CHINA AS A LEADER OF THE WORLD ECONOMYby Gregory C Chow (Princeton University, USA)
“Gregory C Chow, a pioneer in China’s march to a market system and a distinguished professor of
economics at Princeton University, has written an important sequel to his recently published book,
Interpreting China’s Economy (2010). In his new book, China as a Leader of the World Economy, Chow
explores the evolution of China’s institutions (with an in-depth discussion of the 12th Five Year Plan),
analyzes the problems China needs to overcome, provides policy proposals to solve those problems,
and presents the results of several quantitative studies of the Chinese economy. In 31 clearly written
and concise chapters, Chow covers a broad array of topics ranging from how to stop inflation to
how to improve university education. As a master craftsman and long-time student of the Chinese
economy, no one is better equipped to increase our understanding of China’s economic development
and the future of China in the global economy.”
James A Dorn
Cato Institute, Washington, DC
After the 1978 Economic Reform, China’s economic development has been on a fast track ever
since. Later on, the successful accession into the WTO in 2001 accelerated China’s economic
transformation and made it more integrated with the world. Today, as the second-largest economy
in the world, China has earned herself a leading role on the world stage beyond dispute. This book
provides readers with answers to why and how China functions as a leader in the world economy.
This book surveys China’s economy in four parts — economic institutions, economic problems,
economic policies and economic analyses. It is based on the author’s latest findings from his
scholarly research on China’s economy, his involvement with China’s economic reform and
development, and his personal contacts with Chinese academics, entrepreneurs, government
officials and ordinary citizens for over thirty years. The book is written in a style accessible to
the general readers, since most chapters are based on articles published in three major Chinese
newspapers, of which the author is a columnist. It can also serve as a reference book for
professionals, an authoritative guide for general readers and a supplementary text for university
students. The author uses it as a supplementary text for his course on the Chinese economy at
Princeton University.

es CHINA INTO ITS SECOND RISEMyths, Puzzles, Paradoxes, and Challenge to Theoryby James C Hsiung (New York University, USA)
This book seeks to demystify the re-ascendancy of China as a civilization state. China’s politics
and society are examined in the light of its living civilization, which is the only one of the ancient
civilizations that has survived to this day. The book also contrasts China’s development with that of
the West and Japan. By combining the impact of internal political and socio-economic developments
in China and its external relations (from the silk routes, the tribute system, to the modern day), it
unravels the existing myths, puzzles, and paradoxes surrounding China and questions the adequacy
of most of the Western political theories (such as realism in international relations) in an attempt
to explicate China’s re-emergence as a world power. It attempts to tackle squarely the question:
Is China a threat to world order?
The book traces the rationale for contemporary developments in China to the roots in the country’s
tradition as well as foreign influences and seeks to unravel the puzzle about the unique China
Model that defies conventional thinking in political economy, with its sustained and incredibly
rapid economic growth over the past three decades. This study on China’s second rise provides
a broad background that includes a meaningful scrutiny of the country’s behavior during its first
rise (713–1820) and beyond. In comparing China’s ongoing second rise with its first ascent,
the book not only refocuses on and reinterprets the example set during its first rise, but also
takes into account the crucial lessons it learned during its century in eclipse in the interregnum,
for the effects they have on the country’s current orientation and behavior. The book follows an
interdisciplinary approach, combining the cultural, intellectual-historical, normative-ideological, and
social-scientific perspectives, to lend a more solid grasp of the present-day China. It ends with an
educated speculation, based on the foregoing analyses, on the contours of a Pax Sinica that is
likely to result from the impact of China’s second rise as a world power.

THE CHINA WAVERise of a Civilizational Stateby Weiwei Zhang (Fudan University, China, Chunqiu Institute, China & Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Switzerland)
“One of the most popular books on sale in China at the moment is on the rise of a civilizational state,
by Zhang Weiwei. Mr Zhang argues that China is unique as ‘the world’s only amalgam of an ancient
civilization and a huge modern state’, and is ‘increasingly returning to its own roots for inspiration,
and producing its own norms and standards.’” The Economist: Nothing New under Heaven
“As China feels its own economic and political strength in the world, it is natural that its own
intellectuals should want to explain China’s progress theoretically, first to themselves, then to the
world. Prof. Zhang’s book has been well regarded within China, making a major contribution to the
internal debate on China’s future. By translating his book into English, Prof. Zhang adds to the world’s
understanding of China’s development and what this means for the world. China’s astonishing re-
emergence on the global stage has thrown into confusion traditional western-dominated theories of
modernization, in Prof. Zhang’s own words, putting ‘an end to the End of Civilization’.” George Yeo Former Foreign Minister of Singapore
“The China Wave: Rise of a Civilizational State is the geopolitical book for our times. It frames the
rise of China, which is the big story of the 21st Century, with a bold and novel theory that challenges
conventional wisdom of national structure, democracy, and what constitutes good governance. At a
time when American exceptionalism is on the wane, are we ready for Chinese exceptionalism on the
rise? Zhang Weiwei, whose energetic vision resonates well among Chinese future leaders, makes a
compelling case. His arguments and insights, as analytical and passionate as they are confrontational
and controversial, should be required reading for everyone concerned about China. Ignore this book
and you will not understand how China’s leaders think.” Robert Lawrence Kuhn Author, How China’s Leaders Think
“The rise of China is the biggest story of our time and the best story-tellers of our time come from the
West. This has led to a huge global paradox where the best story-tellers have failed to understand the
biggest story of our time. This is why the world urgently needs good Chinese story-tellers to provide
the Chinese perspective. Prof. Zhang has done the world a huge favor by coming out with this timely
and interesting new perspective on the rise of China.” Kishore Mahbubani Dean, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore
Author, The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Power to the East One of the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” in 2010 and 2011 by Foreign Policy Magazine
“Few scholars from the mainland are as urbane, connected and savvy as Zhang Weiwei … The book’s
central idea is that China is different from other nation states. There is some merit to this.Unlike
the politically diffuse civilisations of Europe, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, China has
managed to establish political unity over most of its territory.” South China Morning Post
This is a best-seller in China and a geopolitical book for our times. As a leading thinker from China,
Zhang Weiwei provides an original, comprehensive and engrossing study on the rise of China and
its effective yet controversial model of development, and the book has become a centerpiece of
an unfolding debate within China on the nature and future of the world’s most populous nation
and its possible global impact. China’s rise, according to Zhang, is not the rise of an ordinary
country, but the rise of a different type of country, a country sui generis, a civilizational state, a new
model of development and a new political discourse which indeed questions many of the Western
assumptions about democracy, good governance and human rights. The book is as analytical as it
is provocative, and should be required reading for everyone concerned with the rise of China and
its global implications.
Readership: Researchers, policy-makers, general readers interested in the rise of China, its model of development and its global impact.
About the AuthorZhang Weiwei is a professor of international relations at Fudan University and a senior research fellow at the Chunqiu Institute, China. He is concurrently a senior fellow at the Centre for Asian Studies, Geneva, and a visiting professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations. He has written extensively in English and Chinese on China’s economic and political reform, China’s development model and comparative politics. He worked as a senior English interpreter for Deng Xiaoping and other Chinese leaders in the mid-1980s.

CHINESE UNDER GLOBALIZATIONEmerging Trends in Language Use in Chinaedited by Jin Liu (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) & Hongyin Tao (University of California, Los Angeles, USA)
As China experiences tremendous economic and social transformation in the reform years,
language use in China has also undergone remarkable changes in the past couple decades:
the national obsession with learning the global English, which becomes both a resource for
modernization and a source of contention; the expanding use of local languages and dialects
in mass media, where standard Mandarin is promoted and legally prescribed as the principal
language; the emergence of the Internet language that has become a creative source for
constructing a distinct youth identity; the Cantonese writing movement that challenges the
hegemony of the Chinese writing system, which is traditionally based on northern Mandarin, to
name a few. The nine papers collected in this volume examine recent trends in language use
in mainland China, and the associated social, economic, political, and cultural manifestations.
Drawing on their backgrounds and expertise in sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, linguistic
anthropology, and cultural studies, the authors offer interdisciplinary, insightful, and critical analysis
of linguistic struggles and linguistic politics in contemporary China.
As such, the carefully presented details of emerging language use in this book will be of value
to scholars interested in language and culture in contemporary China. It may be used as a
supplementary text for students in Chinese (socio-)linguistics, Chinese language, Chinese cultural
studies, Chinese anthropology, Chinese sociology, and Chinese studies in general.

EAST ASIADevelopments and Challengesedited by Yongnian Zheng (East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore) & Liang Fook Lye (East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore)
The aim of the book is to provide readers with an understanding of the important and emerging
political, economic and social trends and challenges in East Asia in the coming years.
There is urgency to conduct such a review of the state of East Asian affairs as the international
and regional environments seemed to be headed towards greater uncertainty. At the international
level, the European Union (EU) continues to grapple with its debt crisis with no clear resolution in
sight. On the other side of the Atlantic, the US is gearing up for its presidential and congressional
elections that will take place towards the end of 2012. The outcome of these elections would have
implications for America’s relations with countries in East Asia, particularly China. Already, in the
run-up to these elections, potential candidates have whipped up anti-China sentiments or even
called for tough anti-China measures to appeal their respective constituencies.
More significantly, with the relative decline of the US and EU, increasing doubts have been raised
concerning the values and beliefs that have undergird the US and individual European countries’
political system and institutions since World War Two. China’s current stellar economic growth in
the midst of the sputtering performance of the US and the EU economies have lent increasing
legitimacy to the attractiveness of China’s model that combines strong authoritarian leadership
with the vibrancy of a market economy. Managing a rising China and a declining US and the EU will
have an impact, whether big or small, on the countries in Asia.
Also, in East Asia, a number of countries have either undergone or are going to undergo major
elections that have elected or will elect a new leadership to take over the helm, with possible
implications for policy adjustments or possibly even policy changes in these countries. China is
gearing up for its crucial leadership transition at the 18th Party Congress, while Taiwan has held
its presidential election; Hong Kong has elected its Chief Executive and will hold the Legislative
Council elections, while the two “Koreas” will be adjusting to the post-Kim Jong-il uncertainty. Japan,
too is still trying to recover from the triple disasters (tsunami, earthquakes and the radioactivity
fallout) with the current Noda administration still trying to figure a way out to revitalize the Japanese
economy.

