“We are entering a future where the need for innovation and new outcomes is crucial and where the challenges that we face are becoming more abstract and ever more complex. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town is a place where creative intelligence is unlocked, and where future-ready innovation leadership is developed.”

The HPI d-school at UCTInnovation through design-led thinking
In May 2016, the d-school team and the pioneering postgraduate students celebrated the successful completion of the first academic programme in design thinking held in the region.
On 18 May students in their multidisciplinary teams presented project solutions to industry and government project partners. This was followed with Friends and Family Day on 24 May at which student teams presented their projects to supervisors, friends and family members, and enjoyed a graduation ceremony.
These events brought to a close the first pilot Foundation Programme in Design Thinking of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town.
The programme ran over 10 weeks in the first semester, for two full days per week. Students came
from every faculty of the university and represented a wide variety of disciplines: from health sciences to IT, from engineering to humanities and social science, and from law to science. They learnt to work in multidisciplinary teams of four to six students; each team guided by a professional coach.
The teams worked on real world challenges provided by the d-school’s project partners from the corporate, public and start-up sectors.
Working on these projects, the students were taken through a programme of learning the tools and process of design thinking, towards ultimately developing a design thinking mindset.
The d-school’s Foundation Programme in Design Thinking teaches students a human-centred, collaborative

process for developing creative and innovative solutions to complex real world challenges. The d-school’s transdisciplinary, experiential learning programme is unique in this setting.
The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking at the University of Cape Town (d-school) is the only academic institution in the region which offers academic training and capacitation in design thinking to university scholars and professionals in the public and private sectors. The d-school was founded in Cape Town in August 2015 with funding, IP and academic support from Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner — co-founder of software company, SAP AG, and chairman of its Supervisory Board — and the Hasso Plattner Trust.
The establishment of the HPI Schools of Design Thinking at Stanford in the US, and at Potsdam in Germany,
brought academic rigour to design-led innovation practice, and made training programmes in design thinking available to academic scholars and leaders in the private and public sectors. The HPI d-school at the University of Cape Town is developing a context-responsive programme aimed to suit students and practitioners from South Africa and the African continent. Our semester-long programmes in design thinking take place twice a year, in the first and second semesters. Students who are registered at the University of Cape Town for Masters and PhD programmes are eligible to apply.
An Advanced Programme in Design Thinking will be launched in 2017 for students who have completed the Foundation Programme in Design Thinking.

— Team Pineapples
Team Members Kristen Abrahams (Health and Rehabilitation Sciences)Luet Buys (Architecture)Raushan Jeram (Economics)Shuhei Kato (Mechanical Engineering)Mehul Sangham (Information Systems / Innovation)
Project PartnerRent-My-Ride
Team ChallengeThe challenge was to understand peer-to-peer car rentals in the South African sharing economy, through an understanding of value-trust relationships. This resulted in the following research question: Using Rent-My-Ride as a platform, how might we enable participants to connect around shared values [culture of reciprocity] in a world where the current trust model is based on finance for accountability?
Team Proposal The team response was Inspire Learn Grow — a Rent-My-Ride platform to foster trust and development amongst car owners as part of the Rent-My-Ride business model.

Team ChallengeThe challenge was to re-imagine banking services in the future in the South African context.
Team ProposalThe team responded with Grow your Community Fund - Enabling communities to empower local entrepreneurs (who have no credit history) to access financial capital, how social capital can lead to financial capital.
Integral to this proposal was how social capital can lead to financial capital. A strong focus on the South African context produced an innovative solution.

Team ChallengeThe challenge was to redesign how transport nodes might catalyse economic development.
Team ProposalThe team response was “Open Plumstead” — a two-pronged approach to inform the TOD framework; The Plum Tree Network (PTN), and a toolkit of events/activities for the network to implement within the community.
This proposal aims to bring residents together to inform future developmental plans, and build social integration.
