Letters to the EditorWhat is appropriate to print has been debated throughout history. It is clear that there are no absolutes, but always limits. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled long ago that “Freedom of speech does not mean you can yell fire in a crowded hall.” Letters to the editor also have limits. We encourage challenging letters. They can be tough, but not acrimonious; attack positions, but not persons. We seek a sense of balance and decorum; we reject the inflammatory, and respect reasonableness. Criticism is welcome; slanderous statements are not. Our aim is to create an atmosphere for vigorous discussion.

Meet and Greet with the CopsBy Joanne Annacone

A Meet and Greet/Coffee with Cops was held on Monday, May 14th in the clubhouse lobby. For the second year the Safety and Security Committee and the Board of Trustees invited all Four Seasons residents to have coffee and light refreshments with Galloway Township Police Chief Donna Higbee, Officer Kevin Jorgensen, Liaison to the S&S Committee and 14 police officers and detectives.

Chief Donna Higbee

After a brief informative talk by the chief, approximately 72 residents had the opportunity to ask questions in an open forum and to meet and have informal conversations with Chief Higbee and the officers over coffee.

Officer Kevin Jorgensen with John Coyle on the right

This year, John Coyle, a member of the S&S Committee, suggested and the committee agreed, this was a perfect date to help kickoff National Police Week (May 13 to May 19). The many residents who attended this hour and a half program showed their support and appreciation to our local police, who are working hard every day to protect our community.

Jean & Tom Reilly with Galloway’s Finest

Thank you to all our residents for your support and attendance at our programs and for making them a success. It shows the hard working committee members and Board, who volunteer their valuable time to our community, that their efforts are appreciated and without them there would be no programs.

WHAT A PERFECT NIGHT!

Jimmy Mazz performed a perfect show. Every show he performs has a different theme. Ttonight’s theme was “Traveling the USA through music.”

It was such a great story of many states and which entertainer came from each of the states. Then he performed songs from that entertainer. All through the

night there was audience participation. Hopefully we will be able to have Jimmy back on our stage next year to perform one of his new shows.

A great time was had by all.

Our dinner was catered by “Two Brothers” and it was outstanding, from the appetizer to the dessert. Our Hostesses for the evening were: Lynnda Wilby, Steve & Cathy Paular & Phyllis DeSipio. Winners of the Raffle were: Annette Shorosky & Irene Cannizzaro.Thank you to Carl Castro and the Social Events Committee for bringing such great entertainment to our clubhouse.

2018 POLAR BEAR PLUNGE By Betsy Doyle with photos by Don Chillemi

Saturday, May 26 found 16 Polar Bears ready to test the water at the Outdoor Pool. These are brave, hardy souls who enjoy the outdoor pool no matter what the temperature of the water. However, this year the water was warmer than usual and a few “polar bears” stayed in for awhile. The names are not in order but hopefully, they are correct. The 2018 POLAR BEARS were: Lou Ruggerio, Lou Cannizaro, Pat Creegan, Maggie Smith, Dorothy Johnson, Annamarie Andreadis, Dawn Bonnell, Liz Dear, Sandy Schamach, Terry Drexler, Robert Switzer, Donna Pendarvis, Anthony Orsini, Paul Kelly, David Day, Betsy Doyle. Thanks to all the “Polar Bears” who help make the opening day memorable. Hope to see you again next year.

Four Seasons Veterans Club By Ed Sperling The following are highlights from our May 14th meeting.

Ed Triggs opened the evening with an invocation and prayer followed by a flag salute and pledge of allegiance led by Bob Simms. At this time Ed led the audience in a slow salute to honor those Vets that have passed away since last May. May they rest in Peace: Herbert Rudolph, Army 1945-48 George Pagoulatos, Army 1947-47 Canio Potenza, National Guard 1959-63 Howard Garfield, Army 1942-46 William Shrader, Army 1948-73 James Moran, Navy 1944-46 Anthony Fiorelli, Army 1954-56

Dee Wells was honored to introduce our guest, WWII, D-Day veteran, Peter Fantacone. Peter was born in

Pennsylvania and currently resides in Mays landing.