es ECONOMIC FREEDOMLessons of Hong Kongby Kui-Wai Li (City University of Hong Kong, China)
“In this timely book, the author contributes valuable insights on the critical role that economic freedom has played in Hong Kong’s dynamic economic achievements. At times challenging, the author’s scholarly yet practical volume offers important policy guidance for other economies, particularly at this critical juncture for the global economy.” Edwin J Feulner
President of The Heritage Foundation, Washington DC
“For more than three decades, the economy of Hong Kong has been the freest in the world. This elevates its importance for those seeking to understand the growth and development process. In this book, the author provides both an understandable and carefully researched record of the historical evolution and structural characteristics of the Hong Kong economy. It is a must read for those seeking to understand the Hong Kong experience and what we can learn from it.” James Gwartney
Co-author, Economic Freedom of the World Annual Report, The Fraser Institute, Canada
“This book is full of fascinating and new details about how Hong Kong became the economic power it is today. It identifies the key principles, such as economic and personal freedom, that underpin this astonishing development. It points out the need for Hong Kong to remain vibrant in a rapidly changing world, and in very timely fashion, asks how far both China and Hong Kong itself are up to the challenge of preserving the foundations of Hong Kong’s success.” Eamonn Butler
Director, Adam Smith Institute, UK
“At a time of transition and turbulence in the global economy, economic freedom is an especially important subject for reflection and debate. The author uses the seminal case of Hong Kong to examine what it means to implement the idea and sustain it in practice. In this carefully crafted book, students, policymakers, and market participants will learn much of great value. Its implications extend far beyond East Asia.” Louis W Pauly
Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Governance Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto
“Hong Kong is highly regarded as one of the most successful models of a small open economy. The author offers a far-sighted view on economic freedom as the chief element of the success in this book where the rationale and empirical data are brilliantly laid out. This well-written case study will lead you to the understanding that economic freedom is the most powerful tool in exploring the past, present and future of Hong Kong. The author’s in-depth analysis will be of great use to nations around the world including Korea, which gives me confidence to recommend this book to you without any hesitation.” Tae-Shin Kwon
Vice Chairman, Presidential Council on National Competitiveness, South Korea
“Hong Kong is a small open economy that has achieved remarkable economic growth after the Second World War. Why has it been so successful? This book uncovers a variety of dynamic features that has contributed to its great success. We will see how economic freedom has functioned as an infrastructure for Hong Kong’s economic development.” Shin-ichi Fukuda
Director, Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy, University of Tokyo
“The book provides a far reaching global overview of specific topics that are then tied to the economic reality of modern Hong Kong. Detailed and specific, the theory and on-the-ground reality collide to provide a comprehensive view of Hong Kong’s economy. Central themes such as ‘positive non-intervention’ — a unique Hong Kong concept — are found alongside examinations of global phenomena such as competition law to see how they have and will work in the special and fascinating economy that is Hong Kong. A wealth of data supplement the history to complete the picture of the city Milton Friedman called ‘the capital of capitalism.’” G Andrew Work
Co-Founder and Director, The Lion Rock Institute, Hong Kong SAR
Hong Kong has been one of the fastest growing East Asian economies since the end of the Second World War. The adoption and practice of economic freedom have been major pillars in its economic success. Indeed, the experience of Hong Kong has served as a reference for other emerging economies in the region. The scope of the book elaborates the context and ingredients of economic freedom that have brought success and prosperity to Hong Kong. With sovereignty reversion to China in 1997, it is even more relevant to see how economic freedom is shaping and adapting to the new environment.
There exist a number of economic indices based on economic freedom. Hong Kong has been ranked as the freest economy in the world for a number of consecutive years. While the economic freedom indices compare the performance of a large number of word economies, there is a lack of economic literature that studies the absolute level of economic freedom of a single economy. This book boldly serves the purpose of elaborating on the absolute performance of economic freedom in the world’s freest economy. It is, therefore, the first of its kind and unique in its field. Numerous areas of studies related to economic freedom are examined, studied and elaborated so that readers can have a full and comprehensive understanding of the content of economic freedom in Hong Kong.

es HU JINTAOChina’s Silent Rulerby Kerry Brown (Chatham House, UK)
“Kerry Brown has written an outstandingly insightful book on Hu Jintao. This is not only the first
English-language biography of one of the most powerful and also most enigmatic political leaders in
the world today, but also an invaluable guide to contemporary China and its prospects.”
Dr Julia Lovell
Birkbeck, University of London
“In Hu Jintao: China’s Silent Ruler, Kerry Brown offers a comprehensive and informative account
of Hu Jintao’s leadership of China during the crucial first decade of the twenty-first century. Brown
assesses the policy successes and shortcomings of Hu’s leadership in such critical areas as Chinese
economics, foreign policy, the Chinese Communist Party, and social stability. Brown’s wide-ranging
analysis establishes the benchmark for any future study of Hu Jintao’s presidency.”
Professor Robert Ross
Boston College
Over the six-month period from late 2012 to early 2013, Hu Jintao, the President of the People’s
Republic of China, Chair of the Central Military Commission, and Party Secretary of the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP), will relinquish at least two of his three positions. According to the
constitution of the CCP, his time as Party head will come to an end, given that he has already
served for two terms. Well over the supposed retirement age of 68, he will have to hand over
the leadership of China to a new generation of leaders at the 18th Party Congress in Beijing. In
Chinese politics, the act of retirement is surprisingly difficult, but Hu Jintao is widely known for his

retirement if he so desires.
This timely volume thus aims to provide an analytical assessment of Hu’s period in charge of the
world’s most populous country. It concentrates briefly on his early life and entry into politics, then
considers and evaluates his stewardship of the economy and of international affairs, as well as
his ideological contribution and leadership of the communist party. In the process, the reader will
also be afforded a broad overview of China’s rapid developments over the last decade, since 2002.

THE UNIQUENESS OF CHINA’S DEVELOPMENT MODEL: 1842–2049by Kwok-wah Yip (Founder and Chairman of Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, Hong Kong)
The book discusses the development model of China which has now overtaken Japan as the world’s
second largest economy. This remarkable economic achievement has not followed the Western
world’s favorite developmental tools — of freedom, democracy and a market driven economy, but
rather China’s unique model — of one-party authoritarian rule with a mixed economy. The Middle
Kingdom’s way of development has largely questioned the West’s core values — freedom and
democracy. The book argues that the model is based on the country’s 3,000-year-old civilization,
forged by the efforts, innovations, trial and error process of several recent generations, and guided
by the Chinese Communist Party in the past 60 years.

Business Games for Management and Economics: Learning by Playing presents board and video
business games which combine teamwork with individual decisions based on computer models.
Business games support integration of learning experience for different levels of education and
between different disciplines: economics, management, technological, environmental and social
studies. The work is based on experience in adaptation, design and conducting of field, and board
and video games played in college settings within standard schedules. Most of the games are
played in Modeling and Simulation, Microeconomics, Logistics and Supply Chain Management
courses. Game boards are 2- or 3-dimensional displays of subsystems, their components and
phases of technological and business processes, which allow customization of games of the same
type for different missions in schools, universities, and corporate training centers. The range of
games applied to economics and management classes spreads from 2-person games for kid’s

CHINA-EU TRADE DISPUTES AND THEIR MANAGEMENTby Qingjiang Kong (China University of Political Science and Law, China)
“The evolving economic relations between China and the European Union offer a rich canvass
against which recent trade disputes are brilliantly analyzed in this book. The author makes a major
contribution by carefully looking at the implementation efforts by the two members which shows the
high degree of effectiveness that WTO law has reached. The institutional aspects of both the EU and
China trade policies are meticulously discussed, shedding light on the intricacies of decision making
and policy designs which will shape the future of the international economic order.”
Professor Julien Chaisse
Faculty of Law, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
“Until recently the trade relation between China and Europe was often underexposed. With this
valuable book, Professor Kong breaks new ground in exploring the contours of trade conflicts between
these two economic superpowers. This work is a must-read for anyone who is interested in finding
out where China and the EU are heading next.” Dr Jan Hoogmartens
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belgium &
author of “EC Trade Law following China’s Accession to the WTO”, Kluwer Law, 2004
“China’s entry to the WTO in the year 2001 might so far be the most important event for the world
economy this century. As it is of importance if a trading partner is developed, developing, big or small
country, it has been a gigantic challenge to find the right formula for China’s accession. A number of
dispute settlement procedures are likely to continue in the next decade. That is totally normal and it
is also beneficial for all sides if unclear issues are settled or parties are reminded of the core WTO
principles. This study will be a very useful handbook for all parties concerned.” Bengt E Johansson
Consul-General of Sweden in Shanghai
Former National Expert at the EU’s DG Trade, China Section
The European Union (EU) has now become the largest trade partner of China. While Sino-US trade
relations and particularly the high-profile trade disputes between the US and China get considerable
academic attention for geopolitical reasons, less research has been done on the Sino-EU trade
disputes that gradually loom large on the horizon. This book delves into the trade disputes between
China and the EU and identifies the causes for trade disputes. It examines how the disputes will
shape China-EU trade relations, and offers a macro overview on how the issues can be resolved
or at least how they should be managed.
This timely book sheds light on Sino-EU trade disputes, putting these in global perspective and
enriching the literature in this regard.

t THE CHANGING FACE OF INNOVATIONIs it Shifting to Asia?by Seeram Ramakrishna (National University of Singapore) & Daniel Joo-Then Ng (Independent Strategic Advisor and Business Consultant, Singapore)
This book provides a brief overview of the recent trends in innovations. Early inventions/innovations
that began in Asia (i.e., compass, paper, gunpowder and printing) spread to the Atlantic (Europe and
USA) by land and sea routes. However, with population growth, economic expansion, availability of
skilled researchers and lower cost of research in Asia Pacific, there has been a shift in innovation
activities in this region.
There has been a discernable trend of innovation (R&D) in countries like Japan, Korea, China,
India and Singapore. This book attempts to create awareness of this trend and hopes to motivate
business leaders and policy makers to take advantage of this shifting trend, as well as to
encourage more global collaboration in innovations to face societal challenges in the 21st century.

