PROGRAMS OFFERED:
FOSTER/KINSHIP CARE EDUCATION (FKCE) The FKCE Program provides quality education and support to caregivers in order to meet the educational, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of children and youth in out-of-home care. B, D, F, W-RATE IN-SERVICE (RENEWAL) English and Spanish classes/trainings for foster and kinship (relative) caregivers are offered throughout the year. ALL CLASSES are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. D and F-RATE PRE-SERVICE The 16-hour Pre-Service Certification trainings for D (emotional/behavioral difficulties) and F (medically fragile) Rates are available in English and Spanish throughout the year. WFFH PRE-SERVICE The 16-hour Pre-Service Certification training is also available. A WFFH home provides foster care and support for a minor parent and his/her independent child. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS(YESS-ILP) CALIFORNIA This program provides services, mentoring, and life-skills training to transitioning foster youth. YESS-CA aims to help current and former foster/probation youth transition successfully into self-sufficiency and adulthood. Classes and services are provided out in the community and on campus. STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH (CCC SMHP) -TRANSTION AGED FOSTER YOUTH (TAFY) PROJECT This project is designed to provide mental health and wellness training to current and former transitioning aged foster youth.

Frequently Asked Questions Do you provide childcare during classes/trainings? Can I bring children to the class? No, childcare is not available, *unless noted. Children are not permitted to attend classes/trainings.

What is the difference between the Pre-Service and the In-Service (Renewal) Classes? Pre-Service Training, is for first time certification ONLY and can not be used for certification renewal purposes. Renewal hours must be completed yearly to keep your certification current and hours vary depending on rate.

How many in-service (renewal) hours do I need to take yearly? Currently the yearly renewal hours for B-Rate and F-Rate are 12 hours. D-Rate requires 18 hours yearly and WFFH-Rate requires 4 hours yearly.

February 4 – The Importance of Documentation & Record Keeping (B, D, or F-Rate)
This class will review licensing regulations as well as chil-dren‟s personal rights and the importance of documentation and record keeping. This class will emphasize how to pre-vent allegations as well as the allegation process. Presenter – Karen Dixon
February 11 – Understanding the Teen Brain (B, D, or F-Rate)
Experts are exploring the recesses of the brain and finding explanations for why our teens behave the way they do. This class will give parents an overview of brain development dur-ing adolescence and will recognize signs of problematic con-ditions/issues and how to address them. Presenter – Lori Switanowski
February 18 – Take a Breath – Burnout Prevention (B, D, or
F-Rate) In this class caregivers will learn simple changes that can be applied in everyday life to reduce parental stress levels and avoid burnout. This class will focus on the importance of car-ing for oneself in order to care for others but also on being a positive role model for children. Presenter – Betsy Cisneros
February 25 – Promoting College & Higher Education Options (B or D-Rate)
It is never too early to start talking to your child about the im-portance of education and life after high school. In this class parents will identify the various higher educational options from certificate programs to degrees as well as activities/tools which they can utilize at home to assist their child in exploring careers by identifying their interests, skills, and talents. March 4 – Child Development: Stages Not Ages (B, D, or F-
Rate)
During this class participants will discuss child development theories and the normal stages/milestones that children expe-rience throughout their growth/development. Unfortunately, children who have experienced trauma, separation, or other crises can experience difficulty with various stages of devel-opment. Parents will identify tips and techniques for building their children's social, emotional, physical and intellectual skills as wells as how to address possible warning signs of concern. March 11 – Encouragement vs. Praise...What’s the Difference? (B, D, or F-Rate)
In this class parents will identify the differences between the-se two common practices. Parents will categorize specific examples/phrases of encouragement and praise. Common behaviors or outcomes exhibited by children to both of these will be compared. Presenter – Betsy Cisneros
March 18 – Managing ―Difficult Times‖ in the Home (B or D-Rate) When things do not go as planned or go “wrong” we may view this as dealing with a difficult time. This class will discuss what a difficult time may be as well as provide parents with the skills and planning tools to successfully manage and get through these situations. The importance of relationships, attitudes, values within the homes will be discussed as well as utilizing effective problem solving and communication skills and establishing responsibility will be highlighted. March 25 – Every day is a Learning Day for Children -Teachable Moments (B or D-Rate)
There are countless daily moments/activities providing excel-lent opportunities to help kids learn. This class will empha-size how to recognize and make the most of these positive learning experiences or “teachable moments”. Participants will identify and practice various examples of how parents can seize these moments enriching their child‟s lives with various lifelong skills as well as strengthening child parent relation-ships. April 1 – Care, Respect, & Love: Caring for LGBTQ Youth (B or D-Rate)
This class is designed to bring awareness to caregivers about the needs of LGTBQ youth and how to address them. Partici-pants will understand how to provide a safe and caring envi-ronment for all youth needing the same support and guidance as they develop. The AB458 law, which prohibits any type of discrimination based on sexual identity in out-of-home care, will also be discussed. Presenter – Calvin Wilcher
April 8 – Teamwork: Successfully Working with Social Services Professionals (B, D, or F-Rate) Teamwork and developing relationships with social workers and other professionals is key to ensuring the best outcomes for the child in your care. This class will provide caregivers with the tools and knowledge about everyone‟s role/responsibilities, and how to effectively communicate and work together as a team for the child. April 15 – Working Toward the Possibility of Reunifica-tion (B, D, or F-Rate)
This class will cover the importance of permanency for chil-dren in out-of-home care. The possibility of reunification and the process will be emphasized. Caregivers will identify how they can prepare the child/children for successful transitions while providing them stability. Presenter – Catherine Meurer
April 22 – Understanding the Most Common Mental Health Diagnosis in Foster Care (B, D, or F-Rate)
Parents will explore and analyze the various challenges that arise when caring for children with common mental helath diagnosis such as OCD, PTSD, Depression, Mood disorders, as well as adjustment & conduct issues. Parents will also de-velop effective strategies to deal with these disorders as well as available services and professional treatment will also be addressed. Presenter – Lori Switanowski

