A Fact The first promise is of a coming resurrection

Jesus Us

The sense is we are to “come alive” in a new way following Christ’s resurrection

This promise is to give hope to men who would be disappointed, disillusioned, and even perhaps cynical – Luke 24:21, John 20:25

Luke 24:21 (NASB)21 But we were hoping that it was He who was

going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened

John 20:25 (NASB)25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We

have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

A Fact Jesus is saying two things in this promise.

Death is not the end! Not for me, not for you!

You don’t even have to wait until the next life for this promise! You will begin to enter into the reality of that life now!

A Consequence The consequence of the double

resurrection is that we will know Him as being who He is – The Messiah.

The content of this knowledge is that Jesus is the divine Son of God.

Proof #1 – Jesus’ resurrection (Rom. 1:3-4)

Romans 1:3-4 (NASB)3 concerning His Son, who was born of a

descendant of David according to the flesh,

4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

A Promise Jesus also makes a promise that we will

not just know Him; but in our obedience to His Word, we will know Him more fully!

In our Salvation, the Holy Spirit brings to us a knowledge about Him that leads to our faith.

From our faith (obedience) then comes a deeper knowledge of Him.

A Promise You know you have this kind of faith by

“keeping His commandments” and by “love”! – James 2:17; 1 John 5:3

James 2:17 (NASB)17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is

dead, being by itself.

1 John 5:3 (NASB)3 For this is the love of God, that we

keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

A Promise You know you have this kind of faith by

“keeping His commandments” and by “love”! – James 2:17; 1 John 5:3

The manifestation of Christ is made only to those who really love Him!

The proof of that love for Him is in our submission to His will!

This is a heart issue!

An Explanation The last promise is an explanation of how

all this is going to occur – the Holy Spirit! This was an entirely new concept for the

disciples. The O.T. Spirit that was with people was

now going to be in all believers! This is the unique characteristic of this

present time!

Application

When you breathe your last in this world, will Jesus be your Judge or your Savior?

ApplicationThree of these promises are automatic products of grace: our resurrection, knowing Him as God, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The fourth, an increasingly full revelation of Him is contingent upon our obedience and growth in love.

What are you doing to pursue that fuller revelation? Are you submitting to the influence

of the Holy Spirit in your life?
