    The great spectacle of Formula 1 has once again returned to Catalunya, with the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAA TELEFNICA 2010, one of the events that motorracing enthusiasts worldwide most look forward to.

    As president of the Government of Catalunya, I would like to take this opportunity to extendmy warmest welcome to all those who have come to the Circuit de Catalunya to see thisworld-class event taking place live in front of them.

    The teams, their drivers, mechanics and engineers, and all the other people who form partof Formula 1, can enjoy coming here to this superb facility with which they are very familiarbecause of its extensive use for pre-season testing.

    The start of the European Formula 1 season also has the added attraction of being able tosee, for the first time, three Spanish drivers, two of them Catalans, on the starting grid. Eachhas different aims, but they are all ready to delight the many spectators Catalans, Spaniards and people from around the world who come to Montmel looking forward to a thrilling event.

    I am fully convinced that this great sporting spectacle will be a huge success, both on anorganisational level as it has always been and on a competition level, and that this Grand Prix will continue to be one of the most highly appreciated and admired events in the racing calendar.

    El gran espectacle de la Frmula 1 arriba, un any ms, a Catalunya, amb la disputa delFORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAA TELEFNICA 2010 una de les cites esportives msesperades pels aficionats al motor.

    I com a president de la Generalitat aprofito aquesta oportunitat per donar la meva mscordial benvinguda a totes les persones que visitaran el Circuit de Catalunya, per poder viureen directe aquest esdeveniment dabast mundial.

    Els equips, amb els seus pilots, mecnics, enginyers, i tota la resta de persones queformen part de la Frmula 1 podran gaudir del Circuit de Catalunya, unes magnfiquesinstallacions que coneixen perfectament, ja que tots ells el fan servir per als seusentrenaments i les seves proves.

    Linici de la temporada europea de la Frmula 1 tindr, a ms a ms, lallicient de poderveure en directe, per primera vegada, tres pilots espanyols, dos dells catalans, en la graellade sortida. Cadascun dells amb diferents objectius, per disposats a fer fruir als nombrososespectadors, catalans, espanyols i darreu del mn, que arribaran a Montmel amb ganes deveure una interessant i emocionant cursa.

    Estic convenut que aquesta gran festa esportiva ser tot un xit, tant a nivell organitzatiu -com ho ha estat sempre-, com pel que fa a la competici, i que el Gran Premi dEspanya deFrmula 1 seguir sent una de les proves ms apreciades i reconegudes del mn delautomobilisme.

    Button headed home team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who putin a typically feisty performance, but ultimately lost out toButtons superior strategy. Rain had been predicted forSunday and with perfect timing it began to fall just as the

    cars headed out to the grid. It was only a gentle drizzle and notquite enough to push anyone into starting on intermediate tyres.The variable weather then galvanised the teams and drivers intomany different strategies.At the start Fernando Alonso got into the lead by shooting past

    the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber ahead, but theSpaniard had clearly jumped the gun and was ultimately assesseda drive-through penalty.

    A first-lap crash brought out a safety car, and with the rainincreasing in intensity some drivers down the field stopped forintermediates at the end of the lap. Second time around most ofthose at the front decided to come in, with Alonso, Webber, Vetteland Hamilton leading the charge. However, Button, Nico Rosberg,Robert Kubica and a couple of others decided to stay out on drytyres, which left them at the head of the field for the restart.For a couple of laps those on the wet-weather covers seemed to

    have the advantage, but with the track drying quickly it soonbecame clear that the decision to stay on dries was a good one.Those who had swapped earlier had to stop again and switch backleaving the drivers who had not pitted at all clear in front.

  • Later the rain returned and led to another round of stops, thistime for everyone, while a second safety car for debris closed upthe field. Button maintained his lead at the restart, but as the racewound down he was caught by Hamilton, who had spent much ofhis afternoon fighting his way past people. In the closing laps bothMcLaren drivers, like many behind, were struggling with worn outtyres, but they crossed the line safely with Button just 1.5 secondsin front.

    Rosberg turned his good early strategy call into third place, aresult that gave the Mercedes team a boost. After an eventful racethat saw him struggling to hold off other cars, his team-mateMichael Schumacher had to settle for a lowly 10th.

