AudienceThis guide is intended for networking professionals who are responsible for installing the ServerIron Series switches. We assume that you are familiar with the basic concepts and terminology of Ethernet, local area networking, and application switching.

OrganizationThis guide contains the following:

• Chapter 1 “About this Guide” describes the organization of this book.

• Chapter 2 “Product Overview” provides a physical and functional overview of the ServerIron hardware features. It describes the switch modules, ports, LEDs, power consumption, and technical specifications.

• Chapter 3 “Installing the ServerIron” describes the procedures for installing, connecting, and powering up the ServerIron chassis switches.

• Chapter 4 “ServerIron 4G Series” provides a functional overview and describes the procedures for installing, connecting, and powering up the ServerIron stackable switches.

ServerIron 350/450/850 FamilyThis section contains the following sections:

ServerIron 350, 450, and 850 switches provide high performance Layer 4 – 7 application switching and traffic management. These systems feature Foundry's highest performance WSM6/WSM7 management module. A choice of 10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules can be added for high-density connectivity into the network and to the server farms. This family features a choice of 3-, 4- and 8-slot chassis products for a choice of size, port density and future expandability options.

NOTE: An SSL service module (SRVC-SSL6-1 or SRVC-SSL6-2) can be added for integrated SSL.

ServerIron 350 and 350 PLUS SwitchesThe ServerIron 350 Family is a series of compact, modular, 3-slot, Layer 4 – 7 application switches that come pre-equipped with a WSM6 (ServerIron 350) or WSM7 (ServerIron 350 PLUS).

The ServerIron 350/350 PLUS switches can be equipped with up to two JetCore line modules and support 10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet (copper and fiber media), and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

The ServerIron 350/350 PLUS switches ship with one power supply (rear pluggable) and redundant power supplies are optionally available. This switch features a removable fan tray.

NOTE: A second WSM6 management module can be added to double the performance and provide redundancy of a SeverIron 350. A second WSM7 management module can be added to double the performance and provide redundancy of a SeverIron 350 PLUS.

WARNING: When removing a fan tray, be careful not to touch the spinning fan.

ServerIron 850 Switch and 850 PLUS SwitchesThe ServerIron 850 Family is a series of 8-slot, Layer 4 – 7 application switches that come pre-equipped with a WSM6 (ServerIron 850) or WSM7 (ServerIron 850 PLUS).

The ServerIron 850 switch can be pre-equipped with up to seven JetCore line modules and support 10/100 Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet (copper and fiber media), and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

The ServerIron 850 switch ships with one power supply and redundant power supplies are optionally available. The power supplies are front serviceable.

ServerIronGT C Series SSL FamilyThe ServerIronGT C Series SSL Family are 3-slot IP application and Web optimization switches that come pre-equipped with a WSM6-SSL-1 (Web Switching Management module with integrated SSL capabilities) and a JetCore line module. The pre-equipped line modules can support 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet (copper and fiber media). 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules can be added as an option.

The ServerIronGT C Series SSL Family features a modular, compact, and resilient design in 2U height. This switch ships with one power supply (rear pluggable) and redundant power supplies are optionally available.

The ServerIronGT C Series SSL Family offers expandability and performance upgradability. You can add more line modules, or a second WSM6-SSL-1.

The following ServerIronGT-C Series SSL Family base platforms are available:

• ServerIronGT CGx2 SSL

• ServerIronGT CGC16 SSL

• ServerIronGT C2404CF SSL

ServerIronGT C Series FamilyThe ServerIronGT C Series are 3-slot IP application and Web optimization switches that come pre-equipped with a WSM6-1 (Web Switching Management Module) and a JetCore line module. The pre-equipped line modules can support 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet (copper and fiber media). 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules can be added as an option.

The ServerIronGT C Series switches feature a modular, compact, and resilient design in 2U height. This switch ships with one power supply (rear pluggable) and redundant power supplies are optionally available.

The ServerIronGT C Series switches offer expandability and performance upgradability. You can add more line modules, or a second WSM6-1.

OverviewBased on Foundry multi-processor technology, web switching modules (WSMs) are supported on all of the ServerIron series switches with one management processor (MP) for device management and one, two, or three barrel processors (BPs) for application switched traffic.

On the ServerIron 350, 450, E Series, and C Series and the WSM is located in the top slot of the device (slot 1). On the ServerIron 850, the WSM is located in the left-most slot of the device.

NOTE: Any system can be upgraded to a higher performance management module.

NOTE: Dual management modules must be of the same type.

NOTE: You can install up to two WSM6 modules in a device for double the performance and redundancy. However, using two WSM6 modules reduces the number of slots available for JetCore interface modules. With two WSM6 modules installed, both modules are active and the result is double the performance.

NOTE: The WSM6-1 and WSM6-2 do not work with the IronCore line modules.

Serial Management Interface

The serial management interface enables you to configure and manage the device using a third-party terminal emulation application on a directly connected PC. A straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial cable (M/F) is shipped with the device. The serial management interface is located in the upper right corner of front panel, above the Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports.

Reset Button

The reset button allows you to restart the system without switching the power supplies off and on or using the CLI or Web management interface. The button is located to the right of the serial management interface and is recessed to prevent it from being pushed accidentally. A paper clip can make pushing the Reset button much easier.

10-Gigabit Ethernet Ports

The 10-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces operate at full duplex. They use GBIC-like XENPAK Multisource Agreement (MSA) optics, which are hot-swappable, allowing you to change the optics without removing the module from the chassis.

The following XENPAK optics are supported:

• 1310nm serial for single-mode fiber

• 1510nm serial for single-mode fiber

For these optics, use the matching fiber type with an SC connector. For example, if you are using the 1310nm serial module for single-mode fiber, attach a 1310nm single-mode fiber cable that has an SC connector.

Gigabit Ethernet ModulesThe J-B2Gx 2-Port 1000Base-X (mini-GBIC) JetCore Line Module provides two Gigabit Ethernet ports. These ports can be equipped with fiber (1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX) or copper (1000Base-TX) mini-GBIC connectors. The ServerIronGT EGx2 comes pre-equipped with this module.

The ports can be equipped with fiber (1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX) or copper (1000Base-TX) mini-GBIC connectors. Each port has mini-GBIC connectors for 1000 Base-SX or 1000 Base-LX fiber cables.

100/1000Base-T ModuleThe J-B16GC 16-Port 100/1000Base-T JetCore Line Module provides 16 100/1000 Ethernet ports (RJ-45). Figure 2.33 shows the front panel of this module.

100/1000 Ports

Each 100/1000 port has its own RJ-45 connector for Category 5 (Cat5) cabling. You can connect each port to a 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps segment. The ports automatically detect the speed of the network and configure themselves accordingly. You also can manually configure a port for 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps.

• Use a crossover cable to connect to another Layer 2 Switch or Layer 3 Switch. A crossover cable swaps the wires so that the send signal on one port connects to the receive signal on the other port, and so on.

• Use a straight-through cable to connect to an end station or server. A straight-through cable does not swap the wires.

NOTE: The copper interfaces support auto-negotiation but do not support half-duplex mode.

100BaseFX Fiber Ports

The 100BaseFX ports are equipped with MT-RJ connectors for fiber-optic cable and operate at 100 Mbps in full-duplex mode. A single Integrated Packet Controller (IPC) manages the ports.

J-B2404CF 24-Port 10/100Base-TX and 4-Port Combo Gigabit Ethernet ModuleThis module provides twenty four 10/100Base-TX ports and four Gigabit Ethernet ports (copper and fiber combo media). Figure 2.35 shows the front panel of the module.

10/100 Mbps Ethernet ModuleThe J-B48E-A 48-Port 10/100 JetCore Line Module provides 48 10/100 Ethernet ports. This double-wide module takes two slots in the chassis. Figure 2.36 shows the front panel of a JetCore 10/100 RJ-45 forwarding module.

