FORMA QUALITY MEANS MAXIMUM PROTECTIONEveryday, over 500,000 laboratory workers around the world routinely handle hazardous biological materials. The primary persons at risk of acquiring an infection from the aerosols produced by most laboratory procedures are the laboratory workers themselves. But the risk can extend to students, custodial and maintenance workers who enter laboratories, handlers of shipped materials, sanitation workers, and all who work in or pass through buildings adjacent to the laboratories.

Biological safety cabinets are the primary containment devices used in laboratories to prevent the escape of aerosols and to provide protection for personnel, products, and the environment. When used with good microbiological techniques, Class II biological safety cabinets provide effective partial containment of airborne contaminants.

Established in 1950, Forma Scientific has grown to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of controlled environment laboratory equipment, including biological safety cabinets. Ongoing research, innovative technology, and proven performance have enabled Forma to design and manufacture one of the most reliable lines of NSF Listed biological safety cabinets available to you today.

CABINET CLASSIFICATIONS

Biological safety cabinet classifications are defined in NSF Standard 49. Class II refers to ventilated cabinets with open fronts that use inwardairflow for personnel protection, HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtered downward laminar airflow for product protection, and HEPAfiltered exhausted air for environmental protection. Class II cabinets are available in the following configurations.

THEORY OF OPERATIONAll biological safety cabinets contain HEPA filters for entrapment of extraneous airborne particulates or aerosols. HEPA filters are constructedof a continuous sheet of submicron glass fibers folded back and forth over corrugated spacers that position and support the filter media.Forma Biological Safety Cabinets have front-loading HEPA filters that are zero probed and rated 99.99% efficient for 0.3 micron particulates.Optional ULPA (Ultra Low Penetration Air) filters, rated at 99.999% efficient for 0.12 micron particulates, are available.

CLASS II, TYPE A CABINETSIn Forma’s Class II, Type A cabinets, the airflow descends from the top of the cabinetthrough a supply HEPA filter. As this vertical airstream approaches the work surface theairflow splits with approximately 50% being drawn into the cabinet’s rear intake grille andthe rest meeting ambient room air at the front intake grille. The air is drawn into a negativepressure plenum under the work area by the blower located in the bottom of the cabinet. The blower pressurizes this air into a positive pressure plenum to force air to the top of thecabinet. The pressurized air is split, with 30% being exhausted through the exhaust HEPAfilter and the remaining 70% recirculated through the supply HEPA filter. The air beingdrawn into the back and front grilles, combined with the laminar HEPA filtered downflowair, provides a sterile work area and cross contamination protection. The area where roomair and HEPA filtered air meet produces an air barrier that provides personnel and productprotection. The HEPA filtered exhaust air provides environmental protection. Class II,Type A cabinets are suitable for work with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3 inthe absence of volatile toxic chemicals and volatile radionuclides.

CLASS II, TYPE A/B3 CABINETSIn Forma’s Class II, Type A/B3 cabinets, the airflow descends from the top of the cabinet througha supply HEPA filter. As this vertical airstream approaches the work surface the airflow splitswith approximately 50% being drawn into the cabinet’s rear intake grille and the rest meetingambient room air at the front intake grille. The air is then drawn into a plenum surrounding thework area by the blower located in the top of the cabinet. The blower pressurizes this air into apositive pressure plenum. The pressurized air is split, with 30% being exhausted through theexhaust HEPA filter and the remaining 70% recirculated through the supply HEPA filter. The airbeing drawn into the side, back and front grilles, combined with the laminar HEPA filtereddownflow air, provides a sterile work area and cross contamination protection. The area whereroom air and HEPA filtered air meet produces an air barrier that provides personnel and productprotection. The HEPA filtered exhaust air provides environmental protection. Class II, Type B3cabinets may be used with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3 treated with minutequantities of volatile toxic chemicals and tracer amounts of radionuclides required as an adjunct tomicrobiological studies that will not interfere with the work when recirculated in the downflowair.

