the

foundation

annual report 2015

1998 was a year to remember – Google was launched,

Pat Rafter won the US Open, The Spice Girls split and

The Mirabel Foundation was created. Fast forward

17 years and The Spice Girls are once again back together

while Mirabel has helped over 3,000 Australian children.

mirabel is now 17...

This year, like the many before, has been packed with opportunities for children to meet others in their situation. Whether it’s a large camp or small therapeutic group, these events are designed to give children meaningful experiences, ultimately shaping their future with optimism and a connection to Mirabel and the community.

There are always the anticipated challenges; increased numbers of children, drug use devastating families and the challenge of raising sufficient income. Fortunately, the commitment of the Mirabel Board, team and many others provides extensive wisdom to draw upon through the variable social, economic and political climates.

Adjusting to change is imperative, both for Mirabel and the families. However, reflecting on our 17 years there is also much that hasn’t changed. Restoring a sense of hope and belonging to these children’s lives still underpins every Mirabel program. Replacing their traumatic childhoods with love, stability and opportunities to not only give them the childhood and future they deserve but also the resilience to break the cycle of addiction and disadvantage.

It’s always a highlight to see children who were once hurt, confused and frightened grow into confident adults full of hope and optimism. It’s the reason Mirabel exists. It’s what our incredible volunteers, supporters and donors make possible.

Today it’s hard to even imagine life without Google and for so many Mirabel young people, they can’t remember life without Mirabel. And we can’t imagine life without them.

Jane Rowe, Founder/CEO

Assessment and Crisis Support at Mirabel involves the

provision of tailored intervention at the earliest possible

moment in a child’s life. For some, this will be at birth,

but for others it will be much later when they move to

the care of their extended family.

When I first lived with Nan I’d hide

under the bed and refuse to talk when

people came over. I’m 17 now and

I talk so much that they made me

captain of our school debating team.

2014-15: 354 new children referred for intervention & crisis support

Total number of children receiving assistance grew by 27%

assessment & crisis support

These vital groups provide grandparents and relative carers with a

supportive network where they can talk openly about their feelings

and experiences. This year, the support has extended to a Facebook

group to keep carers regularly connected with one another which

has been particularly beneficial for those carers living in rural areas.

kinship carer support groups

When Felix was little I worried a lot

about his future and whether I’d be able

to cope. Now that he’s 17 I’m so proud

of how we got through it together and

everything he’s achieved.

2014-15: 185 kinship carers participated in peer support groups

A total of 53 groups were facilitated throughout the year

Mirabel’s Therapeutic Groups allow primary school aged

children to develop: essential social skills, supportive

friendships and ways to cope with their difficult past.

therapeutic groups

When I was younger I was always angry

and found it hard to make friends.

Now that I’m 17, I feel calmer and

have a group of friends that mean the

world to me.

2014-15: 140 kids regularly participated in therapeutic groups

A total of 103 groups were facilitated throughout Victoria

Mirabel’s Education Program assists young people

to develop confidence at school and improve their

academic outcomes. This is achieved through educational

assessments, tutoring, school advocacy, homework groups

and the provision of essential school resources.

education

When I was 10 I told my teacher

I’d probably be on the dole when I

grew up. Now I’ve just turned 17,

have almost finished school and have

submitted my university preferences.

2014-15: 169 children received educational support

A total of 27 homework groups were facilitated in Melbourne

Mirabel’s Recreation and Social Inclusion Program gives children

the chance to enjoy themselves while building relationships

with peers who share a common past. In addition to planned

events, 1011 tickets were distributed so that families could

attend concerts, movies and various sporting events.

When I was younger I was jealous of all

the exciting things other kids got to do.

Now that I’m 17 I’ve done heaps of

awesome things with Mirabel and don’t

feel like I missed out on much at all.

recreation & social inclusion2014-15: 749 kids attended Mirabel camps, outings & fun events

A total of 1011 event tickets were distributed to families

Mirabel House provides a safe, happy and familiar environment

for children while their carers have a break from the daily

demands of raising a young family. It is also the perfect place

for families to experience a holiday together when life’s

circumstances have prevented such simple luxuries.