Peter enlisted into the Navy when he was 18 and after graduating from radio school was shipped right to England in mid-May 1944. He said he had heard rumblings of a grand operation but really knew little of

what was to come. On June 5, 1944 the order to assemble came down.

Peter was a radioman serving aboard the USS LCI 492,a flat bottomed boat 200 ft. long with a 24ft. beam. (Like most ships of her class, she was not named and was known only by her designation.) “492” was attached to Coast Guard Flotilla 10. On D-Day this flotilla ferried our boys to Omaha Beach being a part of the greatest armada in history. These were the men and boys challenging Hitler’s Fortress Europe.

Being a radio operator he did not actually storm the beach but he was right in the thick of the action. He has vivid recollections of the carnage of the invasion. He still remembers feeling seasick especially from the diesel fumes, the pounding waves and the frightening sounds and sights of battle.

It was an honor listening to Peter. You don’t get a chance to talk to somebody that actually took part in D-Day or even in the War. Peter does try to do presentations on his experiences knowing we must not forget this history. We are losing our WWII Vets more and more every day. Peter was awarded France’s highest decoration, The Insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 2015.

The following pictures are intended to give you some appreciation of the environment Peter worked in.

Peter’s ship tied up at the mooring in England.

Dee presented Peter with our Eagle trophy and he received a spirited ovation. Thank you Peter, for your service and for sharing of your experience.

This would be the time to announce that once again there is no change in officers. There were no nominations or volunteers to step forward to relieve Bob Simms and Mike Perro from their duties. If all of us feel there is value to this organization some members have to step forward in order to continue. Please consider.

Four Seasons Veterans club meets the second Monday of each month, except December, at 7PM in the clubhouse ballroom. The club is open to all Four Seasons residents who have ever served as regular or reserve members of the armed forces. Spouses, significant others and non-members are invited to attend our meetings if interested. Please join us.

Mini-Golf Putting Green–Pat CreeganThe Mini-Golf Putting Green has been completed and has already been used by residents and their families. We hope to purchase a small secured shed for the putters and obstacles, which will be located next to the putting surface. marked out for electrical and irrigation locations.

Clubhouse Coffee Brewing Machine–Mike CosterThe HOA Attorney prepared the Coffee Brewing contract which is being reviewed by our Board of Trustees. Two pages of the contract are the vendor’s service agreement, which defines the minimum requirements of monthly coffee purchases by the Association. The vendor’s agreement called for the Association to purchase 12 boxes of 24 K-cups per/mouth or 288 cups of coffee. The Association’s cost for the coffee will be about $186 per/mouth or $.67 per cup of coffee. The Association would sell the brewed coffee for $1.00. The Association would get a return of $.33 per/cup or $95.04 per/month. The Association’s monthly return would be applied to coffee brewing purchases. Where can you buy an 8 or 10-ounce cup of coffee for under a dollar these days, that is unless you brew it yourself. In a recent workshop meeting a Trustee made a statement that the Association’s members would have to drink 3,456 cups of coffee per/year. That brought a lot of giggles from the workshop audience. It sounds

a lot but let me break the numbers down for you. There are 365 days a year, which can be reduced by 104 weekend days and 10 national holidays. I guess that the residents may not be buying coffee on those days, but who knows. That leaves us with hypothetically, 251 coffee business sale days. If we divide the annual number of annual K-cups (3,456) by the number of coffee business sale days (251) that would equate to about 14 cups of coffee should be sold each business day. I am sure that some business sale days we would exceed that number, while on other days we may not. The coffee brewing machine was to replace the archaic, dirty and unreliable coffee vending machine. The new coffee brewing machine will be there for all residents when they are playing cards, enjoying clubhouse amenities or socializing with friends and they want a hot cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate without having to leave the Clubhouse area. As of May 18, the Board of Trustees is still discussing the contract’s conditions.

