To Our Valued Supporters:

In FY14, the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library continued its vision to support and enhance the services of the Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL). With the assistance of our generous benefactors, we were able to sustain our commitment to a superior public library system in Baltimore County where opportunities for literacy, reading enrichment and lifelong learning are available to all.

Over the past year, the Foundation once again provided robust funding for BCPL’s early childhood literacy projects. Providing the necessary funding for maintaining the infrastructure and learning resources of the two Storyville locations at BCPL’s Rosedale and Woodlawn branches continued to be a priority. With over 116,000 adults and children annually visiting these interactive early literacy learning centers, ongoing upkeep and maintenance is essential to keep these assets fresh and vibrant. The Foundation also played an integral role in supporting the My First Library Card program and the Summer Reading Club. With the kindness of our corporate partnerships and individual donors, we were able to reach over 57,000 students from birth to 13 years of age and provide the resources necessary to make these programs a success.

We are sincerely appreciative of all those who supported the Foundation throughout FY14, including our Taste of the Town event sponsors, attendees and in-kind donors. Taste of the Town is our annual fundraiser with over 300 in attendance enjoying samplings from 18 restaurants, live entertainment and a silent auction. This event raises over $100,000 annually to supplement our initiatives and provide funding for many of the programs within BCPL’s 19 branches.

As we embark on FY15, we are very happy to welcome BCPL’s new director Paula Miller. As we build a new strategic plan with a focus on community engagement, we are excited about the future of the Foundation as it continues to make a positive impact in the lives of BCPL customers. As a donor, you can be proud that you are helping to make a difference while assisting BCPL to be the place to help empower, inspire and inform residents of Baltimore County and beyond.

We look forward to another fulfilling year supporting an array of projects that encourage children and adults to cultivate a lifelong enthusiasm for reading and learning. I encourage you to continue to stand with us as we further advance efforts to keep BCPL on the cutting edge of library services nationwide.

Sincerely yours,

Jeffrey W. SmithBoard President

Storyville is an interactive early literacy learning center designed specifically for children ages birth to 5 and their caregivers. Located in the Rosedale and Woodlawn branches of the Baltimore County Public Library, Storyville was made possible by funds raised by the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library. The child-sized village includes developmentally appropriate books and activities for children ages birth to 5. The environments and activities in Storyville are specifically designed for caregivers to help their young children enter school ready to learn.

Read Rover supports BCPL’s mission to foster a lifelong love of reading in children. This is accomplished through monthly visits to licensed day care providers. Each month, Read Rover staff perform a story time and help providers to check out materials. The story time programs incorporate pre-reading skills which prepare the children for entering school. Also, our storytellers model successful techniques during the programs to teach day care providers important early literacy skills that they can then share with the children and their parents. Picture books, teacher resources, easy nonfiction, concept books, CDs, DVDs and storytelling materials are all available for checkout to further support this goal.

Major Initiatives and Programs of the Foundation for BCPL

Page 5: Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library AnnuAL RePoRt · to foster a lifelong love of reading in children. This is accomplished through monthly visits to licensed day care

My First Library Card is a program that provides library cards for children ages birth through kindergarten in all library branches, and through cooperation with various preschool programs and Baltimore County Public Schools.

Teen Programs at BCPL are designed to engage teens with their peers and library staff while providing a safe environment for learning and socializing. Programs range from educational – including writing workshops and tutoring sessions – to entertaining including open mic nights to video game contests.

Foundation for BCPL Endowment for Children’s Literacy was created in 2011 with a gift of $475,000 from the estate of former BCPL employee Margaret “Peggy” Peterson. This generous donation became the initial contribution to the endowment. Since 2011, the endowment has grown to $681,966 through investments and several other gifts including a $21,000 contribution from the estate of Suzanne Ford in FY14. After reaching the goal of $1,000,000, disbursements from this fund will go toward supporting and enhancing early childhood literacy projects at BCPL. In honor of Peggy Peterson, the Peterson Circle was founded to recognize those who have chosen to make a lasting commitment to the Foundation with a provision in their will or estate plan.

General Library Support allows us to meet the library needs as they arise. These donations give the library the flexibility to respond to emerging and innovative needs that were not identified prior to the county budget process or to special opportunities that arise after the budget year begins.
