    Editors Notes

    Phil WoodsAuthor & Editor

Welcome to the very first edition ofmy e-magazine, dedicated to mypassion, Formula One.

This first edition is a pre-seasonpreview of the upcoming season in2012, just weeks away. In this edition,

I will be looking at each teamindividually and their chances ofsuccess for the season ahead.

This is the most exciting time of theseason as everyone starts with aclean slate. Will Red Bull run awaywith it again? Will McLaren have

managed to catch them up? Have Ferrari stopped the recentseason rot? Could there be a surprise in store? We cant forgetwhat happened in 2009 with Brawn GP, can we?

As well as looking at each team individually, there will be somevery interesting interviews. Including, an interview with CaterhamCEO, Tony Fernandes CBE. An interview about the new circuit in

Austin, Texas (The Circuit of the Americas).

A Preview of the season wouldnt be complete without the GrandPrix Dates. Please be aware that these are subject to changehowever this is a rarity (apart from Bahrain last season of course).

All opinions in this magazine are my own, unless they are part of

an interview. Please respect that when reading the magazine.

I do hope you enjoy the magazine, you can find more at mywebsite www.myformulaone.com

    2012 Major Regulation Changes

The biggest change in regulations in 2012is the height of the nose. This has led toan unique step in the cars noses (as seenhere on the Caterham CT-01). The regsstate that although the height of thechassis immediately ahead of the cockpitcan still be 625mm above the referenceplane (PR), but in the space of 150mm itneeds to fall to 550mm. This is what hasled to the strange nose steps we haveseen on most cars.

The next big regulation change is the ban on off the throttle blowndiffusers. That was the practice of using hot exhaust gases to

increase down force on an F1 car. The system was full ofcontroversy, as it was banned for Silverstone in 2011, the only raceFerrari managed to win. This showed how effective the system was.In 2012, the exhaust outlets now cannot be on the floor ahead ofthe diffuser. They now have to be further forward and higher up.They also must be rounded and have no internal divisions.

The other changes include, perhaps most significantly, in seasontesting. This may only be one three day test, but its much betterthan a complete ban.It also looks like we will never see another Canada 2011 race, asthey have now bought in race suspensions at the four hour point. There are more changes, but the final one I want to mention is the

safety car issue. From 2012, any cars will be able to un-lapthemselves and join the back of the pack. This will stop a bug bearof mine, where leading drivers are impeded at the restart.

    New Circuit - Austin, Texas

Earlier in the month, I interviewed author of F1 in America, Peter Habicht. I wanted to get an insight into

how things were progressing and how the fans in the USA felt about having F1 back. This is thatinterview.

As part of the lead up to the 2012 season, I wanted to look at the newest date on the calendar, this beingAustin, USA. I spoke with Peter Habicht, author of the blog 'F1 in America'. He kindly gave me some ofhis time to give us a look at what this new date means for F1 fans in America. Here is the interview in full:

First of all thank you for allowing me to ask you some questions. How excited are you to have F1 back inthe USA?

"Formula 1 fans in America are very enthusiastic about the upcoming race in Austin later this year, and

we're looking forward to experiencing what we've been watching around the world on home soil."

Do you think the American public will take to F1 this time? All over the world it is the pinnacle of motorsport but in the USA it has to fight for supremacy with NASCAR and IndyCar to name just a couple.

"F1 in America can succeed, but it will take a unified approach between Bernie, teams, drivers as well asF1's sponsors and partners to make the most of the opportunity. NASCAR and IndyCar are naturals asfar as converting a fan base, but to ensure the sport's longevity, F1 needs to create something different inthe US while building a brand following."

Over the past couple of seasons we have seen new races in South Korea and India. The one big newsstory that seems to precede every new circuit launch is, will it be finished in time? They always are, butthere have been some publicly announced contract issues in Austin. Will Austin be finished in time?

"The news from Circuit of The Americas has been good and work's moving ahead full steam. They'vebeen great with photos and updates on their Facebook page, and now there's even a webcam set up tocover the site. I recommend @StatesmanF1's (Twitter feed) coverage of the progress also for anotherperspective as well and haven't heard of any reason why the track won't be finished in August asannounced. India and Korea certainly ran into their own roadblocks to getting ready for race day, but myfriends in Austin have said there seems to be a way where there's a will in Texas, and I would add that'sespecially true when there's plenty of financial and political capital at stake."

With the announcement of a 2nd race for the USA, this time in New York, this must be dream land for USmotor sport fans?

"The 2013 race will be taking place in New Jersey, across the Hudson river from the iconic Manhattanskyline, and the location seems to have all the earmarks of a real coup for Bernie and the sport. Theconstruction of this street circuit will be interesting to follow, and the use of public transportation on behalfof a 'green event' is very forward thinking."

Isn't it time we had some North American race drivers in F1?

"The US has been ready for an American behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, and with two home racesfor the 2013 calendar there can't be many reasons left why we don't see more than one driver compete

on the same stage for a US audience. The effect of having two races here for drivers like CalifornianAlexander Rossi, who has been preparing for an opportunity like this for most of his career, should be tosustain American driving talent in the sport while giving American F1 fans someone to cheer on at everygrand prix.

    New Circuit - Austin, Texas

Part 2Are you expecting an exciting race in Austin? What do you think of the circuit design?

"This track will see some of the best racing in North America, and the feeling among the Tilke engineersI spoke to during my last visit was that both the city of Austin and Circuit of The Americas will make forthe best fan experience any of them have had a hand in creating. From a driver's perspective, thecircuit's layout is a great mix of legendary sections from Silverstone, Hockenheim and Bahrain withplenty of runoff and overtaking opportunity. The 200 mph back straight should be a good spot to listenand the 133 foot elevation change that peaks by turn 1 will make for some of the best views at anycurrent F1 circuit."

