Upcoming FHHOA Board Meeting:

Tuesday, January 15th

All board meetings take place at 6:00 pm

on the second Tuesday of each month at

the HOA office. Homeowners are welcome

to attend!

F R O M Y O U R B O A R D

P R E S I D E N T

L uckily for us, we all survived

the much talked about Mayan

2012 Apocalypse. I hope you

all had a good holiday despite the

predictions of the end of the world.

Twenty-twelve was a big year for the

Forest Heights Homeowners Associa-

tion; I would like to highlight just a few

of the accomplishments we met this

past year:

• We hired Jennifer Callaghan, the

new FHHOA General Manager,

thanks to a lot of hard work on the

part the Association Management

Oversight Committee (AMOC)

and the FHHOA Board. The HOA

staff was very supportive during

this transition and I would like to

thank them for their dedication to

providing uninterrupted service

to all homeowners during this

transition

• We completed the dredging

of Mill Pond on time and under

budget. As we have been report-

ing in this newsletter, the Mill

Pond dredging project was years

in the making so it is especially

nice to see the pond restored,

and to have the fountain running

again after many years without

• Several joint projects with the

Go Green Committee and

SOLVE resulted in significant

stream restoration events and

invasive plant removal within our

common areas. We plan to keep

this up in 2013

• While we had to cancel our Fall

Food festival due to the Mill Pond

construction we had a wonderful

4th of July fireworks celebration

• We drove the reformation of

the NW Heights Neighborhood

Association (composed of Forest

Heights and several surrounding

developments) to establish a

more powerful communication

path to the city government.

Most of the NW Heights board

members are Forest Heights

committee members

We ended the year under budget,

and as was announced last month we

have an approved 2013 budget with

no dues increase.

Next month we will discuss our plans

and priorities for 2013.

Happy New Year!

~ Mark Sanzone,

FHHOA Board President ~

Sweet Ambrosia Bakery

Closes Its Doors

After seven years of crafting delicious treats for

the residents of Forest Heights, it is with a heavy

heart that we report the closing of Sweet Ambrosia

Bakery. Owner Mary Ambrose would like to offer

a special “thank you” to all the Forest Heights

patrons—many of whom became friends—who

helped make Mary’s dream of owning her own

bakery a reality.

While baking had been the core of Mary’s business,

over the years Sweet Ambrosia morphed into a full

service café offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, cater-

ing, happy hour and wine tastings, all of which con-

sumed a considerable amount of time to plan and

execute.

The full service café has been successful, however,

the hours required to keep so many menus going

has taken Mary away from baking, which is where

her passion and creativity thrive. Closing shop,

which happened at the end of December, will allow

Mary the freedom to return to baking full time.

Please join us in wishing Mary much success as

she ventures back into the world of flour, sugar,

baking pans, frosting, fondants and pastry bags.

We can’t wait to see what she comes up next!

If you would like to stay in touch with Mary, you can

reach her at: [email protected].

Good luck Mary!

We will miss you!

F orest Heights Homeowners Association is

governed by a seven (7) member Board of

Directors, each of whom serves for a three

year term. The three year terms are staggered so

that each year new board members join as the most

senior board members’ terms expire. In May, two

(2) board members’ terms expire, and the board is

seeking their replacements. The annual board

member election will be held May 1st, the first

Tuesday in May, in conjunction with the Annual

Meeting. At this time, we are recruiting candidates

to run for the two (2) board member positions.

A Nominating Committee has been assigned the

task of recruiting/coordinating candidates and

answering any questions you might have.

REQUIREMENTS FOR NOMINEES

Nominees should be members in good standing of

Forest Heights with a desire to actively participate in

guiding and providing direction for our community.

Previous board service is desirable, but not necessary.

If elected you will be expected to:

• prepare for and attend monthly board meetings

• participate in study sessions, evaluate subjects in

an objective manner

• educate yourself on homeowners associations

• support the will of the majority of the board.

An ability to communicate and work with others is,

of course, helpful.

SCHEDULE FOR NOMINEES

January/February 2012

Decide on candidacy (self-nominated or nominated by

another).

March 2012

Candidate profile and statements will be published in

the FHHOA Newsletter. Deadline 2/15.

April 2012

Candidate statements will be published in the FHHOA

Newsletter and proxy will be distributed via the annual

mailing. Deadline 3/15.

Annual Meeting).

Thank you for your interest in serving on the FHHOA

board!

M any homeowners have asked me,

when faced with various safety

situations, who they should call:

our private security firm or the Portland

police? The primary benefit of contracting

with a security firm is for response in the

case when the Police are unavailable to

respond. In addition, we expect that their

periodic patrols of the community will

assist in deterring criminal activity.

However, they are not Police equivalent,

so it is still important to contact the police

for all issues as well. Only the police have

the ability to make arrests, demand identi-

fication, and detain a suspect. While our

security firm is trained to handle a variety

of situations, they will also have to defer

to the police for issues that require further

action.

I have heard repeatedly that owners

hesitate contacting the police directly,

citing concern for “more important crimes”

and not wanting to be bothersome.

However, we have been reassured

that this is not the case. Calling the

non-emergency line gives the police

department the opportunity to determine

if they have a patrol person available to

respond. If they don’t, it is still important

for them to track areas of concern.

With this in mind, we ask residents to

call the police first and foremost when

there is an issue. Contacting our security

is also important and can often provide a

quicker response time in some situations,

but shouldn’t be relied upon for law en-

forcement.

Below is a simple guideline one when to

call who.