CLASS II, TYPE B2 CABINETSIn Forma’s Class II, Type B2 biological safety cabinets, room air is pulled into the cabinet bythe blower and pushed through the supply HEPA filter, providing clean unidirectional aironto the work surface. Approximately 50% of this work area air exits through the rear grille. The remaining 50% meets with room air and is pulled into the front intake grille, providing aprotective barrier. The divided downflow and inflow air then combines and is pulled up therear plenum through the exhaust HEPA filter by the facility exhaust system. Class II, TypeB2 cabinets may be used with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3 treated withvolatile toxic chemicals and radionuclides required as an adjunct to microbiological studies.

FORMA ADVANTAGES: PROTECTION,PERFORMANCE, AND CONVENIENCEForma Biological Safety Cabinets are recognized for their quality, safety, performance, and dependability. We design and manufacture ourcabinets to exceed minimum specifications defined by NSF Standard 49 and to simplify maintenance procedures. Forma Biological SafetyCabinets incorporate many unique design features to provide maximum personnel, product, and environment protection; reliable performance;and customer convenience.

EXCLUSIVE PRODUCT FEATURES

FORMA CLASS II, TYPE A CABINETS

♦ For personnel protection, air is pulled into the 4.0" (10.2cm) wide intake grille. This air meets the uniform, downward, HEPA filtered airand keeps unfiltered air out of the work area. Exceptional product protection is achieved because the directed airflow minimizes thechance of cross contamination along the work surface. High velocity momentum air curtains are not required.

♦ Forma's Vortex Channels (U.S. Patent 5,295,902) create high velocity air at the window corners to inhibit the escape of particulates. Thedownward, HEPA filtered air behind the viewscreen meets the multi-directional inward flowing air. This multi-directional air at the cornersof the window opening can create turbulence, which increases the risk of particulates escaping from or entering the cabinet work area. OurVortex Channels, located at each end of the intake grille, provide high velocity air that sweeps the turbulent air into the return air systembefore it reaches the work area. Product and personnel protection are increased.

♦ Reliable, rocker style switcheson the control panel are easy to use. Independent service organizations have indicated that customersprefer our control panel design because it is easy to use and inexpensive to replace if service is required. Microprocessor controls used byother manufacturers can cost hundreds of dollars to replace if a problem occurs.

♦ The blower continues to operate when the sliding window is closed.Thisfeature lowers the ambient sound level and saves setup time while keeping thework area purged and ready for immediate use. Other manufacturers’ blowersautomatically shut off when the window is closed.

FORMA CLASS II, TYPE A /B3 CABINETS

Unique features of Forma Type A/B3 Models include all of those listed for Type Aplus the following.

♦ Return air slots, located just above the work surface on each side wall, provide increased sample cross contamination protection. Forma Scientific isthe only manufacturer to offer this additional sample protection.

♦ Dual-wall construction design allows us to surround the entire work area witha negative pressure air plenum. This design feature provides the followingbenefits: an added measure of safety to the environment; return air slots forenhanced sample cross contamination protection; sturdy, aestheticallyappealing units; and the ability to locate all utility plumbing connections insidethe wall where they are out of the way and out of sight.

♦ Forma Biological Safety Cabinets feature an all-metal, positive pressure plenum(enclosed within negative pressure air) with a patented hook and loop connection(U.S. Patent 6,036,737) to the exhaust damper. This unique design accommodates quick and easy filter changes for lower maintenance costs. All maintenance functions, including HEPA filter replacement, can be performed from the front of the biological safety cabinet. Positivefeedback from certification companies attests to the success of Forma's innovative plenum attachment system.

♦ Forma Type A/B3 Cabinets can handle a 100% increase in filter loading without adjustment and at least a 230% increase in filterloading with voltage and damper adjustments, while still maintaining 90% of the total CFM.

FORMA CLASS II, TYPE B2 CABINETS

♦ Each Forma Type B2 Biosafety Cabinet features 12.0" (30.5cm) supply air intake and exhaust ducts with adjustable, zero leakdampers for connection to in-house systems.
