economies to create and maintain an environment that sustains the competitiveness of enterprises

South Africas global competitiveness improves

In this years report South Africas global competitiveness ranking rose from 53rd place out of 62 in 2015 to 52nd in 2016 (2016 Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Yearbook-(Since 1989 The report compares the performance of 62 countries according to more than 300 measures of competitiveness)

The improvement is despite continued drought and a depressed global economy

Looking at the BRICS grouping of emerging economies South Africa performed better than Brazil which ranked 57th Mainland China dropped from 22nd place to 25th but remains the most competitive BRICS country Russia rose from 45th place to 44th and India from 44th to 41st

Countries are analysed according to data grouped into four categories government efficiency business efficiency economic performance and infrastructure

In the 2016 report South Africa had mixed results in the four categories

bull Economic performance declined from 49 in 2015 to 54 in 2016

bull Government efficiency remained stable at 40th place

bull Business efficiency improved markedly rising from 52nd place to 47th in 2016

bull Infrastructure also saw improvement from 55 in 2015 to 54 in 2016

OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers plan an informal meeting in Istanbul Oct 8-13 to discuss how to implement a production deal OPEC members reached in Algiers last month Algerian Energy Minister Nouredine Bouterfa has told local Ennahar TV

In an interview scheduled be broadcast on Thursday Bouterfa said the Algiers deal to cut output would be in force for up to a year

Oil prices rose about 7 percent in September ending up a second straight month after OPEC unveiled plans in Algiers to reduce output to between 325 million and 330 million barrels per day Details are still being worked out among producers

OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers plan an informal meeting in Istanbul Oct 8-13 to discuss how to implement a production deal OPEC members reached in Algiers last month Algerian Energy Minister Nouredine Bouterfa has told local Ennahar TV

In an interview scheduled be broadcast on Thursday Bouterfa said the Algiers deal to cut output would be in force for up to a year

Oil prices rose about 7 percent in September ending up a second straight month after OPEC unveiled plans in Algiers to reduce output to between 325 million and 330 million barrels per day Details are still being worked out among producers