    Tell us about your website?

'F1 in America' is a blog I started while organizing the longest running and largest community ofAmerican F1 fans in San Francisco. After the final USGP in 2007, our group has brought together moreUS based F1 fans to watch Grand Prix racing together than any other event in the USA. I've metthousands of fans from more than 50 countries at over 120 races, so it was natural that I began todevelop a picture of an American audience as well as an understanding of the challenges andopportunities the sport faces. I'm particularly interested in the wave of new ideas that are coming fromcompanies in my backyard here in the social space, and I keep visitors in touch with what I'm reading onmy Facebook and twitter pages."

Who will win the championship in 2012? Drivers and constructors

"You know, I get asked if I bet on Formula 1 all the time, and the more it seems that I learn about thesport, the less I feel inclined to predict any given outcome. Your readers may not know this, but it's evendifficult to find a sports book that will take an F1 bet in Las Vegas - the home of sports betting! Neweyand Vettel have clearly been a force to be measured against at Red Bull, so I'm keeping an eye on howeveryone does their first few races this year against them - ask me in a bit when I have a better ideahow much the other teams have made up the difference over the winter . . ."

    Which team do you follow?

I'm one to root for an underdog with heart and I've followed Williams since their BMW days - let's seehow they do this year!"

Will the number of F1 cars racing in the USA this time reach double figures? (thinking of Indianapolis)

"There are still fans who haven't recovered from that race on Father's Day in 2005 - so let's hope it staysin the double digits. We're all looking toward the future of the sport and I would expect that the same setof circumstances wouldn't ever occur again at any circuit."

This all sounds very promising. I personally am looking forward to F1 going back to the USA. I'd like totake this opportunity to thank Peter for his time and for giving us all an insight into how US Formula One

    fans are feeling right now.

    Team Preview - HRT

We begin our season preview with one of the three newest teams on the grid, HRT, or HispaniaRacing Team, to give them their full title.

Along with Caterham F1 (formally Team Lotus) and Marussia F1 (formally Virgin and MarussiaVirgin), HRT started life in Formula One just two seasons ago. They are a Spanish team based inGermany, if that makes sense! However during the 2012 season they will be moving to a new

home in their native country, as they try to give themselves a national identity. They began undera small cloud of controversy as they were arguably the least prepared team for the opening race, only just having their car ready in time for the season opener. They fared little better last season,as yet again they were literally still building their car as qualifying approached. They were unableto qualify the car in order to take part in the race. Despite starting their first two seasons on theback foot, they have still managed to ensure they didn't finish at the back of the field, beatingMarussia Virgin to 11th place on both occasions.

This season HRT really can't hope to move any further up the grid, so far they are fashionablylate again, but this time they are the final team to announce a confirmed driver line up, with only

Pedro De La Rosa confirmed in a race seat. Tonio Liuzzi is still under contract at HRT but mayhave to take a back seat if a driver comes along with valuable sponsors. I personally hate it whena driver buys an F1 seat, this is the pinnacle of motor sport and it's very sad that the cream is notnecessarily rising to the top. I'll talk more about that at some time in the future.

So what hopes for the season ahead for HRT? Basically, it's got to be all about survival yet againand the team will be looking to build the foundations for the future as a Spanish national team. They have very little in the way of resources, which means you can expect the drivers to bepulling over quite a bit in 2012 to let faster cars past. It's a shame in some ways that they can'tattract one of the top drivers without a seat this season, I'm thinking Rubens and Sutil to name

two big unemployed names but if a certain Spaniard from the Red Bull baby team seems toprefer the idea of sitting at home, then what chance have the team got to attract big names?

At times during the past two seasons I've asked myself whether HRT are an assert or a liability toF1. I don't want to seem too harsh but they haven't exactly set the world alight with theirperformances. They have fallen outside the 107% rule on numerous occasions, yet been allowedto race due to practice speed. They've arguably been in the way more times than in a race withanother car. I'm all for new teams being given a chance, but if HRT can't improve this season, you have to ask if it's worth it.

So, finally, what do I think will be the outcome of the season for HRT?

    2011 Position - 11th2012 Position - 12th

Conclusion - A backward step for HRT this season. I can't see them having any major highlightsalthough qualifying for the first race may well be seen as a highlight.

    Team Preview - Marussia

Marussia, formally known as Virgin Racing and Marussia Virgin are the secondof the teams we will look at. They are of course one of the three new teamsthat entered two years ago. Marussia have managed to prop up the FormulaOne constructors championship for the past two years. This has beensomewhat of a shock as many people expected HRT to finish last.

This season, Marussia will run with the experienced Timo Glock in one car androokie Charles Pic in the other. Once again they have a mountain to climb but Iam expecting an improvement from this team in 2012. Perhaps not enough tocatch Caterham, but they will make some inroads to the midfield pack. A tie upwith McLaren will help them, but these things take time. One wonders if this is

the beginning of a long lasting partnership with McLaren, perhaps leading to aRed Bull/Torro Roso arrangement.

So what's in store for this season? I am expecting a vast improvement in theirlap times, perhaps even scrapping into qualifying two occasionally, althoughthat would be a surprise. Charles Pic is a relatively unknown package, quitewhy Marussia have chosen a driver who's record in GP2 over the last twoyears is not outstanding, finishing 10th in 2010 and 4th in 2011. Expect Charles

to be seeing more of the blue flags than the chequered ones. Timo Glock onthe other hand will show us how far the team have come. He's a great driver,it's just a shame he's at the wrong end of the grid.

So, finally, what do I think will be the outcome of the season for Marussia?