Product Overview

10/100 Ports

Each 10/100 port has its own RJ-45 connector. Each connector supports a 10/100 Ethernet network segment on Category 5 (Cat5) wire. The 10/100 ports use auto-sensing and auto-negotiating to determine the speed (10 Mbps or 100 Mbps) and mode (full-duplex or half-duplex) of the port at the other end of the link and adjust port speed accordingly.

• Use a crossover cable to connect to another Layer 2 Switch or Layer 3 Switch. A crossover cable swaps the wires so that the send signal on one port connects to the receive signal on the other port, and so on.

• Use a straight-through cable to connect to an end station or server. A straight-through cable does not swap the wires.

LEDsThe LEDs listed in the tables provide status information for the supported JetCore Line Modules. All types of Foundry 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules use the same port LEDs.

Power Consumption MatrixUse the Power Consumption Matrix to calculate the total power requirements, by adding up the watts for each individual piece of ServerIron hardware in your system.

The power supplies have an 80% efficiency rate. So, for example:

• a C series chassis (50W), a WSM6 (125W), a J-B16GC (100W), and a J-B24FX (80W) would total 355 watts.

• 355 W * 1.2 (80%) = 426 watts

• 426 watts / 120 volts out of the power source = 3.5 amps

Table 2.6 shows the power required in watts for the ServerIron platforms (empty chassis plus power supply), Web Switching Modules, and JetCore line modules.

Chapter 3Installing the ServerIron

This chapter describes how to install Foundry ServerIrons and attach them to your network.

WARNING: The procedures in this manual are for qualified service personnel.

Unpacking a SystemThe Foundry ServerIron ships with all the following items. Please review the list below and verify the contents. If any items are missing, contact the place of purchase.

General RequirementsTo manage the system, you need the following items for serial connection to the ServerIron:

• A management station, such as a PC running a terminal emulation application.

• A straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial cable (F/F). The serial cable can be ordered separately from Foundry Networks (part number CC). If you prefer to build your own cable, see the pinout information in “Attaching a PC or Terminal” on page 3-5.

You use the serial connection to perform basic configuration tasks including assigning a management IP address and network mask to the system. This information is required for managing the system using the Web management interface or IronView or using the CLI through Telnet.

Summary of Installation ProceduresFollow the steps below to install your ServerIron. Details for each step are provided later in this chapter.

1. Ensure that the physical environment that will host the device has the proper cabling and ventilation. See “Preparing the Installation Site” on page 3-3.

2. Optionally install or remove redundant power supplies. See “Installing or Removing DC Power Supplies (for 4-Slot Chassis Devices)” on page 3-4.

3. Verify that the system and module LEDs are registering the proper LED state after power-on of the system. See “Verifying Proper Operation” on page 3-5.

4. A terminal or PC serial port connection is all that is required to support configuration on the ServerIron. See “Attaching a PC or Terminal” on page 3-5.

5. Before attaching equipment to the device, you need to assign an interface IP address for the sub-net on which the device will be located. Initial IP address assignment is done using the CLI with a direct serial connection. Subsequent IP address assignments can be performed using the Web management interface. See “Assigning IP Addresses” on page 3-7.

NOTE: The ServerIron allows you to configure up to four additional IP sub-net addresses. Depending on the network topology, you might need to configure additional addresses.

6. Foundry devices can be installed on a desktop or in an equipment rack. See “Mounting the ServerIron in an Equipment Rack” on page 3-8.

7. Once the device is physically installed, plug the device into a nearby power source that adheres to the regulatory requirements outlined in this guide. See “Powering On the ServerIron” on page 3-11.

8. Once you power on the device and assign IP addresses, the system is ready to accept network equipment. See “Connecting Network Devices” on page 3-11.

9. Test IP connectivity to other devices by pinging them. See “Testing Connectivity” on page 3-13.

10. Configure a system name, contact, and location.

11. Continue configuring the device using the CLI or the Web management interface. Secure access to the device. See Foundry Security Guide.

Installation PrecautionsFollow these precautions when installing the ServerIron:

General Precautions

WARNING: Make sure the rack or cabinet housing the device is adequately secured to prevent it from becoming unstable or falling over.

WARNING: Mount the devices you install in a rack or cabinet as low as possible, placing the heaviest device at the bottom and progressively placing lighter devices above.

WARNING: Disconnect the power cord from all power sources to completely remove power from the device.

CAUTION: Do not install the device in an environment where the operating ambient temperature might exceed

40o C (104o F).

CAUTION: Make sure the air flow around the front, sides, and back of the device is not restricted.

Power Precautions

CAUTION: Make sure that the power source circuits are properly grounded, then use the power cord supplied with the device to connect it to the power source.

If the installation requires a different power cord than the one supplied with the device, make sure you use a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord can be used safely with the device.

CAUTION: Ensure that the device does not overload the power circuits, wiring, and over-current protection. To determine the possibility of overloading the supply circuits, add the ampere ratings of all devices installed on the same circuit as the device. Compare this total with the rating limit for the circuit. The maximum ampere ratings are usually printed on the devices near the AC power connectors.

CAUTION: Use separate branch circuits for the power. This provides redundancy in case one of the circuits fails.

CAUTION: All devices with DC power supplies are intended for installation in restricted access areas only. A restricted access area is where access can be gained only by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

CAUTION: For the DC input circuit to a 4-slot or 8-slot Chassis device (DC power supply part number RPS3DC), make sure there is a Listed 20 amp circuit breaker, minimum 48Vdc, double pole, on the input to the power supply. The input wiring for connection to the product should be Listed copper wire, 14 AWG, marked VW-1, and rated minimum 90 C.

CAUTION: For DC power supplies in 4-slot or 8-slot Chassis devices (part number RPS3DC), use a grounding wire of at least 14 American Wire Gauge (AWG).

CAUTION: For the DC input circuit to the system (DC power supply part number SI350-DC), make sure there is a 30 amp circuit breaker, minimum -48Vdc, double pole, on the input to the terminal block. The input wiring for connection to the product should be copper wire, 10 AWG, marked VW-1, and rated minimum 90 degrees celcius.

CAUTION: For a DC system (DC power supply part number SI350-DC), use a grounding wire of at least 10 American Wire Gauge (AWG). The 10 AWG wire should be attached to an agency-approved crimp connector, crimped with the proper tool.

Preparing the Installation Site

Cabling InfrastructureEnsure that the proper cabling is installed in the site. See “Connecting Network Devices” on page 3-11 for a summary of supported cabling types and their specifications.

Installation LocationBefore installing the device, plan its location and orientation relative to other devices and equipment. Allow at least 3" of space at the front of the device for the twisted-pair, fiber-optic, and power cabling. Also, allow a minimum of 3" of space between the sides and the back of the device and walls or other obstructions.

Installing or Removing DC Power Supplies (for 4-Slot Chassis Devices)Use the following procedures for DC power supplies in 4-slot Chassis devices. Use power supply model RPS3DC for 4-slot Chassis devices.

Installing a DC Power Supply1. Prepare the positive, negative, and ground wires by stripping about 1/4" of insulation off the end of each one.

(Use at least 14 AWG wire.)

2. Loosen the three screws used to hold the wires in the connector. These are the wires under the following markings:

NOTE: If you cannot easily reach the screws and wire openings due to the connector guard, remove the connector guard from the power supply. The guard is fastened to the supply by two Phillips-head screws and is mounted over the connector.

3. Slip the ground wire into the opening under the marking until the wire is fully in place, then tighten the screw to hold the wire in place.

4. Repeat for the negative (—) and positive (+) wires.

5. Pull gently on each wire to make sure they are securely fastened in the connector.

6. Re-attach the connector guard over the connector.

7. Insert the power supply into the chassis. Seat the supply firmly so that the faceplate of the supply is flush with the chassis surface.

WARNING: Metal edges on the power supply may be sharp.

8. Tighten the two thumb screws to secure the power supply to the chassis.

9. After the power supply is properly inserted, connect the power source to the wires to activate the circuit.

Removing a DC Power Supply1. Turn off the DC power source or disconnect it from the power supply.

