The authors
The late Alan Mitchell, an internationally acclaimed dendrologist, retired from Forestry Commission service on 31st December 1984 after a distinguished career at the Forest Research Station, Alice Holt Lodge in Surrey. With Victoria Schilling, he founded the Tree Register of the British Isles (TROBI) which is a Registered Charity.
Victoria Schilling has maintained the TROBI register of tree m easurem ents since the foundation of the Charity and co-ordinates the work of an increasing number of volunteer dendrologists.
John White, who retired in 1997, was the Forestry Com m ission's Research dendrologist based at W estonbirt Arboretum, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, GL8 8QS, UK.
Tree Register Enquiries
Enquiries concerning TROBI should be made c/o Mrs Pamela Stevenson, 77A Hall End, W ootton, Bedfordshire, MK43 9HP.
Acknowledgements
In order to keep this publication and the Tree Register up to date the authors depend upon, and are grateful for, advice from readers about the condition of existing trees and information about potential new champions.

Introduction
T h ere are estim ated to be ap p ro x im ately 200 million ornamental trees in the British Isles, of which up to 200 000 are of dendrological significance. Many of these are of particular interest to landowners, local authorities and the general public. There are over 300 tree co llection s of national im portance and in addition significant trees also occur singly or in small groups in innumerable parks and gardens.
M easurem ents of exceptional trees have been recorded for a con sid erable num ber of years: initially out of curiosity, especially about m aximum size, and then to investigate the potential for growth and productivity according to species and situation . The Forestry C om m ission tree register provided all the measurements for early editions of this title. The register was begun in 1952 as a survey to locate trees of outstanding size, v ig ou r and q u ality for use as p ro sp ectiv e material for plantation tree breeding experiments. V ery larg e an cien t, o rn am en ta l and obscu re specimens were added to the register after 1954. Historical information, particularly from the beginning of the 20th cen tu ry , w as su b seq u en tly researched and extant trees w ere located and remeasured. This work continues today, supplemented increasingly since 1985 with routine tree measurements recorded by The Tree Register of the British Isles w hich is a charitable trust. A nation-wide network of local enthusiasts working on tree measurements in their own areas has been built up and increasingly their measurements will become part of the register.
Listing methodsListing is a lp hab etical by genus and sp ecies. Unfortunately space does not permit the inclusion of common names. Where a species is represented in the list by a single entry this is both the tallest and the stoutest specimen known. Many taxa are represented by two entries, i.e. the tallest and then the stoutest. The second entry is not usually the second tallest tree in existence. Occasionally three entries occur. In these cases there might be more than one specimen with equally large dimensions, or m easurem ent of what is clearly a cham pion
tree could not be made at the standard point on the stem.
In this new edition species and varieties have been included down to a considerable degree of rarity, reflecting an increased public interest in the perform ance of less frequently seen trees. There are some 843 new entries and 574 updated figures since the 1990 edition. The total numbers listed are 1065 species (263 conifers and 802 broadleaves) with 495 cultivars and varieties. The total number of entries is now 2118.
Selecting trees for measurementTree measurement is an absorbing and valuable occupation. Its value lies in the fact that measurem ents often su rv iv e a fter the actu al trees themselves have been lost from either natural or unnatural causes. However, it would be impossible to measure every tree and in consequence priorities have been formulated according to the vulnerability of the tree or the usefulness of the data. The best trees to measure are as follows:
• T rees of know n p lantin g d ate p rev iou sly measured over a long period.
• Old and venerable specimens which probably represent the ultimate size appropriate to the local site conditions.
• Trees exhibiting good growth, horticultural or genetic value, disease or exposure resistance.
• Any tree which occurs in a unique location or context and so provides a contribution to the landscape, including remnant native vegetation, and trees which form part of an historic landscape, park, garden or urban planting.
• Rare or locally distributed taxa for which little data exist already.
MeasurementsAll measurements are metric: height (in metres, m) is listed first and diameter (in centimetres, cm) is then recorded.
1
HeightHeight is recorded most accurately using a precision in stru m en t such as a c lin o m eter or hypsometer while standing at a measured distance from the base of the tree. Measurements must be to the top most branch vertically above the centre of the main stem. When the tip of the tree is not clearly visible several m easurem ents from different sides should be taken as a check. This is often the case when a tree has a spreading crown such as many broadleaved trees in full leaf, and it is not possible to go far enough back to see the top m ost branches. Very occasionally, where trees are leaning badly or even 'reclining', the actual length from the stum p to the end of what was once the top most branch is measured and this action is recorded. Recent storms and remedial lopping have caused the heights of some trees to be reduced in this edition. See Conversion Table 1.
Diam eter
Diameter is actually derived from the m easurement of girth, as this is the single parameter which sum s the in fin ite num ber of d iam eters in an irreg u lar stem cro ss-sectio n . T rad itio n a lly measurements have been made on standing trees at 1.5 m (5 ft) above the ground, and on the upper sid e of any slope. A standard m etric tape m easuring girth can easily be converted to a diam eter m easurem ent by reading centim etres girth and dividing by 7t (3.14159). To convert girth measurements in feet and inches to centimetres diameter, first change to inches and then multiply by 0.8085. As a rough guide 1 ft of girth is equal to 9 .7 cm (alm ost 10 cm ) of d iam eter. See Conversion Table 2.
