We have had a lot of success in sport this term with our basketball, rugby union, league, tennis and soccer teams, with students either winning their respective competitions or participating with enthusiasm and sportsmanship making our school proud. Congratulations to all students, parents and teachers involved. Our school is a Visible Learning School where students are given explicit learning intentions and success criteria to understand what they are learning, why they are learning it and what the end product should look like for each individual student. Staff are working hard at identifying collectively what a good learner looks like and what dispositions (Resilience, independence, effective communication, persistence, enquiring mind, collaborative abilities etc) effective learners require, so we can reinforce these skills to our students. It might be a great exercise for you at home to ask your child what a learning intention is and if they know what success criteria relates to? Each week our school focuses on Positive Behaviours for Learning. We have a section in our newsletter that identifies the skill we have worked on during the week so you can discuss at home with your children. We have a Positive Behaviour for Learning Team at Forster PS who create lessons, work at identifying areas we need to focus on, creating visuals to reinforce our themes and who coordinate the distribution of Hadley Awards and revise and support our Student Welfare Policy. At present we are collecting Hadley Awards as a whole school so that we can all be rewarded when the Hadley Awards fill our special container that is placed in the Infant and Primary COLA. We are still collating student preferences as to how we will celebrate when the container is full. Stay tuned! Kind regards, Annie Everingham Principal

Principal Report- Mrs Annie Everingham

Welcome to another busy week at Forster Public School. We have had a lot of success in sport this term with our basketball, rugby union, league, tennis and soccer teams, with students either winning their respective competitions or participating with enthusiasm and sportsmanship making our school proud. Congratulations to all students, parents and teachers involved.

Introducing FPS Staff: Mrs Lorelle O’Brien

Sydney to Tenterfield to Forster, WOW what an amazing teaching career I have had so far! I started my career at Chester Hill Public School in Sydney, teaching a year 5/6 extension class. After four years I put my hand up for a Kindergarten class and then I slowly worked my way back up through the grades. I can’t pick a favourite grade, I love teaching them all! After about 7 years I was ready for a change and was successful in applying for an Assistant Principal position in Tenterfield. This was a huge move for my family, going from the busy city where we had lived our whole lives to a small, beautiful, mountainous country town along the New England Highway, 15 minutes from the Queensland border. I had gone from participating in discussions about how bad the traffic was to listening to how the tractor got bogged or how the cow had a calf! At night, I had gone from listening to the noisy traffic to listening to the cows chomping on grass. We had a four year plan to stay in Tenterfield that turned into nearly seven years, we loved it so much! During my time at Tenterfield I was an Assistant Principal, Acting Principal and Instructional Leader across three schools. Two of the schools I supported were Teaching Principal schools of 11 and 18 students. I was lucky to experience different roles across different settings and support learning opportunities for children within very different communities. My family and I have now been in beautiful Forster for 20 months. We have gone from the city to the country to the coastal beach life. We are truly blessed! We have purchased a home in Forster and are loving the community and the lifestyle change. For me, I had visited Forster a few times for holidays and knew what a beautiful place it was. For my husband, he had visited Forster for most of his life, four generations of his family owned property and lived on Mitchells Island. I am really enjoying my role as one of the Deputy Principals of Forster Public School. I have two beautiful children who attend our school and I wouldn’t have it any other way, our school is AMAZING! Forster Public School has wonderful students and dedicated teachers who provide the best learning opportunities for every single child in our school. I’ll share this interesting fact with you: I was chatting to a staff member a few weeks after I arrived and it turns out she taught at Miller Public School, a school that I was a student at. After more discussion and getting out photo albums it turns out Mrs Liz Maher was my Year 2 teacher and I still have a merit award from her! It's a small world!

