WHICH PROGRAMME IS RIGHTFOR ME?

International Foundation Programme (IFP) Foundation year

What is it? A year of academic study, with English languagesupport (p6).

A year of academic study prior to a particularundergraduate degree (p9).

Who is it for? International students who need to improve theirqualifications, skills or English language beforetaking an undergraduate degree (p6).

Students with acceptable English languageability but with school-leaving qualificationsbelow the acceptable level required (p5).

Why should Istudy it?

To gain entry to a range of undergraduatedegrees in the humanities, sciences andsocial sciences (p6).

To prepare you for the undergraduate degreeof your choice (p9).

Am I eligible? You are eligible if secondary education in yourcountry does not reach a high enough level fordirect entry onto UK degrees or if you haveacceptable academic qualifications but do notyet have a high enough standard of English (p8).

You are eligible if you have a minimum of twopasses at A level, or another recognised post-GCSE qualification, but not in the subject areaneeded for your chosen degree, or you did notobtain grades high enough for your chosendegree (p9).

• you have reached an academicstandard acceptable for first-yearentry to a degree programme,but do not have a high enoughstandard of English languageto cope with the demands ofa degree programme.

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATIONPROGRAMME

If you need to extendyour existing academicqualifications, study skillsor ability in English fordirect entry to university,you can apply for the one-year InternationalFoundation Programmeat the University of Kent.

The International FoundationProgramme (IFP) has beenspecifically designed to prepareinternational students for academicstudy on a wide range of ourundergraduate degree programmesin the humanities, sciences andsocial sciences, including pathwaysto Architecture, Biosciences,Business, Computer Science,Economics, Electronic Engineering,Law and Psychology.

The IFP at the University of Kentwas one of the first internationalfoundation programmes to beoffered by a British university andhas been in existence for over 20years. The IFP is delivered at theUniversity of Kent’s Canterburycampus.

Students on the IFP are fullmembers of the University withaccess to all our leisure, supportand study facilities on campus.We also offer you a place in ourpurpose-built studentaccommodation.

On successful completion of theIFP (and passing with a scorerequired for your subject area),you are guaranteed entry on to

What do I study? The IFP is a modular course overthree terms, starting in September.There is also a January entry pointfor students wishing to qualify to joinbusiness-related degrees.

All students take the modules ‘Skillsand Academic English’ and either‘English for Academic Study’ orcomplete a Project.

The Skills and Academic Englishclasses differ from ‘Englishlanguage’ classes as you will beworking to develop skills to fullyenjoy your academic experiencein the UK. These include, forexample, developing your senseof responsibility in seminar/groupwork and as an independentstudent, improving your skills in timemanagement, project managementand individual responsibilitytowards learning, and developingyour analytical and critical skills.

Teaching and assessmentOur IFP is taught by our ownacademics, with occasional visitingexperts, and this allows us to offerteaching of an exceptional quality.Teaching is organised in smallgroups and includes lectures,seminars, tutorials, workshops,IT training and independentlearning. Assessment is througha combination of exams andcoursework.

These subject-specificprogrammes are offeredas one-year, full-timecourses before you startStage 1 (the first yearof your degree course).These programmes areopen to all students.

If you don’t have qualifications inthe appropriate subjects for yourchosen degree, if your grades aren’thigh enough or if you are applyingfrom a country where secondaryeducation does not reach the levelrequired for direct entry to a UKdegree, you should apply for afoundation programme.

The courseThe foundation programmes followa common course structure.

ComputingThis module provides an introductionto programming, using Matlab,including applications tomathematics and electronics.

ElectronicsYou look at electronic circuits andsystems, measuring equipment andmethods, digital electronics, DC andAC circuits, and electromagneticsfor engineers.

MathematicsIn these modules, you study algebra,graphs, geometry, trigonometry,vectors, differential and integralcalculus and differential equations.

Practical workPractical work is a particularlyimportant part of the foundationyear. Laboratory experiments,including the construction of atransistor radio, complement thework you do in your lecture courses.

AssessmentAssessment is by coursework,laboratory work, tests and writtenexaminations at the end of the year.

Entry requirementsMinimum course specific entryrequirements: DDD in 3 A levels (orequivalent) in subjects acceptableto the School of Engineering, plusgrade C GCSE (or equivalent) inMathematics, Physics/Scienceand English. Candidates withinternational qualifications wouldbe considered on an individualbasis and should includesuccessful completion of nationalschool leaving qualifications withgood grades in mathematics andphysics/science.

FORENSIC SCIENCE

UCAS code F412Once you have successfullycompleted the foundation year inForensic Science, you can thenstudy one of the following degrees:• Forensic Science• Forensic Science with a Year inIndustry

• Chemistry (subject to approval).