Heating the Outdoor Pool–Ed AdamsThe Request for Proposal (RFP) for heating the outdoor pool was mailed to five engineering companies on April 23. The engineering companies have until 12 noon on Monday, May 25 to submit their proposals. The RFP is asking the selected engineering company to manage the project which includes the following tasks: create a Request For Proposal to be sent to pool heating equipment and installation companies; participate in interviewing these responding companies; selecting the equipment and installation company; coordinate the South Jersey Gas Company installation of a dedicated gas line and gas meter; contacting and recommending concrete and electrical contractors which are required for the installation of the pool heaters; coordinating all Township permits and inspections; coordinating the testing of the heaters, etc.

The South Jersey Gas Company is scheduled to start the excavation and installation of the free gas line and meter from Yarmouth Court to the outdoor pool equipment shed beginning the week of June 4th

Words from Safety & SecurityBy Jerry Hauselt

Over the years I have written articles about falls being the number one cause of injuries to seniors both in and out of the home. I also have learned that the writer needs the benefit of experience with the topic. I now have a recent memory of my fall in my kitchen. Pain is the main part of the memory.

I have a cute little dog named Noodles and he and I were getting ready for bed. I always go to the kitchen and get a doggie snack under the watchful eye of Noodles. He then speeds away to get into bed and wait for me and the treasured treat. I TURNED TO GRAB MY TRUSTY FOUR-WHEELED ROLLER and missed the handle, grabbed some air, the walker rolled away and I hit the kitchen floor with a mighty thud on my shoulder. After a loud

“pop”, then came the pain. I laid helpless on the floor and the dog waited for me. 911 was called and they responded to my home. The injury was to my right shoulder and of course, I am right handed. After some minor problems we got out of my home and off to the hospital. Now I can wear a sling for 8-10 weeks.

HOW DID THIS ACCIDENT HAPPEN? I did not put the walker close enough to me. I did not engage the brakes. I did not pay attention to what I was doing, and finally, my attention was getting Noodles his nighttime treat and not on the safety rules of parking and using a walker. I might add here that there was no time to do anything to save myself but to just hit the deck. What if I was alone? Fortunately, my son was there and he called 911. My falling experience has caused me to think more seriously about the alarms available for problems like mine. FALL PROOF YOUR HOME-GOOGLE IT

Village Reps MeetingBy Dan Smith

Village activities reports:Village reps noted any special upcoming events and happenings in their village.

Devonshire- a resource book was given to a resident on Southampton. Wexford- Resource books were given to new residents on Wicklow, Londonderry, Crowndale and Brampton. Brian O’Hara reported that $500 was given to the Food Bank last year earned from road cleanups. Ladies’ luncheons are planned twice a year, in May and October. Berkshire- Their village luncheon was held at Romanelli’s. Chatham- There are several vacant homes in the village, as residents move out.

Oxford- Everything seems to be going well in this village. Pembrooke- Ginny Schwab reported that she sent out a letter to residents, which she will share with the other village reps through Tom Reilly. Ginny reported that there were ten new residents who moved in to Pembrooke in the year.

Resource Sheet:Tom Reilly reiterated the importance of distributing the Resource Guide to all residents, including renters. All forms are available on the website, including the property check form which will alert the Galloway Twp. Police Dept. to conduct periodic property checks when residents are away for periods of time.

When contacting new residents, village reps should encourage them to sign up for the website and the email notification list. About 800 residents are already signed up for the website. The email list is separate from the website list. Emphasize to renters that they are encouraged to sign up for both, also. Please notify Lorraine of any rented properties. It was noted that our new website is very useful and comprehensive.

Brian O’Hara asked for volunteers to participate in the Clean for Charity road clean up on Old Port Rd. on May 17. Several persons responded.

Safety and Security:The Safety and Security Committee is working with the Fire Department to plan for a fire drill for the clubhouse. The S&S Committee is also developing protocols for possible emergency situations at the clubhouse. The S&S committee is also contacting other communities regarding their procedures.

The Atlantic County Sheriff’s Dept. can supply bracelets with tracking devices for persons who, because of medical conditions, may possibly wander away from home.

VRs should encourage new residents to participate in the keyholder program and help update the decal status when others move away from the community.