When I was nine I stayed at Mirabel

House for the first time and cried when

we had to leave. Now that I’m 17 I have

so many great memories from all the

times we stayed there.

mirabel house & respite2014-15: 288 children and carers benefited from respite

500+ eggs were enjoyed at our Mirabel House Easter Eggstravaganza

Mirabel’s Youth Support Program assists young people (aged

13-17 years) to develop essential life skills and work towards

a positive future. This year, the program has been extended to

include weekly Young Teens Groups across Melbourne.

When I was 12 I started doing stupid

things and got myself into some

trouble. At 17 I now have the sense

to make smarter choices.

2014-15: 280 young people needed intensive youth support

24 group workshops & 3 camps were facilitated for young people

youth support

Mirabel’s Family Camps and Events give kinship families time

together to recharge and strengthen their relationships away from

the daily stresses that impact their lives. Kinship carers regularly

report that these events have been life changing for them.

When I was 10 we went to our first Mirabel

camp and I couldn’t believe that every

family there was like ours. Now that I’m 17

I realise there are thousands of kids like me

whose Mum or Dad died from drugs.

family camps & events2014-15: 629 children & carers attended our family camps & events

Lord Somers Camp and Mirabel hosted 2 family camps

Mirabel actively campaigns to reduce the stigma experienced

by Mirabel children and carers through increased understanding

and the development of community programs. Mirabel meets

regularly with individuals, businesses, governments and community

organisations to raise awareness of the Mirabel families.

advocacy & awareness2014-15: 4568 people connected with Mirabel via social media channels

Jane Rowe spoke at the Virgin Unite Leadership Gathering

When I was five I used to tell people my

Mum was run over by a train. Now that

I’m 17 I can tell the truth without feeling

like people will judge me or my Mum.

Mirabel’s volunteers donate their time and skills to help us

to achieve our mission. Without their generous commitment

we would not be able to assist the large number of children

that we do.

When I was 13 a Mirabel volunteer

made me feel that I mattered and it

changed my whole outlook. At 17 I now

enjoy helping the younger kids at school,

particularly those who are doing it tough.

2014-15: 230 volunteers donated their time to assist Mirabel

Mirabel welcomed 2 new members to our Board

Mirabel’s income comes from a diverse range of sources who,

through their generosity, contribute enormously in making a

difference to the lives of Mirabel children. Over the past year,

new relationships have been formed and existing relationships

strengthened through our commitment to a shared vision.

When Mirabel was established in 1998,

it grew at a rate that none of us expected

or anticipated. 17 years later, we have

supported over 5000 children and

kinship carers.

2014-15: Mirabel supported 1481 children & young people

financial support

Mirabel’s ability to provide services to children relies on

generous funding provided by various donors, foundations,

corporations and governments.

In the financial year 2014-15,

Mirabel’s income was

derived from the

following sources:

incomeMirabel’s income for the financial year 2014-15 totalled $2,367,618.

expensesMirabel’s expenses for the financial year 2014-15 totalled $2,267,597.

resultMirabel’s operating surplus for the financial year 2014-15 was $100,021.

our financesAn amazing effort by all at Mirabel in the 2014-15 financial year saw our revenues increase by 12%, while our expenses only increased by 5.5%. It is quite clearly getting more difficult to raise funds in today’s economic climate, and as such the costs involved in raising these funds increase – however through the incredible efforts of the Mirabel team, they have been able to provide an operating surplus for Mirabel of just over $100,000 for the financial year. A truly commendable result.

A total of 354 new children were welcomed into the Mirabel family, an increase of 27% on the previous year. Again, this number will increase next year, so it remains central to the role of the Mirabel Foundation to raise as much money as possible to ensure these children are cared for to assist them in restoring their sense of self-worth, belonging and hope for the future.

As the only organisation in Australia addressing the needs of children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental drug use, every donation and funding avenue is crucial to the support services we provide.

As a result of the mid year budget review in December last year, the Federal Government cut Mirabel’s future Commonwealth funding. This decision was completely unacceptable for the Mirabel Foundation, and through the resilience and commitment of many of our supporters and the entire team at Mirabel, the government thankfully reversed this decision in June, with Commonwealth funding restored to Mirabel for the next two years.

With the continued generosity of all our wonderful supporters, the dedication of the Mirabel staff and the guidance of the Board of Management, we will continue to strive to ensure no child is turned away from Mirabel, enabling us to continue to support the lives of so many children today, and in the future.