    Alonso recovered from his drive-through penalty to take fourth,having overtaken Kubica in the closing laps. Vettel lost a lot of timewith a bad early tyre call and delay in the pits, and could not bettersixth as once again his pole position was wasted. Petrov did agood job to take seventh and his first finish for Renault, ahead of alow-key Webber, Felipe Massa and Schumacher.

    Adrian Sutil was just outside the points in 11th, while amongthose who did not make the flag were Pedro de la Rosa, whohad an engine failure, and first-lap crash victims VitantonioLiuzzi, Sbastien Buemi, and Kamui Kobayashi.

    All in all an enthralling encounter that showed thesport at its very best.

    Este ao, en lo ms alto de la lista se encuentra McLaren, gracias a queJenson Button trae consigo el nmero uno despus de ganar el ttulo conBrawn la temporada pasada. El equipo funcion bien hacia el final de laspruebas de invierno y su inteligente sistema F-Duct -que ayuda a reducir laresistencia haciendo que el alern trasero entre en prdida- hizo reflexionara los rivales.

    Sin embargo, el equipo pareci estar un poco fuera del ritmo de los punterosal comienzo de la temporada, aunque Button logr un triunfo brillante en slosu segunda carrera con la escuadra durante aquel dramtico encuentro bajo lalluvia en Australia.     por su compaero de equipo Nico Rosberg, quien realmente

    ha redoblado el desafo de enfrentarse al siete veces campen

    mundial, lo que no ha daado su reputacin en lo absoluto.

    En 2009, Mercedes triunf aqu con el nombre de Brawn, en

    un da en que Mark Webber y Sebastian Vettel obtuvieron el

    tercer y cuarto lugar para la escudera Red Bull Racing. En esa

    etapa, estbamos comenzando a entender qu competitivo se

    estaba volviendo el equipo Red Bull. Un ao despus, muchos

    consideran al equipo como el favorito al ttulo para la

    temporada 2010. Desafortunadamente, Sebastian Vettel no tuvo un buen inicio

    de las multitudes este fin de semana. Aqu, Fernando Alonso

    ha sido el centro desde su debut con Minardi en 2001 y

    siempre parece cumplir con la tarea frente a los

    aficionados espaoles.

    De hecho, termin entre los cinco primeros en las ltimas

    siete carreras, logr cinco podios y obtuvo el triunfo ms

    celebrado en 2006 con Renault. Comenz este ao ganando

    en Bahrin y ya es obvio que Alonso/Ferrari es una

    combinacin soada. Puede ampliar el rcord total de Ferrari

    de 11 triunfos en la carrera espaola desde el primer xito

    obtenido por la escudera en 1954? El inicio relmpago de Fernando no le facilit para nada la

    vida a Felipe Massa, quien se recuper de la lesin del ao

    pasado a lo grande y se encontr con el compaero de equipo

    quiz ms duro en la calle de boxes. No olvidemos que Felipe

    gan aqu en 2007 y sali segundo al ao siguiente, por lo

    tanto, sabe lo que se necesita para ser rpido en este circuito.

    La temporada pasada termin quinto despus de tener que

    aminorar la marcha para ahorrar combustible.

    Williams gan el Gran Premio de Espaa en seis ocasiones;

    la ms reciente fue en 1997 con Jacques Villeneuve. Este ao,

    el equipo est liderado por Rubens Barrichello, que termin

    segundo el ao pasado y ha sido un habitual del podio de

    Barcelona durante los ltimos aos. La vida para el brasileo

    es un poco ms difcil que con Brawn, pero, al menos, la

    con parte del espritu de la original. Jamo Trulli obtuvo el tercer puesto aqu con

    Toyota en 2004 y 2005, pero este ao estar feliz slo con ver la bandera a

    cuadros, en tanto que Heikki Kovalainen sali sptimo en su debut con Renault

    hace tres aos. En junio del ao pasado, la FIA otorg un lugar para 2010 a Campos Meta,

    pero el fundador y ex piloto de Frmula 1 Adrin Campos luch para mantenerlo.