WORK, MANAGEMENT AND THE BUSINESS OF LIVINGby Moneim El-Meligi
“The author’s main concern in this book is the proper exercise of leadership. His point of departure is that leadership as a human enterprise has to be consistent with the nature of the human person. After all, we share the same human intelligence, passion, and creative potential irrespective of our level in the authority hierarchy. El-Meligi’s notion of leadership is based on deep understanding of the essential qualities that make us human. He reminds those in leadership position that the people they lead are as human as they are. They share the same qualities of intelligence, passion, and creative potential. To my knowledge, rarely do books on leadership stop even briefly to deal with these essential notions. This book enriches the field by a vision already outlined by the author in his earlier book — Leading Starts in the Mind. Here is another brilliant contribution from the author.”
Father Guy Bonneau L. PS. M.Ed. Psychologist, Quebec, Canada
“Moneim El-Meligi provides a refreshing refrain from the tedium of ‘old wine in new bottles’ that characterizes much of today’s writing on leadership and management. Indeed, the wisdom, clarity and practicality of El Meligi’s thinking and writing stands as a beacon of substantial light against the fogginess of self-help literature inundating the managers looking for guidance on improving effectiveness … This book is a must read for all practitioners of management. Nowhere is this more evident than in El-Meligi’s teaching on the vital importance of energy management. ‘The business of living is nothing other than management of energy in these spheres of existence’, i.e., work, play and leisure. El Meligi offers a meaningful antidote to the confining paradigm of ‘work/life balance’ bromides that we hear so much about, yet which offer sparse help in sustaining life’s energy. I enthusiastically recommend this book to clients and others who are committed to the on-going challenge of living a meaningful and energy-sustaining life each day.” Robert M Marino
President, Alpha Nouveau Consulting, Inc.
“A fascinating book in which we witness a man coming face to face with opportunities which fate has placed in his way, he uses these opportunities as occasions to construct his life, in line with a theory that is integral part of his life … Not the least significant lesson we learn from this book is seeing how a task is transformed to suit the audience to whom it is addressed: we do not develop managers among peoples who are in the process of developing nationally the same way we teach those who belong to well-established nations … The entire book is written with the fervor and clarity typical of Moneim. It captures the attention of the reader from the beginning to the end. This book is essential not only for those who are interested in human relations of our time but all human relations of all times.” Moustapha Safouan
Training member of the “Psychoanalytic Society of Paris” and Author of “Pleasure and Being” and Speech or Death”
“Professor Moneim El-Meligi’s latest book is a compendium of a life’s work on what I would term ‘the anthropology of management’. In his own humble style, he introduces ideas and concepts that go to the core of management, namely people. He places people at the centre of his universe, bringing together his early ideas of psychology and management, and later expanding on his multi-cultural experiences in many parts of the world. His insights are sharp, clear and universal, expressed in language that makes easy reading and understanding. This is a book that many will value as a reference on how people can best contribute to organisations, and vice versa.” Dr N Varaprasad
Director, London School of Business and Finance, Singapore and former CEO, National Library Board, Singapore
In the modern economic paradigm characterized by a multitude of business management theories aimed at maximizing profits, there is a danger of formalizing management techniques to the extent of dehumanizing individuals or reducing them to humanoids. This book deals with familiar concepts in the management literature, but always in light of the model of the human person. It sheds light on organizing processes in individuals, small groups, and organizations and other large social systems by covering empirical research on three central topics — modes of influence, intrapersonal communication, and change — through which the social context is constantly shifting.
Concepts from other fields are also introduced by the author into the field of management, such as philosophy, biology, sociology, semantics, and mythology, to name a few. As a protest against behaviorism, materialism, objectivism, determinism, elitism, and many other “-ism’s” that degrade the human person, this book provides food for thought to students of management and organizational behavior, psychologists and sociologists, as well as political scientists and leaders of business and nonbusiness institutions.
Readership: Managers, psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, graduate students and researchers in social science.
About the AuthorDr Moneim El-Meligi received his earlier education in Egypt; he obtained his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Alexandria University, a Diploma of Education from Ain-Shams University and an MA in Psychology from Cairo University. He pursued his graduate education in UK where he obtained his PhD in 1954 from the Institute of Psychiatry of London University. His publications include several books (in English, Arabic and French) and over 100 articles and case studies. In addition, some of his psychological tests have been translated into French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

BASIC PHYSICAL CHEMISTRYThe Route to Understandingby E Brian Smith (Formerly Master of St Catherine’s College, Oxford, UK & Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, UK)
This elegant book provides a student-friendly introduction to the subject of physical chemistry. It
is concise and more compact than standard textbooks on the subject and it emphasises the two
important concepts underpinning physical chemistry: quantum mechanics and the second law of
thermodynamics. The principles are challenging to students because they both focus on uncertainty
and probability. The book explains these fundamental concepts clearly and shows how they offer
the key to understanding the wide range of chemical phenomena including atomic and molecular
spectra, the structure and properties of solids, liquids and gases, chemical equilibrium, and the
rates of chemical reactions.

CHEMISTRY IN THEATREInsufficiency, Phallacy or Bothby Carl Djerassi (Stanford University, USA)
“First hook the fish and then bring it on board. This book is an excellent hook for arousing interest for chemistry and science by playfully uncovering high complexity behind apparent simplicity.”
Jean-Marie Lehn Nobel Laureate in Chemistry
“In these tantalizing plays, Djerassi again delivers compelling science-in-fiction, superbly crafted and bristling with his inimitable verve and zest.” Dudley Hershbach
Nobel Laureate in Chemistry
“Djerassi’s creativity and passion connect science and the arts. Chemistry, drama, ethics, sociology, humor, and more … artistically conceived, engaging, and enriching to all.”
Bassam Z Shakhashiri University of Wisconsin
President of the American Chemical Society
This book examines the questions “What can science do for the theatre?” and “What can the theatre do for science?” which raise challenges for both theatre professionals and scientists. Unusually, this book deals with plays first and foremost as reading material — as texts to be read alone or in dramatic readings — rather than emphasizing performances on the stage. Concrete examples are given to demonstrate the potential pedagogic value of using the dialogic style and plot structure of plays in science, with a special focus on chemistry.
Very few books have dealt with the subject of science-in-theatre and virtually none with chemistry-in-theatre. Texts of the author’s two recent plays, Insufficiency and Phallacy, are included in their entirety to offer concrete examples of plays dealing with actual (rather than invented) chemistry. Insufficiency represents an example from the field of beer and champagne bubbles, where the topics of academic tenure and fashion in chemistry are analyzed, whereas in Phallacy, a case history of the similarities and differences between science and art is presented for debate.
Readership: Students and professionals in the fields of science and theatre, as well as people who are interested in these two fields.

CHEMISTRYThe Impure Science
(2nd Edition)by Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent (Université Paris I La Sorbonne, France) & Jonathan Simon (Université Lyon 1, France)
Reviews of the First Edition:
“In this book Bensaude-Vincent and Simon offer up a refreshing and innovative introduction to the
history and philosophy of chemistry, the like of which is not to be found anywhere in the extant
literature … the authors locate chemistry squarely in the material and social worlds of its practices,
and a sustained commitment to that contextualization gives their philosophical discourse a
distinctive flavour.
This book is not only an exciting addition to the literature in the history and philosophy of chemistry,
but a great contribution to the philosophy and history of science and technology in general.”
Hasok Chang
Hans Rausing Professor of History and Philosophy of Science
University of Cambridge
“In clear and simple prose the authors provide a richly historically-informed interpretation of the
philosophy of chemistry for student and scholar alike. Underlying the whole book such apparent
contradictions as the tension between beneficial claims and environmental criticisms are treated as
fruitful sources of insight for a new perspective on science.” Dr Robert Bud
Keeper of Science and Medicine
The Science Museum, London
What do you associate with chemistry? Explosions, innovative materials, plastics, pollution? The
public’s confused and contradictory conception of chemistry as basic science, industrial producer
and polluter contributes to what we present in this book as chemistry’s image as an impure
science. Historically, chemistry has always been viewed as impure both in terms of its academic
status and its role in transforming modern society. While exploring the history of this science
we argue for a characteristic philosophical approach that distinguishes chemistry from physics.
This reflection leads us to a philosophical stance that we characterise as operational realism. In
this new expanded edition we delve deeper into the questions of properties and potentials that
are so important for this philosophy that is based on the manipulation of matter rather than the
construction of theories.

DESIGN AND APPLICATIONS OF SINGLE-SITE HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTSContributions to Green Chemistry, Clean Technology and Sustainabilityby Sir John Meurig Thomas (University of Cambridge, UK)
“This book will certainly become a milestone in the attempts to develop unifying concepts in catalysis.” Gerhard Ertl, Nobel Laureate, Chemistry, 2007
“A true marriage of the practical and the fundamental, John Thomas’s masterly account of single-site heterogeneous catalysts, a remarkably effective form of matter guiding desired chemical transformation, is a sheer joy to read. With the synthetic flair of Humphry Davy and the physical brilliance of his hero Faraday, we are led by the author to a feast of contemporary masterworks of chemical reactivity, prodded, by design, into the service of humanity.” Roald Hoffmann
Nobel Laureate, Chemistry, 1981
“Catalysis is that crucial process that strongly increases the efficiency of chemical reactions in living organisms as well as in industry. It thus also greatly contributes to sustainability through conservation of resources and energy. Sir John Thomas, leader in the field, provides a perceptive view unifying the different areas from biology to sustainability.” Jean-Marie Lehn
Nobel Laureate, Chemistry, 1987 Honorary Professor, Collège du France
“This beautifully written text by a world-leading expert in catalysis constitutes a succinct account of the new approaches that are required to meet the challenges posed by the need for clean technology and the sustainable use of natural resources. It is warmly recommended as a guide to both beginners and experts who wish to address the increasing necessity to pursue ‘green’ chemistry.” Michel Che
President-Founder of European Federation of Catalysis Societies (EFCATS) Past President of International Association of Catalysis Societies (IACS)
“This book provides a highly readable and wide-ranging overview of the fascinating landscape of contemporary catalysis.”
Martyn Poliakoff CBE FRS Professor of Chemistry, University of Nottingham
Foreign Secretary of the Royal Society
“Understanding and controlling catalysis at the molecular level is one of the grand challenges of contemporary physical and biomolecular sciences. This excellent volume provides a uniquely comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art in this exciting and rapidly developing field, and profits from the unrivalled insight of the author into catalytic science.” Richard Catlow FRS
Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University College London
“Chemical reactions are hugely important to society — chemists make things that people need through greener, cleaner and less energy-consuming processes. Catalysis is therefore now even more important. John Meurig Thomas is internationally recognised as the fount of all knowledge here, which is why his excellent treatise is so valuable. It is a jolly good read as well!” Sir John Cadogan FRS
former Director of Research, British Petroleum Co first Director General, UK Research Councils
For far too long chemists and industrialists have relied on the use of aggressive reagents such as nitric and sulphuric acids, permanganates and dichromates to prepare the massive quantities of both bulk and fine chemicals that are needed for the maintenance of civilised life — materials such as fuels, fabrics, foodstuffs, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals. Such aggressive reagents generate vast quantities of environmentally harmful and often toxic by-products, including the oxides of nitrogen, of metal oxides and carbon dioxide.
Now, owing to recent advances made in the synthesis of nanoporous solids, it is feasible to design new solid catalysts that enable benign, mild oxidants to be used, frequently without utilising solvents, to manufacture the products that the chemical, pharmaceutical, agro- and bio-chemical industries require. These new solid agents are designated single-site heterogeneous catalysts (SSHCs). Their principal characteristics are that all the active sites present in the high-area solids are identical in their atomic environment and hence in their energy of interaction with reactants, just as in enzymes.
Single-site heterogeneous catalysts now occupy a position of growing importance both academically and in their potential for commercial exploitation. This text, the only one devoted to such catalysts, dwells both on principles of design and on applications, such as the benign synthesis of nylon 6 and vitamin B3. It equips the reader with unifying insights required for future catalytic adventures in the quest for sustainability in the materials used by humankind.
Anyone acquainted with the language of molecules, including undergraduates in the physical and biological sciences, as well as graduates in engineering and materials science, should be able to assimilate the principles and examples presented in this book. Inter alia, it describes how clean technology and ‘green’ processes may be carried out in an environmentally responsible manner.