Sidewalks: Interim suggestions were discussed for remediating sidewalk trip hazards because of shifting panels. Discussion included suggestions for grinding uneven panels (cost and feasibility), spraying with orange marker paint and using trip hazard signs. Ginny Schwab noted that there are some problems in Pembrooke as to how tree root growth can interfere with exiting a parked car. The condition of problems with some of the red overlays on some handicap accessibility ramps was brought up. John Gladden is able to repair these, so when and where this problem is noted, the proper form should be given to the front desk. These problems should also be noted on the sidewalk survey form that VRs will be completing.

Sidewalk surveys due date: VRs should return these by June 15, 2018 to Tom Reilly. Make sure you put on the bottom of the form all of the streets that you inspected, even if there were no problems. This will verify that all streets were inspected, even if no problems were found. Discussion of sidewalk rust and other stains and remediation were discussed, along with methods to clean the sidewalks, the optimum frequency for cleaning, and the need to

put a new proposal for this project to the board for consideration and approval. (It is believed that John Gladden has the equipment to do this work.). The condition of the sidewalks’ appearance as it relates to the overall aesthetic appeal of the community, and its influence on home resale value are important factors in consideration of this project.

A discussion followed concerning teens going door-to-door soliciting homeowners for small work projects around their homes. The signs that are posted at the entrance of every village state that soliciting is prohibited, and township ordinance requires that everyone doing such work must have a mercantile permit.

Other items:Important reminder: VRs should help recruit more VRs. Older villages, such as Devonshire and Chatham are understaffed. While some villages are large, many people seem reluctant to volunteer. Our responsibilities as VRs are very important, but they are not overwhelming. Please renew your efforts to recruit, especially among new residents and friends! New VR’s are always welcome!

The faded condition of some “restricted fishing/water activities” signs on the ponds, building truss signs, and fading village entrance/identification signs was noted. Ted Johnson reported that the Maintenance Committee is working on these projects, which will be addressed.

and proud of their talented creations that will help bring some light to a very dark day for many people. We all feel that this is a “labor of love.”

We have already made donations to Atlantic Care Hospital here in Galloway and are meeting this month with Cape May Regional Hospital in Cape May Courthouse. They are also affiliated with Cooper which has a very high risk Neonatal Pregnancy Unit.

As we continue our work, we are always in need of donations of wedding gowns, so please pass the word. Again, we would like to thank you for your help and support to our program. We will keep you updated on our progress as we go along.

MOVIE PassionBy Alan Levin

Writers note, the column was written circa 2012.

There is so much violence in the world today. There is no scarcity of it in movies either. Django Unchained and The Gangsters thrive on the gushing of blood. My thoughts turn to Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and Paul Newman. Their resumes are not filled with violent movies. I yearn for more stories that depict men with courage such as Peck’s Addicus Finch in To Kill a Mocking Bird. I want to read more about stars who create a camp such as Newman’s Over the Hill Gang that cater to kids with cancer. I want to be captivated and enchanted with the softness and tenderness of Audrey Hepburn, the UNICEF volunteer whose movies captured us like her role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s as Holly Golightly.

I also think of Richard Farnsworth. He had the face of your Uncle Fred. He could play Santa Claus

without any cosmetics. He was “Red” the assistant to the manager that Wilfred Brimley played in The Natural. When Robert Redford joined the team….. “Red” takes him to dinner. He asks Redford if he likes the food. He tells Redford…. “I can’t pronounce the name….but it eats good….” He made the movie Straight Story about a man who goes across the country to visit his dying brother in a tractor. I miss Richard Farnsworth.

I miss Van Johnson. I miss his innocence and that huckleberry look and demeanor……even when he played Holly in the great war movie Battleground. I want to be in Oklahoma with Gordon MacRae. I want to just listen to Morgan Freeman’s voice. Specifically, when he describes he and his cellmates drinking a beer on top of the prison as they are tarring the roof……from Shawshank Redemption. I miss the “old’ Robert Redford. I want to see Barbra Streisand push his hair back from The Way We Were. I want to sit with him in the mountains as he stares at the horses for hours….from Horse Whisperer.

