India competed at the 2016 Sum-mer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil, from 7 to 18 September2016. Indian athletes have ap-peared in every edition of the Sum-mer Paralympic Games since1968.

A total of 19 players were sent fromIndia, 3 of them being women, toparticipate in 5 sports.

India has sent its largest ever del-egation in the history of summerParalympics. Also, as far as thegames have progressed till now, ithas been India's best ever per-formance in the history of the sum-mer Paralympic games with a totalof 4 medals won till now ( 2 Gold ,1 Silver and 1 Bronze ) with Deven-dra Jhajharia breaking the WorldRecord to win a gold medal at theParalympics.

The Prime Minister congratulatedthe efforts of the sportspersons, through tweets, as well as on hismonthly radio address, “Mann KiBaat”; as did many other Indiandignitaries and civilians. But some-where, the buzz was a little lessthan what it was for the Olympics2016.

This might be because prevalentnotions still treat persons with dis-ability as objects of pity. This obvi-ously needs to change in order forour society to be more egalitarian.India gets two Golds, somethingthat we could not manage in theRio Olympics this year. Even so,our paralympians are still to re-ceive due appreciation. Moreover,Deepa Malik won a silver, anachievement which further demol-ishes typical stereotypes about In-dian women, after achievementsby PV Sindhu and Sakshi Mallik atthe Rio Olympics.

Seeing the sports consciousnessamong Indians, other than on oc-casions of the Cricket Cups, was arare phenomenon this Olympics. Not appreciating the efforts at theParalympics will kill this seedling. All that is being asked to do is cel-ebrate one's victory. If Indians failto do this then they would be failingin keeping up the spirit of this na-tion, which is not something that itcan afford to do.

Dissecting Internet Culture

Goes the might trembling in itscourse when it tries hard to proveits word it cries! Dries its heart buta word from mouth is termed asguilt how can he speak like that tohis elders? Why is he shouting likethat , yelling murmuring the strongcage that locks your heart impend-ing courage goes sinking down thealley because logic and rationalegoes dark in the pall of protocolsand regulations if we are small inage and lost in our ways we aren'tthe carriers of opinion sparking thecacophony of delusion can wemark our existence through ourwords! Locked in the heavy burdenof escapism can we still come outconfident in front of the mighty wis-dom where wisdom stands as adubious person beneath the quali-fication stand dry without its exis-tence within them the hue takes up

the aura dryness kills the last dropsof water! The pressure driven forceof how to fall under the veil of syco-phants and just nod your heart de-spite having the powers of logicand rationale our morals are weakour wisdom sinks but are we stilldepleted with words our voicebeing faded with the delving lime ofrestriction drowning our spiritskilling us with myths and sinkingwith the poison of how things aremeant to be the clash of views thecontradictory possession are westill not allowed to clear our mindsand raise what our consciencestates us! Amidst the words thereis order, restriction , regulation withall being a burden for the buddingminds in the backdrop exists a pic-ture of the sunken youth facing thedrowning force of inequality

We can see a pattern every timean incident happens. A terrorist at-tack, a rape case or a certain polit-ically incorrect statement by apublic figure produces outrage ontwitter. People tweet expressingtheir disgust, sympathy and disap-proval. This behaviour is not limitedto ordinary citizens. People in thelimelight, in the upper echelons ofsociety also tweet to voice theiropinions. The recent terrorist attacks in Urievoked a similar response. ShahRukh Khan, Anupam Kher, ViratKohli and Ajay Devgn are few ofthe host of celebrities that ex-pressed their condolences usingthis medium. While the celebritieswere formal and restrained in theirtone, the general public had noqualms about expressing their feel-ings about the attacks. Most ofthem condemned Pakistan’s ac-tions and some suggested retalia-tory action. And few wereespecially explosive. But like I mentioned , there is al-ways a pattern. An incident occursthat grabs the headlines, hashtagsgalore, after a while the burningissue cools off, it begins to fade inpublic memory and another issuegrabs everyone’s eyeballs. Thepattern repeats again.Such instant reactions and the brit-tle nature of public memory havebecome a feature of internet cul-ture, and not a shining one. But ex-aggerated and inflammatoryresponses are only one facet of in-ternet culture. Another facet is theculture of trolls. II think since netizens have takento making hilarious memes out ofpractically everyone, even celebri-ties would be using their wordsvery carefully. A slip of tongue canget you trending on the internet fordays and sometimes months. And