FROM STARS TO STALAGMITESHow Everything Connectsby Paul S Braterman (University of Glasgow, UK)
“This highly readable book does an excellent job of explaining scientific concepts in plain language, and brilliantly connects social history with scientific history and concepts. Strongly recommended for readers of all backgrounds.” Oscar Liu
Senior Principal Scientist, Merck
“It’s a terrific read and the idea of intertwining the facts of chemistry with the history and personalities of the scientists who discovered it works brilliantly.” John Wiltshire
Systems Engineer, Nelson Gold Medallist for Creativity
“Your writings are a wonderful compilation of chemistry, history, and human endeavors. The chapter on Haber was superb! … This text is something that every chemist should read!” Prof Diana Mason
Regional Director and Associated Chemistry Teachers of Texas, University of North Texas
“Getting to know of atoms and molecules and their motions was not easy — Braterman pulls us into the story of the people who got us that hard-won knowledge. A superb combination of history and scientific explanation!” Roald Hoffmann
Nobel Laureate Chemist and Writer
“Using an historical approach, From Stars to Stalagmites teaches about science in an engaging and fun manner that should appeal to interested lay readers and professionals alike.” Richard Hirsh
Professor of History of Technology, Virginia Tech
Feynman once selected, as the single most important statement in science, that everything is made of atoms. It follows that the properties of everything depend on how these atoms are joined together, giving rise to the vast field we know of today as chemistry. In this unique book specifically written to bridge the gap between chemistry and the layman, Braterman has put together a series of linked essays on chemistry related themes that are particularly engaging.
The book begins with the age of the earth, and concludes with the life cycle of stars. In between, there are atoms old and new, the ozone hole mystery and how it was solved, synthetic fertilisers and explosives, reading the climate record, the extraction of metals, the wetness of water, and how the greenhouse effect on climate really works. A chapter in praise of uncertainty leads on to the “fuzziness” and sharing of electrons, and from there to molecular shape, grass-green and blood-red, the wetness of water, and molecular recognition as the basis of life.
Organised in such a way as to illustrate and develop underlying principles and approaches, this book will appeal to anyone interested in chemistry, as well as its history and key personalities. Where many other titles have failed, this book succeeds brilliantly in capturing the spirit and essence of chemistry and delivering the science in easily digestible terms.
Readership: Intellectually curious non-scientists, scientists who are interested in the wider context of chemistry, and (perhaps most important) teachers at all levels who wish to show their classes that chemistry is not a mass of dead data, but a vibrant cultural activity.

NONADIABATIC TRANSITIONConcepts, Basic Theories and Applications
(2nd Edition)by Hiroki Nakamura (Institute for Molecular Science, National Institutes of Natural Sciences, Okazaki, Japan & National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan)
Nonadiabatic transition is a highly multidisciplinary concept and phenomenon, constituting a fundamental mechanism of state and phase changes in various dynamical processes of physics, chemistry and biology, such as molecular dynamics, energy relaxation, chemical reaction, and electron and proton transfer. Control of molecular processes by laser fields is also an example of time-dependent nonadiabatic transition.
In this new edition, the original chapters are updated to facilitate enhanced understanding of the concept and applications. Three new chapters — comprehension of nonadiabatic chemical dynamics, control of chemical dynamics, and manifestation of molecular functions — are also added.
Readership: Graduate Students and researchers in molecular science, physical chemistry, chemical dynamics, atomic and molecular physics, theoretical chemistry and physics, condensed matter and statistical physics, organic- and biochemistry.

QUANTUM CHEMISTRYA Unified Approach
(2nd Edition)by David B Cook (University of Sheffield, UK)
Review of the First Edition“The text is written in an easy-to-access style that is broken down into clear chapters of progression … would consider the book to be valuable reading for anyone on a chemistry degree, or a degree in a related subject … first year students in particular would welcome this text as a valuable guide to navigating the fields of chemistry, as it addresses the eternal question of students encountering quantum chemistry for the first time … It should be essential reading for anyone who wishes to become an educator in the field of chemistry.” Reviews
This book is a presentation of a qualitative theory of chemical bonding, stressing the physical processes which occur on bond formation. It differs from most (if not all) other books in that it does not seek to “rationalise” the phenomena of bonding by a series of mnemonic rules. A principal feature is a unified and consistent treatment across all types of bonding in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry.
Each chapter has an Assignment Section containing “problems” which might be usefully attempted to improve the understanding of the new material in that chapter.
The new edition has had several appendices added which give support to concepts which, if included in the main text, would have hindered the main thrust of the presentation. These new appendices are an attempt to clarify oversights and errors which have been tacitly ignored and which have now become part of the conventional wisdom.

UNDERSTANDING ADVANCED ORGANIC AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRYThe Learners’ Approachby Kim Seng Chan (Raffles Institution, Singapore) & Jeanne Tan (Raffles Institution, Singapore)
Written for students taking either the University of Cambridge A-level examinations or the International Baccalaureate examinations, this textbook covers essential topics under both stipulated chemistry syllabi. The chapters on analytical techniques are also very enlightening to students doing higher level biology courses where a good understanding of the theoretical background of common analytical techniques is required. The book is written in such a way as to guide the reader through the understanding and applications of essential chemical concepts by introducing a discourse feature — the asking and answering of questions — that stimulates coherent thinking and hence, elucidates ideas. Based on the Socratic Method, questions are implanted throughout the book to help facilitate the reader’s development in forming logical conclusions of concepts. The book helps students to master fundamental chemical concepts in a simple way.
Topics are explored through an explanatory and inquiry-based approach. They are interrelated and easy to understand, with succinct explanations/examples being included, especially in areas that students frequently find difficult. Topics address the whys and hows behind key concepts to be mastered, so that the concepts are made understandable and intuitive for students. The focus is on conceptual learning so as to equip students with knowledge for critical learning and problem solving.
Existing A-level textbooks and guidebooks generally introduce concepts in a matter-of-fact manner. This book adds a unique pedagogical edge which few can rival. Through their many years of teaching experience, the authors have acquired an acute awareness of students’ common misconceptions which are relayed through the questions and thus help to reinforce concepts learnt.
Readership: Junior college students and teachers.
THE PERIODIC TABLE AND A MISSED NOBEL PRIZEby Ulf Lagerkvist (Gothenburg University, Sweden) & edited by Erling Norrby (The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Sweden)
“This is a fascinating account of how groundbreaking scientists think and work. This is the insider’s view of the process and demands made on the experts of the Nobel Foundation who assess the originality and significance of research.” Professor Sir Aaron Klug
Order of Merit, Fellow of the Royal Society, Nobel Laureate
“Lagerkvist, who was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and participated in judging nominations for the chemistry prize, concludes ‘It is in the nature of the Nobel Prize that there will always be a number candidates who obviously deserve to be rewarded but never get the accolade’. He makes the case that failing to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Dmitri Mendeleev’s for his conception of the Periodic Table of the Elements was a gross injustice.”
Professor Emeritus Paul Berg Stanford University School of Medicine
“This book is intended for nonprofessional readers. Focussing on the prominent chemist Dmitri Mendeleev it describes how the Nobel Committee struggled in its selection of the prime candidate to the 1906 Nobel Prize in chemistry. The reasons why Mendeleev, regrettably, never received the prize are presented.” Professor Emeritus Hideki Shirakawa
University of Tsukuba
In a relatively brief but masterful recounting, Professor Ulf Lagerkvist traces the origins and seminal developments in the field of chemistry, highlighting the discoveries and personalities of the individuals who transformed the ancient myths of the Greeks, the musings of the alchemists, the mystique of phlogiston into the realities and the laws governing the properties and behavior of the elements; in short, how chemistry became a true science. A centerpiece of this historical journey was the triumph by Dmitri Mendeleev who conceived the Periodic Law of the Elements, the relation between the properties of the elements and their atomic weights but more precisely their atomic number. Aside from providing order to the elements known at the time, the law predicted the existence and atomic order of elements not then known but were discovered soon after.
An underlying but explicit intent of Lagerkist’s survey is to address what he believes was a gross injustice in denying Mendeleev the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905 and again in 1906. Delving into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ detailed records concerning the nominations, Lagerkvist reveals the judging criteria and the often heated and prejudicial arguments favoring and demeaning the contributions of the competing contenders of those years. Lagerkvist, who was a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and has participated in judging nominations for the chemistry prize, concludes “It is in the nature of the Nobel Prize that there will always be a number candidates who obviously deserve to be rewarded but never get the accolade” — Mendeleev was one of those.

ARISTOTLE’S LAPTOPThe Discovery of our Informational Mindby Igor Aleksander (Imperial College London, UK) & Helen Morton (Imperial College London, UK)
Aristotle’s convincing philosophy is likely to have shaped (even indirectly) many of our current
beliefs, prejudices and attitudes to life. This includes the way in which our mind (that is, our
capacity to have private thoughts) appears to elude a scientific description. This book is about
a scientific ingredient that was not available to Aristotle: the science of information. Would the
course of the philosophy of the mind have been different had Aristotle pronounced that the matter
of mind was information? This “mind is information” assertion is often heard in contemporary
debates, and this book explores the verities and falsehoods of this proposition.
Readership: Philosophers, scientists and those interested in consciousness and machine
consciousness; readers of multidisciplinary books on machine analyses of consciousness.
CONSCIOUSNESS AND ROBOT SENTIENCEby Pentti Olavi Antero Haikonen (University of Illinois at Springfield, USA)
Robots are becoming more human, but could they also become sentient and have human-like
consciousness?
What is consciousness, exactly?
It is a fact that our thoughts and consciousness are based on the neural activity of the brain. It
is also a fact that we do not perceive our brain activity as it really is — patterns of neural firings.
Instead, we perceive our sensations and thoughts apparently as they are. What kind of condition
would transform the neural activity into this kind of internal appearance? This is the basic problem
of consciousness.
The author proposes an explanation that also provides preconditions for true conscious cognition —
the requirement of a direct perceptive system with inherent sub-symbolic and symbolic information
processing. Associative neural information processing with distributed signal representations is
introduced as a method that satisfies these requirements.
Conscious robot cognition also calls for information integration and sensorimotor integration. This
requirement is satisfied by the Haikonen Cognitive Architecture (HCA).
This book demystifies both the enigmatic philosophical issues of consciousness and the practical
engineering issues of conscious robots by presenting them in an easy-to-understand manner for
the benefit of students, researchers, philosophers and engineers in the field.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ANALYSIS OF ALGORITHMS(2nd Edition)by Michael Soltys (McMaster University, Canada)
A successor to the first edition, this updated and revised book is a great companion guide for
students and engineers alike, specifically software engineers who design reliable code. While
succinct, this edition is mathematically rigorous, covering the foundations of both computer
scientists and mathematicians with interest in algorithms.
Besides covering the traditional algorithms of Computer Science such as Greedy, Dynamic
Programming and Divide & Conquer, this edition goes further by exploring two classes of algorithms
that are often overlooked: Randomised and Online algorithms — with emphasis placed on the
algorithm itself.
The coverage of both fields are timely as the ubiquity of Randomised algorithms are expressed
through the emergence of cryptography while Online algorithms are essential in numerous fields
as diverse as operating systems and stock market predictions.
While being relatively short to ensure the essentiality of content, a strong focus has been placed
on self-containment, introducing the idea of pre/post-conditions and loop invariants to readers of
all backgrounds. Containing programming exercises in Python, solutions will also be placed on the
book’s website.

MULTIMODAL INTERACTIVE HANDWRITTEN TEXT TRANSCRIPTIONby Verónica Romero (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain), Alejandro Héctor Toselli (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain) & Enrique Vidal (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain)
This book presents an interactive multimodal approach for efficient transcription of handwritten
text images. This approach, rather than full automation, assists the expert in the recognition and
transcription process.
Until now, handwritten text recognition (HTR) systems are far from being perfect and heavy human
intervention is often required to check and correct the results of such systems. The interactive
scenario studied in this book combines the efficiency of automatic handwriting recognition systems
with the accuracy of the experts, leading to a cost-effective perfect transcription of the handwritten
text images.
The interactive system here allows the user to repeatedly interact with the system. Hence, the
quality and ergonomy of the interactive process is crucial for the success of the system. Moreover,
more ergonomic multimodal interfaces are used to obtain an easier and more comfortable human-
machine interaction.

