SEARCH CONTINUES: Former Cheshire de tective DaveEdgar is helping in the search for Madeleine McCann, inset. JK150107PRESSCON-010

A FORMERNorthwich de-tective is helping Gerryand Kate McCann in thesearch for their missingdaughter Madeleine.

Ex-Det Insp Dave Edgar, whohas more than 30 years ex-perience with Cheshire PoliceandtheRUC (Royal Ulster Con-

    stabulary), is leading theprobe.

He was involved in the in-quiries into the Warringtonmurders ofGarry Newlove andschoolgirl Shafilea Ahmed.

He and fellow retired detect-ive Arthur Cowley believe fiveseparate sightings of a suspi-cious man could holdthekey tosolving the mystery ofMadeleines disappearance.

Three witnesses saw an oddstranger looking at her fam-ilys holiday apartment inPraia da Luz, Portugal, in thedays before Maddy went miss-

ing more than two years ago.The former policemen have

put the previously-unreportedaccounts together with twobetter-known sightings of aman carrying a child awayfrom the flat on the nightMadeleine vanished.

Their theory, revealed in arecent Channel4 documentary,is that someone was watchingthe Mc-Canns apart-ment for upto a week be-fore the littlegirl disap-peared.

Mr Edgarsaid it wasmost likelyMadeleinewas taken byone person. But he doesnot believeMadeleinewas taken atrandom.

He said: Inmy experi-ence random doesnt happen.A passer-by doesnt go in andpick up a child and take it.

These things are planned. Thisoffence happened in Praia daLuz. And thats where I thinkthe answer is.

Kate McCann believes the re-cent flurry of media attentionwill help in the search forMadeleine.