    2011 Position - 12th2012 Position - 11th

Conclusion - Unfortunately, I can't see Marussia making too much progress inthe way of championship positions. However they may surprise us with one ortwo jumps into qualifying two. Expect to see a F1 car that looks right thisseason, as the car in the past two seasons even looked slow (if that's possible)

    Team Preview - Caterham F1

Now we come to the guys formally known as Team Lotus. They have had to givehe name up due to Renault and their relationship with the Lotus brand.

Caterham have stuck with their drivers for a third year running, as a newish teamhey have been very shrewd in employing two top class drivers in HeikkiKovalainen and Vitaly Petrov, two drivers who are used to fighting at the front.t's just a shame that they lost the lotus name as they were the ones who boughthe name back into Formula One.

So what can we expect from Caterham this year? I am expecting good thingsrom Caterham this season. They claim that they have ambition to be in the

midfield this year. Last season they made good progress as the season went on,beating Williams and Renault on a couple of occasions. They closed the gap inmpressive style, but did it ever so quietly. I am expecting Caterham to improveagain this season and the question on everyones mind is will they score pointshis season? I believe they will, perhaps not on a regular basis but they will, inmy opinion be fighting with the likes of Toro Rosso on a regular basis. Caterhamave an exciting future in my opinion. The work they've put in gives them everyght to gain success.

So, finally, what do I think will be the outcome of the season for Caterham?

    2011 Position - 10th2012 Predicted Position - 9th

Conclusion - This season Caterham will score their first points, I also think theywill beat one of the regular midfield runners into 9th place. I'm going to stick myeck on the line and say that they will beat Sauber. Caterham have good drivers,

an experienced team boss in Mike Gascoigne and a shed load of ambition. Iexpect this team to improve a lot and get into qualifying two on a number ofoccasions. They could beat Toro Rosso and Sauber but we have yet to see theew cars, there could be a few surprises. I'll probably change my predictions

once February arrive and the cars take to the track for the first time.

    Team Preview - Sauber

Sauber F1 team go into the new season on the back of a mixed 2011. They hadhighs with points finishes for both drivers in Australia, then they were stripped oftheir points. They had the Monaco crash with Sergio Perez. Then they had a goodrun in, with a great race by Kamui Kobayashi in Canada, running in the top 3 for awhile until the mighty impressive Jenson Button powered through.

In 2012 they will be racing with the same two drivers again in Sergio Perez andKamui Kobayashi. Stability is always a good thing in my opinion, I have alreadysaid this in my Caterham preview. Kobayashi is a great driver and given a top carhe will be racing at the front. We have seen him battle with the top order on a fewoccasions and his 'no fear' approach makes him a candidate for a top drive oneday. It also makes him great to watch. Then there is Sergio Perez, who did well inhis debut season, he had a great race in Australia, only pitting once for new tyres. What made this impressive was that he is a rookie and they were brand new tyres, being Pirelli's first season.

So what is in store for Sauber this season? I'm thinking that they may well have atough season this year. They may struggle and I'm predicting that they will befighting for 9th and 10th place in the constructors championship with Caterham.Unfortunately for Sauber, I think they may loose this battle. It's a shame theyhaven't got the backing of a major car company like they had with BMW, this wouldmean an injection of money and some expertise.

So, finally, what do I think will be the outcome of the season for Sauber?

    2011 Position - 7th2012 Predicted Position - 10th

Conclusion - Seventh place was a great position for a team running asindependent. 2012 may well be different though as Toro Rosso, Williams andForce India will all improve this season. With my prediction of a vast improvement

for Caterham it looks ominous for Sauber. They may well prove me wrong and Ikind of hope so because I have a soft spot for Sauber. A team run and owned bythe legend that is Peter Sauber deserves some success. Peter bought the teamwhen BMW left and saved them from extinction. So there it is, I predict a backwardstep for Sauber, but on this occasion I really hope I am proved wrong. Go onSauber, show me that I have made a huge error in my predictions.......Please

    Team Preview - Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso had a fantastic top speed in the second half of last season, this enabled themto rise up the order on race day on many occasions. It was a common site to see bothJamie Alguersuari and Sebastian Buemi at the back end of the grid, however theymanaged to get in the points a lot. This was due to a good top speed so the couldovertake using the DRS system.

It was announced in December that both Jaimie Alguersuari and Sebastian Buemi weredropped from the team. This was a shock to many including the drivers. It's a shame reallybecause I believe Jaimie Alguersuari has a lot of talent and maybe should have beengiven a bit more time. Sebastian Buemi however has arguably had enough time to provehimself and I can sort of agree with the dropping of him. Sorry Sebastian, nothingpersonal. Toro Rosso have instead employed two young drivers to replace them, these areFrench driver Jean-Eric Vergne and Australian Daniel Ricciardo. Daniel raced with HRTlast season so has valuable experience of the Formula One tracks and how a F1 car

works, despite driving a dog of a car last season. Jean-Eric Vergne won the BritishFormula Three championship in 2010 and has a couple of other titles to his name earlierprior to 2010. Jean-Eric Vergne hasn't really won anything of real note, which means thatthe Red Bull Academy must see something special in him.

It's hard to preview the team when you don't really know the drivers, however DanielRicciardo did beat his opponent in HRT on a number of occasions last season. Given thathe was against an experienced driver he did really well and showed some promise. ToroRosso have always been in the midfield if you take out of the equation Vettels win inMonza a few years ago. I expect a car that will improve during the season but perhaps not

enough to get them out of the midfield. The car will be built to Toro Rosso specs for thefirst time without input from Red Bull. It'll be interesting to see how they get on, there isobviously a lot of talent there in the team.