2. Loosen the three screws used to hold the wires in the connector, then pull out the wires.

3. Loosen the two thumb screws that secure the power supply to the chassis.

4. Pull the power supply completely out of the chassis.

WARNING: Metal edges on the power supply may be sharp.

Verifying Proper OperationBefore mounting the device in its network location, verify that the device is working properly by plugging it into a power source and verifying that it passes its self test.

If your device has more than one power supply installed, repeat the following stps for each power supply.

1. Connect the power cord supplied with the ServerIron to the power connector on the power supply at the rear of the device.

2. Insert the other end into a properly grounded electrical outlet.

NOTE: The devices do not have power switches. They power on when you connect a power cord to the device and to a power source.

If your installation requires a different power cord than that supplied with the device, make sure you obtain a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord can be used safely with the device.

3. Check the LEDs on the front of the device. When the system is first powered on, the lights simultaneously light as the system goes through system and module diagnostics. After the initial diagnostics are complete, none of the port LEDs light up until a cable is connected. For more details on specific LED conditions after system start-up, see “LEDs” on page 2-13.

Attaching a PC or TerminalFoundry devices do not have an IP address when shipped from the factory. You need to assign an IP address using the CLI. To assign an IP address, you must have access to the Command Line Interface (CLI). The CLI is a text-based interface that can be accessed through a direct serial connection to the device and through Telnet connections. The CLI is described in detail in the Foundry ServerIron Command Line Interface Reference.

You can attach a serial cable to the Console port. After you assign an IP address, you also can access the system through Telnet and through the Web management interface.

To attach to a management station using the serial port:

1. Connect a PC or terminal to the serial port of the ServerIron using a straight-through cable. The serial port has a male DB-9 connector.

NOTE: You need to run a terminal emulation program on the PC.

2. Open the terminal emulation program and set the session parameters as follows:

• Baud: 9600 bps

• Data bits: 8

• Parity: None

When you establish the serial connection to the system, press Enter to display the following CLI prompt in the terminal emulation window: ServerIron>

If you see this prompt, you are now connected to the CLI and can proceed to “Assigning IP Addresses” on page 3-7.

NOTE: If you are configuring a Foundry switch that you have upgraded with ServerIron code, the command prompt might be different.

You can customize the prompt by changing the system name.

If you do not see one of these prompts:

1. Make sure the cable is securely connected to your PC and to the Foundry system.

2. Check the settings in your terminal emulation program. In addition to the session settings listed above, make sure the terminal emulation session is running on the same serial port you attached to the Foundry system.

The EIA/TIA 232 serial communication port serves as a connection point for management by a PC or SNMP workstation. The ServerIron comes with a standard male DB-9 connector, shown in Figure 3.2.

Most PC serial ports also require a cable with a female DB-9 connector.

Terminal connections will vary, requiring either a DB-9 or DB-25 connector, male or female.

Serial cable options between a Foundry switch or router and a PC or terminal are shown in Figure 3.3.

NOTE: As indicated in Figure 3.2 and Figure 3.3, some of the wires should not be connected. If you do connect the wires that are labeled Reserved, you might get unexpected results with some terminals.

Assigning IP AddressesFoundry devices are not pre-configured at the factory with IP addresses. You must assign an IP address using the serial connection to the CLI before you can manage the system using the other management interfaces.

Foundry devices support both classical IP network masks (Class A, B, and C sub-net masks, and so on) and prefix masks.

• To enter a classical network mask, enter the mask in IP address format. For example, enter "209.157.22.99 255.255.255.0" for an IP address with a Class-C sub-net mask.

• To enter a network mask using prefix addressing, enter a forward slash ( / ) and the number of bits in the mask immediately after the IP address. For example, enter "209.157.22.99/24" for an IP address that has a network mask with 24 significant ("mask") bits.

By default, the CLI displays network masks in classical IP address format (example: 255.255.255.0). You can change the display to prefix-addressing format. See the “Configuring IP and IP/RIP” chapter in the Foundry Switch and Router Installation and Basic Configuration Guide.

NOTE: If your network uses a BootStrap Protocol (BootP) server or a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, you can allow the Foundry device to obtain IP information from the server.

To assign a management IP Address to a ServerIron:

1. At the opening CLI prompt, enter enable.

ServerIron> enable

2. Enter the following command at the Privileged EXEC level prompt (for example, ServerIron#), then press Enter. This command erases the factory test configuration if still present:

ServerIron# erase startup-config

NOTE: Use this step only for new systems. If you enter this command on a system you have already configured, the command erases the configuration. If you accidentally do erase the configuration on a configured system, enter the write memory command to save the running configuration to the startup-config file.

3. Access the configuration level of the CLI by entering the following command:

4. Set the IP and mask addresses.

Mounting the ServerIron in an Equipment RackThis section describes how to install the ServerIron on a desktop or in an equipment rack. This section contains the following sections:

WARNING: Make sure the rack or cabinet housing the ServerIron is adequately secured to prevent it from becoming unstable or falling over.

WARNING: Mount the devices you install in a rack or cabinet as low as possible, placing the heaviest device at the bottom and progressively placing lighter devices above.

NOTE: If you are installing a ServerIron Chassis device, see the “Installing a Foundry Layer 2 Switch or Layer 3 Switch” chapter in the Foundry Switch and Router Installation and Basic Configuration Guide for installation instructions for chassis devices.

Desktop Installation for a ServerIron Chassis1. Set the ServerIron on a flat desktop, table, or shelf. Make sure that adequate ventilation is provided for the

system—a 3-inch clearance is recommended on each side.

2. Go to “Testing Connectivity” on page 3-13.

Rack Mount Installation for a ServerIron 4-Slot Chassis

NOTE: You need a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver for installation.

1. Remove the rack mount kit from the shipping carton. The kit contains two L-shaped mounting brackets and mounting screws.

2. Attach the mounting brackets to the sides of the ServerIron as illustrated in Figure 3.4.

3. Attach the ServerIron in the rack as illustrated in Figure 3.4.

Rack Mount Installation for a ServerIron 3-Slot ChassisTo get started, you need a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver and the rack mount kit, which was shipped with the switch. The kit contains sixteen screws (eight screws per side) to attach the rackmount brackets to the chassis unit), four screws (two per side) to mount the chassis unit to the rack, and two "long eared" mounting brackets.

NOTE: You can torque the screws from 6 to 8 inch-lbs.

NOTE: The product has been tested for dual RPS8 and additional weight.

To mount the brackets on the switch, follow these steps:

1. Remove the rack mount kit from the shipping carton.

2. Align the brackets with the screw holes on the switch as shown in Figure 3.5.

3. Attach the mounting brackets to the sides of the ServerIron with the sixteen screws.

To install the switch in the equipment rack, follow these steps:

1. Raise the switch to the level of the equipment rack.

2. Align the brackets with the screw holes on the equipment rack as shown in Figure 3.6.

Powering On the ServerIronAfter you complete the physical installation of the ServerIron, you can power on the system.

1. Remove the power cord from the shipping package.

2. Attach the AC power cable to the AC connector on the rear panel.

3. Insert the power cable plug into a 115V/120V outlet.

NOTE:

• Foundry devices are designed to provide uninterrupted service even when you insert or remove modules. Therefore, the systems do not have separate on/off power switches. To turn the system off, simply unplug the power cord(s).

• The socket should be installed near the equipment and should be easily accessible.

• If the outlet is not rated 115/120V, stop and get the appropriate cable for the outlet.

Connecting Network DevicesFoundry devices can support connections to other vendors’ routers, switches, and hubs as well other Foundry switches and routers.

The 8-port, 16-port, and 24-port ServerIrons all use 10BaseT/100BaseTX ports with RJ-45 jacks for standard unshielded twisted pair (UTP/Category 5) cable connections.

If you have the optional gigabit uplink, these devices support the following types of interfaces:

• 10BaseT/100BaseTX ports come with RJ45 jacks for standard unshielded twisted pair (UTP/Category 5) cable connections.

