Forging Connections, Fulfilling Needs, Fostering Growth Here Comes the Neighborhood!
Dear Friends,At a ceremony in the Fall of 2006 marking the ground-breaking of our new YMCA on the Rockaways, Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff said, “If you want to see a harbinger of where this city is moving, follow the YMCA.”
And it’s true. Since early 2005, one of our top three strategic priorities has been strengthening our presence in New York City’s neighborhoods. In building on the solid foundations we have laid in the areas we serve, our YMCA is reinforcing our commitments, introducing more services and inspiring other neighborhoods to wonder, “When will we have a Y?”
As we enter into a new era of growth that will mark new YMCAs in Ridgewood, the Rockaways and Coney Island, we take a moment to reflect on a particularly productive 2006 for the 4,400 staff and 1,500 volunteers of the YMCA of Greater New York:
We opened the Chinatown YMCA’s first full-service Branch in April, just two blocks from where our Bowery Branch once operated, starting in 1872.
We completed work on the all-new Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA, which is on track to exceed its projected doubling of membership.
We joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in announcing plans for new YMCAs on Coney Island and in the Rockaways.
We launched our New Americans Welcome Centers in Chinatown and Staten Island as a central resource for recent immigrants for language instruction, citizenship application and job skills training.
We opened our second session of Teens Take the City with more than 350 participants ready to make a real difference as leaders in their own communities.
We marked our 10th year of our signature afterschool program Virtual Y, which has served 58,000 kids since 1996. We served a total of 13,400 kids in our after-school programs, more than 2,600 in early childhood programs, 11,035 in our day and sleepaway camps, and 56,019 teens.
We grew our membership over the past two years, with 20,000 new individuals and families choosing the YMCA.

We grew revenue to an unprecedented $130 million, with $4.9 million in net asset growth.
We received $13.6 million in donations from nearly 10,000 generous donors, setting records with a $3.5 million annual Strong Kids Campaign, a $2 million Dodge Award Dinner and a $500,000 Arts & Letters reception and auction.
We gave away $45 million in free or subsidized programs and services to New Yorkers in need.
We celebrated donors who joined our Heritage Society in making the YMCA of Greater New York a part of their estate plans.
We welcomed 10 community leaders to our Board of Directors and newly-formed Board Emeritus.
We continued to build a strong staff, launching our Emerging Leaders program, increasing staff training with 6,500 staff attending 85 trainings. We gauged our staff ’s job satisfaction with a comprehensive culture scan.
We continued to strengthen on our partnership with the City of New York, hosting 37 elected officials or representatives at our second Legislative Breakfast.
Building on our position as the city’s leading youth organi-zation, our YMCA is poised to enter a new era of growth, as we broaden and deepen our agenda for the city that we love. Together, we are working to stay strongly rooted in the heart of our neighborhoods, forging connections, fulfilling needs and fostering growth.
Yours in service,
Barry Salzberg Chair, Board of Directors (2004-07)

Drawing vitality from the neighborhoods it serves, the YMCA is a physical and emotional component of our urban infrastructure, a fixture of healthy, growing commu-nities. The Y is undeniably part of America’s “social capital” and, like any fruitful resource, it requires investment in order to produce anticipated returns. For generations, the YMCA has reliably paid these dividends in the form of strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The YMCA of Greater New York will continue to do so in the 21st century.
This is an inspiring time of YMCA growth and strength in New York City. As a respected human services provider – and increasingly the partner of choice for public- private community development projects – the YMCA is well-positioned to inaugurate a new capital era that will mean more New Yorkers served by Y programs, and in more locations, than ever before in its history. With a proven record of success, the YMCA of Greater New York is poised to enhance its stature as the city’s leading youth organization, to widen its presence in communities throughout all five boroughs, and to be a destination for philanthropists seeking the greatest possible return on their charitable investment.

ridgewood, Queens
In 1965, the YMCA received a generous gift from Queens County – a 35-year-old courthouse nestled near the Brooklyn border at the corner of 64th St. and Catalpa Ave. With minimal updates, the YMCA breathed new life into the place, creating the 18,000 square-foot Catalpa Center YMCA that has been providing early child-hood care, youth sports, day camp and modest health and fitness facilities
and programs to residents of Ridgewood and surround-ing areas.
In the four decades since, the neighborhood has grown to be a welcome haven to New Americans from Eastern Europe and Latin America, looking to provide new opportunities for themselves and their children. Seeking their place in a new, larger community, the Catalpa Center’s offer-ings have served to form a connection – between
individuals, between cultures, between worlds.
At the heart of a community bridging old and new, the old courthouse is poised for a second rebirth. With a full-scale renovation, expan-sion and modernization of the Center, Ridgewood will soon see the Catalpa Center retired in favor of a full-service YMCA Branch on the site, with capacity to serve more than twice the kids and adults.
“I’m a New York City kid, and I grew up in the Y, too. This is a YMCA town. We love the Y and what it does for our children.”Helen MarshallBorough President, Queens