    2011 Position - 8th2012 Predicted Position - 8th

Conclusion - I would say they will be pretty much the same as last season. They will be inthe midfield for most of the season, with a few points gained by the talented Daniel

Ricciardo (I have high hopes for this young driver by the way, a future F1 star). I amunsure of Jean-Eric Vergne and how he'll do, he doesn't have a track record to speak ofso I think he'll probably be a second or so off Daniel's pace in the first few races. In myopinion there will be no change for Toro Rosso as I believe they are destined for the tofinish in the same championship position as last season due only to a resurgence from theWilliams team in my opinion.

    Team Preview - Williams

Right, now we come to Williams in our season preview. 2011 was an absolute nightmarefor Williams, Frank must have been screaming to himself. We all have a special place inour heart for Williams, especially since Nigel Mansell won the championship in 1992 inthe Williams FW14B. Then there was 1996 when Damon Hill won the championship withthe team and Murray Walker said "I've got to stop now.....I've got a lump in my throat".Williams have had some wonderful times but in recent years there has been a steady

decline. We will come back to old drivers in a moment as I have a point to make.

Last year they had rookie Pastor Maldonado and the very experienced RubensBarrichello. I would have said not a bad mix, it's just a shame that they had the worst caron the grid (apart from the 3 new teams, and even Team Lotus beat them a couple oftimes). So for 2012, you'd think they would hope to have a much better car and stick withthe same well mixed line up as 2011. You'd be wrong, because they have let RubensBarrichello go and employed the services of another nearly new driver. Now I'm notsaying anything against Bruno Senna here, in fact I think he has some talent and with agood car could challenge for podiums, however I don't believe he'll follow in his uncleAyrton's footsteps (that's the only time I will mention them both together on this websitebecause it's wholly unfair on Bruno as he is his own person). What I am saying is that Ibelieve Williams have made another huge mistake, just like when they let Damon Hill goafter he won the world championship, what's all that about? I still don't understand to thisday. Now, as they are in recovery mode, they have decided to get rid of the mostexperienced driver in the history of the sport. It's like trying to restore a computer butthrowing the Windows disc away first.

So how are they going to do in 2012? I can actually see a massive improvement for them

this year. Despite what I have said they do have two good drivers (not great, but good). They should easily move up the field and finish in the points on a regular basis. I thinkthat a lot depends on the drivers. The team have taken some big steps in the backroomstaff and should be able to produce a competitive car, so much so that I think they will bebattling with Renault for 6th spot in the championships. However here comes the BUT, ifthe drivers aren't up to scratch then they will be fighting Toro Rosso, Sauber and ForceIndia. Let's hope that the team have got their act in gear and produce a better car.

    2011 Position - 9th2012 Predicted Position - 6th

Conclusion - Despite everything I have said, I do believe that Williams will have a goodseason in comparison to 2011. I believe that they will be on the road to recovery but theyreally need to think a bit more about drivers. They will be fighting for the tail end of thepoints and will occasionally get amongst the bigger points which will lift them to 6th.Here's hoping!!

Team Preview - Sahara Force India

Renamed ever so slightly this year as Sahara Force India, Dr Vijay Mallya's outfit have been risingup the F1 grid at a steady pace over the past few years. In this preview I will ask the questionwhether they can go any further or whether they have found their place.

n the 2012 season they will be continuing with the impressive and promising Paul Di Resta, andsomeone who I rated a couple of years ago when he raced for Williams, Nico Hulkenberg. Williamset Nico go following a pole position at Interlagos, but I won't go into that right now, see myWilliams preview to figure out my silence in that madness.

Force India, however saw the potential in Nico and took him on as reserve for 2011. I personallywas happy to see him still in the fold, I really didn't want him to be another talent that we never sawagain in Formula One. During this season they must have seen something in Nico (I suppose like aot of us did), as they've done away with the experienced Adrian Sutil.

Last season was a bit hit and miss for Force India. They had some great results, especially withPaul Di Resta, who more often than not out-performed his team mate. I don't know about you guys

eading this, but did it seem that on some occasions, when we all said what a great race Paul had,he would sometimes look disappointed? Or was that just me? For me that spoke volumes, because it was obvious that Paul knew how good the technicians and other talent at Force Indiawere, yet they deserved more out of their car on occasions. I believe it was a very good car withpotential but some upgrades didn't seem to work well for them. I suppose only the lads at Forcendia can confirm that.

On their day, Force India can and do compete with the front runners, the question is, what's instore for 2012? Well, they have two, what I would class as world champions in the making. Toealise that ambition though they'll have to have some luck as well as talent. I think we'll see Force

ndia in the points on a regular basis again, only this time i think they'll make another step up inclass and it'll be Lotus Renault who'll be doing the chasing, I'll speak more about that in the Lotuspreview. There'll be many people out there who will scoff at my prediction at this point, but there isa very valid reason why I believe this. I'd ask that you reserve judgement until all my previews arecomplete, thanks, that's very kind of you. I believe another step up the final championship table ison the cards in 2012, but then they reach the Premier League of Formula One and the question iswill they be able to consistently beat the top 4? Well, that's a question for another year isn't it?

    2011 Position - 6th2012 Predicted Position 5th

Conclusion - Another great year for Force India. I don't believe it's a time of consolidation, I believehey have the team at the factory, the team at the track and the team of drivers to do pretty well. Dr

Vijay Mallya will be a happy man in 2012 I think. Paul Di Resta will have an even better year andNico Hulkenberg will be up to speed pretty quickly. It's points, points and more points in 2012 forSahara Force India.

Next in our season preview we come to the team formally known as "the other Lotus". A team thathad been in so much controversy over the last few years they could be mistaken for troublemakers, although I'm sure they're not.

Last season they ran with a number of drivers mainly due to the unfortunate accident to thetalented Robert Kubica. They started the season with Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld, the whenQuick Nick didn't perform as well as they'd hoped, Bruno Senna was employed. The seasonstarted with so much promise when both drivers scored podiums in the first two races . It soonwent down hill when the innovative front facing exhausts seemed to limit the update opportunities. They still picked up points but they fell further and further back down the field as the seasonprogressed.