I want to sit around a table with Myrna Loy, Jessica Tandy, Jennifer Jones, Helen Hayes, Olivia deHavilland, Deborah Kerr, Ingrid Bergman et. al. and breathe in their sweetness. I would love to have a beer with Gary Cooper and Joel McCrea. I want to not be enamored with Celine Dion’s “Skies of L.A.” but rather listen to Barbra Streisand’s “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

Finally, I look up and see this short stack of pancakes with the sweet syrup on top, two big blue eyes and a smile that can crush you…..our grandson Michael Alan is in the house….all is well with the world.

Writers note: There is another “short stack” and her name is Chelsea Rose. Together we now have a full order of sweetness.

A CHANGING PERSPECTIVEBy Joel Ollander

SEPTEMBER SONGKnickerbocker Holiday - 1938

Music by Kurt Weill; Lyrics by Maxwell AndersonFor it’s a long, long time from May to December

And the days grow short when you reach September,When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame

One hasn’t got time for the waiting game,For the days dwindle down to a precious few

September…November,And these few precious days I’ll spend with you,

These precious days I’ll spend with you--------------------------------------------------

I was fifteen years old when first I heard this beautiful melody, and listened to its bittersweet, haunting lyrics. The story it suggested to me then was of two young lovers lamenting the fact that they must separate for a time during the fall and winter.

Perhaps the young lady was leaving home for classes at a distant college; or the young man for military service. Surely in spring they would be reunited, but they wanted to make the most of their ‘last few precious days’ together before a temporary parting.

Now from my very changed perspective - eighty-two years of age, and six decades of a joyful marriage - I find the very same lyrics describe a dramatically different scenario.

The separation is no longer a prelude to youthful adventure and eventual reunion; it is now a stark reminder that a final parting is closer at hand, and the twilight of our lives leaves but a ‘last few precious days.’

Jacque Brel’s musical description of an elderly couple speaks to life’s end game. The lyrics of his song - The Old Folks - tells us that the husband and wife move slowly and with pain; they dream no more; their books have gone to sleep; the piano is out of tune; their cat is dead.

The old folks hear the ticking of the silver clock on their mantle. It says ‘I wait for you.’ Its silence - soon to come - will signal their passage into history.

I too now hear the ticking of life’s time-machine!

‘Send not to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.’ John Dunne

Town Hall with State Legislators

On the evening of May 23rd the Board of Trustees sponsored a town hall event with state legislators: pictured left to right Senator Chris Connors, and Assembly representatives Brian Rumpf and Diane Gove introduced by Vice President Frank Miller.

The following are highlights of topics touched upon and questions raised by residents at the meeting.

1. The Homestead Rebate Program – is based upon the budget which last year was underfunded and saw the rebate cut in half. Sen. Connors foresees that it may be halved again this year; the state syphons off more money into the general fund leaving less for seniors. Note “that the 9th District has the largest percentage of seniors of any district in the state.” The budget will be voted upon in June.

2. Veteran Real Estate Tax reduction – The three legislators sponsored legislation: “a vet is a vet” not dependent upon service during peace or war, theater or time of service. Never got out of committee.

3. The Gas Tax Increase – The 9th Repsopposed the increase and noted that the bill has

provision to increase the gas tax automatically if need is not met.

4. Legalization of Marijuana – Rep. Rumpf travelled the state and found 80% support legalization looking for big money revenues. The three legislators oppose it. Medical marijuana questions, who can write Rx and the exorbitant pricing was also raised. Siting of appalling and fear-producing conditions in Denver was challenged by knowledgeable resident. Legalized sports betting will be addressed in the Assembly on June 7.

5. Gun Sales and Background Checks Bill –All three voted no, stating support for the second amendment and “NJ has the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.”

6. Costs of Highway Construction in NJ – is atone million dollars a mile, the highest in the country due to the “prevailing wage” paid to construction workers on roads determined by the Dept. of Labor according to the representatives.

7. Advocate for universal pre-K in the state – This will be budget-dependent although Governor Murphy is trying to expand the program.

8. Use of taxes in school systems – In Galloway 65% of tax collection goes to the schools. Their budget uses 80 to 85% for pensions, salaries and medical coverage. Pension reform has not been addressed. Not known if any communities exist where senior citizens pay less in school taxes.