• 100BaseFX ports come equipped with SC(MMF) connectors.

• 1000BaseSX ports come equipped with SC(MMF) connectors.

• 1000BaseLX ports come equipped with SC(SMF) connectors.

• 1000BaseLH ports come equipped with SC(SMF) connectors.

Connecting to Workstations, Servers, or RoutersStraight-through UTP cabling is required for direct UTP attachment to workstations, servers, or routers using network interface cards (NICs).

Fiber cabling with SC connectors is required for direct attachment to Gigabit NICs or switches and routers.

Troubleshooting Network Connections• For the indicated port, verify that both ends of the cabling (at the ServerIron and at the connected device) are

snug.

• Verify that the ServerIron and the connected device are both powered on and operating correctly.

• Verify that you have used the correct cable type for the connection:

• For twisted-pair connections to an end node, use straight-through cabling.

• For fiber-optic connections, verify that the transmit port on the ServerIron is connected to the receive port on the connected device, and that the receive port on the ServerIron is connected to the transmit port on the connected device.

• Verify that the port has not been disabled through a configuration change. You can use the CLI. If you have configured an IP address on the device, you also can use the Web management interface.

• If the procedures above do not resolve the problem, try using a different port or a different cable.

Testing ConnectivityAfter you install the network cables, you can test network connectivity to other devices by pinging those devices. You also can perform trace routes.

Pinging an IP AddressTo verify that a ServerIron can reach another device through the network, enter a command such as the following at any level of the CLI:

LEDsThis section describes the front panel LEDs for the ServerIron 4G Series.

ResetThe reset button allows you to restart the system without switching the power supplies off and on or using the CLI. The reset button is located to the right of the serial management interface and is recessed to prevent you from accidentally pushing the button.

Console The console port is a serial management interface that allows you to configure and manage the device using a third-party terminal emulation application on a directly connected PC. A straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial cable (M/F) ships with the device. The console port is located in the left corner of the front panel.

Cooling SystemThe ServerIron 4G Series provides two three-speed fans that operate at high-speed by default. Both fans operate simultaneously at the same speed. If one fan fails, it does not affect the operation of the other fan.

The following fan speeds are available:

• low

• medium

• high

You can change the settings of the temperature thresholds using the following command:

ServerIron#fan-speed lo

Syntax: fan-speed lo | med | hi

Power SupplyEach ServerIron 4G Series switch comes with one RPS5 or RPS5DC power supply, depending upon the order. They all have two power supply slots, so you might want to install a second power supply for redundancy.

Table 4.2 lists the supported power supplies.

The supported power supplies can be swapped in or out of the device while the device is running. You can remove and insert a power supply without opening the chassis. If the device contains redundant power supplies, you can remove one of the supplies without interrupting operation. The remaining supply provides enough power for all the ports.

The RPS5 power supply is 100VAC @ 3.5A, 240VAC @ 1.5A, 50-60Hz, auto-sensing, and auto-switching. The RPS5DC is a 36-72 VDC power supply.

Figure 4.4 shows a rear view of a ServerIron 4G containing one RPS5 power supply.

Installation Location

Before installing the device, prepare its location and orientation relative to other devices and equipment. Allow at least 3" of space at the front of the device for the twisted-pair, fiber-optic, and power cabling. Also, allow a minimum of 3" of space between the sides and the back of the device and walls or other obstructions.

Package ContentsThe ServerIron 4G Series systems ship with the following items. Review the list below and verify the contents. If any items are missing, contact the place of purchase.

• Foundry Networks ServerIron 4G or ServerIron 4G-SSL device

• 115V AC power cable (for AC sourced devices)

• Rack mount brackets and mounting screws

General RequirementsTo manage the system, you need the following items for serial connection to the switch or router:

• A management station, such as a PC running a terminal emulation application.

• A straight-through EIA/TIA DB-9 serial cable (F/F).

You can separately order the serial cable from Foundry Networks. If you prefer to build your own cable, see the pinout information in “Attaching a PC or Terminal” on page 4-14.

You can use the serial connection to perform basic configuration tasks such as assigning an IP address and network mask to the system. For more information on basic configuration tasks, see: “Configuring an IP Address” on page 4-17.

WARNING: Do not use the handles on the power supply units to lift or carry a Foundry device.

Basic Installation TasksTo install your ServerIron 4G Series device, follow these guidelines.

1. Ensure that the physical environment that is to host the device has the proper cabling and ventilation. See: “Site Preparation” on page 4-6.

2. If you need to install a second or redundant power supply, it might be easier to install it before mounting the device. See: “Installing a Redundant Power Supply” on page 4-9.

3. Install the device on a desktop, on the wall, or in an equipment rack. See: “Installing a ServerIron 4G Series Device” on page 4-11.

4. Plug the device into a nearby power source that adheres to the regulatory requirements outlined in this manual. See: “Powering On the System” on page 4-12.

5. Verify that the system LEDs are registering the proper LED state after power-on of the system. See: “Checking the Power Status” on page 4-13.

6. Attach a terminal or PC to the device. See: “Attaching a PC or Terminal” on page 4-14.

7. No default password is assigned to the CLI. For additional access security, assign a password.

Installation PrecautionsRead these precautions before installing a Foundry device.

General Precautions

CAUTION: Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Lithium battery is a long life battery and it is very possible that you will never need to replace it. However, should you need to replace it, do not dispose of the battery along with household waste. Contact your local waste disposal agency for the address of the nearest battery deposit site.

WARNING: All fiber-optic interfaces use Class 1 lasers.

CAUTION: Do not install the device in an environment where the operating ambient temperature might exceed

40o C (104o F).

CAUTION: Make sure the air flow around the front, sides, and back of the device is not restricted.

Lifting Precautions

WARNING: Make sure the rack or cabinet housing the device is adequately secured to prevent it from becoming unstable or falling over.

WARNING: Do not use the handles on the power supply units to lift or carry a Foundry device.

WARNING: Mount the devices you install in a rack or cabinet as low as possible. Place the heaviest device at the bottom and progressively place lighter devices above.

Power Precautions

CAUTION: Use a separate branch circuit for each AC power cord, which provides redundancy in case one of the circuits fails.

CAUTION: Ensure that the device does not overload the power circuits, wiring, and over-current protection. To determine the possibility of overloading the supply circuits, add the ampere (amp) ratings of all devices installed on the same circuit as the device. Compare this total with the rating limit for the circuit. The maximum ampere rat-ings are usually printed on the devices near the input power connectors.

CAUTION: All devices with DC power supplies are intended for installation in restricted access areas only. A restricted access area is where access can be gained only by service personnel through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security, and is controlled by the authority responsible for the location.

CAUTION: For the DC input circuit to a ServerIron 4G Series, (DC power supply part number RPS5DC and RPS-X424-DC), make sure there is a 10-amp listed circuit breaker, minimum -48VDC, double pole, on the input to the terminal block. The input wiring for connection to the product should be Listed copper wire, 14 AWG, marked VW-1, and rated 90 degrees Celsius.

CAUTION: Make sure you insert the power supply right-side up. It is possible to insert the supply upside down, although the supply will not engage with the power backplane when upside down. The power supply is right-side up when the power connector is on the left and the fan vent is on the right.

CAUTION: Remove the power cord from a power supply before you install it in or remove it from the device. Otherwise, the power supply or the device could be damaged as a result. (The device can be running while a power supply is being installed or removed, but the power supply itself should not be connected to a power source.)

WARNING: Disconnect the power cord from all power sources to completely remove power from the device.

WARNING: Make sure to choose the appropriate circuit device depending on the number of AC power supplies installed in the chassis. The minimum current draw for the system is one AC power supply.

WARNING: Power supplies are hot swappable. However, Foundry Networks recommends that you disconnect the power supply from AC power before installing or removing the supply. The device can be running while a power supply is being installed or removed, but the power supply itself should not be connected to a power source. Otherwise, you could be injured or the power supply or other parts of the device could be damaged.

