drainage system. Concrete road in Pune has definitely provided the better road however invited the problems. Earlier the road is to serve as drainage for storm water from society. Now with concrete road the situation is different because level of concrete road is above the ground level of society. Most of natural drainages are altered, vanished or encroached. The change land use pattern has increased the run off rate. This together is leading to catastrophic condition.

Urbanize population has gone up from 11% in 1950 to 33% in 2014. It will likely to go up. There is urgent need to think about Storm water management as a part of Town planning and development. This is also the critical parameter to make the city Smart.

There are 26 Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra & 433 munic ipal i t ies in Maharashtra. Workshop on Challenges due to Change in Land use & Rain Fall Pattern for Storm water Collection Treatment & Disposal is for Sustainable Urban Development to all Municipal Corporations & Municipalities of Maharashtra. Workshop will discuss all the important aspects of Storm water management. The Workshop is aim to show the approach to the delegate & provide the tools to deal the problem. The delegates will definitely get equipped with the followings aspects of Storm Water Management.

1. Understanding the need of storm water management .

2. Approach & Guidelines to deal the problem with specific site conditions.

3. Realizing the impact of change in land use pattern due to urban sprawl.

4. Assessment of pollution due to storm water & its Treatment.

5. Concept of sustainable urban drainage systems.

6. Interpretation of Rain fall data for storm water design

7. Integration of storm water for wetland development.

8. Integration of storm water & rain water harvesting.

9. SOP for operation & maintenance of storm water drainage.

10. Public involvement & participation.

Theme

Urban storm water is mainly rainfall that runs off roofs, roads, footpaths and car parks. Rainfall run-off also occurs from gardens, parks and other open space areas in larger storms. Storm water has been traditionally collected by storm water drains and transported through pipes and channels to creeks, rivers, the harbour and ocean. There are three principal ways to dispose of rainwater from roofs, courtyards and paved areas: storm water sewers, soak ways and collection in storage tanks. Storm water sewers, which may in some cases consist of open channels, are more common in urban or densely built-up areas, and they normally serve to take the drainage from highways as well as from buildings. In the earlier days people used to design a combined sewerage system or a combined sewer is a sewer which carries storm water as well as sanitary wastewater.

The urbanization is taking place at the fastest rate so the land use pattern is geting changed. Natural drainage system is altered due changed land used. The natural drainage is also being used as dumping site during non-rainy days. Rain water gushes directly because natural obstructions and percolation are drastically reduced in urbanized area. Despite of the best efforts by the local authority chaos takes place in the beginning of rainy season. Flood like situation in Mumbai is becoming a common phenomenon. The statistic shows that the rain fall pattern is not changed much. However it is definite that the rain fall may remain same but the duration of rain fall is becoming shorter. The excess rain fall is always become excuse for failure of storm water

Full Day Workshop on “Challenges due to Change in Land use & Rain Fall Pattern for Storm Water Collection Treatment & Disposal” to be held on Friday, 09.10.2015 at Haji Ali, Mumbai.

The Inst i tu t ion of Engineers ( India) ,Maharashtra State Centre in association with Urban Development Department, Govt. of Maharashtra is organising the above workshop.
