News/Talk Programs
Depending on station it DJ’s will talk about local, national or global news.
Feature talk programs. Live Sports Coverage – like Steve
Kaplowitz. Having a variety of all three is called
a “Full Service Format.” Can be found now on the AM dial or
on Internet, or satellite TV.
Different Programs
News: Have very little call ins. Sports: sports news, talk shows and
of course live coverage of both local and national sporting events.
Financial Programs Farm/Agriculture: Update on financial
livestock and crop prices. Political.
Writing the Script
Keep it Simple For a news program or straight
sports talk your opinion does not matter. Same goes with a commercial.
Formats to keep in mind
Use ANNCR when ever you need an announcer to say something. Or when you need a narrator.
Use a – (double dash) whenever you want a pause.
Capitalize speaking characters on the left column and what they say on the right.
Time your script when you are done writing it.
In Class Exercise
Select a 20 to 30 second radio commercial. (You can find these on Youtube)
Listen to it a couple of times. Then using one of the radio formats,
write the script for the commercial.
Homework
• Due Tuesday: Select a 30 second radio ad or part of a talk show and write the script for it. Remember to read it aloud and time yourself to be
sure it’s 30 seconds. Due Tuesday: Start working on your midterm –
Select a front page story from the newspaper/TV news. From the story format an idea for an ad, PSA or short script. For your midterm (Due Thursday) You will use
your idea and write it for the radio, TV and the Internet.
