Learning  and  educa2on  •  Learning  underpins  human  society  as  an  essen2al  ac2vity  for  societal    advancement  as  well  as  personal  well-‐being

•  2009  the  European  Union  budget  on  educa2on  was  6.2%  of  the  European  Gross  Domes2c  Product

•  Recent  economy  crash  has  forced  a  reduc2on  in  educa2onal  in  several  countries

•  Innova2ve  solu2ons  to  provision  cost-‐effec2ve  high  quality  learning  are  needed

"FORGE: Enhancing elearning and research in ICT through remote experimentation", Johann M. Marquez-Barja, Guillaume Jourjon, Mikroyannidis Alexander, Christos Tranoris, John Domingue, Luiz A. Engineering  and  experimenta2on  •  To  understand  physics  and  engineering  phenomena,  in  par2cular  wireless  communica2ons  and  its  physical  proper2es,  it  is  of  extremely  importance  to  reinforce  and  to  demonstrate  the  concepts  taught  in  the  lectures

•  The  most  effec2ve  way  to  demonstrate  such  physical  proper2es  and  the  impairments  of  wireless  signals  is  through  radio  laboratories

"Virtualizing testbed resources to enable remote experimentation in online telecommunications education", Johann M. Marquez-Barja, Nicholas Kaminski, Francisco Paisana, Christos Tranoris, Luiz A. DaSilva. IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON15). pp 822-829. March, 2015. Tallinn, Estonia . ISBN 978-1-4799-1907-9/15/.

Engineering  and  experimenta2on

•  Physical  experimentaDon  •  Expensive,  in  par2cular  for  low-‐

budget  ins2tu2ons  •  Deploying  and  maintaining

experimental  facili2es  is  costly    •  Developing  cuXng  edge

telecommunica2ons  technologies  requires  massive  effort  and  budget

•  Learners  constrained  by  loca2on  and  lab  opening  hours

"Assessing the impact of remote hands-on experimentation on engineering students", Johann M. Marquez-Barja, Nicholas Kaminski, Guillaume Jourjon, Jono Vanhie-Van Gerwen, Daan Pareit,, Luiz A. DaSilva. IEEE Transactions on Education. [In preparation], 2015.

•  Online  laboratories  •  Online  laboratories  provide  remote

access  to  experiments  allowing  students  to  access  experiments  without  2me  and  loca2on  restric2ons

•  FORGE’s  ini2a2ve  towards  empowering  educa2on  by  enabling  hands-‐on  remote  experimenta2on

•  Trinity  College  Dublin  is    focused  on  enhancing  online  telecommunica2ons  engineering  educa2on  by  enabling  hands-‐on  remote  experimenta2on  over  its  Smart  Reconfigurable  Radio  Testbed

Experimentation is a key component of engineering education

Page 8: FORGE Keynote @ IT Mexicali, October 2015

Online  laboratories

•  Virtual  labs  •  so^ware-‐based  laboratories  •  simula2on  tools

•  Remote  labs  •  Experimenta2on  on  real  lab  equipment

•  Hybrid  labs  •  Output  data  from  real  measurements/equipment  •  Processed  by  simula2on  tools

FORGE  Forging  Online  Educa2on  through  FIRE

Page 19: FORGE Keynote @ IT Mexicali, October 2015

Forging  Online  Educa2on  through  FIRE  (FORGE)  FORGE  is  a  project  bringing  the  FIRE  and  eLearning  worlds  together.  In  par2cular,  FORGE  will  align  FIRE  (Future  Internet  Research  and  Experimenta2on)  with  the  ongoing  educa2on  revolu2on  as  found  for  example  in  MOOCs    FORGE  will  specify  development  methodologies  and  best  prac2ces  for  offering  FIRE  experimenta2on  facili2es  to  learners  and  to  the  learning  community  in  general      The  project  leads  to  a  strong  connec2on  between  the  learning  community  and  exis2ng  FIRE  plahorms  and  suppor2ng  tools

FORGE  objec2ves  •  FORGE  is  transforming  the  FIRE  facili2es,  already  vital  for  European  research,  into  a  learning  resource  for  higher  educa2on,  enabling  educators  to  easily  create  experiment-‐based  learning  resources

•  From  an  educa2onal  perspec2ve  FORGE  promotes  the  no2on  of  Self-‐Regulated  Learning  (a.k.a.  independent  learning  or  auto-‐didac2c  learning)

•  FORGE  allows  educators  to  create,  use  and  re-‐use  FIRE-‐based  learning  experiences  through  our  tools  and  techniques

•  FORGE  enables  equity  of  access  to  the  latest  ICT  systems  and  tools  independent  of  loca2on  and  at  low  cost.  Experimental  facili2es  are  expensive!!!