For the coming season they have dispensed of both their drivers from 2011 making way for 2ndchance youngster Roman Grosjean and former world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Roman last had ashot with Renault a couple of seasons ago but failed to live up to expectations, it could be arguedthat he was thrust in at the deep end following the departure of Nelson Piquet late in the season. Idon't believe he was really given the chance to shine. Kimi Raikkonen, on the other hand is a verysuccessful F1 driver, but left Ferrari when it seemed he didn't have the appetite for it anymore. After two years away from the sport, he returns and if stories are to be believed, is hungrier thanever.

The problem that I have with accessing how well Lotus will do this season, is that they have yetagain been blighted by their own innovation. They had been the main protagonist behind thereactive ride height system, this allowed stability under braking in the corners. This was bannedast week by the FIA and one wonders how much the Lotus car was designed round this

technology. If it was heavily designed round this they will have an issue, as to go back to thedrawing board at this late stage will surely hurt them.

How will this all play out for Lotus? Well to be honest I am not entirely sure. Their driver line up issomewhat untested at the moment as two questions remain unanswered, can Roman live up to hispromise this time? And, what is Kimi's motivation. Given all this, I have to conclude that it won't besuch an easy year for the team. Couple that with a resurgent Williams and an improving ForceIndia, I think they will spend most of the season in the midfield.

    2011 Position - 5th

    2012 Predicted Position - 7th

Conclusion - another tough season for Lotus, however I think the results will come toward the laterend of the season when Kimi gets back into his groove and Roman learns the ropes. I do thinkthey are destined for better things in the coming seasons, just not yet. Role on 2013, might just bethe shouts from Lotus fans during 2012.

    Team Preview - AMG Mercedes

Now we come to the business end of the grid and the first of our top 4 teams, Mercedes GP.

Ever since winning the championship under their previous name Brawn GP, this team have been tryingto get back to the top. Blessed with a first class engine, the brains of Ross Brawn, the might of a hugemanufacturer and one of the greatest ever drivers in the history of the sport (according to others), thisteam really should be on the podium regularly. Last season they failed to get a podium and spent theseason fighting off rumours that Michael Schumacher is about to leave. Prior to last season pundits saidthey'd get on the podium and yet again this season people are saying the same. What am I sayingthough? That's of course the most important thing (kidding, of course, there are many people far more intune with F1 than me).

It's unarguable that they have a great driver line up in Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. It's alsoa dead cert that they have a great team of background staff, both engineers and managerial. However,as so many football teams have found out in the past, you have to make the team gel in order to gainsuccess. So far this team haven't gelled well enough to make the podium. There have been flashes ofbrilliance, I'm specifically remembering Nico Rosberg in China and Michael Schumacher in Canada.

2012 will be Schumacher's final year of his current contract and unless he tastes success again, I can't

see him extending that further. He was the driver who made the most overtakes in 2011, whether thatwas down to skill or a mixture if DRS and poor qualifying, we don't know. I'll be honest and say that Icouldn't stand Schumacher in his first career, I hated the aggressive style of driving that often put peoplein danger, I got really annoyed with his arrogance. Since his return he has mellowed out somewhat andinterviewers have found a more pleasant man to deal with. He's been less aggressive on the track, ifyou put the Barrichello incident to one side for a minute. Nico Rosberg has been the better driver in thelast two seasons, that is without a doubt in my humble opinion. I think he will be the better driver in 2012too, this will make it even more difficult for Schumacher to stay. He will hate being second best to a teammate.

Mercedes will get on the podium this year, I believe they'll get it together and finally challenge again at

the front of the pack. They had a great top speed last season and that is likely to roll over into thisseason. Couple that with a car that has been two seasons in the making (by that I mean trying to put allthe pieces of the jigsaw together, not literally building it for two years) and they'll not be far off. Mercedesat the front will make this season even more exciting as Red Bull are unlikely to run away with it. Themain challengers for Mercedes this year will be Ferrari, I think it'll be a very close run thing between thetwo teams right up until the end of the season. Unfortunately for Mercedes, I think that Ferrari will winthat battle.....just. Why do I think that? Well, I think a couple of wins during the season for Alonso will bethe difference between the two teams.

    2011 Position - 4th2012 Predicted Position - 4th

Conclusion - despite my prediction placing them in exactly the same position as last season, I think theywill finally gel as a team and start to get podiums. I can see a maiden win for them under the nameMercedes, but as I said before, it'll be a couple of Alonso wins that'll keep them outside the top 3. WillMichael Schumacher win again? Possibly, but I wouldn't bet my house on it. It may well be a bittersweetwin, perhaps following an announcement that he is retiring........again. The outstanding Ross Brawn willlook back at 2012 and see it as the beginning of the road to another championship.

    Team Preview - Ferrari

he top 3, a place everyone in Formula One wants to be and yet when you get there, you are no longeratisfied and you want to be number one.

