Order of Service Opening Hymn 593 (Youth Organisations will process and flags will be received during the Opening Hymn)

(Flag bearers—Ellen Armstrong & Katie Graham, Kate Mc Niece & Laura Turner, Peter Armstrong, Alec Donaghey, Alfie Graham, Evan Clarke, and Iona Tyson)

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;

be thou for ever near me, my Master and my Friend. I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side,

nor wander from the pathway, if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear;

my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will.

O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control: O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee,

that where thou art in glory, there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;

O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to duly follow is in thy strength alone.

O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.

For failing you by what we do, and think and say; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. For letting ourselves be drawn away from you by temptations in the world about us; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. For living as if we were ashamed to belong to your Son; Father, forgive us: save us and help us. Absolution May God ,our heavenly Father forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty God, you show to those who are in error the light of your truth that they may return to the way of righteousness: Grant to all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may reject those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hymn 325

Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here. Come, bow before him now, with reverence and fear.

In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around; he burns with holy fire, with splendour he is crowned. How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light!

Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.

Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place, he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace.

No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him; be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

Dave Evans (bl957) based on Exodus 3: 1-6

1st Reading Genesis 17: 1-7, 15-16

Read by: Meabh Hambley (Brownie) and Adam Armstrong (Cub Scout)

The first reading is from the book of Genesis , chapter 17 reading from verse 1.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’ 3 Abram fell face down, and God said to him, 4 ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

15 God also said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.’

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn 386 Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,

gentle as is the dove; teach us the truth and help us believe,

show us the Saviour’s love.

You spoke to us long, long ago, gave us the written word,

we read it still, needing its truth, through it God’s voice is heard.

Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,

gentle as is the dove; teach us the truth and help us believe,

show us the Saviour’s love.

Without your help we fail our Lord, we cannot live his way;

we need your power, we need your strength, following Christ each day.

Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,

gentle as is the dove; teach us the truth and help us believe,

show us the Saviour’s love.

2nd Reading Read by: Rebecca Dickson (Guide)

Matthew 11: 25-30

Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to Saint Matthew, chapter 11, beginning to read at verse 25. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 25 At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 ‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Offertory Hymn 112

There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son,

precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.

Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving the Spirit

till the work on earth is done.

Jesus my Redeemer, name above all names,

precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain.

When I stand in glory

I will see his face, and there I’ll serve my King forever

in that holy place.

Closing Prayers & Blessing HYMN 658 (and return of Flags)

One more step along the world I go, one more step along the world I go;

from the old things to the new keep me travelling along with you:

And it’s from the old I travel to the new;

keep me travelling along with you.

Round the corner of the world I turn, more and more about the world I learn;

all the new things that I see you’ll be looking at along with me:

As I travel through the bad and good, keep me travelling the way I should;

where I see no way to go you’ll be telling me the way, I know:

Give me courage when the world is rough, keep me loving though the world is tough;

leap and sing in all I do, keep me travelling along with you:

You are older than the world can be, you are younger than the life in me;

ever old and ever new, keep me travelling along with you:
