int. j. radiat. biol 1998, vol. 73 , no. 4 , 353 Foreword European Radiation Research `97, a joint meeting of the Association for Radiation Research (ARR) and the European Society for Radiation Biology (ESRB), was held at the University of Oxford from 24± 26th September 1997. There were 230 participants from 29 di å erent countries. A total of 96 oral papers and 72 posters were presented. The oral presentations consisted of invited lectures and shorter pro å ered papers. The intention was to organize a European-based multi-disciplinary meeting involving both basic and applied aspects of radiation science and to use this meeting as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, skills, ideas and visions in the ® eld. This was satisfactorily ful® lled. In fact ERR `97 proved to be a truly international and multi-disciplinary meeting. The programme was further enriched by contributions from the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and the European Late E å ects Project Group (EULEP) both of whom had arranged symposia within the framework of the meeting. This was a successful meeting and the present Special Issue is a compilation of 12 keynote lectures presented at ERR `97.