    Durante el invierno, se produjeron muchos cambios organizativos antes de que

    el equipo hiciera su aparicin en Bahrin bajo su nueva identidad: Hispania

    Racing. No obstante, HRT contina siendo el primer equipo que enarbola la

    bandera espaola, por lo que obtendr un buen apoyo este fin de semana.

    Los novatos Bruno Senna y Karun Chandhok saben que deben ser pacientes,

    pero, al menos, esperan poder ver la bandera a cuadros.BMW Sauber no es un equipo nuevo, pero baj de lugar en la lista de

    participantes de 2010 cuando tuvo que volver al Campeonato al final del

    ao pasado. Sin el apoyo de BMW, el equipo se redujo y, hasta ahora, no

    cumpli con la promesa de las pruebas de invierno. La presencia de Pedro

    de la Rosa significa que el equipo suizo obtendr mucho apoyo local, en

    tanto que Kamui Kobayashi se iniciar en su primera carrera espaola

    de Frmula 1.Por ltimo, y no menos importante, est la escudera Virgin Racing.

    Los problemas tcnicos hicieron que el inicio de temporada haya sidotenso para el nuevo equipo, pero desde China, finalmente tuvo tiempode ponerse al da con el desarrollo, por lo que se espera que se hayanabordado los problemas de confiabilidad.   • After the hustleand bustle of thefour flyaway racesoutside Europe, theWorld Championshipenters its European leg herein Barcelona this weekend

    At the topof the list thisyear is McLaren,thanks to JensonButton bringing the numberone with him after winning the titlewith Brawn last season. The teamlooked good toward the end of wintertesting, and its clever F-Duct system which helps reduce drag by stalling the rearwing gave rivals plenty of food for thought.

    However, the team seemed to be a little off thefront-running pace at the start of the season,although Button scored a brilliant win in only hissecond race for them in that dramatic wet encounter inAustralia. Few expected Jenson to show well againstLewis Hamilton this year, but the victory showed that he isnot to be underestimated, and was a huge boost to hisconfidence. Jenson won here last year of course, butHamilton is still looking for his first Barcelona victory. Hefinished second in 2007, and third the following year.

    After being on the road for several weeks theteams have finally had a chance to get back tobase and catch their breath. Significantly, thisfirst European race traditionally sees all teams

    introduce a major package of updates, one that willdetermine where they stand in the pecking order for atleast the next few races.

    It is a particularly important weekend for three newteams, all of whom had very little time to get ready for thestart of the season. They have all had long job lists withwhich to catch up, and they are also appearing here forthe first time with their new cockpit-mounted wing mirrorsafter most drivers complained about a lack of rear visionin Australia.

    All the teams with the exception of late starters HRT were here for testing in February. Although some of therunning was lost to rain, it did give everyone a goodbaseline set-up with which to start this weekend.

    The key will be how the Bridgestone tyres behave, andwhat impact that has on how the race unfolds. Barcelonahas traditionally been a venue that works the tyres hard,and we could well see a two-stop strategy finding favourup and down the pitlane.

    So who is going to win this weekend? Things are sotight at this early stage of the season that it is safer to rundown the teams in strict number order than predict whomight be at the front!

  • McLaren has won this race eight times since 1975, includinga hat-trick for Mika Hkkinen in 19982000. However, even that

    achievement was bettered by Michael Schumacher, who won fourtimes between 2001 and 2004, each year from pole position.Schumacher has a great record here at Barcelona, winning sixraces in total, and sitting on pole seven times. Indeed he scoredhis first victory for Ferrari at this venue in 1996.

    Now he is back, and Mercedes GP will be hoping that the latestupdates will give the team the edge it has been lacking.Schumacher has not been entirely happy with the car or the lack ofgrip provided by this years smaller front tyres. He has been givena hard time too by team-mate Nico Rosberg, who has reallystepped up to the challenge of taking on the seven times WorldChampion, and it has done his reputation no harm at all.

    Mercedes triumphed here under the Brawn name in 2009, on aday when Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel finished third andfourth for Red Bull Racing. At that stage we were just starting to

    appreciate how competitive Red Bull team was becoming. Oneyear later, the team is regarded by many as the title favourite for 2010.