if you think that I am making a bigdeal out of trolls here, just askRahul Gandhi. The Chota Bheemmemes probably pegged back hispolitical career by a couple ofdecades. While Trolls generally are in goodhumour and are received with awry smile or two, sometimes a cer-tain section finds it anything but hu-morous. A good example in thisregard is AIB stand up comedianTanmayBhat. In a YouTube videohe trolled Sachin Tendulkar andLata Mangeshkar. May be he wassimply being humorous. But the in-ternet janta was quick to take of-fence. What followed wasmassive outrage and peoplespewed venom online. At the sametime, few jumped to his defence.Again, there was a pattern – a lotof media hype and strong com-ments which fizzled out after awhile. So is it wrong to use the internetas a platform to express our opin-ions? The proponents of the samewould argue that it is too easy- typ-ing a few words on twitter andpressing that send button is almosta mockery of the intensity and im-pact of the incident. But at thesame time, one can argue thatsome response is better than noresponse at all. It is very tempting to censor the in-ternet- to place roadblocks on theway of free speech. But the inter-net is the greatest tool of this cen-tury. It’s a whole new media of itsown comprising everyone on theweb. And this free exchange ofideas is the very core and strengthof this platform. It is best for the in-ternet to remain a platform wherespeech is not censored. In fact, wecan follow a very simple logic here. The people will say and the peoplewill judge.

One nation, One tax-The GST bill Shalini SinghB.Sc. Chemistry(h)3rd Year

With the GST bill in the newsthese days most of us wonder, what it is all about, how will it ben-efit us? It was unanimously passedin parliament last month. So let’stake a look at what this bill is allabout. The full form of GST isGoods & Services Tax Bill. It is aremarkable change in India’s indi-rect tax collection. There are threecomponents of GST-Central GST(levied by central govt.), State GST(levied by state govt.) & IntegratedGST (levied by central govt. on in-terstate supply of goods & serv-ices).Central GST (CGST) and StateGST (SGST) would be paid to theaccounts of centre and state sepa-rately. Both are applicable to alltransactions of goods & servicesmade except the ones which areexempted. The exclusions includepetroleum products, alcohol bever-ages, diesel & tobacco. Why was GST required?India relied mainly on indirecttaxes, revenue from indirect taxeswas the major source of revenue. The major reason for indirect taxeswas that Indian population waspredominantly poor thus wideningbase of direct taxes had its ownlimitations. And also agricultural in-come was not subjected to income

tax. But then there was multiplicityof indirect taxes in country due todivision of fiscal power, and led toan extremely complex indirect taxstructure in the country. Hence, thesimplification can take placethrough a law like GST. Benefits of GST bill1. It subsumes the multipleindirect taxes for all the central &state level taxes. The list of taxes that are subsumedby GST-Central level tax: central exciseduty, additional excise duty, servicetax, countervailing duty & specialadditional duty of customs.State level tax: state VAT, enter-tainment tax, entry tax, purchasetax, luxury tax, taxes on lottery, bet-ting & gambling.2. Taxes on multiple manu-facturers are reduced.3. It taxes only final cus-tomers. Therefore, the cascadingof taxes is avoided & productioncosts are cut down.DisadvantagesThe tax on services can go from14-20% after its implementationand the tax on retail will almost getdoubled. Tax on imported goodswill be around 6%. Also there willbe control on every system by cen-tral &state govt.

Many think Feminism as a move-ment only for women, but NO.Feminism is a path to attain libertyfor both men & women against cer-tain oppresive notions & practicesin society.Feminism is a brilliant idea; but dis-torted views can create harm. Theperspective of feminism regardingwomen’s empowerment has beento evolve the soul of an individualbut not to create insecuritiesamong the men. Each one of us isunique and together we can bringa better change.Instead of debating whether to

bring up our daughters like oursons or vice versa; it would be wiseto nurture a human as a human.

Feminism is not about “My choiceor your choice”; rather it is not achoice but a necessity. Sexual ori-entation and the choice of attirecomes much later, there are moregrave issues to be resolved first.Such demands dilute the cause offeminism.