We start our look at the top 3 with Italian giants Ferrari, a team with such a rich history they get a specialeal just for turning up. This, of course is somewhat annoying to the rest of the teams, even though theyon't mention it so much.

errari have been under performing since Kimi Raikkonen's championship year and Felipe Massa's nearmiss. Their cars just haven't been on the pace with numerous glaring errors in their design. We saw Alonsotorm into the lead on a few occasions, only to be hampered through no fault of his own. Let me explain, he

made some amazing starts and overtakes in 2011 but as soon as he moved onto the harder compoundyre, he started to go almost backwards. There was also the front wing debacle, watching Felipe Massarive around circuits during practice sessions was almost painful sometimes, his front wing wobbling like itas on a pogo stick. This was their attempt to copy the Red Bull flexible front wing with no success.

aly is screaming out for success in Formula One, you'd be hard pressed to find a more passionate set ofans than the Tifosi at Monza. Can Ferrari deliver what they are hoping for? Well the short answer is no inmy opinion. They will race with the same two driers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa for the 3rd seasonunning. Massa Will be required to lift his game considerably this season as its the final year of his contract,e's been told in no uncertain terms that another season like last year, without any podiums will not becceptable. I still believe that he has the ability, last season he spent too much time tangling with Lewisamilton. Fernando Alonso won at Silverstone last season, that was his only win of the year, but he did ancredible job staying up close and personal to the leaders in an inferior car. Alonso's win at Silverstone wasue to the ban on off throttle blown diffusers. For that race only it was clear to see that this was Ferrari's

main issue, had they designed this technology well, they would have challenged in 2011.

What can the Tifosi expect from their heroes in 2012? I am expecting the top 3 to be much closer thiseason but unfortunately for the prancing horse supporters, I still believe Red Bull and McLaren will beumber one and two. Ferrari will be in a battle with Mercedes for 3rd place. It's a battle that they will win, I

hink that it'll be down to a couple of wins for Alonso. This will be the difference between the two teams. Theomplete ban on off throttle blown diffusers won't really make a difference to Ferrari this season asveryone starts from a clean sheet. Massa will hopefully get back into shape this season, I'm justoncerned that it won't be enough to keep his drive in 2013.

    011 Position - 3rd012 Predicted Position - 3rd

onclusion - another season staring at the back of Red Bull and McLaren cars. They are likely to get moreodiums this season and a couple of wins for Alonso is not out of the question. Massa will hopefully have aetter season, he is still a top driver but he hasn't had the rub of the green recently. I've already said in myther previews that the top will be a lot closer this season, I'll say it again as I believe the points differenceill be minimal and Ferrari will still be in the hunt going into the last few races.

    Team Preview - Red Bull

Following two dominant seasons in Formula One, Red Bull Racing will be looking for a hat trickn 2012. How easy will that be?

This coming season, Red Bull Racing will be using a completely redesigned car. Last seasonscar was a direct descendant of the 2010 car, using the blown diffuser as the main build around.

They had the most successful adaptation of this technology by a country mile and that showedwith Sebastian Vettel seemingly always at the front. Mark Webber, however didn't fair so wellbut still had plenty of good finishes.

Red Bull will find this season a lot more difficult. McLaren will push them a lot harder this seasonand are, in my view, likely to beat Red Bull to the championship. In 2012 Red Bull will stick withhe same drivers, that being World Champion, Sebastian Vettel and Australian Mark Webber.

Mark Webber is in a situation similar to Felipe Massa, in that he needs to have a much bettereason to keep his seat going into 2013. You'd go a long way to find anyone who dislikes Mark

Webber so it'll be a shame if he doesn't stay on the grid, but as F1 is a competitive sport,

emotions have to take a back seat. When I talk about it being a more difficult season for RedBull, please don't mistake that for a struggle, try certainly won't struggle. They will in my opinionall just behind to McLaren.

n my previous previews I've not really talked about individual drivers and/or the driverschampionship. In the final two previews I will talk about it and where I think they'll finish. ForMark Webber, I think he'll have a much better season, however it still won't be enough to makea great deal of difference to his final position. This season I believe Mark will have two wins tohis name but it'll only mean a 5th place finish for him as he'll find the consistency of Alonso aough nut to crack. For current double champion, Sebastian Vettel I think a 3rd place will be his

nal outcome this season. I've been hovering between 2nd and 3rd for Sebastian, but settled in3rd, purely because I think Lewis Hamilton will have his best season yet. More about that in theMcLaren preview.

Red Bull are likely to be strong in aero again as they have the massive talent that is AdrianNewey. In races where aero matters you should expect Red Bull to reign supreme.

    2011 Position - Champions2012 Predicted Position - 2nd

Conclusion - its a huge ask for a team to win three titles in a row. I don't believe Red Bull willmanage this, however they will still have a good season with some very dominant races. Youmay well see them dominate again if Newey comes up with an innovation no one else has comeup with. You can never write off a team like Red Bull. In recent years they've been unstoppable. This coming season will be a little different, perhaps this will make F1 a little more exciting, onhe other hand it may just be season 3 of the world domination of Red Bull.

    Team Preview - Vodafone McLaren

We finally come to the end of our season preview looking at the teams. This time it'sMcLaren Mercedes, runners up for the past two seasons having been chasing down Red

ull with everything they have. I decided to upload both Red Bull and McLaren previews at

he same time, just to keep you guessing as to which order my top two would be in.

Up and down the paddock McLaren are the envy of the rest of the teams, purely due toaving the strongest drier partnership of all. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are bothecent world champions and when on top of their game are a match for anyone. Sinceenson won the championship with Brawn he has got better and better, a complete racingriver who I rate as one of the best in the history of the sport. He had pulled off some greatesults in poor cars earlier in his career, but nothing can compare to his drive in Canada lasteason. Simply put that drive in Canada was the greatest performance from any driver

nywhere, anytime. Lewis, on the other hand had a poor season in 2011, the majority ofundits put that down to off the track issues, specifically his split with his girlfriend and hismanagerial split with his father.

n 2012 I am expecting Lewis to come out fighting, I'm expecting him to get back to his besthis season and perhaps have his best season ever. It'll take a lot to beat Jenson Button thiseason as he has established himself as a number one driver, despite what all the punditsaid when he moved to McLaren two years ago. Lewis will find that having a competitive carom the word go and improved focus will ultimately land him the world title. Jenson in mypinion will come in 2nd, which will give McLaren the constructors championship.