9. Former NRA member Questions – When NRA refused to ban Teflon bullets, used to kill police officers; he left the organization and questions why assault rifles are not banned. In an aside, representatives asserted that NJ has had an assault rifle ban on the books since the 1990s.

10. Where does gas tax revenue go toinfrastructure or mass transit? Sen. Connors’ answer seemed to be that even though an issue might be dedicated to a particular project, the monies can be redirected in the budget process and spent elsewhere.

11. Sports Betting Monies- About 8 % of these monies should go to senior programs just as the casino revenue does.

Senator Connors, Representatives Rumpf and Gove were thanked numerous times for coming to Four Season by individuals and by Frank Miller.

Book Club Notes By Janet Reilly

On May 29, the Book Club met in the Library to discuss the book STIFF: The Curious

Lives of Human Cadavers, by Mary Roach, and suggested by me. This book was a bit different than any we’ve read so far, and for some of us, a bit difficult to read due to its content, in the sense that having a good sense of “gallows humor” may be necessary. Actually, I’d say that of those who read the book, 50% liked it, and 50% not so much.

Mary Roach did a masterful job presenting Stiff in a very scientific manner, while inserting bits of humor in just the right places. As of 2016, she has published seven books. Stiff was her first, and it actually reached The New York Times bestseller list. With chapters like Head Surgery, Dissection, Decay, Plane Crashes, Crash Test Dummies, and Eat Me, you can see where it was a bit controversial.

Although not for the faint of heart, for those who managed to get through it, the practicality of such a book came shining through. It shed new light on what it means to donate your body to science. It also gave an option for the lifeless body. We are all aware of the burial and cremation models, but not everyone is aware of the “mulch model”. Before you get all upset and running in different directions, think about it. We’re running out of space and we’re polluting our earth. A woman in Sweden has devised a method in which the cadaver is freeze dried, and then goes through a process that turns it into mulch to fertilize everything from grass to trees, to vegetables. Kind of a clean, nice thing to do with a body. For good reason, I think I’ll stop here.

On July 30 at 10:00 am, we will not review a book. Instead, we’re having a guest speaker, novelist Jonathon King. the award-winning author of the Max Freeman series of mysteries who will give a lecture in the Ballroom of the Clubhouse. A Michigan native, Jonathon King moved to the South

Jersey coast in the 1970s. His latest novel is The Sindia Promise: Life After the Shipwreck. It’s a mystery that centers around a legendary shipwreck in Ocean City, NJ, in 1901. The Sindia, a 329-foot cargo ship owned by John D. Rockefeller, was sailing from Japan to New York when it ran aground in Ocean City after a fierce storm. Readers who have been to O.C. will recognize many familiar names and places. All residents are welcome to attend this exciting lecture. On August 27th, at 10 am, in the All-Purpose Room in the Clubhouse we will review Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance, suggested by Lucy Jereu and Ginney Dominic. If you’ve thought about joining the book club, it’s a great time to do so, as we will begin choosing titles for 2019. Come one, come all!

Novelist Jonathon King, award-winning author of the Max Freeman series of mysteries, will be guest speaker on July 30 at 10 AM in the Clubhouse Ballroom. All residents are invited to attend this annual author event, sponsored by the Four Seasons Book Club. Refreshments will be served.

A Michigan native, King moved to the South Jersey coast in the 1970s. He earned a journalism degree from Temple University and for 24 years worked as a crime reporter in Philadelphia and Ft. Lauderdale. In 2002 he won the Edgar Award (named for Edgar Allen Poe) for his debut novel, The Blue Edge of Midnight, a mystery set in the Florida Everglades about a former Philly

cop-turned-private-detective. Since then, King has written nine more novels, including two works of historical fiction.

King’s latest historical novel is The Sindia Promise: Life After the Shipwreck, a mystery that centers around a legendary shipwreck in Ocean City, NJ, in 1901. The Sindia, a 329-foot cargo ship owned by John D. Rockefeller, was sailing from Japan to New York when it ran aground in Ocean City after a fierce storm.

