BEING THANKFUL
What are you thankful for? Something spectacular or just the sim-ple things? I hope it’s the simple things, because the spectacular ones only come around once in a blue moon, and if you’re only looking for one of those, you’re going to miss a lot along the way.
Now I want to assure you that country artist, Thomas Rhett, is not paying me to promote his music. It’s just that he writes so many beautiful, faith-filled songs that get stuck in your mind and heart and make you want to sing them and share them. His latest isn’t available yet on YouTube, nor can I find all the words anywhere ex-cept to listen to them on the radio, and I don’t even know if the title is what it seems to be: Livin’. But it’s a song about the simple things we can so easily take for granted—a sunrise, a blue sky, a person we love, “a tree I’ve seen a thousand times”, a “beautiful world sometimes I don’t see so clear.” The first couple of times, the refrain acknowledges struggle: “Some days you’re just breathing, just try-ing to break even… sometimes you’re just broken with all you’ve been given.” But then the last time around, it becomes: “You’ve got a heart full of grateful for all you’ve been given.” Indeed!
It’s the little things, the ordinary moments of daily life, the bless-ings we might take for granted, that should touch our hearts each day and invite us to be grateful for all we’ve been given. May this Thanksgiving open our hearts and eyes to all those simple gifts, those undeserved blessing that sometimes we might not “see so clear.”

This coming Saturday, November 30th, is
the next time when MFF will gather again
in St Joe's Burke Center beginning at

Advent Sunday and listen to others share
their thoughts on it; and in turn share
ours as we are inspired. The Burke Cen-

Fr. Bob and I are pleased to provide an hour of respite, prayer and solid

For Your Information WILL A NEW DRUG OFFER HOPE FOR ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS? By: Brigid Sweeney
Despite unprecedented levels of public and private funding for Alzheimer’s research,
success in developing new therapies has proven elusive. The sense of urgency around
discovering effective treatments continues to increase given the grim statistics: About
5.8 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s today, a number expected to rise to nearly
14 million by 2050, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
A string of drug development disappointments makes recent, surprising news from
drug maker Biogen all the more striking. In March, Biogen said it was adding its drug
aducanumab to a list of failed Alzheimer’s treatments and would halt two studies after preliminary analyses
suggested the trials would not meet effectiveness goals. However, Biogen surprised the medical and phar-
maceutical communities in October by resurrecting aducanumab after additional data suggested the drug
may successfully fight plaque buildup in the brain that characterizes Alzheimer’s, as well as slow the rate of
patients’ cognitive and functional decline. Biogen announced it will apply for drug approval by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) sometime in 2020.
Nearly 3,300 patients enrolled in two Phase 3 studies of aducanumab—including 10 at the Advocate Mem-
ory Center in Park Ridge, Ill., under the guidance of behavioral neurologist Dr. Darren Gitelman.
―Of course, the announcement is very exciting, in that it has potential to be the first disease-modifying drug
ever approved for Alzheimer’s,‖ Dr. Gitelman says. ―Other drugs commonly used today—such as donepezil,
galantamine, rivastigmine and memantine—treat only the disease’s symptoms, but do not change the rate
of decline.‖
Beyond bringing a bit of hope to the millions of families affected by Alzheimer’s, aducanumab’s FDA consid-
eration also marks another, more fundamental victory in the fight to cure the disease, according to Dr.
Gitelman. ―A positive study result tends to validate the predominant theory of how Alzheimer’s begins and
progresses,‖ he explains. Called the amyloid hypothesis, this theory holds that the accumulation of a pro-
tein called beta-amyloid is an important early step in the process that leads to Alzheimer’s disease.
Aducanumab is an antibody that binds to certain forms of beta-amyloid, prompting its removal from the
brain. The removal may interrupt the cascade of changes that causes Alzheimer’s.
―Nevertheless, caution is in order in interpreting the results, as the findings were not fully consistent across
both studies,‖ Dr. Gitelman says.
While participants taking a high dose of aducanumab in one Biogen trial showed a 23% reduction in clinical
cognitive decline and underwent brain scans that demonstrated reductions in beta-amyloid, the second
trial did not produce the same results.
Biogen attributes the divergent results to some patients’ greater exposure to a higher dose of aducanumab
in the first study. Researchers will learn more about the results, which continue to be analyzed, at the Clini-
cal Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease conference slated for early December in San Diego. The FDA will ultimately
decide whether the drug has potential to help patients.
Dr. Gitelman points out that even if approved, aducanumab will not cure Alzheimer’s disease. ―Participants
taking the highest dose of the drug showed a slowing of their cognitive decline, but not a reversal of their
deficits,‖ he says. ―Right now, we don’t know if aducanumab will receive FDA approval, and a lot of issues
remain. Nonetheless, the potential for a new drug that reduces clinical decline in Alzheimer’s patients is
truly exciting.‖ Health eNews, November 12, 2019

Ladies, do holiday preparations have you going a little crazy? It’s hard to find time for a little quiet amidst all the to do as we get ready for Christmas. But we know
that truly taking the time during Advent to breathe and prepare our hearts is so important – and can make all the difference in a Christmas that we truly celebrate versus one we just get through. Whether this is an annual part of your Advent season or this will be your first time attending, we look forward to
this time together.
Please join us in celebrating the start of the Advent season with dinner, drinks, and dialogue. You do not have to be a member of St. Joe’s to attend.
Each group would be responsible for their own dinner and drinks for up to 8 guests, table decor, and a cen-terpiece that should include a candle or candles. Peo-ple without a group are welcome as well, just bring a
snack and drink to share.

Gospel Lk 23:35-43
The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, "He saved others, let him save him-
self if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at
him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King
of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read,
"This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there re-
viled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The
other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for
you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been con-
demned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but
this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you,
today you will be with me in Paradise."