How accurate will my predictions be? Only time will tell. I guess as pre season getsnderway, in just over a week we will have a much better idea of where the cars are at. Iope to have someone at the Barcelona test to give me some inside information, so stayuned for more on pre season.

    011 Position - 2nd012 Predicted Position - Champions

Conclusion - An excellent season ahead for the McLaren team. A double championship andone-two in the drivers championship could be ahead. I'm looking forward to seeing LewisHamilton back on song and Jenson Button pushing him all the way. The only thing that cantop Lewis Hamilton in my opinion, Jenson Button. So sit back, relax and look forward to

what I predict is going to be one hell of a season.

    Jerez - Test Report

Although I haven't been fortunate enough to be at Jerez to see the class of 2012 take to the track for therst time, I have compiled a report based on the information I have at hand.

efore I start, I would like to mention timings. There is a common mistake that fans, like myself have abouthe lap times at pre season tests, they read far to much into them. I've read on Facebook, Twitter and some

orums that people have concerns about certain teams times. Tests are, as the name suggests, just tests.Cars run with differing fuel loads, different set ups, different parts and too many other variables to mention. What that means, is that testing should be regarded as nothing more than the opportunity for fans to seehe new cars for the first time. For the teams though, it is so much more.

All but one team ran at the first test in Jerez, the only absentee was Marussia, who hope to take part inarcelona. Mercedes and HRT ran with their 2011 cars, whereas the remainder of the teams tested their012 challengers.

ollowing a few weeks of car reveals, the beginning of the week saw a glut of launches as we got a firstlimpse of the Red Bull RB8, the Williams FW34, the Sauber C31 and the Toro Rosso STR7.

On day one, Kimi Raikkonen finished top of the pile, whilst the time doesn't matter, what it did show is thate's quickly got himself back up to speed in an F1 car, despite only having a few days running last week in2010 Renault. Paul Di Resta , meanwhile was pleased with his first outing in the VJM05 commenting, Aood start to our winter test programme with 101 laps completed, which allowed us to get through all ourbjectives and a bit more." He then went on to add, "The baseline balance felt pretty good and the carerformed consistently over the longer runs, which was useful for collecting the data we need. So I think wean be positive heading forward and the next three days will be interesting as we have more test items tovaluate.

Going into day two, Michael Schumacher topped the time sheets in a 2011 Mercedes. The top 2012 spec

ar was the Red Bull of Mark Webber who completed 97 laps. The key milestone of the day was the firstse of KERS by the Caterham at the hands of Heikki Kovalainen. Paul Di Resta, yet again impressed in theVJM05. On day two, Adrian Newey was already fielding questions about the RB8, this time it was a

uestion as to whether the slot in the step was a clever aero part. Needless to say, he claimed it was justor cooling.

Day three saw a change of drivers. This time Nico Rosberg topped the time sheets, so it was obvious thatecond place was more of a guide. This time it was Lotus again, with a lap a second faster than 3rd place.he Lotus was at the hands of Romain Grojsean. Even in testing, this has to go down as impressive. Thisme last season, Lotus were impressing with some great times and started the season in great fashion, hen fell away as their front facing exhaust caused update limitations.

On day four, Fernando Alonso put some distance behind Ferrari's disappointing first test by topping the timeheets. Hamilton, Kobayshi and Grojsean all got within a second of Alonso. All in all, the times don't really

matter. What does matter is that Formula One is back. I'm assured that the cars may be ugly, but the still goke stink and sound like an F1 car should. We have no idea what fuel runs everyone was using but Lotus,n particular can feel confident they had a good run out. The first test is over, now it's off to Barcelona wherehope to have someone in place to bring me exclusive news.

    Interview with Tony Fernandes CBE

As Caterham prepare for their 3rd season in Formula One, we find out about Tony's views on so called 'paydrivers' and if they do indeed exist. We asked about the short and long term goals of Caterham F1 teamand much more.

Caterham F1 (formally Team Lotus), have finished in tenth position in the championship for the past twoseasons - they are also still seeking their first point. They've made giant steps in comparison to the othernew teams, in fact towards the end of last season they managed to beat a number of midfield teams.

t's without doubt that many people already know Tony Fermandes, however a little background to the manbehind Caterham F1 won't go amiss. Tony was born in April 1964, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He waseducated at Epsom College between 1977 and 1983, he then graduated from the London School ofEconomics in 1987. Tony then had a spell working for the Virgin Group, ending up as financial controller forVirgin Records, this was between 1987 and 1989.

A long way from running an F1 team and a huge airline, he was a chartered accountant (some say themost dull of professions - not my personal opinion of course). Following this, he returned to Malaysia andbecame the youngest MD of Warner Music. His involvement in music most likely came from a personalnterest, he is an amateur guitarist and a grade 8 pianist.

n 2001, Tony met the Malaysian prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, who advised him to take overan existing airline rather than start a new one. That was the beginning of Air Asia as we know it today. Athe point Tony took it over, it was loosing money hand over fist. Tony has an eye for potential success andsunk every penny into this new venture. What made his Air Asia success more remarkable was that hebegan just after September 11th 2001, a time when no one wanted to fly. Tony modelled Air Asia on theworlds most successful 'no frills' airline, Ryan Air from Ireland. Air Asia went from strength to strength underhe stewardship of Tony Fernandes.

Tony has various other business interests, such as Tune Hotels and English Premier League Club, QueensPark Rangers.

We jump now to the present and Caterham F1. Any formula one fan will know the story. In 2010, TonyFermandes became Team Principal of new Formula One team 'Lotus Racing'. In their first season theymanaged to beat their immediate rivals, finishing ahead of the other two new teams. In the second seasonhey finished in the same position, however this time they improved enough to challenge the midfield by theend of 2011.

