Goal  of  the  lab  class

•  hands-‐on  experience  with  complex  experiments

•  data  analysis

•  data  interpreta2on

•  scien2fic  report  wri2ng

Every  student  is  supposed  to              complete  4  experiments  within  one  semester

Page 3: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

What  kind  of  experiments                        do  we  offer?  I.  Regular  experiments:    Ø  General  Physics  (see  Physics  I-‐III)  Ø Nuclear-‐  and  Par2cle  Physics  Ø Op2cs  (Quantum  Electronics)  Ø  Solid  State  Physics  Ø  Astrophysics

II.  Advanced  Student  Labs  (ASLs):    Ø  Experiments  close  to  research  in  a  research  group  Ø  Sign-‐up  and  work  as  a  team  of  1–4  students  Ø  Some  ASLs  count  as  two  regular  experiments

Page 4: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

Advanced  Student  Labs  (ASLs)  Solid-‐State  Physics  •  Prepare  a  semiconductor  structure  in  a

clean-‐room  using  photolithography  techiques

•  Op2on:  measure  the  quantum  Hall  effect  on  your  structure

ParBcle  Physics  •  develop  a  novel  tracking  detector  using

scin2lla2ng  fibres  •  study  cosmic  rays,  detect  muons,  ...

Page 5: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

Advanced  Student  Labs  (ASLs)  Astronomy  •  Observe  and  take  pictures  of  planets,

galaxies,  ...  •  Measure  proper2es  of  back-‐sca+ered

light

Quantum  OpBcs

•  Quantum  dots  as  single  photon  sources

•  Hanbury-‐Brown-‐Twiss  experiment

•  Atom-‐Photon  interac2on

•  Entangled  Photons  •  Mach-‐Zehnder  Interferometer

Procedures  Step  I:  Sign  up  for  an  exeriment  Ø Mon  9.30  –  10.30,  HPP  H12  Ø Wed  9.30  –  10.30,  HPP  H12  (new)    Step  II:  Perform  experiment  Ø  typically  within  3  weeks    Step  III:  Return  experiment  (HPP  H12)  Ø  (electronic)  signature  "measurement

finished"  from  assistant  required

Step  IV:  Write  report  Ø  hand  in  report  to  assistant  Ø make  correc2ons  required  by  assistant  Ø  (electronic)  signature  "report  handed

in"  from  assistant

Step  V:  Hand  in  report  to  Profs

Working  as  a  team

You  can  work  on  selected  experiments  as  a  team,  but:

Ø  Each  student  performs  an  independent  data  analysis

Ø  Each  student  writes  his/her  own  independent  report

Page 12: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

Star2ng  an  experiment

Ø  Carefully  read  the  instruc2on  manual  before  you

meet  the  assistant

Ø  Familiarize  yourself  with  safety  ma)ers  of  the

experiment

Ø  Consult  addi2onal  literature,  if  you  do  not  understand  everything  in  the  instruc2on  manual

Ø Meet  the  teaching  assistant  before  you  start  to  work

on  the  experiment

Page 13: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

Lab-‐book

Ø  Each  experiment  starts  with  a  lab-‐book  entry  of  its

2tle

Ø Use  the  lab-‐book  to  write  down  notes  about  the  experiment,  experimental  procedures,  es2mates,  ...

Ø  collect  the  assistant's  signatures  "measurement

finished"  and  "report  handed  in"  in  the  lab-‐book

Page 14: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

Rules:

Ø Measurements  should  be  finished  within  3  weeks

Ø  Reports  should  be  handed  in  not  later  than  3  weeks  ager  finishing  the  experiment

Ø  ALL  reports  have  to  be  handed  in  (to  the  assistant)  before

the  end  of  the  semester.

Ø  Incomplete  Experiments  expire  at  the  end  of  the  semester

Page 15: Fortgeschri+enes-Experimen2eren- Advanced-Physics-Lab-

If  problems  arise

Ø  Try  to  solve  experimental  problems  first  on  your  own

Ø  If  something  is  broken  and  you  cannot  repair  it  yourself:

contact  the  assistant

Ø  In  excep2onal  cases,  the  lab  technicians  will  help

Ø  Any  accidents  (even  the  smallest)  have  to  be  reported  to

the  Professors
