Literal organization of the essay (that is, the layout of paragraphs):

TITLE IN ALL CAPS

I. Part 1 is context setting where you include sufficient background information about the topic you chose, its relevance to the specified-audience and to society, and the introduction of pertinent ideas and definition of terms.

II. The succeeding paragraphs is your development of your essay (rhetorical moves applied based on the structure of your argument which is fitted for your topic)

III. The last part is how you want to end your paper or concluding remarks which is what you want your audience to take home with them (e.g. advocacy building, reflective insight, reiteration of relevance to society by tie-ups, etc.)

Internal content of your paper (that is, the argument structure—what I call the “hidden Mickey”):

The components of the argument structure should be complete but how you present it may vary depending on your mode of defense (rational/non-rational; hard/soft evidence and ) persuasive strategy (deductive/inductive, emotive, satire, etc.)

There is no single mode or procedure to defend or attack an argument, it depends on the topic and the context of the topic.

Expected parts of your argument should include the following (refer to the two “Power Points” discussed in class):

1) Issue2) Claim3) Dialectical structure

• The writer’s analysis of the issues (his/her evaluations of the claims, evidence, assumptions, hidden argument and inherent contradictions) leads the writer to champion one perspective of the subject at hand, even though reasonable, thoughtful, and intelligent people advocate different perspectives.

4) Evidence (includes exemplification that is “researched data”)5) Opposing claims 6) Refutation strategies

For model position papers and analysis of them: Dadufalza, C. (1996). Reading into writing 2. Makati City, Philippines: Bookmark

Reminders regarding the format for Comm2 classes’ Argumentative Research Papers:

• Minimum length of each paper is (1, 200 words) but there is no limit to the maximum number of words (I will base the grade primarily on “overall” quality rather than length).

• Apply TNR 11.

• Line spacing ─ for traditional headings use 1.5 lines (new paragraphs are indicated only by indentions) ─ for decimal headings use single space (new paragraphs are indicated by an additional

space)

• Apply 1-inch margin in all sides of the paper.

• Use short bond paper.

• Put page numbers on the upper right hand corner of the page.

• Follow layout in this file for the Argumentative Research Paper (PP)

• You may choose to use a topic outline or a sentence outline based on what would be more fitting for your intended objective of your paper --not based on convenience, just take note than I can tell the difference “H-E-L-L-O!”.

• Outlines may be either 2-level (minimum) or 3-level (maximum) traditional outlines/decimal coding outlines (digital outline) --see outline guide Reading into Writing 1 by Dadufalza, page 306-307).

• Since the PP is research-based, bibliographic citation is MANDATED and the format is APA [do not commit prototypical/textual plagiarism].

• You are EXPECTED to use coherence/transitional devices (such as stance markers, grammatical markers, discourse markers, and even rhetorical moves may also function as transitional devices).

Expressions that indicate tone, attitude, or level of commitment to an assertion are considered stance markers, for example: “H-E-L-L-O!”, “in fact”, “perhaps” are stance markers.

• Tables, figure, and bullets are allowed for presentation of data as evidence (e.g. such as statistical tables); but these items should not substitute for the parts of the essay itself.

• AVOID using outline headings, essay headings and expressions in the thesis statement that are generic, I prefer definite, descriptive, and content based headings.

In cases where generic expressions cannot be avoided, add a descriptive phrase to remove the effect of empty categorization; for example:

III. Effects (wrong) III. Positive Effects of Dieting on Overweight People (better – topic heading) III. Healthy dieting improves the self-perception and self-image (even better – sentence heading without any

generic expression)

• Tidiness is also a demonstration of “professionalism”; and this refers to general neatness of presentation but also “paragraph alignments”.