    Unfortunately Sebastian Vettel did not get off his title challengeto a great start, losing wins to an engine problem in Bahrain, and aloose wheel in Australia. Clearly those points could have provedvery costly had he not won in Malaysia. His team-mate MarkWebber had an equally frustrating start to the season, but hecannot be counted out, and put in a great drive here last year.

    Guessing the winner might be hard, but we can be pretty surewho will get the lions share of the crowds support this weekend.Fernando Alonso has been the focal point here since his debutwith Minardi in 2001, and he always seems to get the job done infront of his Spanish fans.

    In fact he has finished in the top five in each of the last sevenyears, taking five podiums and scoring a popular win in 2006 withRenault. He started this year by winning in Bahrain, and it is

  • already obvious that Alonso/Ferrari is a dreamcombination. Can he add to Ferraris record totalof 11 wins in the Spanish race since the firstsuccess in 1954?

    Fernandos flying start has not made life anyeasier for Felipe Massa, who hasbounced back from last years injury ingreat style, only to find himself withperhaps the toughest team-mate inthe pit lane. Do not forget that Felipewon here in 2007, and was runner-up the year after that, so he knowswhat it takes to be quick here. Lastseason he finished fifth after slowingto save fuel.

    Williams has won the Grand Prix inSpain on six occasions, the most recentbeing in 1997 with Jacques Villeneuve. Thisyear the team is led by Rubens Barrichello, who finishedsecond last year, and has been a Barcelona podiumregular over the years. The Brazilian is finding life a littleharder than it was with Brawn, but the Williams has at least been aregular top-ten contender. Team-mate Nico Hlkenberg is in hisfirst Spanish Formula 1 race, but like all five 2010 rookies on thisyears grid, he knows the track well from GP2.

    There is of course no Alonso at Renault this year, but the teamhas an able replacement in the shape of Robert Kubica. The Polishdriver had a low-key season with BMW in 2009, but he remindedus of his true potential when he took an excellent second place inAustralia. The car still lacks a bit of qualifying pace, but Kubicaalways takes any chance going. Team-mate Vitaly Petrov is on asteep learning curve, but has showed some signs of promise,especially dicing hard with Lewis Hamilton in Malaysia.

    Force India made huge strides in the course of last season, andthat momentum has carried on into this year. From the start theteam has been a top-ten contender in both qualifying and races,and Vitantonio Liuzzi has put in some good drives and boosted his

    reputation. Adrian Sutilwill be keen to make upfor last year, when he was involved in a first-corner crash.

    This will be a big weekend for ScuderiaToro Rossos Jaime Alguersuari, who iscompeting in his first Grand Prix in Spain at the age ofjust 20. He had some idea of what to expect in Valencialast year, but the fans here are much more vocal, and he hasbecome better known to the public since then. He impressedby holding off Schumacher in Australia, but we should not

    forget that he is still finding his way in Formula 1, as is team-mate Sbastien Buemi.

    The Lotus name has a great history in Spain, with the likes ofEmerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti winning at Montjuich Parkand Jarama, and the last of the teams six Spanish victories wasachieved by Ayrton Senna back in 1986. The new incarnationof the squad is not going to add to that tally in the short term,but there is no doubt that it carries some of the spirit of theoriginal. Jarno Trulli was third here in both 2004 and 2005 withToyota, but this year he will be happy just to see thechequered flag, while Heikki Kovalainen was seventh on hisdebut with Renault three years ago.

    Last June the FIA awarded a 2010 entry spot toCampos Meta, but founder and former Formula 1 racerAdrian Campos struggled to get it up and running.Over the winter there were a lot of organisationalchanges before the team emerged in Bahrainunder its new Hispania Racing identity. HRT isnevertheless still the first team to fly the Spanishflag, so it should get some good support thisweekend. Rookies Bruno Senna and KarunChandhok know they have to be patient,but they will be hoping to at least see thechequered flag.

