Safety in falsework and formwork
Definition
Formwork is the section of the temporary works
used to give the required shape and support to
poured concrete

Carry out as much work as possible at low level.
Fabricate column cages at low level
Support cage on adequately strength trestles at waistheight.
This prevents potential fall hazards and reduces the need
for steel fixers to repeatedly bend etc. causingmusculoskeletal problems.
The cage can then be lifted into position by a crane.
Temporary props may be required until the splices are tied

Scaffold with edge protection to both work face and outer edge must be provided,
where cages have to be built in-situ
Scaffold top 3 sides minimum with edge protection to
work and outer face
Note gap not to
be left excessive
so fixer has to
stretch.

Three types of column shutters are in normal use.
Proprietary bespoke shutters
Proprietary systems
Traditional timber

Sheet shutters with integral working platform andpropping systems.
Advantages:
quick to use
provide good quality concreting platform
purpose designed lifting points
reduce the potential for working of ladders
To maximise their use and be cost effective, thestandardisation of column sizes must take place at designstage.

The shutter normally come in two halves, either
semicircular or two adjacent faces at right angles.
Once placed and temporarily propped, the two halves are
bolted together from a tower scaffold if space allows If space is not available, bolting up may take place of a
footed / tied ladder with the use of a secured harness.
The shutters are then re-plumbed and the top work
platform lifted into place.

Pre-fabricate as much as practical at ground level to reducethe need to work at height.
As with the proprietary systems scaffolds should be usedfor access to join sections together.
Lifting of timber shutters has in the past caused majorinjuries where the lifting points have failed.
It is therefore essential that any lifting points are designedin and checked by a BLL temporary works engineer.

Same principles apply for column construction
Reinforcement and shutters should be prefabricate onground and lifted into position where possible
Properly constructed scaffolds with safe access and doubleguardrail edge protection to work face must be providedwhen constructing insitu
Where proprietary shutter systems with in built concretingplatforms are used then stop ends must be provided andadequate protection must be provided to the work face,i.e. a secondary scaffold on the opposite side to theworking platform.

Workers must not work on top of walls. The top of walls must be 910mm abovethe work platform or edge protection must be provided to the outer side of the
wall.

A lifting plan must be in place for the lifting and reinforcementand shutters.
Use the lifting points provided when using proprietary systems
Each shutter should be examined immediately prior to lifting to
ensure lifting points are adequate sound and un-damaged.
Safe means of access for hooking and unhooking shutters mustbe implemented.
Where traditional form work is used, ensure that lifting points
are designed in and the design checked by a BLL temporaryworks engineer.
Tag lines should be used to control shutters during lifts, whichmust not take place in windy conditions.

Establish a striking sequence, back propping requirementsetc.
Provide suitable work platform and protection against falls
Remove all loose material / fittings before dismantlingbegins
Move dismantled materials directly to storage areas
Projecting nails
Replace guardrails formed on falsework / formwork withothers fitted to concrete edge
All openings securely covered and guarded

Use correct slings and slinging techniques
DO NOT lift using the binding wire
Ensure a safe place of work for steel fixers
Create an exclusion zone around areas where rebar is beinghandled
Correct storage to prevent double handling, preventing
musculo-skeletal injuries, trapped fingers etc.
Rebar should be cut in an approved manner, operatives
wearing safety eyewear and gloves

Disc cutters may only be used by trained and authorisedpersonnel
Cutting torches must NOT be used on rebar
Bar bending machines should be adequately fenced Where bar croppers are used, take precautions to ensure
that the cut off end of the bar does not fly off
All projecting steel should be capped or boxed over to
prevent injury