April 29 – Enabling vs. Empowering Our Children (B, D, or F-Rate)
In this class parents will recognize the definition of enabling and how this approach can negatively impact a child‟s behav-ior/growth even though the intent maybe to shield or protect them. Parents will also identify and practice statements and actions that will empower their growing children to take control of their own life, learn from their mistakes, accept con-sequences, and be held accountable. Presenter – Karen Dixon
May 6 – Bully or Being Bullied (B, D, or F-Rate)
This class will explore the types, effects, and signs of aggres-sive behavior and bullying. Participants will learn how to identify signs/traits that may indicate possibly being bullied or bullying. Parents will also understand the importance of im-mediate intervention as well as appropriate resources and prevention techniques. Presenter – Maribel Romero
May 13 – What Can I Do? Modifying Difficult Behaviors (B, D, or F-Rate)
In this class parents will identify what behavior, misbehavior, and positive discipline are and what they can do to modify difficult behaviors. Parents will identify and apply effective everyday tips and strategies that can address and transform their child‟s negative behaviors to positive ones. Parents will receive a workbook containing examples of these practical and effective solutions. Presenter – Betsy Cisneros
May 20 – Understanding the Court Process (B,D, or F-Rate)
This class will equip foster parents and relative caregivers with an overview of the court process as well as their role and participation in ensuring that the court makes the best possi-ble decisions about the child in care. Also covered will be the many issues that may arise during the placement process. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga

May 27 – Building a Successful Team: Working with Birthparents and Visitation Issues (B,D or W-Rate) Caregivers are instrumental in helping children in care main-tain connections with their biological families. As a caregiv-er, teamwork, and effective communication skills are essen-tial while working with birthparents. This class will equip caregivers with the knowledge and tools required to improve the safety, permanency and well-being of the child in care. The responsibilities of caregiver‟s as well as how to identify and address the various emotions or behaviors that a child may feel or have before, during and after the visits will also be addressed. June 3 – Sibling Rivalry (B, D, or W-Rate)
How does sibling rivalry affect children? This class will give caregivers tips on how to redirect siblings who do not get along. Parents will also learn techniques on how to assist children in resolving conflicts and how to manage their feel-ings. Presenter – Mary Hibbard
June 10 – Say What? How to Communicate with Youth (B or D- Rate)
This class will equip caregivers with tips on how to have bet-ter communication with teens. Bridging the communication gap between teens and parents can be difficult but this class will discuss how good listening, respect and patience can build healthy communication skills . Presenter – TBA
June 17 – A Sense of Belonging - Gangs 101 (B or D- Rate) Why does belonging to a gang have such an appeal on fos-ter youth? This class will discuss the need for belonging and why some youth may turn to gangs. Myths associated with gang affiliations will also be revealed. Parents will also learn ways of engaging youth in positive and productive activities. Presenter – Joseph Walker
June 24 – Great Summer Resources (B or D-Rate) This class will provide participants with available educational resources as well as recreational and fun activities for chil-dren and families to enjoy during the summer. A multitude of bargain hunting resources that will help you stretch your dollars will also be covered. Handouts on ideas and re-sources will be given. Presenter – Catherine Meurer

February 13 – My New Family/Home (B, D or F-Rate) In this class caregivers will explore the feelings, thoughts, and emotions that children going into the system may feel. During this class caregivers will gain an understanding of what they can do to help their child cope with their feelings and discuss the importance of welcoming and introducing a child into their new home/family. March 13 - Understanding Anxiety Disorders (B or D-Rate) This class will cover what Anxiety Disorders are as well as the causes, signs/symptoms, diagnosis as well as treatment. Generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, panic, and post-traumatic stress disorders will be discussed. Caregivers will also identify ways to assist children/youth with day to day anx-iety. Presenter – Christina Auer-Arriaga April 10 – About Foster Youth Substance Abuse & Risky Behaviors (B, D, or F-Rate)
This class will explore the issue of substance abuse and risky behavior among teens including drugs, alcohol, sex, and other new trends. Caregivers will also identify possible warning signs and behaviors that may be related to those activities as well as ways to prevent teen drug use. Parents will receive resources as well as a parent‟s guide for reference. Presenter – Karen Dixon
May 8 – Healing Parents: Building Trust & Love (B,D, or F-Rate)
This class will emphasize on the value of loving & supportive
relationships when it comes to helping children learn to trust.
In this class caregivers will develop practical ways of develop-
ing a child‟s positive beliefs and establish trust by emphasiz-
ing on respect, providing appropriate limits, consistent struc-
ture, and positive role modeling.

