Preview Foundation Stone #8: Healing Hands

1. Healing is just one of many blessings God has for us.

2. When we want God’s healing, we just ask, believing.

3. To be healed, your heart has to trust and honor the Lord.

4. The most common method for healing is laying on hands.

5. Jesus’ blood bought our sins. His wounds bought our health.

6. Jesus said that those who believe Him will heal the sick.

7. The church elders should be the first stop for your healing.

8. We must speak aloud our faith. Our tongues have power.

9. Another method to acquire God’s healing is by fasting.

10. If you don’t believe you can be healed, then you won’t be.

11. Keeping sin in your life will also prevent your healing.

12. Eating the Lord’s Supper unworthily will cost your health.

Q1:

Name some of the promised blessings of God.

Q1: Name some of the promised

blessings of God.

A1: There are SO many! Healing is just one of the many benefits of belonging to God.

R1: Psalm 103:2-5

Psalm 103:2-5 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Q2:

When we need healing, how do we get it? Do we have to do strange, mystical things?

Q2: When we need healing, how do we get it? Do we have to do strange, mystical things?

A2: We have to ask God for healing. We have to call to Him. We have to recognize that He is our healer, whether is comes miraculously or from the natural cures He created for us or from the results of medicines made of chemicals he created for us.

R2: Psalm 30:2; Jeremiah 17:14

Psalm 30:2 O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.

Jeremiah 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

Q3:

What attitude of the heart is required for healing?

Q3: What attitude of the heart is required

for healing?

A3: Trust, honor and fear the Lord from the heart to be healed.

R3: Proverbs 3:5-10

Proverbs 3:5-10

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Q4:

How did Jesus, the Apostles and church elders heal the sick?

Q4: How did Jesus, the Apostles and

church elders heal the sick?

A4: Healing was most often done by laying hands on the sick.

R4: Luke 4:40; Acts 3:6-9; Acts 28:8,9 and

James 5:14-16

Luke 4:40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.

Acts 3:6-9 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Acts 28:8,9 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.

James 5:14-16 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Q5:

Everything powerful has a price. Where does the power for healing come from?

Q5: Everything powerful has a price. Where

does the power for healing come from?

A5: Like our sins were paid for when Jesus lost His blood, the Bible says our healing was paid for when Jesus' back was whipped.

R5: Isaiah 53:4-6; John 19:1-3 and I Peter 2:4

Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

John 19:1-3 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.

I Peter 2:4 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

Q6:

These things happened long, long ago. Why should we think that it still happens today?

Q6: These things happened long, long ago. Why should we think that it still happens today?

A6: If we believe any of the words of Jesus, we should believe every word He spoke. And He said that those who believe the gospel will heal the sick.

R6: Mark 16:15-18

Mark 16:15-18 Then he said to them, "As you go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who doesn't believe will be condemned. "These are the signs that will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands; even if they drink any deadly poison it will not hurt them; and they will place their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

(Revelation 22:19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.)

Q7:

Is there a proper time and place for receiving healing today?

Q7: Is there a proper time and place for receiving healing today?

A7: There is a best place: The church should provide healing services, letting people know that they can come to the church elders to receive anointing with oil and healing. The Bible says leaders who don't heal their people are bad.

R7: James 5:14-16; Ezekiel 34:2-4; Matthew 9:35,36

James 5:14-16 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Matthew 9:35,36 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Ezekiel 34:2-4 "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.

Q8:

Are hands alone required to pass on God's healing power?

Q8: Are hands alone required to pass on God's healing power?

A8: No, the tongue is also very important. What you and I say is powerful. Our words demonstrate our faith. If we really believe, we will speak words of faith.

R8: Proverbs 15:4; 12:18; 18:21; Matthew 8:5-10

Proverbs 15:4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 12:18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Matthew 8:5-10 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

Q9:

Are there other ideas in the Bible about how to receive healing?

Q9: Are there other ideas in the Bible about how to receive healing?

A9: Yes, the Bible often mentions fasting-going without food and/or drink for a certain time. But fasting has to be done in a way that pleases God, not the one who fasts.

R9: Isaiah 58:6-9

Isaiah 58:6-9 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

Q10:

What's the biggest thing that can prevent you from receiving healing?

Q10: What's the biggest thing that can

prevent you from receiving healing?

A10: If you lack faith- if you don't believe that Jesus can heal you, you won't be healed.

R10: Luke 6:2-5

Luke 6:2-5 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. They said, "Where did this man get all these things? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands! This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him. Jesus was telling them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own home." He couldn't perform a miracle there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

Q11:

What other things can prevent people from being healed?

Q11: What other things can prevent people from being healed?

A11: Healing is a benefit from a good and loving God who hates injustice. He withholds healing from those who don't believe in Him and those who insist on living sinful, selfish lives.

R11: Jeremiah 8:22-9:6

Jeremiah 8:22-9:6 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people? Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people. Oh, that I had in the desert a lodging place for travelers, so that I might leave my people and go away from them; for they are all adulterers, a crowd of unfaithful people. "They make ready their tongue like a bow, to shoot lies; it is not by truth that they triumph in the land. They go from one sin to another; they do not acknowledge me," declares the LORD. "Beware of your friends; do not trust your brothers. For every brother is a deceiver, and every friend a slanderer. Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. You live in the midst of deception; in their deceit they refuse to knowledge me," declares the LORD.

Q12:

What will happen if I continue to eat the Lord's Supper when I'm not repentant?

Q12: What will happen if I continue to

eat the Lord's Supper when I'm not repentant?

A12: It will make me sick, and that sickness may lead to death.

R12: I Corinthians 11:27-30

I Corinthians 11:27-30 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