Tony has assembled a top class team at Caterham F1, including the experienced Mike Gascoigne who hasbeen in Formula One since 1989, when he worked at McLaren. Along with everyone at the factory andhose at the track on race weekend, Caterham certainly have the ingredients to go to the very top one day.

Now it's time for the interview you've been waiting for. It may be short but it has some interesting insightsnto the mind of a hugely successful and intelligent man. Enjoy!

use the term pay-driver in 2012 all the drivers on the grid now are incredibly fit, dedicated, brilliantracers some have backing, some had a bit of luck that maybe the others didnt have early in theircareers, but they are all light years ahead of us mere mortals in terms of their talent.

    21/25

    Interview with Tony Fernandes CBE

Part 2or the first 3 seasons you've kept the same drivers and have improved every season. I recently wrote an article ono called 'pay drivers', it seems you took the decision to go for talent rather than a financial package. In your opinionre purported 'pay drivers' good or bad for F1? And why?

That is an excellent question but I think one that needs rephrasing. From the earliest days of F1 there have beenrivers who have been employed purely on their talent, and there have been drivers who have had the backing of a

amily, a company or very, very good friends! Today, there is not a pay driver on the grid who is not also supremelyalented, but i am not sure the same was true 50 years ago. The 21st century pay driver is a very different propositionrom his old-school counterpart, so I think it is somewhat unfair to use the term pay-driver in 2012 all the drivers onhe grid now are incredibly fit, dedicated, brilliant racers some have backing, some had a bit of luck that maybe thethers didnt have early in their careers, but they are all light years ahead of us mere mortals in terms of their talent.

rom the very early days of our team we decided to employ the two best drivers we could find, irrespective of whatnancial backing they had, and the pairing of Heikki and Jarno have repaid that investment in one very simple way hey raced the cars designed, built and maintained by the team into positions that earned us tenth place in our firstwo seasons, giving us Column One status with the financial rewards that brings. Neither of our drivers were, are orwill be for a few seasons to come, in a position to win a drivers title, so for us all our focus is on climbing up theonstructors championship. With that in mind, we have to continue to employ the best driving talent we can find, and

we have to balance that against our financial resources. In the drivers market now there are people out there who areoth talented and have financial backing, so for us not to consider those options would be bad business. Without aound business plan the sport would fail, so for most of us on the grid, the 21st century pay driver is a good thing ashey bring both talent and a revenue stream that otherwise would not exist.

ve predicted that you'll get some points this season, in fact I've said that you'll finish above Sauber. What is thekelihood of me being right?

dont want to make any predictions about the season ahead, particularly if you are asking me to say we will beat onef the teams that has been established as long as Sauber. What I will say is that I want us to score a point. It is our

hird year, we made good progress in 2010 and 2011 and the natural next step is to score our first point. (Editor - I amure you will, you deserve at least that) When we have done that lets see where we are, and who is around us.

What is the ultimate aim for Caterham F1?

Ultimately, many years down the line, it is to win championships. Until then, i want us to grow at a sustainable rate, emain open, honest and fan-friendly, shake up the establishment in the right areas, and love going racing. If we cano that the journey to ultimate success will be a happy one, and that is what really counts.

's common knowledge that fighting to move up the grid is difficult. The front runners seem to come out with newdeas for upgrades. You then have to figure out what they did to gain some valuable tenths. Is it frustrating when thisappens?

Not any more than any other team does. We dont spend our time worrying about what special bit has gone on thears ahead as we are too focussed on our own little family, but we do take a look at innovations that might make usuicker without diverting resources. However, i do think it is important to say that I think that 99% of the technicalebates are an utter waste of time for the people who really count the fans. One engineering team comes out with arand new way around a grey area in the rules and then we all go off and spend time and money looking at it, butoes it make the show any better for the fans? Did the double diffuser attract more viewers on TV? Did off-throttlelown diffusers make kids go to bed at night dreaming of becoming World Champion? No. I think that is an area theport needs to look at to make sure we spend money on innovations that both improve the show, and, even more

mportantly, bring benefits to the wider global community. Energy recovery systems are a good thing if we can helpmake automobiles more efficient then that is to be applauded, so lets focus the incredible minds we have access to

n ideas that will provide wider benefits to all.

f you could have any 2 drivers from formula one's history, racing for Caterham F1, who would they be?

d like to see how Heikki Kovalainen fares against Mika Hakkinen. Two Finns would be, almost literally, cool

    Ferrari - Clever? or Desperate?

t's been no secret that Ferrari have had a torrid few years for whatever reason. It'salso no secret that they need 2012 to be a success for the team. In this short articlewe look at the key changes to this years car, that may or may not make a differenceto how the season will go for them.

We all know by now that most cars look somewhat ugly, mainly due to the noses, butas you've already read (in the Tom Webb interview, if you haven't read it, you must),they look and sound like Formula One cars already, now they've been round the tracka few times.

Ferrari have made some major changes to their car, away from the enforced changesthat I want to bring your attention to this morning. Have a read and make your ownmind up, are these, as the title suggests, Genius or Desperation. So, here, without

    further ado are those major differences between the 2011 and 2012 cars;

    Shorter nose despite longer wheelbase.

Nose height optimised to account for new rules but also to optimise airflow under thechassis..

Switched to pull rod suspension at the front for both aero and weight distribution(centre of gravity).

Extreme undercut of the sidepod, including a triangular shaped intake.

The turning vane is unusually large to optimise airflow around sidepods.

Very different air box intake, much more of a triangular this year.

More normal perhaps is the driver position being much more upright, but this wasdown to a request from Alonso, apparently, so I guess that's one thing out of their

    control.

You can see from the picture above what the new car looks like and make a decisionfor yourself. Let the discussion begin! Use the hash tag #ferrarichanges to discusswhich part of this articles headline is the most accurate.
