Lexington and Concord

Date- April 19th, 1775People-Lieutenant Colonel Smith, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Paul RevereDescription-It was the first battle of the war. Lieutenant Colonel Smith of Britain was sent to capture John Hancock and Samuel Adams, and take rebel military supplies stored in Concord. A small minuteman force was assembled but they couldn’t stop Smith's troops. The British troops moved onto Concord where a force of about 400 colonists forced the British to retreat to Boston. Outcome-The British retreated to Boston and tensions exploded between the Colonists and British. Significance- It was the first battle that started the Revolutionary War.

May 10, 1775The Battle of Fort Ticonderoga

- Fort Ticonderoga, New York- Col. Benedict Arnold , Col. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys

- Arnold, Allen and his Green Mountain Boys ambushed the Fort at dawn by surprise.

- The British commander of the Fort gave it up in surrender.

- The Fort was being used as storage for ammunition and weapons, and also had a strategic position of control over the waterways to Canada.

Battle of Bunker Hill

•On June 16, 1775, American troops headed towards Bunker Hill under the command of Artemas Ward. •Once the Americans think they have reached Bunker Hill, they realized that they were actually at Breeds Hill. •The British realized that they were threatening them.•American’s guns and cannons were pointed down on the British.•Great Britain rushed across Charles River and storming up the hill•By the 3rd wave sent, Great Britain has taken over Breeds Hill•It was a great stand by the Americans

Date: December 31st,1775

People: Guy Carrolton , Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery, George Washington

Washington decided to join the colonies in the rebellion in the 1770’s.

Battle of Quebec 1775! "Revolution was effected before the war commenced. – John Adams-

Arnold was to lead 1,100 soldiers from Massachusetts to Maine, then up the Kennebec and Dead Rivers into Canada by way of the Chaudière River to Quebec City, Generals Phillip Schuyler and Richard Montgomery was to invade from New York, take Montreal, then meet Colonel Arnold at Quebec. This was a defeat for the Americans!June 18th: Arnold was the last to withdraw from Canada. The Americans attempted again in 1778 and 1780 to conquer the British.

New York and Long Island 1776Revolutionary War Quote :. August 27th, 1776.Lord Charles Cornwallis, Sir Henry Clinton, Sir William Howe, George Washington, Israel Putnam, William Alexander.General Washington sent word out that General Howe was headed to New York. The Patriots in New York started to fortify the city. The New England units who had not gone to Canada with Benidict Arnold met General Washington's forces at Long Island between Brooklyn and New York City.. Combatants: British and the American Continental Army. The British drove the Americans from Brooklyn and forced them to evacuate New York.

Date: December 25th 1776

People: George Washington, Major General Nathanael Greene, and Major General John Sullivan

Description: George Washington decided to change the war by leading his troops across the partially frozen Delaware River to try and surprise the Hessians.

Outcome: When General Sullivan and General Washington met up after the Hessian colonel had been shot.. The Hessians surrendered shortly after.

Significance: This was a huge significance because the colonies were outnumbered and outmanned. Also the colonist took much needed supplies from the Hessians. Lastly, the colonist put their faith in George Washington was a good leader, and also faith in the army as well.

Battle of Ticonderoga 1777

Revolutionary War Quote : “I do not think you can do better than to fix here for a while, till you can become again Americanized” Thomas Jefferson

TEXT: Date: July 6, 1777People: General John Burgoyne commanded the British Army and General Arthur St. Clair commanded the American troops. Description: The Battle of Fort Ticonderoga was a battle of maneuver rather than a direct conflict. It was important to the Americans because they thought it would keep the British out of the northern colonies. During the battle, St. Clair had is troops retreat because he didn’t want any casualties of valuable troops. People were outraged but in the end St. Clair was may have been right. Outcome: The Americans withdrew, giving the British the upper hand. Significance: Ticonderoga ended up being abandoned and St. Clair could have been a hero if he stayed at fought.

Brandywine

Revolutionary War Quote :

The date was September 9 1777. It was the battle of Brandywine.

The Generals were Sir William Howe with 15,500 men, and George Washington with 14,600 men.

The British took Philadelphia.

British captain John Andre wrote in his journal “night and the fatigue the soldiers had undergone prevented any pursuit”.

At the end Washington had 1,000 killed worked and captured and the British had 93 killed, 488 wounded and 6 missing.

The Battle of Saratoga

• Was fought from October 7th 1777 to October 17th, 1777.

• “Gentleman Johnny” or John Burgoyne was the leader of the English army.

• Horatio Gates was the commander of the American forces.

• General Burgoyne started the attack. He ended up losing 86% of his original troops. He thought he had backup coming, but he was mistaken.

• The American forces won the battle. It caused the French to enter the war as an ally to the Americans.

• Saratoga was the major turning point of the Revolutionary war.

Battle Name: Valley Forge

Revolutionary War Quote :

December 1777, June 1778

German Hessians and Black, white and Indian Americans

Description- Valley Forge was a training period for the Continental army. They were trained by Baron von Steuben

Outcome- A stronger American army resulted from this

Significance- The American Army was better trained for the rest of the war. It ended up being the turning point of the war.

Conway's a snake, and you'll see him squirming on the griddle before we're through.

Siege of Savannah

Revolutionary War Quote :

Date: September 16th to October 18th, 1779

People: Americans/French (Maj. General Benjamin Lincoln, Vice Admiral Comte d’Estaing)

British (Brigadier General Augustine Prevost)

Description: The Americans planned to take the city of Savannah from the British. They first assaulted with French artillery and then made two charges while using a distraction.

Outcome: The distraction failed which made the charges pointless causing many American/French casualties.

Significance: It strengthened the push South for Britain and was a hit to the alliance of Americans/French.

Siege of Charleston

Revolutionary War Quote : “We must have black troops, and a limitless number of them too - paid and treated like their white brothers.” – Benjamin Lincoln

Date: March 29th – May 12th, 1780

People: American (Maj. General Benjamin Lincoln)

British (Lt. General Henry Clinton)

Description: The americans attempted a straightforward charge with only 5,500 soldiers against Britain’s 13,500 soldiers while they were holed up in Charlestown.

Outcome: British killed 100 soldiers and captured the rest as prisoners

Significance: This signified the great power of Britain, and caused heavy losses to America.

The Americans immediately occupied the empty redoubts. The Americans began formal siege operations on the eastern side of Yorktown. The Americans stormed two redoubts in front of their trenches and the position of the British in Yorktown became untenable. With no sign of Clinton’s relief and with inadequate supplies of artillery ammunition and food, on 19th October 1781 Cornwallis’ army marched out of Yorktown and surrendered.Outcome: The Americans winSignificance: This war showed the Americans that they were able to beat the British army.
