The UNESCO grants the distinction of “World Heritage” to those places and sites with exceptional value features that make them unique in the world. For Spain, as third country on the World Heritage List with 47 ins-criptions, this Forum plays an important role and highlights the extraor-dinary value of our cultural heritage.

In 2018, coinciding with the celebration of the European Year of Cultu-ral Heritage, the 15 Spanish cities inscribed on the honoured UNESCO List commemorate the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Spain’s World Heritage Cities Group, a non-profit association recently declared of “Public Interest”, whose objective is to collaborate for the protection, conservation and promotion of their significant historical and cultural he-ritage, which is recognized worldwide and enriches and reinforces the brand image of Spain. The 15 member cities of the network are Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Baeza, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza / Eivissa, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de la Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Sego-via, Tarragona, Toledo and Úbeda.

One of the most important events within the programme elaborated to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Group, is the organization of a Forum with the title “European World Heritage Cities in the 21st century: cha-llenges and opportunities”, which will take place on 15th and 16th Novem-ber in Cuenca.

The objective of this Forum, facilitated by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports, is to create a space for reflection and debate in which the po-litical and technical actors in charge of the management of the European municipalities, whose historical sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List, can share concerns and good practices, as well as seek solutions to common shared problems.

The format of the Forum has been designed as a series of panels that will deal with different aspects of the management of the Heritage Cities, as a result of the experience that the Spain’s World Heritage Cities Group has been acquired in the last 25 years: i.e. Accessibility, Sustainable Tourism, Smart Cities, Security of people and historical sites, Heritage Manage-ment, Civic Engagement and Management of Public Utilities.

The Forum will be complemented with a panel dedicated to the experien-ces in Latin America and with the interventions of several mayors of Eu-ropean cities, whose conclusions , as a manifesto, will be the contribution of Spain, through its Heritage Cities and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, to the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