WARNING: Make sure that the power source circuits are properly grounded, then use the power cord supplied with the device to connect it to the power source.

WARNING: If the installation requires a different power cord than the one supplied with the device, make sure you use a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord can be used safely with the device.

Installing a Redundant Power SupplyThe ServerIron Stackable ships with one AC or DC power supply. You can install a second supply for redundancy.

If you need to install a redundant power supply, it might be easier to install it before mounting the device, although the power supplies are “hot swappable” and can be installed or removed after the device is mounted and powered on.

Installing an AC Power Supply

WARNING: Before beginning the installation, see the precautions in “Power Precautions” on page 4-8.

Use the following procedures for AC power supplies in ServerIron 4G devices.

To install an AC power supply, do the following:

1. If necessary, remove the power supply locking screw located in the center rear of the device (illustrated below).

2. If the empty power supply bay has a cover plate, press inward on the two latches near the edges of the cover plate to unlock the plate, then remove the plate.

3. Remove the power supply from its packaging.

4. With one hand, hold the bar on the front panel of the power supply. With the other hand, support the underside of the power supply, and insert the power supply into the empty power supply slot. Press until the supply is completely in the slot, so that the connectors on the back of the supply are fully engaged with the pins on the power backplane.

CAUTION: Make sure you insert the power supply right-side up. It is possible to insert the supply upside down, although the supply will not engage with the power backplane when upside down. The power supply is right-side up when the power connector is on the left and the fan vent is on the right.

5. Press the two latches near the edges of the supply outward to lock the supply in place.

6. Connect the power cord to the power supply.

7. Connect the plug end of the power cord into an outlet.

Installing a DC Power SupplyUse the following procedures for DC power supplies in ServerIron 4G devices.

WARNING: Before beginning the installation, see the precautions in “Power Precautions” on page 4-8.

1. If necessary, before installing a power supply, remove the power supply locking screw located in the center rear of the device (illustrated below).

2. If the empty power supply bay has a cover plate, press inward on the two latches near the edges of the cover plate to unlock the plate, then remove the plate.

3. Remove the power supply from its packaging.

4. Prepare the positive, negative, and ground wires by stripping about 1/4" of insulation off the end of each one. (Use 14 AWG wire.)

5. Loosen the three screws used to hold the wires in the connector. These are the wires under the following markings:

6. Slip the ground wire into the opening under the marking until the wire is fully in place, then tighten the screw to hold the wire in place.

7. Repeat for the negative (—) and positive (+) wires.

8. Pull gently on each wire to make sure they are securely fastened in the connector.

9. With one hand, hold the bar on the front panel of the power supply. With the other hand, support the underside of the power supply, and insert the power supply into the empty power supply slot. Press until the supply is completely in the slot, so that the connectors on the back of the supply are fully engaged with the pins on the power backplane.

10. Press the two latches near the edges of the supply outward to lock the supply in place.

11. If necessary, replace the power supply locking screw.

12. After the power supply is properly inserted, connect the power source to the wires to activate the circuit.

Installing a ServerIron 4G Series DeviceYou can install a ServerIron 4G Series device on a desktop, in an equipment rack, or on the wall. This section contains the following sections:

Wall Mount Installation1. To mount the device on a wall, you must order and install the Wall Mount Bracket kit (part number 70076-

000). Follow the instructions included in the kit to mount the device on a wall.

2. Proceed to “Powering On the System” on page 4-12.

Rack Mount Installation

NOTE: You need a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver for installation.

1. Remove the rack mount kit from the shipping carton. The kit contains two L-shaped mounting brackets and mounting screws.

2. Attach the mounting brackets to the sides of the device as illustrated in Figure 4.6.

3. Attach the device in the rack as illustrated in Figure 4.6.

4. Proceed to “Powering On the System” on page 4-12.

Powering On the SystemAfter you complete the physical installation of the system, you can power on the system.

1. Ensure that all power supplies are fully and properly inserted and no power supply slots are uncovered.

CAUTION: Never leave tools inside the device.

2. Remove the power cord from the shipping package.

3. Attach the AC power cable to the AC connector on the rear panel.

4. Insert the power cable plug into a 115V/120V outlet.

NOTE: To turn the system off, simply unplug the power cord(s).

NOTE: The socket should be installed near the equipment and should be easily accessible.

NOTE: If the outlet is not rated 115/120V, stop and get the appropriate cable for the outlet.

Verifying Proper OperationAfter you have installed any redundant power supplies, verify that the device is working properly by plugging it into a power source and verifying that it passes its self test.

If your device has more than one power supply installed, repeat this procedure for each power supply.

1. Connect the power cord supplied with the device to the power connector on the power supply on the rear of the device.

2. Insert the other end into a properly grounded electrical outlet.

3. Because ServerIron 4G Series devices use power supply model RPS5, they do not have power switches. These switches power on when you connect a power cord to the device and to a power source.

If your installation requires a different power cord than that supplied with the device, make sure you obtain a power cord displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for power cords in your country. The mark is your assurance that the power cord can be used safely with the device.

4. Verify that the LED for each power supply is a solid green.

5. Verify proper operation by observing the LEDs:

All the port LEDs should flash momentarily, usually in sequence, while the device performs diagnostics. After the diagnostics are complete, the LEDs will be dark except for the ones that are attached by cables to other devices. If the links on these cables are good and the connected device is powered on, the link LEDs will light.

For more details on specific LED conditions after system start-up, see the section below, “Checking the Power Status” on page 4-13 and “Technical Specifications” on page 4-24.

Checking the Power StatusTable 4.3 lists the LEDs that show power status. The power supplies themselves do not have LEDs.

The software regularly polls the hardware for power status information. You can display the status information from any management session. In addition, the software automatically generates a Syslog message and SNMP trap if a status change occurs.

Attaching a PC or TerminalTo assign an IP address, you must have access to the Command Line Interface (CLI). The CLI is a text-based interface that can be accessed through a direct serial connection to the device and through Telnet connections. .

You need to assign an IP address using the CLI. You can access the CLI by attaching a serial cable to the Console port. After you assign an IP address, you can access the system through Telnet, the Web management interface, or IronView Network Manager.

To attach a management station using the serial port:

1. Connect a PC or terminal to the serial port of the system using a straight-through cable. The serial port has a male DB-9 connector.

NOTE: You need to run a terminal emulation program on the PC.

2. Open the terminal emulation program and set the session parameters as follows:

• Baud: 9600 bps

• Data bits: 8

• Parity: None

• Stop bits: 1

• Flow control: None

When you establish the serial connection to the system, press Enter to display the CLI prompt in the terminal emulation window. For example:

• ServerIron>

• ServerIron-PREM>

If you see one of these prompts, you are now connected to the system and can proceed to “Assigning Permanent Passwords” on page 4-15.

You can customize the prompt by changing the system name.

If you do not see one of these prompts:

1. Make sure the cable is securely connected to your PC and to the Foundry system.

2. Check the settings in your terminal emulation program. In addition to the session settings listed above, make sure the terminal emulation session is running on the same serial port you attached to the Foundry system.

The EIA/TIA 232 serial communication port serves as a connection point for management by a PC or SNMP workstation. Foundry switches and Layer 3 Switches come with a standard male DB-9 connector, shown in Figure 4.7.

Most PC serial ports also require a cable with a female DB-9 connector.

Terminal connections will vary, requiring either a DB-9 or DB-25 connector, male or female.

Serial cable options between a Foundry switch or router and a PC or terminal are shown in Figure 4.8.

NOTE: As indicated in Figure 4.7 and Figure 4.8, some of the wires should not be connected. If you do connect the wires that are labeled “Reserved”, you might get unexpected results with some terminals.

Assigning Permanent PasswordsBy default, the CLI is not protected by passwords. To secure CLI access, Foundry strongly recommends assigning passwords.

NOTE: You cannot assign a password using the Web management interface. You can assign passwords using IronView Network Manager if an enable password for a Super User has been configured on the device.

