I(b). Additional General Information

1 Which other government departments are involved in activities/initiatives for the conservation of migratory species in

your country? (Please list.)

• Sector for Forestry, Hunting and Fishing (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy (MAFWE))

• Sector for International Law and Sector of Multilateral [Conventions] (Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA))

• State Agency of International Co-operation (Ministry of Education and Sciences (MES)

• State Statistical Institute in Macedonia (SSIM)

1a If more than one government department is involved, describe the interaction/relationship between these government

departments:

• MFA: the Sector for International Law and the Sector of Multilateral [Conventions] co-ordinate activities for the

implementation of all relevant international conventions in the Republic of Macedonia.

• MAFWE: the Sector of Forestry, Hunting and Fishing co-ordinates activities for the use of bioresources (especially

vertebrate animals).

• MES: the State Agency of International Co-operation co-ordinates scientific research, the information network, and

educational activities for schools and the public.

• SSIM co-ordinates inventories and all statistical databases.

2 List the main non-governmental organizations actively involved in initiatives for the conservation of migratory species in

your country, and describe their involvement:

• The Bird Study and Protection Society of Macedonia (BSPSM) is involved in initiatives for studying and protecting

birds and their habitats. It also monitors the ornithological reserve Ezerani and maintains the first information centre

for Ezerani in the village of Asamati on Prespa Lake.

• BIOECO is involved in programmes and projects for the conservation of other migratory species, especially bats.

• The Macedonian Forum for the Protection of Animal Species is involved in projects for the conservation of fish (in

rivers and lakes ecosystems).

3 Describe any involvement of the private sector in the conservation of migratory species in your country:

The Ford Foundation (Ford Motor Company Conservation and Environmental Grants) has an office in Skopje.

4 Note any interactions between these sectors in the conservation of migratory species in your country:

II. Appendix I species

1. BIRDS

1.1 General questions on Appendix I bird species

1 Identify the Ministry, agency/department, or organisation responsible for leading actions relating to Appendix I bird

species:

• Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning (MEPP)

• Agency of Environment (AE)

• Department of Biodiversity (DBD)

• Bird Study and Protection Society of Macedonia (BSPSM)

2 Is the taking of all Appendix I bird species prohibited by the national implementing Yes No

legislation cited in Table I(a) (General Information)?

If other legislation is relevant, please provide details:

2a If the taking of Appendix I bird species is prohibited by law, have any exceptions Yes No

been granted to the prohibition?

If Yes, please provide details (Include the date on which the exception was notified to the CMS Secretariat pursuant to

CMS Article III(7)):

3 Identify any obstacles to migration that exist in relation to Appendix I bird species:

Capture and artificial accumulations on rivers (Crn Drim, Crna Reka, Stara Reka, etc.). They are a big problem

for the natural migration of fish species. Drainage of wetlands like Katlanovo, Aracinovo, Pelagonija, etc.

Cutting higher plants and trees near Vardar River and other wetlands in Macedonia. They have been natural

habitats for many migratory water bird species (nesting and roosting sites).

3a What actions are being undertaken to overcome these obstacles?

The Department of Biodiversity of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning (MEPP), in co-operation

with scientific experts from the Macedonian Committee for CMS (MBC), has studied the migration routes. Several

projects have also been planned for the restoration of many important wetlands and other natural habitats.

3b What assistance, if any, does your country require in order to overcome these obstacles?

Financial assistance and scientific equipment.

4 What actions have been taken to prevent, reduce or control factors that are endangering or are likely to further endanger

bird species, including strictly controlling the introduction of, or controlling or eliminating, already introduced exotic

species (Article III(4)(c))?

No actions have been taken.

4a Describe any factors that may limit action being taken in this regard:

4b What assistance, if any, does your country require to overcome these factors?

Financial assistance and scientific equipment.