Feminism urges both men &women to fight for each other butnot against each other. It’s aboutequality and not competition.Feminists are not misandrists. There is no sex discrimination insoul so feminism advocates equal-ity and liberty for both men andwomen. Humanity is its doctrineand it believes in “Being Human”.

Imagine walking into the metro sta-tion, skipping over all the queues, tapping your phone on the metrocard reader, and the little screengreets you back, "Hello There!Have a happy journey!" You don'thave to worry about recharginganything because the tokenamount gets deducted from yourregistered bank account! Imagine not having to carry ticketsfor any air journey, just tap yourphone on the sensor and voila! Youhave your boarding pass. Imagine ringing up your bank andrequesting them to send you a fewdocuments, no fuss about name oraccount number or anything likethat, because the customer carewill see your Aadhar-encryptedphone number and will send yourdocuments to your own email id. Imagine sitting in your own com-fortable room, and attending yourpassport interview using an Ad-haar-encrypted skype call. Guess what, in a couple of years, you won't need to imagine thesethings.

Back in 2009, when the UniqueIdentification Authority of India wasset up and the Aadhar scheme waslaunched, maybe Nandan Nilekani, the then UIDAI Chairman himselfwouldn't have realised how much itwould change, well, everything, ina span of ten years. What was nothing more than an IDcard during the UPA regime hasnow, under the ambit of DigitalIndia, become an indispensablepart of our lives, and this is just thebeginning. After Jan Dhan Yojna, LPG sub-sidy, and 10- day passports, Aad-har linked smartphones isundoubtedly UIDAI's most ambi-tious project y--with more than 100crore Aadhar cards and 40 crore

smartphone users (and growing),this project makes perfect sense. UIDAI recently held high levelmeetings with tech giants likeGoogle, Samsung, Apple andhomegrown major Micromax, dis-cussing the vast uses of an Aadharencrypted chip in every smart-phone. While Samsung has al-ready started makingAadhar-friendly phones, Apple andGoogle have resisted, citing pri-vacy concerns. Their resistance islikely to be in vain, as the Govern-ment mulls the decision to makethe Aadhar microchip mandatory inall phones, like it has done with the"panic button", which must be in allphones starting 2017. Microsoft has already done sometest runs of Aadhar-encryptedSkype calls, which will verify theidentity of the caller and make suchcalls as valid as an appearance inperson. You could attend passportinterviews or even make a state-ment in court hearings, from thesafety and comfort of your ownhome. You might never need to fill a KYCform again, as you could give yourAadhar number and details likeName, phone, email and addresswill automatically be inserted intothe database. You could walk into an office, showyour phone at the reception, andwithout any hassle you could betold when and where exactly to go. Though privacy remains the majorconcern, UIDAI is confident of thecyber-security infrastructure theyhave in place. With a standardisedfingerprint reader and NFC in allsmartphones, and timely upgradesto the network architecture, there isno way Aadhar can't realise itsmammoth potential. The possibilities are endless.

What is one thing that is extraordinaryabout Hansraj College?

The Vision Society undertook an interview asking the freshers about the mostfascinating thing they feel about Hansraj.

The survey witnessed the active participation of many first year students withvaried views and opinions.

Here is what the newbies had to say:

5

She was a girl with a polite face. Now she's just in our hearts.

There was an intense softness in her gaze.I want to give her all my regards.

She seemed to hide her emotions, she wasa maze.

Her father is broken from inside. Her mother's tears have been dried.

It's altogether a painful ecstasy. Her brother is screaming helplessly.

Her father, being a man, doesn't shed tears.Hollow from inside, a smile is all that he

wears.

They all wish it were a nightmare. She left them all, not fair.

She won't be forgotten by them, never. She'll be alive in their hearts, forever and

ever and ever.

The days in the stadium were just awesome. The amalgamation of hard work andfun, was so different that I want to try such new things again and again. Thosesleepless nights and the food that we ate sharing with the large group, was so de-licious that I would do anything to have that experience again. In a nutshell, youcan’t get that experience just by reading; you get that only when you live it.Kushagra Tayal, the Founder of the Idea.