The CLI contains the following access levels:

• User EXEC – The level you enter when you first start a CLI session. At this level, you can view some system information but you cannot configure system or port parameters.

• Privileged EXEC – This level is also called the Enable level and can be secured by a password. You can perform tasks such as manage files on the flash module, save the system configuration to flash, and clear caches at this level.

• CONFIG – The configuration level. This level lets you configure the system’s IP address and configure switching and routing features. To access the CONFIG mode, you must already be logged into the Privileged level of the EXEC mode.

You can set the following levels of Enable passwords:

• Super User – Allows complete read-and-write access to the system. This is generally for system administrators and is the only password level that allows you to configure passwords.

NOTE: You must set a super user password before you can set other types of passwords.

• Port Configuration – Allows read-and-write access for specific ports but not for global (system-wide) parameters.

• Read Only – Allows access to the Privileged EXEC mode and CONFIG mode but only with read access.

To set passwords:

1. At the opening CLI prompt, enter the following command to change to the Privileged level of the EXEC mode:

ServerIron> enable

2. Access the CONFIG level of the CLI by entering the following command:

ServerIron# configure terminal

ServerIron(config)#

3. Enter the following command to set the super-user password:

ServerIron(config)# enable super-user-password <text>

NOTE: You must set the super-user password before you can set other types of passwords.

4. Enter the following commands to set the port configuration and read-only passwords:

ServerIron(config)# enable port-config-password <text>

ServerIron(config)# enable read-only-password <text>

NOTE: If you forget your super-user password, see “Recovering a Lost Password” on page 4-16.

Syntax: enable super-user-password | read-only-password | port-config-password <text>

Passwords can be up to 32 characters long.

Recovering a Lost PasswordBy default, the CLI does not require passwords. However, if someone has configured a password for the device but the password has been lost, you can regain super-user access to the device using the following procedure.

NOTE: Recovery from a lost password requires direct access to the serial port and a system reset.

To recover from a lost password:

1. Start a CLI session over the serial interface to the Foundry device.

2. Reboot the device.

3. While the system is booting, before the initial system prompt appears, enter b to enter the boot monitor mode.

4. Enter no password at the prompt. (You cannot abbreviate this command.)

5. Enter boot system flash primary at the prompt. This command causes the device to bypass the system password check.

6. After the console prompt reappears, assign a new password.

Configuring an IP AddressYou must configure at least one IP address using the serial connection to the CLI before you can manage the system using the other management interfaces. In addition, Foundry routers require an IP subnet address for the subnet in which you plan to place them in your network.

Foundry devices support both classical IP network masks (Class A, B, and C subnet masks, and so on) and Classless Interdomain Routing (CIDR) network prefix masks.

• To enter a classical network mask, enter the mask in IP address format. For example, enter “209.157.22.99 255.255.255.0” for an IP address with a Class-C subnet mask.

• To enter a prefix number for a network mask, enter a forward slash ( / ) and the number of bits in the mask immediately after the IP address. For example, enter “209.157.22.99/24” for an IP address that has a network mask with 24 significant (“mask”) bits.

By default, the CLI displays network masks in classical IP address format (example: 255.255.255.0). You can change the display to the prefix format.

NOTE: If your network uses a BootStrap Protocol (BootP) server or a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, you can allow the Foundry device to obtain IP addresses for the hosts on the network.

Connecting to Fast Ethernet HubsFor copper connections to Ethernet hubs, a 10/100BaseTX or 1000BaseT switch, or another Foundry device, a crossover cable is required (Figure 4.9 and Figure 4.10). If the hub is equipped with an uplink port, it will require a straight-through cable instead of a crossover cable.

NOTE: The 802.3ab standard (automatic MDI/MDIX detection) calls for automatic negotiation of the connection between two 1000Base-T ports. Therefore, a crossover cable may not be required; a straight-through cable may work as well.

Fiber cabling is required for direct attachment to Gigabit NICs or switches and routers via fiber ports. See “Connecting to a Fiber Port” on page 4-19.

Automatic MDI/MDIX Detection

All 100/1000 Ethernet Copper ports on the Foundry ServerIron devices support automatic Media Dependent Interface (MDI) and Media Dependent Interface Crossover (MDIX) detection. This feature is enabled on all 100/1000 copper ports by default. For each port, you can disable auto MDI/MDIX, designate the port as an MDI port, or designate the port as an MDIX port..

Connecting to a Fiber PortFor direct attachment from the Foundry device to a Gigabit NIC, switch, or router, fiber cabling with an LC connector is required.

To connect the Foundry device to another network device using a fiber port, you must do the following:

• Install a fiber optic module (SFP transceiver or mini-GBIC for Gigabit Ethernet ports)

• Cable the fiber optic module

The following sections provide information about performing these tasks.

Installing a Fiber Optic Module

You must install a fiber optic module (SFP) in each Gigabit Ethernet fiber port you want to use.

You can install a new copper or fiber optic module in a port while the ServerIron Stackable is powered on and running.

Before installing one of these modules into the port, have the following on hand:

• An ESD wrist strap with a plug for connection to a metal surface.

WARNING: For safety reasons, the ESD wrist strap should contain a series 1 meg ohm resistor.

To install a copper or fiber optic module, do the following:

1. Put on the ESD wrist strap and ground yourself by attaching the clip end to a metal surface (such as an equipment rack) to act as ground.

2. Remove the new module from its protective packaging.

3. Gently insert the copper or fiber optic module into the port until the module clicks into place. The module is keyed to prevent incorrect insertion.

Cabling a Fiber Optic Module

To cable a fiber optic module, do the following:

1. Remove the protective covering from the fiber-optic port connectors and store the covering for future use.

2. Before cabling a fiber optic module, Foundry strongly recommends cleaning the cable connectors and the port connectors. For more information, see “Cleaning the Fiber-Optic Connectors” on page 4-19.

3. Gently insert the cable connector(s) (a tab on each connector should face upward) into the port connector(s) until the tabs lock into place.

4. Observe the link and active LEDs to determine if the network connections are functioning properly. For more information about the LED indicators, see Table 4.4 on page 4-21.

Cleaning the Fiber-Optic Connectors

To avoid problems with the connection between the fiber optic module (SFP (mini-GBIC) or XFP) and the fiber cable connectors, Foundry strongly recommends cleaning both connectors each time you disconnect and

reconnect them. In particular, dust can accumulate in the connectors and cause problems such as reducing the optic launch power.

To clean the fiber cable connectors, Foundry recommends using the fiber-optic reel-type cleaner that shipped with your ServerIron chassis. You can also purchase this type of cleaner from the following Website:

When not using an SFP or XFP connector, make sure to keep the protective covering on.

Testing ConnectivityAfter you install the network cables, you can test network connectivity to other devices by pinging those devices. You also can observe the LEDs related to network connection and perform trace routes.

Pinging an IP AddressTo verify that a Foundry device can reach another device through the network, enter a command such as the following at any level of the CLI on the Foundry device:

ServerIron> ping 192.33.4.7

Syntax: ping <ip addr> | <hostname> [source <ip addr>] [count <num>] [timeout <msec>] [ttl <num>] [size <byte>] [quiet] [numeric] [no-fragment] [verify] [data <1-to-4 byte hex>] [brief]

NOTE: If you address the ping to the IP broadcast address, the device lists the first four responses to the ping.

Observing LEDsAfter you install the network cables, you can observe certain LEDs to determine if the network connections are functioning properly. Table 4.4 outlines the LEDs related to the network connections, the desired state of each LED, possible abnormal states of each LED, and what to do if an LED indicates an abnormal state.

• Verify that the port has not been disabled through a configuration change. You can use the CLI. If you have configured an IP address on the device, you also can use the Web management interface or IronView Network Manager.

The CLI displays trace route information for each hop as soon as the information is received. Traceroute requests display all responses to a given TTL. In addition, if there are multiple equal-cost routes to the destination, the Foundry device displays up to three responses by default.