THIS PERVASIVE DAYThe Potential and Perils of Pervasive Computingedited by Jeremy Pitt (Imperial College London, UK)
Imagine a world where your clothes sense your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature.
Suppose the sensors transmit this information to ‘the cloud’, continuously and unobtrusively.
Suppose artificial intelligence in ‘the cloud’ detects an anomaly. Suppose it tells your doctor:
sighs of relief all round. But then suppose it tells an actuary, who tells your insurer, who tells your
employer …
This is the world of pervasive adaptation.
This Pervasive Day explores the potential — and perils — of daily living with pervasive adaptive
computing. This is the result of saturating ourselves and our physical environment with sensors,
cameras and devices, all connected to and inter-connected by global networks and computers,
which can run increasingly intelligent machine-learning and data fusion algorithms on datasets that
could be generated by the entire human population.
This book takes as its unifying theme Ira Levin’s 1970 science fiction novel This Perfect Day to
expose both potential innovations and controversial social issues. It explores the science and
technology of pervasive adaptation through a human-centred and socio-technical perspective within
the cultural, ethical and legal context of contemporary life. It discusses how pervasive adaptation
could provide the foundations for a new range of life-enhancing and planet-saving applications
in health, sustainability and assistive living. On the other hand, with the recording, storage and
processing of every action, emotion and thought, there also arise the possibilities for unwarranted
surveillance, invasions of privacy, loss of civil liberties and commercial exploitation.
This Pervasive Day is an insightful read for anyone concerned with the social impact of technology.
Written by experienced technologists with a deep interest in computational intelligence, human-
computer interaction and ambient systems, This Pervasive Day is a remarkable single source of
reference — a fusion of several technical disciplines that makes for a broad scope of investigation
within the domains of pervasive computing.
Unifying, informative and thought-provoking, This Pervasive Day takes its place as a landmark title
that will challenge the perceptions of the technologists and policy-makers, the pragmatists and the
theorists, the doers and the thought-leaders.

ABU DHABI’S VISION 2030An Ongoing Journey of Economic Developmentby Linda Low (Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, UAE)
This book aims to tell the Abu Dhabi story in economic development, from its past dominance in
oil to its economic vision for the future. More than being an exemplar of industrial restructuring
and diversification from a resource-based to a 21st century knowledge-based economy and society,
Abu Dhabi emphasises its cultural legacy and tradition as an environmental advocate for green and
sustainable pathways. It has as many challenges as creative responses to show that its success
is not by wealth alone.
This case study unveils Abu Dhabi in particular and the rest of Arabic and GCC economic
development in general. They have all attracted foreign investment and global business, typically
as hydrocarbon-rich resource economies. Beyond that, the geoeconomics and geopolitics of the
Middle East and North Africa, with or without the Arab Spring in 2011 is in and of itself, a rich
region for multidisciplinary studies and research, not just for economics and business. With Qatar,
Abu Dhabi boasts of one of the highest per capita income in the world; therein lies a reason to
enquire about its success and pivotal role in the GCC and global contexts.

MARKET PRACTICE IN FINANCIAL MODELLINGby Chia Chiang Tan (Deutsche Bank)
“This book stands out since it covers topics often neglected but of utmost importance in derivatives
modelling (e.g., the connection between interest rates randomness and foreign exchange randomness
for long-dated FX, or the omni-present local and stochastic volatility considerations in FX or equities).
Practitioner-oriented, this book presents a framework for thinking about derivatives modelling based
on real products, and leverages mathematics to illustrate key financial concepts. The author’s first-
hand experience on the topics makes this book very clear to understand.” Marko Bastianic Director, Long-Dated FX Option Trader, Barclays Capital
“Market Practice in Financial Modelling stands out in trying to help the reader understand models
and why they are used and not just the math behind them. This book will bring tremendous value
to anyone interested in key modelling issues such as forward vol dynamics. By keeping the math as
concise as possible, the reader doesn’t lose focus and will more easily understand the bigger picture.”
Alain Chebanier Head of DBAnalytics for Europe, Deutsche Bank
“Chia Tan’s book provides a refreshing introduction to concepts of quantitative finance applied to real
world financial markets. He intuitively explains and guides the reader to tackle problems in financial
engineering with practical solutions in mind, and is mindful to point out which issues each model can
address and also the problems and limitations. Whereas mathematical elegance often overshadowed
important issues prior to the financial crisis of 2008, this is one of the first books with a chapter
explaining, in simple terms, such issues as counterparty risk, balance sheet and funding costs, and
basis risk that have become important topics to many financial institutions these days. This book will
be a valuable resource for hedge fund managers and buy-side institutions who plan to use over-the-
counter derivative products, and also as a refresher for the sell-side dealers who trade them.”
David Ha Interest Rates Trader, Goldman Sachs Japan
Written to bridge the gap between foundational quantitative finance and market practice, this book goes beyond the basics covered in most textbooks by presenting content concerning actual industry norms, thus resulting in a clearer picture of the field for the readers. These include, for instance, the practitioner’s perspective of how local versus stochastic volatility affects forward smile, or the implications of mean reversion on forward volatility.
Key considerations for modelling in rates, equities and foreign exchange are presented from the perspective of common themes across various assets, as well as their individual characteristics.
The discussion on models emphasizes the key aspects that are relevant to the pricing of different types of financial derivatives, so that the reader can observe how an appropriate choice of models is essential in reflecting the risk profile and hedging considerations for different products.
With the knowledge gleaned from this book, readers will attain a more comprehensive understanding of market practice in derivatives modelling.

ROBUST MECHANISM DESIGNThe Role of Private Information and Higher Order Beliefsby Dirk Bergemann (Yale University, USA) & Stephen Morris (Princeton University, USA)
“Equilibrium robustness in informational variables is critical, if one wants to use results from the mechanism design literature in real life applications. The papers included in the Bergemann and Morris book describe state of the art progress in this direction of research. The book is an excellent resource for established game theorists, who want to learn more about this subject; and for PhD students, who look for exciting problems to investigate.” Ehud Kalai
Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University
“This book collects together a series of papers on mechanism design written by Dirk Bergemann and Stephen Morris. It is their response to the challenge set by Robert Wilson in his eponymous doctrine: Only by repeated weakening of common knowledge assumptions will the theory approximate reality. Many scholars responded by arguing for solution concepts robust to the beliefs of the agents. The approach taken by Bergemann and Morris was radically different. They hitched their wagon to Harsany’s observation that relaxing the common knowledge assumption was equivalent to enlarging the type space. Then, they proceed to develop the properties of mechanisms that would emerge. For this reason, this collection is essential reading for any student interested in taking up the challenge of the Wilson doctrine. The introduction by itself is worth the price of admission!”
Rakesh Vohra Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University
“Mechanism design has been one of the great successes of economic theory in the last 30 years. Robust mechanism design, the study of optimal mechanisms in settings where the designer has less information about the beliefs of the agents, is the natural next step in the evolution of this field. Bergemann and Morris are two of the leading figures in developing this new theory, and this book combines many of their papers with an excellent introduction that overviews the field and explains how their papers fit together. Highly recommended to all students and practitioners of economic theory, and essential reading for would-be mechanism designers.” Drew Fudenberg
Department of Economics, Harvard University
“The question of the design of institutions has been at the center of some of the most important economic theory in the past four decades. Bergemann and Morris have made seminal contributions to the understanding of how uncertainty can and should be incorporated into mechanism design, and this volume reproduces a collection of their most important work in the area. The volume will be an important reference for those working in the area and those who wish to apply the ideas in economic models.” Andrew Postlewaite
Department of Economics, University of Pennsylvania
This volume brings together the collected contributions on the theme of robust mechanism design and robust implementation that Dirk Bergemann and Stephen Morris have been working on for the past decade. The collection is preceded by a comprehensive introductory essay, specifically written for this volume with the aim of providing the readers with an overview of the research agenda pursued in the collected papers.
The introduction selectively presents the main results of the papers, and attempts to illustrate many of them in terms of a common and canonical example, namely a single unit auction with interdependent values. It is our hope that the use of this example facilitates the presentation of the results and that it brings the main insights within the context of an important economic mechanism, namely the generalized second price auction.

ARCTIC OFFSHORE ENGINEERINGby Andrew Palmer (National University of Singapore) & Ken Croasdale (K R Croasdale & Associates Ltd, Canada)
There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic seas. The requirement
is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are
known to exist offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean
off the coast of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have
to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing
rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against
ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social
and human environment has to be understood and respected.
This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often
subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.

COASTAL AND OCEAN ENGINEERING PRACTICEedited by Young C Kim (California State University, Los Angeles, USA)
Successful coastal and ocean engineering projects rely on practical experience with technical tools
and knowledge available to the engineer. Often, problems arise from projects that are too complex
for theoretical description, which require that engineers exercise sound judgment in addition to
reliance on past practical experience.
This book focuses on the latest technology applied in design and construction, effective
engineering methodology, unique projects and problems, design and construction challenges, and
other lessons learned. In addition, unique practices in planning, design, construction, maintenance,

COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING DESIGN WITH SOLIDWORKSby Godfrey Onwubolu (Humber College of Technology & Advanced Learning, Canada)
Computer Aided Engineering Design with SolidWorks is designed both for students taking SolidWorks
courses at college and university and also for engineering designers involved or interested in
using SolidWorks for real-life applications in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and
engineering analysis. The course material is divided into two parts. Part I covers the principles
of SolidWorks, simple and advanced part modeling approaches, assembly modeling, drawing,
configurations/design tables and surface modeling. Part II covers the applications of SolidWorks
in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and engineering analysis. The manufacturing
processes applications include mold design, sheet metal parts design, die design, and weldments.
The mechanical systems applications include routing: piping and tubing, gears, pulleys, and chains,
cams and springs, mechanism design and analysis, threads and fastners, hinges and universal
joints. The engineering analysis application includes finite element analysis.
This text book is unique because it is one of the very few to thoroughly cover the applications
of SolidWorks in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and engineering analysis as
presented in Part I.
It is written using a hands-on approach in which students can follow the steps described in each
chapter to model and assemble parts, produce drawings and be involved in the applications
on their own with little assistance from their instructors during each teaching session or in the
computer laboratory. There are several pictorial descriptions of the steps involved in every stage of
part modeling, assembly modeling, drawing details, and applications presented in this text book.

COASTAL DYNAMICSby Willem T Bakker (Delft Hydraulics, Netherlands)
Our world is constantly changing, governed by continuity, dynamic interactions and boundary
conditions. For many coasts, the common denominators contributing to these changes are sand,
waves, tides, salt gradients, and human interaction, all themes that are treated in this valuable
textbook.
Confining itself to essentials, the coverage reflects centuries of theoretical and practical knowledge
of Dutch coastal engineers. Focussing, where applicable, on linear theory, the book shows how the
essentials of local coastal behavior can be reproduced and predicted.
Contents: The Dutch Coast: A Coastal Engineering View; Line Theories in Coastal Dynamics
— Determination of Coastal Constants; Line Theories in Coastal Dynamics — Verification in
Experiment and Nature; Coastal Dynamics as a Diffusion Problem; Data Assimilation with Kalman
Filtering; Interaction Outer Delta's and Tidal Basins — Views of a Scientific Forum; Comments.