Victor Zamore moved to New York from the tiny Caribbean island of Dominica in the 1970s, met his Ecuadorian-born wife Angela, and they made a life together in Queens. His introduction to the Catalpa YMCA came through a need for health and fitness, particularly weight training. Two years ago, then 1-year-old Sherrard started coming in with his dad, building a relationship they both needed. “When it’s hard, he’s there – ‘come on Dad, come on’ – and I’m there for him, too. The stronger I am, the stronger I can make him. It’s been good to have my son with me and growing with him. We grow together.”

rockaways, Queens
Limited or no access to swimming pools is cited as a chief reason that the drown-ing risk for low-income African American children is 3.2 times higher than for white children, and nowhere is this more evident than on the Rockaways. Despite seven and a half miles of oceanfront shoreline, no pools means no one is teach-ing the peninsula’s 30,000 children how to swim. The
consequences have been fatal: the Daily News called the beaches of the Rocka-ways “the city’s deadliest,” with 14 drownings over the past decade.
With over 100 years in group swim instruction, the YMCA looks to meet this and other needs head-on, with a full-facility Branch on Rockaway Beach Boulevard as part of a larger, 2,400-unit residential development, in
partnership with the Beech-wood Development Co. and the Benjamin Organization.
Further extending the Y’s presence beyond the Virtual Y afterschool sites in PS 197 and PS 256, the new YMCA Branch will be the community center where new residents and old can come together to create a strong sense of neighbor-hood spirit and cohesiveness.
“When it opens in 2008, the YMCA will be the heart of neighborhood life, just like the Ys are and have been throughout the city for more than 150 years. It’s going to make an enormous difference in this community.”Michael r. BloombergMayor, New York City
Fulfilling Needs
draft
PS 197 Parent Coordinator Susie Wilson has wit-nessed the impact the Virtual Y and its enriching environment has had on her own grandkids Nylesha, Cierra and E’naijza. The afterschool program has provided a link for families like the Wilsons to the Y’s larger network of services, such as day camp and swim lessons at the Cross Island YMCA 10 miles up the Parkway. “Living out here we’re used to having to go to great lengths to get our kids what they need. The Y offers so much that we don’t have here. It’ll open a lot of different doors for kids to channel their energy and motivate them to focus on where their lives are going.”

Coney island, Brooklyn
For a century and a half the YMCA has helped individuals grow stronger in spirit, mind and body, one person at a time. Families find cohesiveness and togetherness, kids discover confidence in learning new skills, teens apply them-selves as leaders and agents of positive change to their communities.
The YMCA’s presence is also a catalyst for economic growth, stabilizing neigh-borhoods with capital investment and long-term
jobs. Nowhere is this type of growth more needed than in Coney Island. Once a world-famous destination, its iconic boardwalk is a silent testimony to the area’s economic decline over the past forty years. But there are sure signs of revitaliza-tion as former bungalow neighborhoods become home to one of Brooklyn’s most ethnically and eco-nomically diverse areas.
Making good on a promise to breathe new life into an historic community, Mayor
Bloomberg announced a new 40,000 square-foot YMCA on Surf Avenue as part of a new low-density, affordable housing develop-ment to be built by Coney Island Commons LLC. The full-service YMCA Branch will soon take its place at the heart of the neighborhood as a place for kids, teens and adults of all ages to come together as a community and engage in the healthy, life-affirming and intergen-erational experiences that are the hallmark of the YMCA.
“This project is not only good for Brooklyn and New York City, it’s good for the residents of Coney Island. In Coney Island, we’re bringing hope back. Thank you for making this dream come true.”Marty MarkowitzBorough President, Brooklyn
Fostering Growth
draft
Growing up on the edge of Coney Island, the only YMCA 16-year-old Eric Bland had ever known was the afterschool program at PS 1 in Gravesend, but that doesn’t mean the Y didn’t make a significant mark. He’s back at PS 1 every day, tutoring kids in reading, leading a children’s chorus and even teaching salsa dancing. No surprise he aspires to be a teacher. “A lot of people in Coney Island aren’t involved that much; they pretty much hang around where they live. Hav-ing the Y there will give them a place to get away and enjoy themselves and focus on what they want in life. Coney Island needs a YMCA. It’ll give them hope.”

Strong Kids Campaign
the annual strong Kids Campaign is the cornerstone of our long-
standing commitment to serving everyone who wishes to belong to
the YMCA. Charitable gifts to the 2006 strong Kids Campaign ranging
from $1 to more than $300,000 totaled more than $3.5 million to support
membership scholarships and programs like afterschool, summer camp,
child care and teen clubs. We are grateful to all of our generous donors,
particularly those at the leadership levels listed below.

Heritage Society
the Heritage society creates a legacy for the New York City commu-
nity through immediate and planned endowment gifts. More than 70
Heritage society members know that their charitable gifts will ensure
the YMCA will continue to care for kids and families for generations
to come. We are grateful to these committed supporters who share a
visionary focus on the future.
For information about the benefits – to the YMCA and the donor – of Heritage Society membership, please contact J. Frederick Rogers, Senior Vice President for Fund Develop-ment, at 212-630-9629 or [email protected].

The YMCA of Greater New York offers its programs and services to the community in the belief that no one should be turned away for the inability to pay stated fees. Through its annual Strong Kids Campaign and other fund-raising, the YMCA provides financial assistance for
membership and program participation to meet demonstrated need to the extent of available resources.
