Administrator’s CornerHello, Vikings! We’re still working on three main projects here in the Admin Office:

1. Building a full database of all active IOV members. We are working with a couple of lodges who have had trouble keeping their member lists up to date during officer transitions. We RELY on accurate lodge reports for reporting and our Journal mailing list. If your lodge is having difficulty with record keeping, please consider stepping up and helping out!

2. Insurance Surrenders. We sent a list to all lodges of current and past members who still show as active policy holders. IF YOU DO NOT PLAN TO SURRENDER, please fill out the Surrender Form included in this Journal, check the “no sur-render” line, and return. In order to have a full picture of the IOV Insurance Exit Strategy, the Illinois Department of Insurance has asked that we project how many policies will not be surrendered by June 2021. Communicating your plans with us is VERY helpful!

3. Creating a new website. We’re getting close! The new website is in progress, and our goal is to have it done by mid-September. We will notify the lodges when it is ready!

CORRECTION: Recently we reported that Baltic Star #112 was closed. Since then we have heard from their Chief that they are still active with members. As always, please let me know if you have any questions I can help with!

84th IOV Convention was a Grand Success!June 13-15, 2019 - Jamestown, NY

Many thanks to Ingjald Lodge #65 for hosting the 84th IOV Convention and Grand Lodge Meeting! Viking delegates from member lodges as far east as Braintree, MA and west as Omaha, NE traveled to Jamestown to participate. The planning committee and Ingjald members coordinated many opportunities for convention attendees to relax, laugh, dance, eat (so much good food!), and spend quality time thinking about the future of the IOV. It was great for everyone to experience Ingjald’s beautiful Lake Park facility and explore the area around Jamestown. In attendance were 23 voting delegates; 8 Past Grand Chiefs (two actively serving on Executive Council); 11 additional Executive Council members and many Viking members. Ten subordinate lodges were represented in total. Together we enjoyed a Chicken Barbeque (Thursday evening), Steak Fry (Friday), and Chief’s Banquet (Saturday). Adding to the fun were the spirited “Disco Divas” and “Karaoke Kings!” During the business portion of the convention, Committee Chairs shared many updates on the various aspects of the IOV (administrative and programs). In general, IOV is in good standing financially. Membership has seen a decline for most lodges, and we will need to discuss this more in the future. We talked about wanting a closer connection with Burn Camps across the country and explored how to build those relationships. Mike Borden from UTG joined us on Friday of convention to review IOV finances and discuss our “exit strategy” from the insurance program. The agenda was filled with IOV cultural history and tradition, providing a sense of unity and reflection. One of the highlights of Convention is always the election of Executive Council members and Grand Lodge officers. Thank you to all nominees for your willingness to serve and lead us through this critical time!

CONGRATULATIONS to IOV’s 2019-2021 Executive Council Members:• Melinda Worden, Grand Chief, Ingjald #65• Rodney Ottum, Vice Grand Chief, Sigurd #30• Tom Jandt, Grand Treasurer, Linne’ #57• Britt Hichue, Grand Secretary, Linne’ #57• Bill Schaefer, Junior Past Grand Chief, Linne’ #57• Sandy Cramm, Assistant Grand Herald, Grand Lodge (formerly Clara Lodge #118)• Jane Fosberg, Ingjald #65• Robert Greenwald, Grand Outer Guard, Ingjald #65• Robert Grinnell, Linne’ #57• Barb Hendry, Harald #13• Steve Kosthorst, Ingjald #65• Bryan Nelson, Grand Herald, Ingjald #65• Bill Peterson, Grand Inner Guard, Ingjald #65

Debbie Jacobs took pictures of the IOV Delegates and Grand Lodge Past Chiefs. Betsy Lynch took many pictures throughout the Convention and posted them on Facebook (Vikings 65) for anyone to see; additional photos are available on the IOV Facebook page. The Convention Committee members worked hard and diligently for over a year planning this very successful 84th IOV Convention. Many thanks to: Bryan Nelson, Bob and Orrissa Greenwald, Bill and Debbie Peterson, Tom Eckberg, Steve Kosthorst, Mindy and Steve Worden, Tim and Jan Fagerstrom, Betsy Lynch, Jane Fosberg, Paula Steele, Debbie Pavlock, Lynn Lindberg, Linda Smith and Ron Willey. There were many more who volunteered throughout the Convention. Ingjald Lodge Chief Jane Fosberg took the opportunity to congratulate Mindy Worden, and to express sincere thanks to the Convention Committee and all the dedicated volunteers who made the Convention run so smoothly. Together they provided wonderful fellowship, and exhibited outstanding Jamestown hospitality. “Many hands make light work” as shown by our successful Convention!NOTE: The full minutes of the Grand Lodge meeting will be reviewed and approved by the Executive Council at the October meeting, and will be available to members following.

It was with pride and ceremony that Ingjald Lodge Past Chief and Grand Lodge Vice Chief, Mindy Worden, was elected to serve as the Grand Chief for the next two years. Upon her election Mindy stated the following: “Serving as Grand Chief, I am looking forward to doing my best for the Independent Order of Vikings and preserving our future as a fraternal society.” On the final day of the Convention, a special reception was held at the Viking Lake Park in Mindy’s honor. Scandinavian entertainment was provided by the Viking Mixed Chorus, Thule Dancers, and music by Don Sandy. Bob Greenwald, member of the Grand Lodge Executive Council, introduced Jim Chipman as toastmaster for the Grand Lodge Banquet, an evening of food and fellowship. Members of the Executive Council and past Grand Chiefs were escorted to their tables by Jamestown Lodge Past Chiefs. One of the evening’s highlights was when Onnolee Samuelson, Past Diana Lodge Chief (1976), proudly presented her daughter Mindy with the traditional white jacket worn by IOV Grand Chiefs. A delicious buffet featuring many Scandinavians foods such as Swedish meatballs and ham, along with other dishes, was enjoyed by all.

Burn Camp News

Great Lakes Burn Camp Opening August 4, 2019 brought the 25th opening of the Great Lakes burn camp located on Pretty Lake in Mattawan, Michigan. According to Mike Longnecker, director of the camp, 70 campers and 90 counselors will enjoy the camp this year. Many of the counselors are former campers who return to help the new and younger kids through the experience. After a great meal, kind words and presentations from some of the donors present, we started to hear the sirens. First were five firetrucks that were leading the parade; then came the motorcycle escorts that came and came and came. By actual count, 442 motorcycles escorted the campers from Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo to the camp. Then came 45 firetrucks and emergency vehicles ranging in size from very large to colossal. The campers were in these vehicles. Bringing up the rear were 15 vehicles that looked like half car and half motorcycle that I have always called slingshots. Four members from Linne’ 57 attended the opening: Peg and Bill Schaefer and Chris and Bob Grinnell. Bill and Bob counted the vehicles and Peg and Chris took photos. It was a great day for a great cause. Next year we will start to advertise this event sooner sooner to give people more time to adjust their schedule – we would love to have more people attend!

Burn Camp Committee

The Great Lakes Burn Camp fund raiser, Tee Off Against Burns, was held on June 21 at Lincoln Golf Club with about 100 golfers playing. It was followed up by a steak dinner at Linne’ 57. With the hole sponsors and raffles that were held about $5,600 was raised for the camp. Mike Longnecker, president of the Great Lakes Burn Camp, drove from Jackson with his foursome to play in the event. Word quickly spread around the course that they were all ringers. The main organizer was Chris Wilks, but things went so smoothly that I’m sure his wife Traci had a lot to do with it. Not to forget his mother-in-law Shirley Green, A.K.A. the Queen of Lakeside, who along with Traci were waiting at the turn with brats and burgers to feed the hungry masses. To those not mentioned, you know who you are and so do we. Thanks to all for another very successful outing. The Burn Camp opening is August 4 and several of us are going to attend even though that is the day of Linne’s annual family picnic. At the dinner Mike announced that, since 2005, approximately

$120,000 has been raised for the camp due to the efforts of the Firefighters Local 370 and Linne’ 57. This was very rewarding news. At the June convention in Jamestown I asked for help getting current information from the Illinois and Connecticut camps that we could share with all of Vikingdom, instead of just referring to their websites. 3 or 4 people said they thought they could help, but I have not received any more information. Hopefully soon!

Hej Då! Hälsningar! Hei! Hyvää Päivää! Hello!

Do you have a Junior Viking that is interested in learning a Scandinavian language? Well, we have the funds and location. The Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota offers a complete immersion program for students to learn the language and customs while having fun! This is a great program and if you have talked to any former campers, they have a lot of good things to say about it. There is also a possibility of High School language credits available to those wishing to pursue it.

It’s not too early to start planning for 2020. You can submit your child’s name to our committee anytime between now and Febru-ary 15, 2020. First time campers have preference, but you can submit the names of previous campers again. Included in this Jour-nal are the Application Form and Rules. If you have questions you can contact any committee member.

If your child or Grandchild is not a Junior member yet, NOW is the time to sign them up to be eligible for this program. Check with your local Financial Secretary.

Tack så mycket!

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Vikings for choosing me for the Viking Scholarship. I am very thankful for receiving this scholarship, I have committed to attend Alma College in the fall. This scholarship will help fund my first year at Alma Col-lege. I am very excited to enter the next chapter of my life and to become a Scot. Thank you again for helping me achieve my higher education goals. Jillian Gripton

I am Karianne Yuchnitz and I am honored to have been gifted this hefty award for my college education program. The Vikings lodge has always been a place I have loved growing up and playing on the big playground. Thank you for creating a safe and fun environment that the whole family can enjoy at the Viking Lodge. I am planning on advancing my education at JCC in hopes of joining the air force with a Biotechnology degree at age 20. A plan for the future will help guide me on my jour-ney and I wouldn’t be able to do any of it if it weren’t for this scholarship. Thank you again. Karianne Yuchnitz

ORVAR ODD LODGE #24Omaha, Nebraska

Supporting Our Community The Midwest and Iowa & Nebraska especially had extreme flooding along the Missouri river and 4-5 other smaller rivers. We had late snow and a large amount on ground when1-2 inches of rain came and turned snow into pool and rivers. Some towns turned into islands & some had 8 ft of water in their homes and businesses. Orvar Odd # 24 voted to donate money to the Salvation Army to help flood victims. Pictured is our Chief Stein-Inge Hordvik and Tres. Wayne Mattson presenting the money to Salvation Army.

Olden Days Vikings were always involved in parades and showing off their helmets without horns! 1914 Omaha Vikings in parade and the ceremonial team-names unknown. (oops-saw one helmet with horns!)

Midsommar Omaha Without our Lodge building, Omaha Vikings joined with our local Midsommar Festival committee on June 23. Our booth was run by Sharon Lilledahl along with Chief Stein Hordvik. We served rice pudding and, to make it easy to eat, put it in ice cream cones! The theme this year was Danish - fun & fighting was had by all.

Hello from Linne’ #57 in Muskegon.  I can’t believe how fast this year is going. I hope you are enjoying your summer: I know we are having a great summer at Linne’.  First, I want to say THANK YOU to Jamestown for hosting a great convention. The accommodations were excellent and the dinners at the lodge were top notch. Thank you again! Linne’ Lodge has been very busy this summer. On May 9th our Vice Chief Greg Liskey and his wife Mary Beth put on the Mother/Daughter Banquet. The Step into Spring Steak Fry was May 11th, put on by Mary-Lou and Charlie Wright and their committee. The Spring Flowers Steak Fry was on May 18th, chaired by Judy Bisson and committee. On May 23rd my wife and I put on the Senior Luncheon. On Memorial Day we had a Float the Boat fund raiser, to help restore a PBR 7331 River Patrol Boat from the Vietnam War. Flo Predko spearheaded this effort and a lot of money was raised. June 1st was the Pub Peda,l hosted by Lee Jensen and Dianell Majors. Over 400 bicyclists were here! Food was served and a lot of beer was consumed. On June 15, Paul and Kris Prentice and Tom and Char Richardson put on the Shrimp Boil with their committee

of volunteers. They cooked 9,000 shrimp!!! Midsommar Fest was on June 22nd. Britt Hichue and Mary Hendon were chairs for this party. The Committee did a great job cooking all the homemade food.  We had a get together on July 4th, with brats and burgers prepared by the Majors and Cook Families and fireworks over Muskegon Lake. The Country Western Dinner and Dance was on July 27th. Charlie and Mary-Lou Wright and their committee did a great job as always. Just a reminder that Linne’s 100th Anniversary Celebration is on October 12th. The Executive Council will be here, and you are all invited to come and enjoy the party. Guests are staying at the Shoreline Inn; call 231-727-8483 for reservations. If you have questions, feel free to call the Lodge as some of the details are still being worked out. Enjoy the rest of your summer and be safe.