March 19 – Bullying: What Every Parent Must Know (B or D-Rate)
What are the signs and symptoms of bullying? How can you tell if your child is being bullied, or is a bully? We will take a look at these issues plus the various forms/types of bullying. Parents will be able to identify the symptoms of being bullied, articulate the importance of intervention and what they can do. Presenter – Lori Switanowski
April 16 – How Family Violence Affects Children (B, D or F-
Rate)
This class will explore the emotional and behavioral problems that children with a history of domestic violence face . Partici-pants will gain awareness of children‟s emotions and identify how domestic violence impacts their lives. Presenter – Hector de Paz
May 21 – ADHD and the Young Child (B, D, F-Rate) This class will help parents understand what ADHD is, the symptoms, and the daily challenges children face. Partici-pants will have the ability to identify the symptoms of ADHD as well as appropriate management techniques for children at home and at school. Presenter – Maribel Romero

19 de Marzo - El Acoso/Intimidación: Lo que Todo Padre debe Saber (Tarifa B o D) ¿Cuáles son los signos y síntomas de la intimidación? Có-mo puede saber si su hijo está siendo intimidado, o si el/ella esta intimidando a otros? Vamos a explorar estas preguntas y las varias formas / tipos de acoso/intimidación. Los padres identificaran los síntomas de la intimidación, articular la im-portancia de la intervención y lo que pueden hacer.
16 de Abril - ¿Cómo la Violencia Familiar Afecta los Ni-ños? (Tarifa B o D) Esta clase explorara las problemas emocionales y de com-portamiento que enfrentan los niños con un historia de vio-lencia doméstica. Los participantes serán conscientes sobre las emociones de los niños y identificaran cómo la violencia doméstica impacta la vida de los niños.
21 de Mayo - TDAH en Niños (Tarifa B, D, o F)
Esta clase ayudará a los padres a entender lo que el tras-torno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) es , los síntomas, y los desafíos que enfrentan los niños diarios. Los participantes identificaran los síntomas del TDAH , así como técnicas de gestión apropiadas para los niños en el hogar y en la escuela.

February 12 – Culture and Food: How Does the World Eat? (B, D, F-Rate) Our children come to us from a melting pot of cultures and countries of origin. Join us as we explore the diversity of healthy „world‟ food. Class discussion will explore how you, the caregiver, use food culture to explore diversity issues .
March 12 - Understanding the Differences Between Food Allergies and Intolerances (B, D, F-Rate)
Do your children have to avoid certain foods because they get an allergic reaction? Do they have problems digesting certain foods? Join us as we explore the differences be-tween food allergies and food intolerances. Parents will iden-tify the symptoms to look out for and how to prepare meals that will not interfere with their allergies or intolerances.
April 9 – Nutritional Connections Between the Food We Eat & Building Healthy Bodies (B, D, F-Rate)
As parents we know that usually good food = happy kids. In this class we will explore how our children‟s food can taste good and be good for them. Parents will learn about food presentation; how to sneak nutritious food elements into meal preparation; and how to engage our children in ex-panding their food likes and dislikes.
May 14 – Winning Ways with Children at the Table, Eat-ing Out, or Just on the Go (B, D, F-Rate)
Sometimes eating away from home can be stressful for you and your children. Join us to learn parenting tips that will help relieve some of the stressors and help you become more prepared for each situation.

3 de Mayo - Entendiendo las Opciones de Permanencia y Planificación Concurrente y Trabajando con la Posibi-lidad de la Reunificación (Tarifa B, D, o F) Esta clase cubriera la importancia de mantener permanen-cia y sobre el mejor interés del niños en cuidado fuera de casa. Los participantes identificaran las diferente opciones y diferencias entre largo plazo de Cuidado, Cuidado Fami-liar, Guardián Legal y Adopción. La posibilidad de la reunifi-cación con los padres biológicos también será discutida jun-to con las formas en que los cuidadores pueden preparar al niño para esta posibilidad.

Student Mental Health (SMHP) Transition Age Foster Youth (TAFY) Project This project is designed to provide mental health and wellness training to current and former transitioning aged youth in foster care with a focus on current Rio Hondo College students.

Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success (Independent Living Program) YESS-ILP
This program provides services, mentoring, and life-skills training to transitioning foster youth ages 16-21. YESS-California aims to help current and former foster youth transition successfully into self-sufficiency and adulthood. Workshops and services are provided to youth on campus attending Rio Hondo as well as youth out in the community.
