DERIDDER, La. — Soldiers from2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regi-ment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team,10th Mountain Division presentedChristmas presents to students atK.R. Hanchey Elementary School inDeRidder Dec. 19.

First Lt. Juaquin Muna, a platoonleader assigned to Delta Company, coordinated the event in whichWild Boar Soldiers across the battal-ion collected presents for 36 stu-dents.

“Last year we did this for stu-dents at Many Elementary, so thisyear we wanted to keep the tradi-

tion going,” Muna said. “Wereached out to the principal at K.R.Hanchey and she helped us identifystudents who were in need.”

Muna enlisted the help of reardetachment Soldiers to collect dona-tions for purchasing gifts. A limitwas set for each student to ensurethat the holiday cheer was distrib-uted evenly.

“We were so excited when we re-ceived the call,” said Teresa Parm-ley, K.R. Hanchey principal. “Ourparents were crying tears of joywhen we called them. They werevery grateful for the generosity ofthese Soldiers.”

WASHINGTON — Starting early next year, of-ficers looking for a new calling may discover oneas  marketers.  The  Army’s  latest  functional  areabegan selecting eligible Soldiers recently and theapplication process will run through Jan. 19.

“The  creation  of  FA  58  (Army  marketing)  al-lows the service to acquire, develop, employ andretain  the  marketing  talent  needed  to  deliver  acutting-edge marketing capability commensuratewith  one  of  the  nation’s  largest  brands  —  theU.S. Army,”  said  Dr.  E.  Casey  Wardynski,  assis-tant  secretary  of  the  Army  for  Manpower  andReserve Affairs.

Eligible officers are required to have prior ex-perience in a basic branch, along with marketingknowledge  and  experience.  The  Army  plans  toselect 100 officers for FA 58 in the next five to sixyears,  said  Maj.  Aaron  Stark,  FA  58  programmanager.

Positions  are  available  for  officers  from  cap-tain  to  colonel  with  the  requisite  skills  and/oreducational  background,  regardless  of  basicbranch or current functional area.

Soldiers  must  exhibit  a  history  of  excellenceduring their  initial service years, Stark said, andhave  either  private-sector  experience  in  market-ing or an MBA or marketing-related graduate de-gree from a top-tier program that demonstrates asimilar academic foundation.

“(The  requirements)  help  officers  turn  strate-gic  concepts  into  effective  messaging  that  com-municates the Army brand and the value propo-sition of Army service,” he said.

Once selected, officers will learn the marketingtrade with military and industry partners.

Marketing officers will  then go on  to serve  inleadership  positions  on  projects  at  Army  Enter-prise  Marketing,  in  Chicago,  Illinois,  or  in  sup-port of various accessions-related commands.

In  addition  to  being  a  first-rate  officer,  Starksaid,  interested  candidates  must  also  demon-

strate  a  comprehensive  understanding  of  Armyoperations  and  the  value  proposition  of  Armyservice. This  includes — but  is not  limited  to —understanding  the  benefits,  hardships,  realitiesand unique experiences that are rooted in being aSoldier, he said.

Ideal  marketing  officers  “imagine  solutionsbeyond  unconventional  ways  of  thinking,”  hesaid,  and  must  be  visually  creative,  unafraid  tobe  imaginative,  and  not  be  bound  by  templatesor tradition.

Young marketing officers — selected as a sen-ior captain to junior major — will generally startat  the Army's  marketing  headquarters  in  Chica-go,  Illinois.  It’s  there  they  will  work  as  an  ap-prentice  on  a  marketing  engagement  team  andlearn the ropes, according to a news release.

After  that, various options are available. Offi-cers may move to a regional office supporting theU.S.  Army  Recruiting  Command,  U.S.  ArmyCadet  Command  or  the  United  States  MilitaryAcademy at West Point, New York

As  a  regional  associate,  Soldiers  will  take  onlocal challenges  tailored to  their specific market,Stark  said.  Then,  as  they  progress  as  marketingofficers,  and  the  career  field  expands,  more  ca-reer options will, too.

Soldiers  will  learn  and  specialize  in  multiplemarketing roles, Stark said, and work holisticallywith  cross-functional  marketing  teams  to  solvevarious challenges.

Typical  projects  start  with  officers  workingshoulder-to-shoulder  with  industry  partners  todevelop strategies and manage the Army brand. This  cross-functional  job  identifies  and  classifies

market segments. Once a new strategy is developed, it turns into

a marketing campaign and moves on  to  includecreative  content.  After  the  campaign  content  isready,  marketing  officers  then  identify  the  bestmedium for it.

After the best channels are identified based onlocal considerations,  the content  is delivered. Fi-nally, the marketing team will analyze data afterit’s  delivered,  and  inform  leaders  of  futurechanges to the strategy.

“The unique experiences of both Soldiers andmarketing experts will ensure FA 58 officers pos-sess  an  integral  understanding  of  Army  opera-tions  and  the  value  proposition  of  service  in  or-der  to create, analyze and  lead Army marketingstrategy and execution,” Wardynski said.

Eligible Soldiers looking for a change to reclas-sify into FA 58 should contact [email protected]  or  get  more  informationthrough the Army's MILPER postings website atwww.hrc.army.mil/milper.

This is the first year that a groupof Soldiers reached out to Parmleyto coordinate this type of eventsince she has been the principal atK.R. Hanchey.

Staff and teachers at the schoolreached out to parents to see whocould use some assistance this year

in ensuring their children had amemorable Christmas.

“This time of the year can be verystressful on parents,” Muna said.“All it takes is a phone call and a lit-tle coordination with a local schoolin your community to help spreadholiday cheer.”

FORT POLK, La. — Sgt. JohnAretz, Headquarters and Headquar-ters Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th In-fantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Com-bat Team, 10th Mountain Division, competed in his first classicphysique competition Sept. 28 andfinished in second place in thenovice class as well as second placein the open class.

The novice class is for first timeamateur competitors and the openclass is for everyone, regardless ofprofessional status. Aretz hadplanned on competing after the2018 Iraq deployment with 2-4 In-fantry, however, due to the missionand high operational tempo therewas never really a good time tomake an attempt.

But Artez said he caught a breakwith this competition.

“Luckily, I was tasked as theClinic NCOIC for 2-4 Inf Reg andwas left on rear detachment for theSouthwest Border Mission allowingme to focus on training and nutri-tion with my coach,” he said.

Aretz was coached by centralLouisiana physique coach DustyHayman who has been competingand coaching for more than 20years. Aretz had glowing reviewsfor his coach.

“Dusty really helped me reachmy full potential, and is militaryfriendly,” he said. “That allowed me

to train hard and not focus on the fi-nancial aspect of hiring a top tiercoach.”

Aretz plans on competing againin May where he hopes to qualifyfor his national physique committeecard which will ultimately allowhim to compete for an InternationalFederation of Bodybuilders procard. Aretz is unsure if he will con-tinue his service in the Army, how-ever, he said if he re-enlists, heplans to become an 18D, special op-erations medic. Aretz is working to-wards becoming a physical therapyassistant at Houston CommunityCollege and will be getting marriedto his fiancé, Shelby David, in 2020.