Troubleshooting Network Connections• For the indicated port, verify that both ends of the cabling (at the Foundry device and the connected device)

are snug.

• Verify that the Foundry device and the connected device are both powered on and operating correctly.

• Verify that you have used the correct cable type for the connection:

• For twisted-pair connections to an end node, use straight-through cabling.

• For fiber-optic connections, verify that the transmit port on the device is connected to the receive port on the connected device, and that the receive port on the device is connected to the transmit port on the connected device.

• Verify that the port has not been disabled through a configuration change. You can use the CLI. If you have configured an IP address on the device, you also can use the Web management interface or IronView Network Manager.

• If the other procedures don’t resolve the problem, try using a different port or a different cable.

Managing Temperature SettingsThis section describes how to display temperature settings on the ServerIron and how to change the temperature warning and shutdown levels.

Using the Temperature Sensor The ServerIron comes with a built-in temperature sensor. The temperature sensor causes the device to generate a Syslog message and SNMP trap if the temperature exceeds a specified warning level or shutdown level. If the device’s temperature exceeds the safe threshold (shutdown level), the device will shut itself down.

The software reads the temperature sensor according to the chassis poll time, which is 60 seconds by default. If the temperature equals or exceeds the shutdown temperature for five consecutive polls of the temperature by the software, the software will shut down the device to prevent damage.

You can use the CLI to do the following:

• Display the temperature of the device

• Change the warning and shutdown temperature levels

• Change the chassis poll time

Viewing Fan Speed Switches and Temperature ThresholdsYou can view the speed at which the fans are currently operating and the configured temperature thresholds for fan speed switching. To display the temperature of a device, enter the following command at any level of the CLI:

Syntax: show chassis

By default, the software polls the temperature sensor every 60 seconds to get the current temperature. This poll rate is controlled by the chassis poll time, which also controls how often the software polls other system components.

Displaying Temperature MessagesThe software sends a Syslog message and an SNMP trap if the temperature crosses the warning or shutdown thresholds. The following methods describe how to view the system log on the device. If you have configured the device to use a Syslog server or SNMP trap receiver, see the documentation for the server or receiver.

To display the system log, enter the following command at any CLI level:

Changing the Temperature Warning LevelThe Foundry device sends a warning message whenever the device’s internal temperature reaches the default or

configured warning temperature. The default warning temperature is 450 C degrees. You can change the warning temperature using the following command.

Changing the Chassis Temperature Polling IntervalThe software reads the temperature sensor and polls other hardware sensors according to the value set for the chassis poll time, which is 60 seconds by default. You can change the chassis poll time using the CLI.

To change the chassis poll time, enter a command such as the following at the global CONFIG level of the CLI:

ServerIron(config)# chassis poll-time 200

Syntax: chassis poll-time <value>

The <value> can be 0 – 65535.

Managing Fan Settings and Temperature SensorsThe ServerIron 4G Series has two three-speed fans that operate at hi speed. Both fans operate simultaneously at the same speed. If one fan fails, it does not affect the operation of the other fan.The fans can operate at speeds of low, medium, and high.

Displaying Management Module CPU UsageYou can display the amount of the management module’s CPU in use. To do so, enter the following command at any level of the CLI:

Syntax: show cpu

Examine the CPU Usage (%) field to determine the percentage of the management module’s CPU used by each task.

The total CPU usage may not add up to 100 percent. The total may not include resources used by the management processes.

A problem could exist If the CPU usage is distributed unevenly to one task, other than the idle task, for a prolonged period. If this situation occurs, contact Foundry’s technical support for assistance.

The input wiring for connection to the product should be Listed copper wire, 14 AWG, marked VW-1, and rated 90 degrees Celsius.

CAUTION: Make sure you insert the power supply right-side up. It is possible to insert the supply upside down, although the supply will not engage with the power backplane when upside down. The power supply is right-side up when the power connector is on the left and the fan vent is on the right.

CAUTION: Use the erase startup-config command only for new systems. If you enter this command on a system you have already configured, the command erases the configuration. If you accidentally do erase the configuration on a configured system, enter the write memory command to save the running configuration to the startup-config file.

Deployment OverviewThis chapter describes several network design alternatives for the ServerIron 4G series switches. It also gives guidelines for deploying these designs in the field. The ServerIron 4G series are compact, small form-factor application switches offering four copper/fiber combination ports for maximum media flexibility. These switches require TrafficWorks software release 9.5.02 or later and support all the features and functionalities of the higher-end ServerIron systems. Additionally, the ServerIron 4G series provide support for redundant and DC power supplies. The ServerIron 4G series are the most feature-rich, aggressively-priced entry level switches in the market.

Design 1: Highly Available One-ArmFigure 5.1 shows the ServerIron 4G series in a Highly Available One-Arm design.

Design #1 in Figure 5.1 above shows ServerIron 4G/4G-SSL switches that are configured One-Arm to an upstream network device. These switches are enabled for either Hot-Standby or Sym-Active High-Availability (HA) mode. Each of the two ServerIron switches is connected to an upstream layer 2/3 switch through multi-port trunk link. Additionally, a 2-port dedicated trunk link can be provisioned between the peer ServerIrons for session synchronization traffic.

Design #1 requires you to enable source NAT on ServerIron or configure ServerIron as default gateway for the application servers. These configurations ensure that the return traffic flows through the ServerIron. Alternatively, you can enable Direct Server Return (DSR) mode to let response flow directly to the clients. The DSR mode requires the application servers to be in the same layer 2 domain as the ServerIron.

Design #2A in Figure 5.2 above shows the ServerIron 4G/4G-SSL switches positioned inline with the application servers and enabled for Hot-Standby HA mode. A 2-port trunk link is provisioned between the peer ServerIrons to carry session synchronization traffic. There are no spanning tree loops as the standby ServerIron is not passing any traffic packets.

The upstream and the downstream connections from the ServerIron are through single port links. This however is circumvented as both ServerIrons actively monitor router and server ports. In the event of link failure, the master ServerIron unit switches over to the standby unit and thereby prevents session loss.

NOTE: The Hot-Standby HA mode works with the ServerIron switch release (layer 2) only.

NOTE: If one of the downstream layer 2 switches fails then one half of the application servers become unavailable.

Design #2B in Figure 5.3 above shows the ServerIron 4G/4G-SSL switches positioned inline with the application servers and enabled for Sym-Active HA mode. There is no provision for the dedicated sync link as all of the four switch-ports are consumed to provide connectivity to upstream and downstream devices. The peer switches then rely on any available layer 2 connectivity for session synchronization.

Design #2B above involves creating separate VLANs on either side of the ServerIron. There are no traffic loops with design #2B and it completely avoids spanning tree. Additionally, enable VRRP-E tracking mechanism for monitoring link failures. Also define VIP-groups and associate those with VRRP-E such that the VIP ownership follows the VRRP-E master ServerIron.

NOTE: The VRRP-E tracking mechanism is available with the ServerIron router release (layer 3) and hence the above design is recommended with router releases only.

Design #2C in Figure 4.4 above is a variant of previous design #2B. In this design, the ServerIron switches are connected via criss-cross links to upstream/downstream devices instead of multi-port trunk links as in the previous design. The design also calls for enabling spanning tree protocol on upstream and downstream devices to prevent traffic loops. Additionally, VRRP-E can be enabled to track link failures.

Design 3A: SSL Appliance Mode-1Figure 5.6 shows the ServerIron 4G Series in SSL Appliance Mode with a 4G-SSL connected directly to an upstream ServerIron.

Design #3A in Figure 5.6 above highlights another interesting deployment of the ServerIron 4G-SSL switches. It describes how these switches can be used to complement an existing load balancing infrastructure that is built around higher end ServerIron systems.