FLOW VISUALIZATIONTechniques and Examples
(2nd Edition)edited by A J Smits (Princeton University) & T T Lim (National University of Singapore)
This is the 2nd edition of the book, Flow Visualization: Techniques and Examples, which was
published by Imperial College Press in 2000. Many of the chapters have been revised and updated
to take into consideration recent changes in a number of flow visualization and measurement
techniques, including an updated high quality flow gallery. Unique among similar publications,
this book focuses on the practical rather than theoretical aspects. Obtaining high quality flow
visualization results is, in many ways, more of an art than a science, and experience plays a key
deciding role. The depth and breadth of the material will make this book invaluable to readers of
all levels of experience in the field.

NON WEST MODERNIST PASTOn Architecture & Modernitiesedited by William S W Lim (AA Asia, Singapore & Asian Urban Lab, Singapore) & Jiat-Hwee Chang
This book provides a comprehensive historical and theoretical overview of modern architecture in regions outside the “West” — Europe and North America. It brings together contributions from leading scholars in the interdisciplinary fields of architecture history, architecture theory, area studies, sociology and cultural studies. It interrogates Eurocentric views of modern architecture as autonomous and homogeneous and posits a heteronomous and heterogeneous understanding of modern architecture. Drawing from interdisciplinary theories, this book explores the complex relations between modernism, modernity and modernization and their entanglements with colonialism and postcolonialism, nationalism and development, globalization and regionalism. Closely examining the diverse cases of architectural modernisms in China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Turkey, Brazil and South Africa, this book transcends the geographic division of labour in area studies to offer a broad comparative survey of modernisms beyond the West. It also covers heterogeneous temporalities of modernism today, tracing the continuities and discontinuities between the past and the present, from the proto-modern to the post-modern, from the west to the rest.
This book is an essential resource for understanding architectural modernism outside its “western” regions and mindsets. Its in-depth discussion and insights will be invaluable to specialists, academics and graduate students. It is also comprehensive enough to be used as a textbook for undergraduate students, and general enough for practitioners and the curious general reader.

CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY FAILURESWhy Conventional Mitigation Approaches Cannot Succeedby Howard A Latin (Rutgers University, USA)
“Howard Latin is one of the world’s most provocative and creative environmental experts. His new
book challenges the conventional consensus about climate change. It is vintage Howard Latin, and
will definitely make you think about alternative mitigation approaches.”
E Donald Elliott, Professor (adj) of Law, Yale Law School
Former General Counsel of the US EPA
“This book not only presents a compelling overview of current climate change debates and the
policies recommended to address the problems at hand, but it serves as a radical critique of these
discussions and approaches, providing alternatives to mainstream viewpoints. More than worth
reading.” Jean-Marc Coicaud, Former Director
United Nations University Office at the UN Headquarters, New York
At the recent UN Climate Change Conferences in Copenhagen, Cancun and Durban, the developed
nations promised hundreds of billions of dollars in financial aid to help developing countries
overcome global climate change dangers. The developed nations will need to spend many more
billions to limit their own greenhouse gas pollution, the main cause of global warming and climate
change. Will all this money and effort be wasted? This book argues that nearly all of the world’s
climate policy makers and expert advisors have been making tragic mistakes that ensure the
failures of climate change mitigation attempts.
The great majority of climate change programs, from American congressional bills to cap-and-
trade economic incentive schemes to the Kyoto Protocol and other international treaties, rely on
greenhouse gas emissions-reduction targets that will prove “too little, too late” by deferring strict
pollution controls too far into the future. The inadequate emissions-reduction measures also will
not be able to bridge the gap between the highest priorities of developed and developing nations.
Vast discharges of greenhouse gases authorized by weak emissions-reduction programs in the next
several decades virtually guarantee that the cumulative concentration of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere will keep increasing while climate change continues to grow worse.
Rather than adopting ineffectual emissions-reduction programs that cannot limit the cumulative
concentration of greenhouse gases in the air, this book proposes a shift to a “clean” technology-
replacement strategy that could support current lifestyles and expanding economic development
without further damaging our climate. The only way to reduce the greenhouse gas levels in the
atmosphere enough to decrease climate change hazards is to replace large pollution sources as
rapidly as feasible in as many industrial sectors and geographic regions as possible with “clean”
alternative technologies, processes, and methods.
Readership: Policymakers, administrative officials, scholars, students, and general readers
interested in environmental, political, economic, legal, and international dimensions of global
climate change problems.

CANCER MANAGEMENT WITH CHINESE MEDICINEby Rencun Yu (Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China) & Hai Hong (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)
Significant advances made by Western medicine in the treatment of cancer are well-documented, but little has been written in English on complementary holistic treatment with Chinese medical methods that manage its symptoms and ameliorate the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This book explains the complementary approach using cases from the medical files of Professor Rencun Yu, who was trained in Western medical oncology but also practices Chinese medicine. In addition, introductory chapters explain the basic principles of Chinese medicine, while other chapters cover the prevention of cancers through appropriate nutrition and living habits. The book should command the attention of medical professionals as well as the layperson interested in preventing and understanding the illness.
There is no equivalent book in English that so skillfully combines an introduction to Chinese medical principles and cancer management for the general reader with detailed clinical studies of the crucial complementary role played by Chinese medicine in Western treatments for cancer patients.

A CLINICAL HANDBOOK IN ADOLESCENT MEDICINEA Guide for Health Professionals Who See Adolescents and Young Adultsby Kate Steinbeck (University of Sydney, Australia) & Michael Kohn (The Children’s Hospitalat Westmead, Australia)
This book will be extremely useful to any health professional who deals with adolescents and young adults, whether in paediatric or adult acute care facilities or as primary care clinicians. As a handbook, it provides ready access to clinically relevant, adolescent specific information for anyone who treats young people.
The book is important because it fills a gap in the market. Most adolescent texts are written by paediatricians for paediatricians. This book has a broader scope in two important aspects of adolescent medicine. First, many adolescents are looked after by adult trained clinicians who have not had specific training in adolescent health and secondly, the conditions that are important in adolescents are also those that are important in young adults. With the increased survival rates in chronic illness over the last few decades, it is becoming even more important for adult clinicians to be more familiar with conditions that have their origins in childhood.
Each chapter is written by an expert in their field, with a highly practical approach and provides an excellent and easy way to increase clinical skills.

DISCOVERIES IN PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCESby Popat N Patil (The Ohio State University, USA)
Throughout history, the perpetuation of species, the need for survival, and human curiosity, intelligence and skills provided the basis for the development of drug science. This unique book, Discoveries in Pharmacological Sciences, contains the history of herbal medicine as it emerged about 5,000 years ago. Recent discoveries in genetics are integrated with the observations in the past. An understanding of the history of drugs and toxic chemicals is essential for the proper utility of these substances by the population at large. The book is written with the purpose to familiarize drug research of the investigators in chemical, pharmaceutical, pharmacological, and biomedical sciences. It is important to note that plants containing morphine, quinine, physostigmine, pilocarpine, atropine, d-tubocurarine, reserpine, tetrahydrocannabinol, cardiac glycosides, ephedrine and colchicine were used by various cultures for centuries. Since 1805 pure, active, therapeutic constituents were isolated and chemically characterized. Parallel to these developments, the science of human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and pharmacology has advanced. New synthetic drugs were discovered. The chemistry of perfumes and sensory functions including memory were elucidated. The history of fascinating discoveries made by scientists of Nobel repute was documented. Better testing methods were developed. The causes of many diseases were better understood. Drug laws were instituted a century ago. The pharmaceutical industry flourished. The text provides a panoramic view of the understanding of when, where, who, how and why drugs were developed. Educational aspects of teaching pharmacological sciences are reviewed. The historical account will be invaluable to graduate students and creative scientists, who can prepare for the future.
The reading of Discoveries in Pharmacological Sciences will satisfy the intellectual curiosity of investigators. Understanding of Discoveries in Pharmacological Sciences will provide a platform to judge the importance of the personalized medicine of tomorrow. Scattered classical information about drug sciences is effectively condensed here. The development of the scientific thoughts and creativity of the investigators through the ages in drug research are presented admirably.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS(2nd Edition)by Nigel G Halford (Rothamsted Research, UK)
“A slim volume discussing a large and increasingly important topic, Nigel Halford’s book is both
concise and comprehensive … This book will be tremendously valuable for students and for the
interested layperson — highly recommended!”
Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture
Plant molecular biology came to the fore in the early 1980s and there has been tremendous
growth in the subject since then. The study of plant genes and genomes and the development
of techniques for the incorporation of novel or modified genes into plants eventually led to the
commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) crops in the mid-1990s. This was seen as the start
of a biotechnological revolution in plant breeding. However, plant biotechnology has become one
of the hottest debates of the age and, in Europe at least, one of the greatest challenges that plant
scientists have ever faced.
This book covers the history and development of the science and techniques that underpin plant
biotechnology. It describes the GM crops that are or have been grown commercially around the
world, including failures as well as successes, and the new varieties that are being developed.
The safety record of GM crops is reviewed together with the legislation that has been adopted to
cover their use. The book also deals with the concerns of consumers, the GM crop debate and
the prospects for the technology. In the second edition, sections on current GM crops and future
developments in plant biotechnology have been greatly expanded, while those on techniques,
legislation and the GM crop debate have also been updated.
The book is a concise, comprehensive and readable study that is accessible to a general
readership with a scientific background but also provides useful information for the specialist.

HISTORY OF BRITISH NEUROLOGYby F Clifford Rose (Imperial College School of Medicine, UK)
Diseases of the nervous system are a relatively small but vitally important part of medicine. There
was no scientific basis for diagnosis or treatment until the seventeenth century when Dr Thomas
Willis (1621–1675) and his team tackled anatomy by dissection of the nervous system, physiology
by animal experiments and pathology by post-mortem analysis. It was Willis who first used the word
“neurology” and his team, who were among the founders of the Royal Society, included Christopher
Wren who, besides being famous as an architect of London’s churches, drew the first modern
diagram of the human brain. Developments in our knowledge of the nervous system in the following
centuries, and the unique importance of clinical neurology, became globally recognised through the
work of Whytt, Heberden, Hughlings Jackson, Gowers and many others.
The work and discoveries of these eminent specialists were extended with the introduction of
such neurosciences as neurophysiology, neuropathology and neuro-radiology, and this is the first
comprehensive account of a battle with the unknown by determined practitioners.