Our Forensic Science degrees areaccredited by the Forensic ScienceSociety.

The courseDuring the foundation year, youstudy science subjects to thestandard required for degreestudy. The course is taught entirelyon the University’s Canterburycampus within the School ofPhysical Sciences and Schoolof Mathematics, Statistics andActuarial Science.

The course comprises lectures,practical laboratory classes andregular coursework assessments.It is carefully paced and includesrapid feedback on coursework sothat you can monitor your progressthroughout the year.

The University of Kent has runscience foundation years since1993. Since then, large numbersof students have achieved excellenthonours degrees and gone on tosuccessful scientific careers.

Algebra and ArithmeticBasic mathematical skills thatare useful for understandingthe precision and accuracy ofexperimental results and moregenerally forensic evidence.

Chemical Reactivity This module enables you to goon to the Stage 1 degree modulesFundamental Chemistry for PhysicalScientists and Bioscientists andIntroduction to Medicinal Chemistry,by introducing topics such as trendsin reactivity, reaction rates andorganic chemistry.

Graphs, Geometry andTrigonometry This module provides you with themathematical skills for: plottingexperimental data; trigonometry,which is required for understandingballistics later in your programme ofstudy; and vectors.

Molecules and Analysis This module includes topicssuch as titrations, spectroscopy,thermodynamics and equilibria,and provides you with the necessaryknowledge and skills to go on to theStage 1 modules Skills for ForensicScientists and Molecules, Matter andEnergy.

Properties of Matter Covering radioactivity, states ofmatter, properties of the elements,chromatography and an overviewof forensic science, this moduleprepares you for the Stage 1modules Introduction to ForensicScience; Molecules; Matter andEnergy; and Skills for ForensicScientists.

UCAS code G108Once you have successfullycompleted the foundation year inMathematics, you can then studyone of the following:• Actuarial Science*• Financial Mathematics• Mathematics• Mathematics and Accounting & Finance

• Mathematics and Statistics.

* If you wish to study ActuarialScience after your foundationyear, you should enrol in FinancialMathematics, which has the samemodules in Stage 1 as the ActuarialScience degree. After satisfactorilycompleting Stage 1, you will beeligible to transfer into the ActuarialScience degree for Stages 2 and 3.

It may also be possible for you to goon to one of the degrees offered byKent Business School or the rest ofthe University.

The courseThe foundation year is taught onthe Canterbury campus. We havedesigned our programme to provideyou with a basis for subsequentstages of your degree studies. Thecourse includes the modules listedon this page.

Introductory Mathematics In this module, you study arithmetic,algebra and trigonometry.

Calculus This module includes topics such asdifferential and integral calculus anddifferential equations.

Geometry You focus on graphs, the geometryof lines and circles and vectors.

StatisticsIn this module, you look at dataanalysis, probability and statisticalanalysis, including an introductionto statistical computing.

Additional Mathematics You study equations, complexnumbers, matrices, series, numbersand functions, limits and techniquesof mathematical reasoning.

Introduction to ProgrammingThis module introduces youto problem solving usingmicrocomputers and Matlabprogramming.

Mathematics Workshops These sessions review and extendtopics covered in other parts of thecourse. You work under supervision,to consolidate your understandingof course material and to improveyour problem-solving skills.

Entry requirements We consider all applicationsindividually, but normally ask forgood grades in GCSE Mathematicsand English (or their equivalent) inaddition to the general entryrequirements.

All foundation courses aretaught on the Universityof Kent’s main campus inCanterbury. The campusis built on 300 acres ofparkland, with modernbuildings surroundedby open green spaces,courtyards, gardensand woodland.

The campus is just 25 minutes’ walkfrom Canterbury city centre, which isone of Britain’s oldest cities. From theUniversity, there are wonderful viewsof the world-famous Cathedral andthe beautiful city and countrysidethat surround it.

Today, Kent has over 15,000 full-time and part-time studentsat the Canterbury campus.Kent’s student population is trulyinternational, with students from140 different countries.

The artsThe Gulbenkian Theatre is aprofessional performance spacewith capacity for 340 people,situated at the centre of campus.The theatre attracts many top artists,and performances range fromstand-up comedy to Shakespeare,classical concerts andcontemporary dance. Studentsalso have the opportunity to performor get involved behind the scenesin lighting, stage management,wardrobe and make-up, directingor front of house as an usher.

The Gulbenkian Cinema is a publiccinema in the Gulbenkian complex,open to students and the generalpublic. It is Kent’s only independentfilm theatre and screens newmainstream and non-mainstreamreleases, as well as archive andforeign language films not otherwiseavailable in the region.