Class news- Year 5-6/4- Tree FROGS

5-6/4 have been studying and producing narratives. Our learning intention has been to create a variety of sensational starters to “hook” our audience. These are a few of the many fantastic character descriptive starters that have been written. There he lies amongst the scattered bones. His sharp teeth are blood stained in blood as red as a rose. His raging green eyes staring at me as I slowly step back. His scaly brown, red skin, scratches up against the ragged trees. His short stumpy arms crumpled up as he shreds apart a frighten raptor. His long tail sways side to side like a dog. Suddenly he roars, as loud as the sound of a house crashing down. By Byran Lilly the lion hearted was scourging through the jungle. She wears a tan brown jacket, hat, pants and plain black boots. She was covered in grazes and vines, BUT she was to carry on. Her quest was outrageous and dangerous, but even though her hair and clothes were a mess, SHE and only she was the one, so she had to continue! By Hayley She is a girl. She has blonde hair with dark brown at the top and light brown at the bottom, she always has her hair up. Her name is Ava. She loves wearing jump suits with Nike shoes. Her skin is really tanned, like she has been sitting in the sun for a bit. Her eyes are blue with green. Ava’s nose is really smooth, no make-up what so ever. Ava is a ghost hunter! By Jorga Wong the warrior stood tall and proud after the brutal battle. He held his iron sword tightly and raised it high above his big, bald head. He wore an iron chest plate, leather boots and pants covered in chains. Blood stains his muddy skin and blood drips from his mouth. There is no time left to spare, he was the only one left. By Roman There she was, Delphi the witch, young and beautiful. Her hair was silver like the moon, with blue streaks in it. He skin was as white as a cloud. Her dress as black and mysterious as night. When she lifted off the ground to fly there was silence, she was light as a feather. By Ciel

Class news: Kindy 25- QUOKKAS

It’s been a busy start to the term for K-25 Quokkas!

This term our focus is pets and we are learning all

about fish this week. So far we have learnt about

the different parts of a fish, talked about different

types of fish and where they come from, and even

found out some interesting facts about fish. Did

you know that the oldest known fish in the world

was 65 years old?! We have also read the book The

Rainbow Fish and created some beautiful Rainbow

Fish artworks to display in our room.

In history, we’ve been looking at our families and

where they come from. We have students in our

class from many different areas of the world. This

is very exciting for us, as we get to learn all about

different countries and cultures from our

classmates!

We’ve been sharing some very interesting stories

about how our cultures are different. Ocian told us

that in Mexico, where her dad is from, you can pick

as many mangoes to eat as you like off the trees

for free. We thought this was awesome!

Nanma told us that where she is from in India, they

don’t sell toilet paper in the shops. Very different

to how we live in Australia!

We have also been trying really hard with our

reading and writing this term and have been

improving with our counting. We can’t wait to see

where our learning takes us next!

PDHPE

This year, Mr Maher has taken on the role of teaching Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) across all years. During their time with Mr Maher, the students learn about a number of subjects. Some of those are themselves and how they grow and change, those around them, healthy habits including lifestyle and safe choices, Fundamental Movement Skills such as sprinting, jumping, catching and throwing and team games. The new PDHPE syllabus was released by the NSW Department of Education recently and has seen a rise in the importance of this area across all stages of student growth. Mr Maher has enjoyed the change so far and is excited to work with all stages across the school.

Regionals Canoeing Championships

The 2019 Regionals Canoeing Championships were held from 22nd -24th of March in Jackadgery near Grafton on the Mann River. Temperatures were soaring, conditions on the water were fantastic, with challenging rapids present, especially for the slalom events. The youngest boy in the competition, ten-year-old Forster Primary School student Maxim, competed in the U14 age group. In his debut on regional level he made third fastest time in both the K1 White Water Sprint and K1 Slalom events as well as the second fastest time in the Wildwater race. Amazing results that reflect his determination and potential. He is now greatly motivated and very much looking forward to the State Championships in May!

Paid Sport Gets Taught Since the beginning of Term 2, Forster Public School students in stage 3 (Year 5/6) have been given the opportunity to attend paid sport. So your probably wondering what paid sport even is, am I right? Well you could call me a MIND READER! Paid sport is a five week program that the students pay to do, hence the name ‘Paid Sport’. The sports Forster Public School have chosen include gymnastics and basketball at the YMCA, tenpin bowling, laser tag and putt putt, tennis at the nearby courts with Jamie McDonagh and soccer taught by Jeff Summers who has represented Australia in soccer. We also have the PSSA sports which are netball, touch football, and rugby league. The students love doing paid sport and have learnt new skills. In three more weeks, the students will have the opportunity to choose another sport for another five weeks. As you’ve probably heard there has been a change of staff in class 6/3 Rosellas. Miss Layne Ross sadly left our school after one glorious term. Fortunately, Ms Sam Simmons has taken over 6/3 Rosellas and we welcomed her with open arms and have loved having her for these first couple of weeks. She has already started doing some amazing learning with us, such as Google classrooms, which we all love. We can't wait to see what else the term brings for us! Keira and Eve School Leaders
