Test Taking Tips for ParentsTip #1: Make attendance a priority, especially on days that you

know standardized testing will be administered. Though it’s important for your student to be in school every day, making sure he’s there when the test is taken helps to ensure he won’t lose more learning time because he has to make up a test during school. Make a note of test days on the calendar. That way both you and your student know what’s coming and will be prepared.

Tip #2: Monitor your student’s progress and check for understanding. Subjects like science, social studies and math often have cumulative exams at the end of learning units. If your student is struggling with something now, it won’t be easy for her to have time to try again to learn it just before the test.

Tip #3: Set a reasonable bedtime and stick to it. Eight hours of sleep is preferable. Many parents underestimate the importance of a rested mind and body. Tired children have difficulty focusing and are easily flustered by challenges.

Tip #4: Make sure your child has enough time to wake up fully before he has to go to school. Just as rest is important, so is having enough time to get his brain engaged and in gear. If his test is first thing in the morning, he can’t afford to spend the first hour of school groggy and unfocused.

Tip #5: Provide a high-protein, healthy, low-sugar breakfast for your student. Kids learn better on full stomachs, but if their

stomachs are full of sugary, heavy foods that will make them sleepy or slightly queasy, it’s not much better than an empty stomach.

Tip #6: Talk to your student about how the test went, what he did well and what he would have done differently. Think of it as a mini-debriefing or brainstorming session. You can talk about test-taking strategies after the fact as easily as beforehand and these discussions will improve performance on future tests.

Help Your Student Focus on SchoolworkTo do well in school, students must learn to focus. They must be able to concentrate on one thing and not be distracted. Mastering this ability will benefit them throughout their lives. To strengthen your teen's ability to stay focused:

• Help him recognize when he's not focused. Say, "I think you've lost your focus" when you see him fidget, daydream, yawn or stare into space.

• Don't make lack of focus a crime. Your student needs to be able to admit when he's lost his concentration. Blaming him only makes him defend himself. He's likely to make excuses instead of figuring out ways to focus.

• Help him prioritize. It will be easier for your teen to focus when he know what to do first, second and third.

• Encourage him to break large tasks into smaller ones. Students lose focus when a task is overwhelming.

• Slow things down. Don't move

or talk too fast yourself. And comment when you see your student speeding up. Ask, "Are you taking your time?" and "Have you stopped to check your work?"

• Get your student to relocate. If he's lost his focus, it might be easier to refocus in another place, free from distractions.

• Minimize distractions. Make rules about TV and phone time, computer and video games. Schoolwork should come first.

• Avoid interrupting. When your teen is working on schoolwork, don't remind him to do something else.

• Give clear instructions. Saying, "Get organized" is too vague. "List the tasks you have to do tonight" is more specific.

Spring Into Academic SuccessWe want you to be successful in the new semester. After school tutoring is available through May 23, 2019.

Here is how you can get the help you need.

1. Talk to your teacher first. Your teachers are a valuable resource and they are willing to help. All you need to do is ask. You may set up a time convenient to both you and your teacher to get the extra help you need.

2. We will offer a Tuesday/Thursday after school remediation program to help those students enrolled in EOC courses (Math I, Biology, and English 10). This program will begin March 12th and will run every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm-4pm. We will provide bus transportation as well for those students that need it.

3. Take the time to get the extra help you need before you fall behind. Sometimes it only takes a short period of time, working in a small group or individually with teachers, to get on track to making good grades. Start early and invest the time; it will pay off in the end.

Forestview’s German Language Students shared the German culture and crafts with students at Bess Elementary School.

International Service Project in CTEOur very own construction students, in Mr. C. Austin’s classes, built shipping crates for Fireman’s Faith Ministry to send donated fire equipment to Nicaragua. It was a hands-on international service project! Fireman's Faith Ministry is a non-profit organization that equips fire departments in developing countries with compliant equipment and restore faith within the fire departments.