VIKINGS WORKING TOGETHER

Ingjald Lodge is indeed fortunate to have committed inner groups that help financially and provide a wide range of pro-grams and interests. The Viking Marina Association, Past Chiefs Club, The Viking Trailer Association, Viking Boat Club, and the Sportsmen’s Club have ALL made contributions in the past and continue to do so. Our current Ingjald Chief, Jane Fosberg, has the ability to see Lodge needs and improvements to our Lake Park and then develop plans to pay for them. She knows what groups to ask for help on various projects; often combining the efforts of multiple groups to achieve her goals. Recently the Past Chiefs donated a $1000 for a new kitchen grill; The Viking Marina Association pledged $2,500 to help repair Lake breakwall; and the Sportmen’s Club donated money to purchase a new large screen t.v. and several new grills for our picnic area. The Viking Trailer Association organized a “Golf Cart Parade” around the 4th of July. Twenty-six carts decorated in red, white and blue provided en-joyment for those who participated and for the onlookers. The Trailer Association has also contributed to the Chautauqua Lake Association, Family Picnic, Children’s Burn Camp, and internet for our clubhouse. The Boat Club held their Annual Harry Carl-son Fishing Contest for youth and adults. John VanHorn, Cole Bloomquist, and Drew Bloomquist were winners with each re-ceiving $25. All of the inner groups listed contributed financially toward the recently renovated pavilion adjacent to our main building. This cooperation of our inner groups is not just this year, but has been ongoing for many years. Even though we often forget to say thanks for their support; these inner clubs have and continue to play a vital role in making our Lake Park facility and program wonderfully better each year.

VIKINGS AWARD SCHOLARSHIP

Ingjald Lodge Chief Jane Fosberg welcomed the scholarship recipient, her family, guests and Lodge members. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Karianne Yuchnitz, a recent graduate from Panama Central School, was presented a scholarship award given at the annual Viking awards ceremony held at the Viking Lake Park in Maple Springs. The scholarship was given by the International Order of Vikings represented by Jamestown Viking Lodge #65. Presenting the award was I.O.V. Grand Lodge Council member Robert Greenwald and other I.O.V. Executive Council members Steve Kosthorst, Jane Fosberg, Bill Peterson, and Bryan Nelson. In addition to the monetary awards, Karianne also received personally inscribed certificates, corsage and a number of pictures of the award ceremony. Viking Chief Fosberg stated that she was personally very proud of the graduate and extended congratulations on behalf of all Vikings. She also applauded the IOV and Ingjald Lodge for their commitment to education. Karianne had the opportunity to introduce her family and tell where she was going to college. Since 1964 there have been 322 Viking scholarships awarded totaling $225,400!!! The evening was truly memorable and made all in attendance proud to a member of the I.O.V. A congratulatory reception was held following the ceremony. This reception was sponsored by the Past Chiefs Club of Ingjald Lodge and the Viking House Committee.

Can You Help Us Find These Vikings? We currently have about 1,300 active policy holders in the IOV Insurance Program. Below are the names of 186 current and past members who we need to contact about the status of their policy but, unfortunately, we do not have a current mailng ad-dress of phone number for them. We are hoping that YOU, as family and friends of these individuals, can help us find them! We are aware that many people may believe they have already surrendered their policy but, for one of several possible reasons, the policy has not yet been closed. The quicker we can communicate with these folks regarding their policy status and plans, the sooner we can move on to other conversations! IF YOU KNOW ANY OF THESE PEOPLE, please…. 1. Have them complete the Surrender Form in this Journal and return it to the Fraternal Administrator, or 2. Contact the fraternal administrator with up to date information (phone, mailing address or email) so a surrender committee member can follow up.

THANK YOU for your help! The IOV Surrender Committee
