By Sgt. 1st Class Michael O’Brien 16th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment The annual Armed Forces Day Celebration at Biggs Park Saturday was a free chance for the El Paso community to learn about the military and have fun. This year’s celebration began with the 1st Armored Division Band per- forming a selection of patriotic music including “God Bless America,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” and the “Armed Services Medley.” The band also played the songs from the country’s five armed forces organizations and those who have served stood when the band played their branch’s song. Several thousand people saw military combat vehicles, a “Salute the Troops” car show, a William Beaumont Army Medical Center health fair and an El Paso Area High School Junior ROTC Exhibition Drill Team Competition. Those who attended said they learned about the Armed Forces. “I just moved to El Paso and this was a great way to see what Fort Bliss has going on,” said El Paso resident Alexander Chopski. Soldiers enjoyed schooling the public. “I love getting the chance to interact with the people who don’t normally get to see this stuff. I like to educate the kids about what not to touch be- cause a lot of this stuff is hazardous,” said Spc. Christopher Sarratori, team member, 741st Ordnance Company, 84th Ord. Battalion, 71st Ord. Group. President Harry Truman’s administration created Armed Forces Day in 1949 to establish a holiday for citizens to learn about the military and thank members for their service. The annual Armed Forces Day Celebration at Biggs Park Saturday was a free chance for the El Paso community to learn about the military and have fun.

This year’s celebration began with the 1st Armored Division Band per-forming a selection of patriotic music including “God Bless America,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” and the “Armed Services Medley.” The band also played the songs from the country’s five armed forces organizations and those who have served stood when the band played their branch’s song.

Several thousand people saw military combat vehicles, a “Salute the Troops” car show, a William Beaumont Army Medical Center health fair and an El Paso Area High School Junior ROTC Exhibition Drill Team Competition.

Those who attended said they learned about the Armed Forces. “I just moved to El Paso and this was a great way to see what Fort Bliss

has going on,” said El Paso resident Alexander Chopski. Soldiers enjoyed schooling the public. “I love getting the chance to interact with the people who don’t normally
