In 2014, YUVA Healthcare Skilling Private Limited and Partners International entered

into a collaborative agreement to grow, educate and train the healthcare workforce

throughout India. As part of this collaboration, Partners International will assist YUVA

in designing nursing education programs, pedagogical principles, overall course

structure, evaluation methodology and certification.

Globally, there is a critical shortage of skilled nurses. In many regions around the world, nurses

enter the workforce with varying levels of education, skills and training resulting in an entry-

level nurse workforce that critically needs standardization of their fundamental competencies.

Additionally, as patient care acuity increases and the complexity of healthcare and technology

grows, the need for more specialized skills also increases. Realizing these challenges in India,

YUVA Healthcare strives to make learning a life-long process and seeks to engage nurses and

allied health professionals in active learning experiences that enable them to be self-directed

learners. YUVA seeks to:

• Elevate the quality of healthcare delivery by providing requisites skills to nurses and allied

health professionals in India

• Implement innovative education models in simulation that assist students in translating

learning from the lab to a variety of clinical settings

• Grow a multi-location model in India for advanced education and training and workforce

development for healthcare professionals

Our process

In collaboration with the Institute for Patient Care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH),

the Partners/YUVA team has focused on specific education and training initiatives including:

• Reviewing facility and equipment for best practice and the Indian environment in

simulation and skills labs, including a mock operating room (OR), intensive care unit (ICU),

and nursing unit

• Developing an Advanced Nursing Foundations Course aimed at fostering a nurse’s ability

to bridge the skills gap between nursing school and clinical practice

• Creating a Critical Care Nursing Course after assessing needs and conducting a pilot

program in December 2014

• Developing a customized faculty development video conferencing series in teaching and

learning principles for simulation

Impact

• Pilot of the Critical Care Nursing Essential Skills course showed improvement from pre to

post-test across all three areas – 40 percent increase (Knowledge), 70 percent increase

in application (CPR) and 50 percent increase in various nursing skills and procedures

• 100 percent of participants agreed the module helped them professionally and would

recommend the course to their peers

• Since the course can be scaled across multiple groups and locations the goal is for a longer

term impact of improving critical skills for nursing in providing safe, high quality patient

care across India
