    Fort Wayne Area Parks: Allen County

    This is the fourth installment in afour-part seriesshowcasing the many parks found in Fort Wayne and Allen CounTodays focus is on parks that are a part of the Allen County Parks system.)

    Fox Island County Park

    Fox Island County Parkis the largest park in Allen County, featuring 605 acres. Of those acres, 270 are part of a StaNature Preserve, created to protect an area filled with unique plants, animals and geographic features. This park isknown for animal sightings, its natural marshland, seasonal ponds, sand dunes and wetland forest. Marked trails allovisitors to take in the splendor of this area. Grills, picnic areas, shelters and more are also on-site. Fox Island CountyPark is located at 7324 Yohne Road.

    Cooks Landing County Parkis a smaller but unique green space located near Cedar Creek, a state-designed sceniciver. Both canoe boats and fishing are available here. There is also an open shelter on site, picnic areas and woodla

    Cooks Landing County Park is located on the countys north side near the corner of Coldwater and Shoaff roads.

    Metea County Park

    Metea County Parkfeatures 250 acres of green space in the north central portion of the county near Leo-Cedarville.Among those acres is the Meno-aki State Nature Preserve. At this park, experience nature at its heart from hearinbirds sing, to the sound of chirping crickets. Amenities on site include five miles of trails, woodlands, wetlands, picnnd campfire areas, a lake with a swimming beach in the summer and more. Metea County Park is located at 8401

    Union Chapel Road.

    Payton County Parkfeatures a mix of open fields, woodlands, and wetlands. A feeling of solitude and quietness are

    ommon hear as visitors explore the rural countryside. This park also has several miles of hiking trails through 40 aof forest, field and wetland areas. Additional amenities on-site include a picnic shelter, small pond, picnic areas andgrills. Payton County Park is located at 13928 Dunton Road, on the countys far north side, between Hathaway and

    Gump roads.

    Fort WayneandAllen Countyare home to approximately 90 parks, encompassing more than 2,800 acres of land. Adozen of these are Legacy Parks, a term coined to signify a park that has been established for 100 years or more.     Tillman Park

    Tillman Parkcontains many popular amenities for visitors including the Stewart McMillen Tennis Center. This 70 agreen space located on the citys far south side was established in 1966 and also features baseball diamonds, a natur

    open space, picnic areas, a playground and easy access to the Rivergreenway paved trail system. Soccer fields are alvailable on site for childrens and adult leagues alike. Tillman Park is located at 600 Tillman Road and covers 70

    he St. Marys River. Additionally, pavilions, Foster Golf Course, playgrounds and a floral area fill this park. A replof Abraham Lincolns birth cabin is also on-site. Foster Park, which encompasses 255 acres, is located at 3900 Old Road.

    Weisser Park

    Weisser Parkhas a rich history, spanning more than 100 years and making it a Legacy Park. The land here was firstpurchased more than a century ago for about $10,000. Originally only 15 acres, the park later grew to 20 acres. On-svisitors can find baseball diamonds, basketball courts, picnic areas, a playground, recreation center, tennis courts andmore. Weisser Park is best known for the beauty it showcases in its natural wooded areas. Weisser Park is located at000 Hanna Street, in the heart of the citys south side.

    McMillen Parkwas founded in 1937 and once hosted the citys annual fireworks show and a gathering to dispose ofholiday evergreens. Today this unique area still features admirable amenities including ice skating, McMillen GolfCourse, soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and a ball diamondmaking it friendly to a variety of sports. In tummer, McMillen Park also is the home of one of the citys public pools. McMillen Park is located at 3900 Hessen

    Cassel Road, near the intersection at Oxford Street.

    Visit the beautiful rose garden at Lakeside Park

    Lakeside Park is one of a dozen legacy parks in Fort Waynefeaturing a history dating back more than a centuryFounded in 1908 and seated on nearly 24 acres, today this park features a beautiful rose garden. During the spring aummer, witness the many weddings at the gazebo in this park. Besides offering an opportunity to sit by the water anjoy nature, Lakeside also features basketball and tennis courts, a walking path, public fishing and in the winterkating. Visit this must see Fort Wayne park during your next visit.Lakeside Parkis located at 1401 Lake Avenue.

    Headwaters Parkis home to Fort Waynes many festivals, including portions of the annual Three Rivers Festival, outside those events this green space offers amenities to be enjoyed any time of the year. This 30-acre park features mple parking areas that allow easy access to the paved walking areas. There are also small plazas, several benches

    grassy areas. Headwaters Park also features the Hamilton Sculpture Garden and a fountain. This park is located at 3S. Clinton St., in downtown.Headwaters Parkhas sections on both the east and west sides of the roadway.

    Go back in time at Historic Old Fort Park

    Historic Old Fort Park is a separate area, but easily accessible from Headwaters Park that features unique landmarHere you can find a replica of the original fort structure manned under the command of Major Whistler, circa 1816.The replicated facility serves as a living history museum today. This area provides a great outlet for photos and childwill enjoy seeing a view of life in the 1800s.Old Fort Parkis located on Spy Run, just north of Superior Street indowntown.

    Freimann Square, also located downtown is a small, but unique, space. At just under five acres, this area features awater fountain and paved areas for walking and ledges and benches for sitting. Enjoy reading a book or eating yourunch at Freimann Square. There is also a statue of General Anthony Wayne here, and during the warmer months

    beautiful foliage surrounding the area.Freimann Squareis located at 200 E. Main St.

    Fort Wayne Area Parks: Northside

    This is the first installment in afour-part seriesshowcasing the many parks found in Fort Wayne and Allen County

    Todays focus is on city parks located in the northern portion of the city limits, and maintained and operated by the

    Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation.)

    ohnny Appleseed's grave, found at Johnny Appleseed Park.

    Johnny Appleseed Park features a unique green space, with a campground on one side, the riverbank on another, aportion of the Fort Wayne Rivergreenway trail in between. This park is named after the historic man of apple tree

    olklore, John Chapman, also know as Johnny Appleseed. The park is complete with a natural mound to commemorhis grave site. This park also features basketball courts, boating, sailing and fishing areas, picnic benches a playground more. The entrance toJohnny Appleseed Parkis on Harry Baals Drive, just off of Coliseum Boulevard.

    Salomon Farm Park embraces the feel of the farm, complete with a red barn and a windmill. The landmark farm wdonated by the late Chris Salomon. A learning center is on-site and a paved walking trail surrounds the park. Duringummer children can participate in the Salomon Farm Camp. Visit the park in the fall and winter for hiking and crosountry skiing or bird watch here anytime. Pets on leashes are welcome at this park. The Salomon family still uses tarmhouse, so park in the Learning Center lot.Salomon Farm Parkis located at 817 W. Dupont Road.

    Shoaff Park was founded following a 1955 land donation by Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Shoaff. This park features apavilion and the natural beauty of wooded areas. The park offers in total more amenities than any other city greenpace. Amenities include organized sports areas, boating, Shoaff Golf Course and driving range, disk golf, a

    playground, splashed and trails. Sports facilities are on-site for baseball, soccer, basketball and tennis. Three pavedoop trails are available for walking, running and more.Shoaff Parkis located at 6401 St. Joe Road.
