What is the purpose of an assessment?
I have all of this data, now what do I do with it?
How can we use assessments to guide and direct our instruction?
TESTING SCORES

Effective teaching moments are shaped by insight. This is the purpose and the power of good assessment.
Renaissance Learning
How we use STAR Assessment results to aide in content instruction.
How do I get from reviewing the results of the STAR assessments to determining what the students in my classroom need?
What is STAR?
What resources are available once I have the data? What about the nonfiction aspects of reading?
Renaissance Learning
How do I get to the results?
Customized assessments
Projected performance on state assessments
What is a STAR Assessment?
Computer-adaptive testing in the classroom (progress monitoring)
STAR Reading test takes about 15-20 minutes
Customizable to test specific or desired standards (STAR Custom) [Can be taken as often as once a week throughout the school year, if needed to measure progress on specific skills]
National Norm Referenced Assessment that provides scaled scores and National Percentile Rankings
Immediate Feedback
The Reading Dashboard is a convenient place to find the data from STAR
Reading Assessments.
Growth and AchievementThis can be displayed by individual
student performance, class performance, or group
performance.
Student/Classroom GrowthThis shows performance of student on Star Assessment or the average of class or group performance on
assessments.
Comparable GrowthThis displays how the student or
classroom performed against school, district, or national levels. If
you have chosen an individual student, it shows how he/she
performed with the average of the class as well.
Instructional DiagnosticsThis shows performance of student on Star Assessment or the average
of class performance on assessments.
AR Quiz PerformanceThis shows average AR Test
performance. Orange is individual practice; while the blue is the instruction
average performance from AR 360.
AR Points/Minutes ReadThis shows how many AR points (orange) and total minutes read
(black) accumulated throughout the school year and compares it with
class and nation.
Total % of NonfictionThe orange shows what percentage of AR reading was nonfiction. The blue
is the percentage of nonfiction instructional reading with AR 360.
ZPD LevelThis compares the selected group or
individual’s Zone of Proximal Development with the levels of
reading the group or student has tested on.
Practice DiagnosticsShows group performance in
comprehension, Pace to reaching yearly AR Points, nonfiction reading,
and reading within ZPD level.
Group SetsGreen students are achieving

just below BenchmarksYellow students are achieving
below Benchmarks and should be placed in interventions
Red students are achieving well below Benchmarks and need
immediate and intensive interventions
Practice DiagnosticsIndividual student performance in comprehension, Pace to reaching
yearly AR Points, nonfiction reading, and reading within ZPD level.
Growth Planning orLearning Progression
This shows what the student is ready to work on next to progress
to succeed at the next level of comprehension.
DomainsThese are the areas that are
addressed and the level at which they are ready to be introduced to.
These also include the standards that address the skills.
Teachable OrderThese standards appear in the
order suggested to teach students.
Skill DetailsDescribes the skill area and the
standard that addresses the skill.
ResourcesTheses are the resources
developed, provided, and created for practice in the chosen skill along
with the number of resources provided.
Type of ResourceVarious avenues to perfect the
