The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international movement which has spread from France since 1973. The original university concept has changed to one where the members themselves are the teachers. This model has been adopted in Australia since 1984.

The U3A Sunshine Coast and Brisbane were established in 1986. There are now over 30 U3As in Queensland with many thousands of members. Within our own Region we have U3As at Tambourine Mountain, Jimboomba and Boonah.

Sharon Redmond from CentaCare called a community meeting for 9 November 2010 to discover what we could do to establish a U3A in Beaudesert. The U3A Network Queensland threw their support behind the project and a large number of

The Origin of Beaudesert U3A

Chris is an active member of the Art Group. She submitted these notes so that we could all celebrate her success.

My name is Christine Purtle and I have loved art and all things creative since I was old enough to take notice. I use a variety of mediums including acrylic paint and inks as well as watercolour. I love playing with colour, the more vibrant the better.

I am part of a small group of fellow art enthusiasts who meet every Tuesday to paint and create and share our respective skills. I recently entered some of my work in the Quota art show and was very proud to be awarded first prize in category B.

The photo shows me with the winning painting which is acrylic on canvas.

community members and volunteers attended. On 23 November 2010 the first steering committee meeting was held

An Interim Committee was chosen in January 2011, model rules were adopted and steps were taken to become an incorporated organisation. As mentioned in other articles, we now have a formal Management Committee, we are incorporated, and classes are up and running!

We thank Sharon and her staff for the ongoing support of Centacare.

We look forward to continuous and close cooperation with our neighbouring U3As, The U3A Network Queensland, and U3A Online.

Come and join Chris and the rest of the Art Group on Tuesday Mornings at the Tennis Club!

Name Tags and Membership Cards: Name tags for all members have been prepared and will be available from Reception at Centacare. Membership cards are still in preparation.

Beaudesert Markets: Margaret, Hennie and Bernie promoted our U3A at the recent markets. We had a good reception from the seniors and we hope we pick up some new members. We had an enjoyable morning, accosting those who appeared to be in the right age bracket, and can recommend it to others who might like to come along next time. I think that we need to step up our publicity in general, so suggestions for suitable avenues are welcome. We will be going to Kooralbyn markets next month. There are still many other avenues to spread the word.

Newsletters for Those Without Email: Hard copies of this newsletter are available at Centacare Reception, so if you know someone without email, please let them know.

Featured Courses: Each month we will feature a course description (attached). This month it is my own pet course, 'Myths and Legends'. This is a prospective course and will be run if I can recruit at least 3 people. Let me know if you are interested in joining, [email protected], 5544 2042.