In Design #3A, the primary ServerIrons each use a directly connected 4G-SSL switch to offload SSL traffic. They do not use a 4G-SSL switch connected off the other ServerIron unit. The non-SSL VIPs are created on the primary ServerIron; whereas SSL VIPs are hosted on the 4G-SSL switches. When the primary ServerIrons receive SSL traffic, they pass it over to the 4G-SSL switches. These switches then terminate SSL connections and load balance them to the backend real servers through non-SSL VIPs defined on the primary ServerIron.

The design helps scale the ServerIron SSL offering. Multiple 4G-SSL switches may be combined to cater heavy SSL connection load.

NOTE: In the event of primary ServerIron switch failure, all 4G-SSL switches connected off that failed unit become unusable.

NOTE: The design is easy to maintain and troubleshoot due to simplistic traffic flow.

Open the Device

NOTE: You need a Phillips screwdriver to perform this procedure. You also need a static-free work area.

Put on an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) wrist strap and attach the clip end to a metal surface (such as an equipment rack) to act as ground.

To open the device, follow these steps:

1. Power down the device. For both AC and DC, turn OFF the power supply and disconnect the power cable.

2. Take the DIP key (EEPROM) out of the box and align the lead pins over the DIP socket.

NOTE: The circular or semicircular indentation on the DIP key indicates the position of lead pin 1. Make sure this pin is aligned over the upper left hole on the DIP socket, when the front of the module is facing you. The previous graphic shows the location of the DIP socket and the hole.

3. If the lead pins on the DIP key do not fit over the DIP socket holes, gently straighten the pins as shown in the following graphic.

4. Insert the DIP key (EEPROM) into the DIP socket on the main board.

WARNING: If you accidentally insert the upgrade DIP key backwards, the device will not work and can get dam-aged when you power it on.

5. If the DIP key lead pins align properly over the DIP socket, verify that the circular or semicircular indentation that marks lead pin 1 on the DIP key is aligned over the hole in the upper left corner of the DIP socket (when the front of the SI 4G is facing you).

6. Gently but firmly press down on the top of the DIP key to insert it into the DIP socket.

NOTE: Do not push too hard. If the DIP key does not readily go into the DIP socket, stop pushing and verify that the lead pins are straightened and properly aligned over the holes. Straighten any lead pins that need straightening, then try again.

7. Reassemble the device and place in rack.

8. Re-insert the power cable(s) in the power supply(ies) to power on the device.

Install the SoftwareAfter you complete the EEPROM upgrade, you are ready to upgrade the boot code and flash code. You must upgrade the boot code first, then upgrade the flash code.

WARNING: Complete the EEPROM installation before loading the TrafficWorks 09.5.02 (or later) software. If you load the new software before completing the EEPROM upgrade, you cannot boot the device.

WARNING: Do not reboot until you have upgraded MP & BP boot and flash image files (Total 4 image files).

1. Copy the flash code and startup-config files that are currently in flash memory onto a TFTP server for backup.

2. Copy the MP boot code and BP boot code onto a TFTP server to which the ServerIron has network access.

3. Enter the following command at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the MP boot code onto the ServerIron:

<image-file-name> is the BP boot code image (for example, WJS09502.bin).

5. Enter the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the MP flash code onto the ServerIron:

copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> primary

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server

<image-file-name> is the MP flash code image (for example, WZR09502.bin).

NOTE: Do not copy the code onto the secondary flash area. If you do, the device cannot boot properly. Only after you successfully boot using the 09.5.02 release, can you copy flash code into the secondary flash area.

6. Enter the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the BP flash code onto the ServerIron:

wsm copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> primary

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server<image-file-name> is the MP flash code image (for example, WZB09502.bin).

7. Reload the software by entering the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI:

NOTE: Configuration changes might be needed when you move from a switch to a router image or to a higher release of the software image.

NOTE: This upgrade procedure applies to JetCore based WSM6 and WSM7 Management Modules.

Upgrade Overview

NOTE: You need a flat-blade screwdriver to perform this procedure. You also need a static-free work area.

1. Power down the chassis and remove the Web Switching Management Module from the chassis and place it on a static-free work area.

2. Insert the Dual Inline Package (DIP) key (the EEPROM) provided in this upgrade kit into the DIP socket on the Web Switching Management Module.

WARNING: Make sure you insert the DIP key so that lead pin 1 goes into the hole in the upper left corner of the DIP socket (when the front of the Web Switching Management Module is facing you). If you accidentally insert the upgrade DIP key backwards, the device will not work and may be damaged when you power it on.

3. Re-insert the Web Switching Management Module in the chassis and power on the chassis.

4. Install ServerIron TrafficWorks 09.x.xx boot and flash code and reboot.

WARNING: Complete the EEPROM installation before loading the TrafficWorks 09.x.xx or later software. If you load the new software before completing the EEPROM upgrade, you will not be able to boot the device.

Install the EEPROMTo install the firmware upgrade, follow these steps:

1. Put on the supplied ESD wrist strap and attach the clip end to a metal surface (such as an equipment rack) to act as ground.

2. Turn OFF the power supply and remove the power cable(s) from the chassis power supply(ies).

3. Use the flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the two screws at either end of the Web Switching Management Module.

4. Pull the ejector handles (located near the screws) away from the Web Switching Management Module to disengage the module from the backplane.

NOTE: If the module is too tight, loosen a module above or next to the Web Switching Management Module.

5. Firmly pull the Web Switching Management Module out of the slot and place it on a static-free work area.

6. Locate the DIP socket on the Web Switching Management Module. The DIP socket is located at the front of the module, behind the status LEDs for WSM CPUs. See Figure 6.2 on page 6-8.

7. Remove the DIP key from the package and align the lead pins over the DIP socket. The circular or semicircular indentation on the DIP key indicates the position of lead pin 1. Make sure this pin is aligned over the upper left hole on the DIP socket, when the front of the module is facing you. Figure 6.2 on page 6-8 shows the location of the DIP socket and the hole.

NOTE: If the lead pins on the DIP key do not fit over the DIP socket holes, gently straighten the pins as shown in Figure 6.3 on page 6-8.

10. Insert the Web Switching Management Module into the chassis slot and glide the module along the module guide until the ejector handles on the front of the module touch the chassis.

11. Push the ejector handles toward the center of the Web Switching Management Module until they are flush with the front panel of the module. The module will be fully seated in the backplane.

12. Tighten the two screws at either end of the Web Switching Management Module.

NOTE: If you loosened the screws on other modules to free the Web Switching Management Module, make sure those modules also are fully seated and retighten their screws.

13. Re-insert the power cable(s) in the power supply(ies) to power on the device.

Install the SoftwareAfter you complete the EEPROM upgrade, you are ready to upgrade the boot code and flash code. You must upgrade the boot code first, then upgrade the flash code.

WARNING: Complete the EEPROM installation before loading the TrafficWorks 09.x.xx or later software. If you load the new software before completing the EEPROM upgrade, you will not be able to boot the device.

2. Copy the MP boot code and WSM CPU boot code onto a TFTP server to which the ServerIron has network access.

3. Enter the following command at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the MP boot code onto the ServerIron:

copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> boot

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server

<image-file-name> is the MP boot code image (for example, M2B09502.bin).

4. Enter the following command at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the WSM CPU boot code onto the ServerIron:

wsm copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> boot

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server

<image-file-name> is the WSM CPU boot code image (for example, W2B09502.bin).

5. Enter the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the MP flash code onto the ServerIron:

copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> primary

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server

<image-file-name> is the MP flash code image (for example, WXR09502.bin).

NOTE: Do not copy the code onto the secondary flash area. If you do, the device will not boot properly. Only after you successfully boot using the 09.x.xx release, can you copy flash code into the secondary flash area.

6. Enter the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI to copy the WSM CPU flash code onto the ServerIron:

wsm copy tftp flash <ip-addr> <image-file-name> primary

where:

<ip-addr> is the IP address of the TFTP server

<image-file-name> is the MP flash code image (for example, WXB09502.bin).

7. Reload the software by entering the following command to at the Privileged Exec level of the CLI:

reload

8. Configuration changes may be needed when you move from a switch to a router image or to a higher release of the software image.