INFORMATION THEORY AND EVOLUTION(2nd Edition)by John Scales Avery (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)
Information Theory and Evolution discusses the phenomenon of life, including its origin and
evolution (and also human cultural evolution), against the background of thermodynamics,
statistical mechanics, and information theory. Among the central themes is the seeming
contradiction between the second law of thermodynamics and the high degree of order and
complexity produced by living systems. This paradox has its resolution in the information content
of the Gibbs free energy that enters the biosphere from outside sources, as the author will show.
The role of information in human cultural evolution is another focus of the book.
The first edition of Information Theory and Evolution made a strong impact on thought in the field
by bringing together results from many disciplines. The new second edition offers updated results
based on reports of important new research in several areas, including exciting new studies of
the human mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal DNA. Another extensive discussion featured in the
second edition is contained in a new appendix devoted to the relationship of entropy and Gibbs
free energy to economics. This appendix includes a review of the ideas of Alfred Lotka, Frederick
Soddy, Nicholas Georgiescu-Roegen and Herman E. Daly, and discusses the relevance of these
ideas to the current economic crisis.
The new edition discusses current research on the origin of life, the distinction between
thermodynamic information and cybernetic information, new DNA research and human prehistory,
developments in current information technology, and the relationship between entropy and
economics.

AN INTRODUCTION TO METABOLIC AND CELLULAR ENGINEERING(Second Edition)by S Cortassa (Johns Hopkins University, USA), M A Aon (Johns Hopkins University, USA), A A Iglesias (Universidad del Litoral, Argentina), J C Aon (GlaxoSmithKline, USA) & D Lloyd (Cardiff University, UK)
Metabolic and Cellular Engineering (MCE) is more than an exciting scientific enterprise. It
has become the cornerstone for coping with the challenges ahead of mankind. Continuous
developments, new concepts, and technological innovations will enable us to deal with emerging
challenges, and solve problems once thought impossible ten years ago. Challenges in MCE are
broad- from unraveling fundamental aspects of cellular function to meeting unsatiated energy and
food demands that are rising in parallel with population growth.
In charting the progress of MCE during the last decade, we could not help but feel in awe of the
enormous strides of progress made from the nascent Metabolic Engineering to the Systems
Bioengineering of today. The burgeoning availability of genomic sequences from diverse species
has been spectacular. It has become the engine that drives the genetic means for the modification
of existing organisms and the generation of synthetic, man-made ones. From the initial attempts at
purposeful genetic modification of a cell for the production of valuable compounds, we have now
moved on to changing microbes genetically or metabolically.
The arsenal of experimental and theoretical tools available for Metabolic and Cellular Engineering
has expanded enormously, driven by the re-emergence of Physiology as Systems Biology. The revival
of the concept of networks fueled by new developments has become central to Systems Biology.
Networks represent an integrative vision of how processes of disparate nature relate to each other,
and as such is becoming a key analytical and conceptual tool for MCE. This book reflects and
addresses all these ongoing changes while providing the essential conceptual and analytical tools
needed to understand and work in the MCE research field.

THE MIF HANDBOOKedited by Richard Bucala (Yale University School of Medicine, USA)
The role of the cytokine, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), in the immune response
and in the immunopathogenesis of different inflammatory, autoimmune, and infectious disorders
is now well established. The aim of this handbook is to provide an authoritative volume covering all
aspects of MIF, from basic molecular biology to structure-function relationships, pathophysiology,
genetics, and drug development.
Recent studies continue to broaden considerably the role of MIF in both normal physiology
and pathology, which range from such diverse areas as oncogenesis, cardiac physiology, and
neurodevelopment. MIF’s molecular mechanism of action in these contexts is becoming increasingly
understood and the role of variant MIF alleles in different conditions continues to be defined.
Unique structural features of the protein, such as an intrinsic catalytic activity, and the continuing
elucidation of its receptor-dependent mechanism of action offer attractive opportunities for
therapeutic intervention. This volume will provide a comprehensive synthesis of the state of the
art of MIF science.

SURGICAL TALKLecture Notes in Undergraduate Surgery
(3rd Edition)by Andrew Goldberg (The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Trust, Stanmore, UK & University College London, UK) & Gerard Stansby (Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK & Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)
This textbook is an introduction and guide to undergraduate surgery. It has been a bestseller since
its first edition in 2001.
The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better students reaching the end of their undergraduate training. Avoiding a book that is too cumbersome, we have tried to make this volume readable and enjoyable, using various techniques to help the reader remember key facts: the text has been deliberately written in a tutorial-like story format as opposed to a set of lists, since this makes it easier to understand and remember.
In addition to general surgery, the book contains sections on trauma, orthopaedics, urology and ENT, making it the only comprehensive textbook for medical students wishing to learn top tips in surgery.
Subjects that are poorly covered in other main texts — such as fluid balance management and minor surgical procedures — are dealt with in a tutorial fashion in this book, and there is a section on how to problem-solve even in the context of areas unknown to the student.
Each chapter is written by an authoritative author, alongside the book editors, and they have ensured it remains in the spirit of the bestselling previous editions.
Readership: Third, fourth and final year undergraduates (UK), medical students form countries with similar training to the UK (such as Singapore, Australia, South Africa, India and Pakistan), junior doctors, professions allied to medicine, e.g. physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and specialist nurses.
SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY — A PRIMERedited by Paul S Freemont (Imperial College, UK) & Richard I Kitney (Imperial College, UK)
Synthetic Biology — A Primer gives a broad overview of the emerging field of synthetic biology and the foundational concepts on which it is built. It will be of interest to final year undergraduates, postgraduates and established researchers who are interested in learning about this exciting new field. The book introduces readers to fundamental concepts in molecular biology and engineering and then explores the two major themes for synthetic biology, namely ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ engineering approaches. ‘Top-down’ engineering utilises a conceptual framework of engineering and systematic design to build new biological systems by integrating robustly characterised biological parts into an existing system through the use of extensive mathematical modelling. The ‘bottom-up’ approach involves the design and building of synthetic protocells using basic chemical and biochemical building blocks from scratch. Exemplars of cutting-edge applications designed using synthetic biology principles are presented, including the production of novel biofuels from renewable feedstocks, microbial synthesis of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, and the design and implementation of biosensors to detect infections and environmental waste. The book also uses the Internationally Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition to illustrate the power of synthetic biology as an innovative research and training science. Finally, the primer includes a chapter on the ethical, legal and societal issues surrounding synthetic biology, illustrating the integration of social sciences in synthetic biology research.

ANALYSISA Gateway to Understanding Mathematicsby Seán Dineen (University College Dublin, Ireland)
This book shows that it is possible to provide a fully rigorous treatment of calculus for those
planning a career in an area that uses mathematics regularly (e.g., statistics, mathematics,
economics, finance, engineering, etc.). It reveals to students on the ways to approach and
understand mathematics. It covers efficiently and rigorously the differential and integral calculus,
and its foundations in mathematical analysis. It also aims at a comprehensive, efficient, and
rigorous treatment by introducing all the concepts succinctly. Experience has shown that this
approach, which treats understanding on par with technical ability, has long term benefits for
students.

A CALCULUS OF IDEASA Mathematical Study of Human Thoughtby Ulf Grenander (Brown University, USA)
This monograph reports a thought experiment with a mathematical structure intended to illustrate
the workings of a mind. It presents a mathematical theory of human thought based on pattern
theory with a graph-based approach to thinking. The method illustrated and produced by extensive
computer simulations is related to neural networks. Based mainly on introspection, it is speculative
rather than empirical such that it differs radically in attitude from the conventional wisdom of
current cognitive science.

EVERYDAY PROBABILITY AND STATISTICSHealth, Elections, Gambling and War
(2nd Edition)by Michael Mark Woolfson (University of York, UK)
Probability and statistics impinge on the life of the average person in a variety of ways — as is
suggested by the title of this book. Very often information is provided that is factually accurate
but intended to give a biased view. This book presents the important results of probability and
statistics without making heavy mathematical demands on the reader. It should enable an
intelligent reader to properly assess statistical information and to understand that the same
information can be presented in different ways.
In this second edition the author presents a new chapter exploring science and society including
the way that scientists communicate with the public on current topics, such as global warming.
The book also investigates pensions and pension policy, and how they are influenced by changing
actuarial tables.

INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL LOGICby Michał Walicki (University of Bergen, Norway)
This is a systematic and well-paced introduction to mathematical logic. Excellent as a course text,
the book presupposes only elementary background and can be used also for self-study by more
ambitious students.
Starting with the basics of set theory, induction and computability, it covers propositional and
first-order logic — their syntax, reasoning systems and semantics. Soundness and completeness
results for Hilbert’s and Gentzen’s systems are presented, along with simple decidability
arguments. The general applicability of various concepts and techniques is demonstrated by
highlighting their consistent reuse in different contexts.
Unlike in most comparable texts, presentation of syntactic reasoning systems precedes the
semantic explanations. The simplicity of syntactic constructions and rules — of a high, though
often neglected, pedagogical value — aids students in approaching more complex semantic
issues. This order of presentation also brings forth the relative independence of syntax from
the semantics, helping to appreciate the importance of the purely symbolic systems, like those
underlying computers.
An overview of the history of logic precedes the main text, while informal analogies precede
introduction of most central concepts. These informal aspects are kept clearly apart from the
technical ones. Together, they form a unique text which may be appreciated equally by lecturers
and students occupied with mathematical precision, as well as those interested in the relations of
logical formalisms to the problems of computability and the philosophy of logic.

A New Perspective on Transportby Supriyo Datta (Purdue University, USA)
Everyone is familiar with the amazing performance of a modern smart phone, powered by a billion-
plus nanotransistors, each having an active region that is barely a few hundred atoms in length.
These lecture notes are about a less-appreciated by-product of the microelectronics revolution,
namely the deeper understanding of current flow, and device operation that it has enabled, which
forms the basis for a new approach to transport problems.
The book assumes very little background beyond linear algebra and differential equations, and is
intended to be accessible to anyone in any branch of science or engineering.
An online course based on these notes is available through nanoHUB-U. Readers interested in
gaining access to that course and to related video lectures, tutorials and discussions can check
our website https://nanohub.org/topics/LessonsfromNanoscience.
Readers are also encouraged to join a continuing discussion forum keyed to these lecture notes.

40 YEARS OF BEREZINSKII–KOSTERLITZ–THOULESS THEORYedited by Jorge V José (Indiana University, USA)
On the 40th anniversary of the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless Theory (BKT), this informative
volume looks back at some of the developments and achievements and varied physics applications
which ensued from the beautiful BKT vortex-unbinding seminal idea.
During the last four decades, BKT theory, which is undeniably one of the most important
developments in condensed matter and theoretical physics of the second half of the twentieth
century, has expanded widely. It has been used and extended from many different theoretical
and experimental perspectives. New and unexpected features have been uncovered from the
BKT theory. Since its inception, apart from applications in condensed matter physics, the theory
has been actively applied in other branches of physics, such as high energy physics, atomic
physics, nuclear physics, statistical physics, nonlinear systems, etc. This makes the theory an
indispensable topic for all who are involved in physics.
An international team of experts, each of whom has left his mark on the developments of this
remarkable theory and experimental applications, contribute both historical essays and more
detailed current technical and experimental accounts to this volume. These articles highlight the
new discoveries from the respective authors’ perspectives.
This unique volume celebrates the impact over four decades of the BKT theory on modern physics.
In addition to the historical perspective provided by Kosterlitz and Thouless’s overview, the volume
provides a comprehensive description of experimental and theoretical applications and extensions
of the BKT theory.