The memories created there will always remain close to my heart. Working in thecrane had its own perks. The night shifts were even better than the day shifts. Itwas fun sacrificing our sleep. Overall, the bonds that we have created and thememories we have made have a greater weightage for me.Anmol Agrawal

It was the best experience of my life’ would be an understatement, it was muchmore than just that. We, the team, used to eat, sleep, clean, drink, party, sing, dance together. It was non-stop exhaustion for 3 days. We learnt multitasking aswell as putting stickers, arranging cups, craftswork, publicity in campus and offcampus, and cleaning the mess in Stadium. This taught us time management. Weall worked with utmost dedication and sincerity.Vanshika Deswal

When Mr. Swapnil (UK Delegate) was about to announce the result, he wasspeaking in a grim, hard voice. He was saying that it is not an easy thing to at-tempt a record, one needs to follow all guidelines. But then he said, “This is thelargest plastic cup pyramid”, and we all danced like mad people. It was great, and I don't know how to express that feeling.Sagar

Those Days Were Probably the best days I had at Hansraj so far. Our team useto discuss ideas, put stickers on the cups, and do various other things to makethis record possible. I even had a night stay in the stadium and worked at night. All this helped me in creating strong bonds with some amazing College mates.Bhavyae

It was great! We used to work from morning to night , crack jokes in between, getto know each other a lot. So, it was cherishable experience.Himanshi

While we worked at the ‘Thyagraj Stadium’, there was always a fear in mind aboutwhat if the pyramid falls. We tried to check all sources of wind, movements andother factors too which could cause its fall. We had three complete sleeplessnights, full of anxiety but also with excitement.Saurabh

Those days were something that we will remember forever. We worked continu-ously for 66 hours. Our dream came true at 10.18 AM when Kushagra put the lastcup: 56,980th cup.Shuvam

The experience was amazing. I will remember it forever. Three sleepless nightsat the stadium, but no tiredness at all. Interaction with superb juniors was fun aswell.Abhishek

Those days in the stadium were full of fun. I used to reach there at 12:00 PM andreach home at 8 in the evening. The entire team used to work, eat and laugh to-gether. Many times the cups would fall but instead of getting disheartened, theteam kept working with utter faith and conviction that they would indeed make thelargest plastic cup pyramid in the world.Pooja

Those days in the stadium were full of fun and frolic along with a lot of hard work.I was the only girl who was actually in charge of making the pyramid. The seniorsreally helped and encouraged me. This experience would always remain veryclose to my heart.Tanshi

I will never forget and will cherish forever those days spent in the stadium.Sarthak

It was 70 percent fun, 20 percent exhausting, 10 percent thrilling. But it was diffi-cult. The journey was full of ups and downs, but that made it interesting!Neelesh

Those 3 days were the best experience ever. We used to stay there all night work-ing together, eating, chilling, enjoying everything together.Piyush

Those were some amazing days spent in the stadium which cannot be expressedin words. Our team bonded together very well. The memories are still there in thestadium.Lakshita

We spent around 3-4 days out there. We worked in shifts, all day and night last 3days were tedious but we had to complete our target. I got to know how team lead-ership can be practically applied in real life situations. The best part about this wasthat none of us lowered our morale inspite of this being such a big target.Sammi

It started a week before the event but the main work that is the placing of cupswas done three days before the event. Prior to that we used to have meetingsregarding things like design of t-shirts, getting campus ambassadors to promoteour event. We recorded stuff, made videos, and clicked pictures. After we weredone with work, we used to chill somewhere in the stadium. And, after partyfun was the best part.Pallavi

The days spent in the stadium were good. With the pyramid, we had 2 majorproblems, time constraints and we had a wooden plank as a base for the pyra-mid.After 4-5 hrs of work, we realised that as we stepped on it, it moved and thusshook our pyramid. We had to put each and every step so cautiously; our speedreduced tremendously. But in the end, we all worked it out pretty well. Karan

We spent about 8-9 days in the stadium. For the first 5 days, we just brought thecups and put tags on them, and then in the last 3 days, we made the pyramid. Wetook help of a crane. We did not face any major difficulties. It was really a proudmoment for everyone. We can now say that we have a record to our names. Ayush

We were like a family there. Kushagra led us, and second years formed the coreteam. We needed a crane for the job, and in the days to come, we even developeda bond with the crane operator.Harshit