T he Go Green committee of Forest Heights

encourages neighborhood participation in our

SOLVE volunteer restoration events to remove

invasive plants and plant native plants along the streams

in the common areas. This approach is one of several

methods to decrease erosion along the stream banks

in Forest Heights. One way for neighbors to get involved

is to undergo training to become a SOLVE Stream

Team Captain. This program is a great opportunity

for high school and college students—as well as any

volunteer—who is interested in gaining a background in

restoration practices required to assist in leading a

SOLVE event. Trained volunteers have the opportunity

to shadow and work with experienced stream team

captains after the training. No prior experience is

necessary.

Learn more about SOLVE’s Stream Team Captain

training program, and if you are interested in additional

information, please feel free to contact members of the

Go Green committee by emailing:[email protected].

The next SOLVE event taking place in Forest Heights

will be on Saturday, February 9th. Please consider

attending this event in order to learn more about the

benefits of being a stream team captain.

(effective January 2013)

I n the association’s ongoing efforts to produce a

balanced budget, the Budget and Finance Committee

has recommended to the Board of Directors that the

Forest Heights EcoShuttle extend the current mid-day

service break by one hour. This additional one hour break

will occur during the low ridership hours between 10:00 am

and 2:15 pm and will help the association realize a cost

reduction of over $17,000 per year.

This new schedule will go into effect on January 1, 2013.

If you ride the EcoShuttle, please clip the new schedule

(right) and keep in a handy location to assist you with your

travel plans. The new schedule will also be updated on the

Forest Heights website on January 1st.

And a reminder about the EcoShuttle and inclement

weather: with winter weather approaching, please

remember that during snow events and other weather

related instances, the EcoShuttle will make every effort to

safely transport riders. When we encounter a “weather

event” (snow and ice), EcoShuttle will switch to its larger,

diesel pusher bus with an automated chain system.

Depending on the conditions, the shuttle may be running

on a shortened “snow route”. For inclement weather or

service delays, please call the EcoShuttle pre-recorded

route information line: 503.517.8566.

The FHHOA Board of Directors and the Budget and

Finance Committee thank all EcoShuttle riders for their

understanding and support of this additional break in

service during our low ridership hours. Our collective efforts

to reduce costs to the association go a long way in keeping

your annual assessments at just $48 per month.

Last month, Santa visited Forest Heights for milk

and cookies and was joined by some of his clos-

est friends. Over one hundred children from the

neighborhood brought their smiles—and wish

lists—to the big man in red during a morning of

milk, cookies, caroling and photos.

Special thanks to Steve Kaer and the Kaer

Property Group at the Forest Height Village

Center for organizing this event. When our

annual tree lighting ceremony was cancelled

at the last minute, Steve Kaer jumped into action

and magically got onto Santa’s calendar. Thanks

also to the “Daisies” Girl Scout Troop 45045 who

entertained Santa and all event attendees with

their signing of Christmas carols.

Please

recycle your

holiday tree

and wreath

T he holiday season brings with it many visual

delights – colored lights and displays in front

yards, wreaths on doors and indoor holiday

trees decorated with ornaments. These decorations

are fun, festive and create a sense of joy as we drive

through the neighborhood, but by late January the tree

has dried out and is a fire hazard, the wreath has turned

brittle and the lights have lost some of their luster.

While Forest Heights does not have specific regulations

on how long holiday decorations can be left up, we

do encourage owners to take down their decorations

within a reasonable period of time. We also appreciate

that weather conditions can impact the timing of taking

down holiday decorations, but with a little planning now,

those lights, decorations and ornaments can be put

away in a timely fashion.

Christmas trees deserve special mention. Please do not

leave your spent Christmas tree on a porch, driveway

or side yard. Various Boy Scout Troops have local tree

recycling programs—in fact, a tree recycling event is

being held at the Village Center on January 5th (see

below). Additionally, Walker Garbage Service can take

your tree at no charge for

trees cut up and put

completely in the yard

debris bin. A small fee

will be initiated for trees

left at the curbside on

yard debris pick up days.

Thanks for doing your

part to usher in the

New Year in Forest

Heights!

According to tradition, Hoppin’ John should be the first thing one eats on New Year’s Day to ensure maximum good luck.

If the dish is served with a side of collard greens, chard or kale, it adds the promise of wealth since these greens are the

color of money. Even more luck is promised when served with cornbread as the bread represents the color of gold. So how

did Hoppin’ John get its name? Food historians share several tales and legends:

A man named John came “a-hoppin” when his wife took the dish from the stove

A South Carolina custom was inviting a guest to eat by saying, “Hop in, John”

In 1841, the dish was sold in the streets of Charleston, SC by a disabled man who was known as Hoppin’ John

However the dish got its name and whatever its origin, one thing is for sure – it is delicious. We wish you all a New Year

filled with the wealth of health, happiness, peace, love and compassion.

Happy New Year from the Forest Heights Homeowners Association!

We look forward to another great year with our fantastic homeowners.

“Eat poor on New Year’s, so that you

may eat rich the rest of the year”

Cook bacon in Dutch oven over medium heat until crisp, about

8 minutes. Transfer bacon to paper towel-lined plate. Pour off

all but 1 tablespoon fat from pot and brown ham, about 3 minutes

per side. Transfer to plate with bacon.

Add onion and celery to pot and cook until softened, about 5

minutes. Stir in garlic and thyme and cook until fragrant, about

30 seconds. Add broth, peas, bay leaves, and browned ham and

bring to boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, until beans

are just tender, about 20 minutes. Transfer ham to cutting board

and cut into ½-inch pieces.

Place rice in fine-mesh strainer set over large bowl. Rinse under

running water until water runs clear, about 1 minute. Drain rice well

and stir into pot. Place square of aluminum foil directly on surface

of simmering liquid. Simmer covered until liquid is absorbed and

rice is tender, about 20 minutes, stirring and repositioning foil twice

during cooking. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 10

minutes. Fluff rice with fork. Stir in scallions, bacon, and ham.

Serve.

Legend has it...