From the book’s jacket: “The Sindia Promise spins a fictional tale of ... Theo Cuthbert, a simple sailor [who] hears the deathbed declaration and plea of his best friend aboard: They’re yours now, Theo. Take them and live a life. In his struggle to honor the promise he

Surrounded by the coastal beauty of sea and marsh and pristine waterways of America’s mid-Atlantic states, one man wrestles with a changing world in a new century and his moral obligation to it.”

Readers of this novel who have been to Ocean City will recognize many familiar names and places. Why not mark your calendar now to join us on July 30 for this special event? There will be a sign-up sheet at the clubhouse front desk, as we need to get an approximate head count. If you have questions, please contact Elizabeth at 609-568-5785 or email [email protected].

Four Seasons BINGOBy Susan Herman

I am happy to report that on Sunday evening, May 6, we had a Progressive Jackpot winner. On the 54th number of the game, Danny Passarella called “N” 40 and a lucky player, Anna Gargantiel, called “Bingo.” After Anna’s card was verified, she received a check for $819. Congratulations Anna!

After a Sunday off for Mother’s Day, Bingo resumed on May 20 with a new Jackpot cycle and Anna treating her fellow Bingo players to doughnuts and coffee. This tradition was started by Ken Herman when he won the Jackpot and continued by Chiara Agresta after her win in December and Sally Behar in March. In addition to the week off for Mother’s Day, there was no Bingo on May 27 (Memorial Day weekend) or June 17 (Father’s Day).

In last month’s article I recognized the Bingo volunteers. After writing the article, we had another person volunteer – Nancy Mooney. Thank you Nancy – welcome to the group. Volunteers are always needed.

Come out and join us on Sunday evenings for Bingo and perhaps you will be the next Jackpot winner.

Wexford Village Ladies Luncheon By Ann Gallo

After having the winter that would never end and the week that wouldn’t stop raining, 51 ladies from Wexford Village gathered at the Mays Landing Country Club on Thursday, May 17th to catch up with returning snow birds, neighbors they hadn’t seen since Christmas and meet some of our newer neighbors. The afternoon flew as there was so much chatter and laughter and some new friends to be made. It was agreed that we all had a great time and are looking forward to the next luncheon in October.

Thank you Linda Graves and Charlene Furlani for putting together this luncheon for the ladies of Wexford Village.

The Fishing LegendBy Joel Ollander

After the icy grip of a long, cold winter relented, and the first signs of spring began to appear, it was time to engage in my favorite outdoor activity – fishing. So I rushed off to my usual angling spot at the Oxford Village Pond, armed with my trusty rod, reel, and some Nathan’s hot dogs to use as bait for my Piscean friends.

Although the air temperature was a comfortable sixty-five degrees, the water was still extremely cold. Fish are lethargic in frigid waters and much less likely to go for the anglers’ offerings than they would once the temperature moderates. So I was not at all surprised that after an hour of cast and retrieve, nothing was happening.

After yet another half-hour of futility, I began getting hungry. I thought perhaps it would be better to just go home, eat the hot dogs for lunch, and to hell with the uncooperative fish!

Just then a friend and neighbor from Oxford Village – Donna Pendarvis - stopped to chat as she passed by on her daily walk around the pond. We exchanged pleasantries, and I told her of my lack of angling success.

“How would you like to participate in an experiment?” I asked.

“What do you have in mind, Joel?”

“There’s an old fishing legend that if a beautiful woman rubs a fisherman’s rod, it will bring him good luck and big fish. Are you up to the challenge?” I asked.

Donna laughed, agreed, and rubbed the tip of the fishing rod.

But my hunger overcame me, so before I had a chance to test the legend, I went home to enjoy my ‘fish bait’ franks. “I’ll try tomorrow,” I announced.

My very first cast the next day resulted in a strong strike. The fish took off towards the other end of the pond. I worked the rod and reel for about ten minutes to bring an 8-pound catfish to shore…a huge catch for that small impoundment. Donna – now definitely a good luck charm – photographed the event for posterity, proving that The Fishing Legend lives!

Acknowledgments: I would like to thank Donna for being such a good sport, and a fine photographer; and my wife Phyllis for being a great copy editor who turned my lackluster ‘first draft’ into an interesting and humorous article!