    BMW Sauber is not of course a new team, but itslipped down the 2010 entry list when it had to re-enter the Championship at the end of last year. Without BMWsupport, the team has downsized, and thus far it has not lived up tothe promise of winter testing. The presence of Pedro de la Rosameans that the Swiss outfit will get a lot of local support, whileKamui Kobayashi is making his first Spanish Formula 1 start.

    Last but not least is the Virgin Racing team. Technical issuesmean that it has been a fraught start to the season for the newoutfit, but since China it has finally had time to catch up withdevelopment, so hopefully reliability has been addressed. TimoGlock has not had much luck here on previous appearances inSpain, while Lucas di Grassi is continuing to learn the ropes.

  • For the fourth year, DHL will once againbe awarding their Fastest Lap Trophy tothe driver who attains the greatestnumber of fastest laps during the Grand

    Prix season.The contest for the 2009 DHL Fastest LapTrophy was in fact only decided on thepenultimate lap of the seasons final Grand Prix,in Abu Dhabi, when Sebastian Vettel posted thefastest lap of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit.He secured victory in the overall standingsahead of Red Bull Racing team-mate MarkWebber, who had been in the lead at the start of the race.

    At the chequered flag, both drivers had eachset three fastest laps, which meant that thenumber of second fastest laps had now to betaken into account. The young German driverwas in front on this score by three to one.Sebastian himself was delighted with hissuccess, saying: I am very pleased.     TheMcLaren MP4-25 looked like the fastest car formuch of pre-season testing, and while the early racesshowed that Red Bull has an edge, the silver car isperhaps the major threat. It will no doubt get faster as

    the teams R&D kicks in. Jenson Buttons superb win in thewet/dry race in Australia was a major boost, while LewisHamilton showed his usual flair while chasing through the fieldboth in Australia and Malaysia. The team has a clear straight-line speed advantage, thanks to the cars controversial F-Ductsystem. A bit like KERS last year, it makes the cars harder toovertake.

    CHINA RACE UPDATEMcLaren looked strong from the start of practice, and Lewis Hamiltonimpressed by topping both opening-qualifying sections, but when itmattered he slipped to sixth, a place behind Jenson Button. Button madea brilliant call at the start of the race, staying on dry tyres while othersmade what proved to be a fruitless switch to intermediates. He passedRosberg for the lead on lap 19 and stayed there to the finish. Hamiltonlost ground with his early tyre change but fought back in great style to beon Jensons tail at the flag, despite badly worn tyres.

    CHINA RACE UPDATEMercedes scored a victory over McLaren in qualifying when Nico Rosbergtook fourth, ahead of the other silver cars. Michael Schumacher was lesshappy with his car, and was back in ninth. Rosberg moved into the leadwhen Alonso, Vettel and Webber pitted on lap two and by staying outremained in the lead until lap 18. He lost out to both McLarens, but stillmanaged an encouraging third at the finish. Schumacher lost time with abad early tyre call and thereafter struggled to hold others off, although hefought as hard as he could on the way to a lowly 10th.

    At 41 Michael Schumacher is back in the headlines in 2010after three years in retirement. We never thought we would seehim at the wheel again, but the chance to rejoin Ross Brawn atMercedes was clearly too good an opportunity to miss. No onewas expecting miracles, least of all Michael, and it will take himtime to get back to where he was.     When Nico Rosberg signed for what was then still known asthe Brawn GP team he fully expected Jenson Button to be histeam-mate, and instead he found himself joined by perhaps thegreatest driver of all time. It is a huge challenge for Rosberg,but he has responded in the best way possible by proving hispoint on the track, and in the early races he outpacedSchumacher. He earned his first front-row spot in wet qualifyingin Malaysia, and turned that into a solid third place in the race.If the car improves he can be a race winner in 2010.

    CHINA RACE UPDATERed Bull struggled more than usual to get up to speed, but when it reallymattered in final qualifying Sebastian Vettel pulled out a fast lap and tookanother pole position, ahead of Mark Webber. Both men were beatenaway by the jump-starting Alonso, and both then tumbled down the orderafter their second-lap pit stops, during which Webber hit the front jackand Vettel was delayed. After that it was a struggle for both me to getserious points, but the German eventually made it back to sixth while histeam-mate had to settle for eighth.
