turks and took Constantinople)

End of the times Rome will be revived once again; from where Anti-christ the final world ruler comes

• Daniel 2:34 thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

• Daniel 2:35 and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.


FOUR KINGDOMS(Promise of the kingdom to come)

THE KINGDOM OF THE SON OF MAN ON EARTH

• Daniel 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

• Daniel 2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath

made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream

is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