ABC OF PHYSICSA Very Brief Guideby Lev Okun (Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP), Russia)
This little book concentrates on the foundations of modern physics (its “ABC’s”) and its most
fundamental constants: c — the velocity of light and —h — the quantum of action.
First of all, the book is addressed to professional physicists, but in order to achieve maximal
concentration and clarity it uses the simplest (high school) mathematics. As a result many pages
of the book will be useful to college students and may appeal to a more general audience.

ACCELERATOR PHYSICS(Third Edition)by S Y Lee (Indiana University, USA)
Review of the First Edition:
“The large number of formulas and the excellent table of contents and index make the book a very
useful addition to the library of a scientist or engineer already in the field.”Physics Today
“This is a good book which goes well beyond the standard introductory text on the filed … Should
satisfy the graduate student specializing in the field and the accelerator scientist willing to cover in
major detail the fundamental aspects of the physics of particle accelerators.”
IL Nuovo Saggiatore
Research and development of high energy accelerators began in 1911. Since then, milestones
achieved are:
(1) development of high gradient dc and rf accelerators,
(2) achievement of high field magnets with excellent field quality,
(3) discovery of transverse and longitudinal beam focusing principles,
(4) invention of high power rf sources,
(5) improvement of ultra-high vacuum technology,
(6) attainment of high brightness (polarized/unpolarized) electron/ionsources,
(7) advancement of beam dynamics and beam manipulation schemes, such as beam injection,
accumulation, slow and fast extraction, beam damping and beam cooling, instability
feedback, laser-beam interaction and harvesting instability for high brilliance coherent
photon source.
The impacts of the accelerator development are evidenced by the many ground-breaking discoveries
in particle and nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, biology,
biomedical physics, nuclear medicine, medical therapy, and industrial processing. This book
is intended to be used as a graduate or senior undergraduate textbook in accelerator physics
and science. It can be used as preparatory course material in graduate accelerator physics
thesis research. The text covers historical accelerator development, transverse betatron motion,
synchrotron motion, an introduction to linear accelerators, and synchrotron radiation phenomena in
low emittance electron storage rings, introduction to special topics such as the free electron laser
and the beam-beam interaction. Attention is paid to derivation of the action-angle variables of the
phase space, because the transformation is important for understanding advanced topics such as
the collective instability and nonlinear beam dynamics. Each section is followed by exercises, which
are designed to reinforce concepts and to solve realistic accelerator design problems.

ics ADVANCED QUANTUM MECHANICS
(Second Edition)by Freeman Dyson (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, USA) translated and transcribed by David Derbes (Laboratory Schools, University of Chicago, USA)
Reviews of the First Edition
“… one can profit significantly from the insight into the physics beneath the apparatus, and the
extensive and detailed treatment of some problems. Therefore it may be very useful as an additional
source in the preparation of a course on quantum field theory … I highly recommend this book to get
a different view on quantum field theory, and also to understand how quantum field theory emerged
in its present form at all.” Mathematical Reviews
“The fame of these lectures as well as of this author, together with the enduring interest in their
contents attested by this transcription, obviously classify the book as of great interest to students
and researchers willing to hear a presentation of quantum electrodynamics from one of the founding
fathers.” Zentralblatt MATH
“This book is likely to be of interest mainly to historians of science … one thing was done rather well
was the relativistic treatment of the spectrum of the hydrogen atom, which is found algebraically
and, rather elegantly and efficiently. The treatment of fluctuations in fields had some nice points …”
CERN Courier
This invaluable volume comprises the legendary lectures on quantum electrodynamics first given
by Dyson at Cornell University in 1951. The late theorist Edwin Thompson Jaynes once remarked,
“For a generation of physicists they were the happy medium: clearer and better motivated than
Feynman, and getting to the point faster than Schwinger”.
This edition has been printed on the 60th anniversary of the Cornell lectures, and includes a
foreword by science historian David Kaiser, as well as notes from Dyson’s lectures at the Les
Houches Summer School of Theoretical Physics in 1954. The Les Houches lectures, described as
a supplement to the original Cornell notes, provide a more detailed look at field theory, a careful
and rigorous derivation of Fermi’s Golden Rule, and a masterful treatment of renormalization and
Ward’s Identity.
Future generations of physicists are bound to read these lectures with pleasure, benefiting from
the lucid style that is so characteristic of Dyson’s exposition.
Readership: Physicists, graduate and undergraduate students.
About the AuthorFreeman Dyson is Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is the
author of eight books and the recipient of numerous awards including the Enrico Fermi Award by
the U.S. Department of Energy in 1995 and the 2000 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion.
Renowned physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson is famous for his work in quantum
mechanics, nuclear weapons policy and bold visions for the future of humanity. In the 1940s,
he was responsible for demonstrating the equivalence of the two formulations of quantum
electrodynamics — Richard Feynman’s diagrammatic path integral formulation and the variational
methods developed by Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonoga — showing the mathematical
consistency of QED.

LET THERE BE LIGHTThe Story of Light from Atoms to Galaxies
(Second Edition)by Ann Breslin (University College Dublin, Ireland) & Alex Montwill (University College Dublin, Ireland)
This book is the first of its kind devoted to the key role played by light and electromagnetic radiation
in the universe. Readers are introduced to philosophical hypotheses such as the economy,
symmetry and the universality of natural laws, and are then guided to practical consequences such
as the rules of geometrical optics and even Einstein’s well-known but mysterious relationship, E =
mc2. Most chapters feature a pen picture of the life and character of a relevant scientific figure.
These ‘Historical Interludes’ include, among others, Galileo’s conflicts with the Inquisition, Fourier’s
taunting of the guillotine, Neils Bohr and World War II, and the unique character of Richard Feynman.
The second edition has been revised and made more accessible to the general reader. Whenever
possible, the mathematical material of the first edition has been replaced by appropriate text
to give a verbal account of the mystery of the phenomenon of light and how its understanding
has developed from pre-historic to present times. The emphasis is on reading for interest and
enjoyment; formulae or equations which underpin and reinforce the argument are presented in a
form which does not interfere with the flow of the text.
The book will be of interest to students and teachers, as well as general readers interested in
physics.

NATURE LOVES TO HIDEQuantum Physics and the Nature of Reality, a Western Perspective
(Revised Edition)by Shimon Malin (Colgate University, USA)
Reviews of the First Edition
“It will be informative and challenging to scientists and philosophers, and yet it is accessible to
general readers.” Abner Shimony
American Journal of Physics
“A fascinating introduction to the strange world of quantum physics and its wider implications.”
Christian Science Monitor
“The driving contention of this exciting book, the need for science to ‘give up its self-sufficiency and
the self-sufficiency of reason’ is as breathtakingly thorough as it is humane and stylishly written.”
Lia Purpura
The Antioch Review
It is naturally important for any of us to have a correct view of the universe we are in. Having
realized that the Newtonian world-view is untenable, this book joins others that are searching for
an alternative world-view. It is unique in using quantum physics to promote this search.
One aim of the book is to present a lucid exposition of quantum mechanics in terms accessible
to the general reader. Another aim is to show that realism (the belief that the outside world exists
“from its own side” regardless of acts of consciousness) and locality (the belief that nothing
moves faster than light) are invalid, and should be replaced by a new paradigm according to which
the universe is alive. A third aim is to show that the thinking of quantum physicists evokes the
philosophies of Plato and Plotinus.
The revised edition will include a conversation between two fictional characters to elucidate the
discussion of the meaning of wave functions.

THE NEUTRONA Tool and an Object in Nuclear and Particle Physicsby Hans G Börner (Institut Laue Langevin, France) & Friedrich Gönnenwein (University of Tübingen, Germany)
The reactor-based laboratory at the Institut Laue-Langevin is recognized as the world’s most
productive and reliable source of slow neutrons for the study of low energy particle and nuclear
physics. The book highlightsthe impact of about 600 very diverse publications about work
performedin these fields during the pastmore than 30 years of reactor operation at this institute.
On one hand neutronsare used as a tool to generate nuclei in excited states for studying their
structure and decay, in particular fission. Uniquely sensitive experiments can tell us a great deal
about the symmetry characteristics of nucleiand their fission properties. On the other hand, studies
with slowneutrons as the object of investigation are complementary to studies at huge particle
accelerators. Experiments carried out at the ILL contribute to elucidate basic questions about the
building blocks of the Universe by analyzing very precisely subtle neutron properties.
Readership: Researchers, postgraduates and graduate students in the nuclear and particle physics.
THE QUANTUM ADVENTUREDoes God Play Dice?by Alex Montwill (University College Dublin, Ireland) & Ann Breslin (University College Dublin, Ireland)
The Quantum Adventure deals with the birth and growth of quantum mechanics. It explains the
“classical dilemma” which faced physics at the start of the 20th Century and goes on to show
how quantum mechanics emerged and flourished. Difficult and abstract concepts are treated with
minimal mathematics and maximal physical imagery. Snippets of information about the dramatis
personae are woven into the text and add color to what is traditionally perceived as a complex and
challenging topic. A must-read for anyone interested in quantum physics.

ics PHYSICAL BASIS OF PLASTICITY IN SOLIDS
by Jean-Claude Tolédano (Ecole Polytechnique, France)
This book introduces the physical mechanism of the plastic deformation of solids, which relies
essentially on the occurrence and motion of dislocations. These are linear defects, specific of
crystalline solids whose motion under external stresses explains the relative ease by which solids
(metals in particular) can be deformed in order to give them desired shapes. The objective is to
introduce the topic to undergraduate students, restricting to the main ideas and showing their
relevance in interpreting phenomena well known to everyone (e.g. why are certain metals harder
than others?), and finally training the students in the practice of calculating the simplest properties
of dislocations.

QUANTUM COMPUTING FROM THE GROUND UPby Riley Tipton Perry (University of New South Wales, Australia)
Quantum computing — the application of quantum mechanics to information — represents a
fundamental break from classical information and promises to dramatically increase a computer’s
power. Many difficult problems, such as the factorization of large numbers, have so far resisted
attack by classical computers yet are easily solved with quantum computers. If they become
feasible, quantum computers will end standard practices such as RSA encryption.
Most of the books or papers on quantum computing require (or assume) prior knowledge of
certain areas such as linear algebra or quantum mechanics. The majority of the currently-available
literature is hard to understand for the average computer enthusiast or interested layman. This text
attempts to teach quantum computing from the ground up in an easily readable way, providing a
comprehensive tutorial that includes all the necessary mathematics, computer science and physics.

WHY SCIENCE?To know, to Understand, and to Rely on Resultsby Roger G Newton (Indiana University, USA)
This book aims to describe, for readers uneducated in science, the development of humanity’s
desire to know and understand the world around us through the various stages of its development
to the present, when science is almost universally recognized — at least in the Western world — as
the most reliable way of knowing. The book describes the history of the large-scale exploration of
the surface of the earth by sea, beginning with the Vikings and the Chinese, and of the unknown
interiors of the American and African continents by foot and horseback. After the invention of the
telescope, visual exploration of the surfaces of the Moon and Mars were made possible, and
finally a visit to the Moon. The book then turns to our legacy from the ancient Greeks of wanting
to understand rather than just know, and why the scientific way of understanding is valued. For
concreteness, it relates the lives and accomplishments of six great scientists, four from the
nineteenth century and two from the twentieth. Finally, the book explains how chemistry came to
be seen as the most basic of the sciences, and then how physics became the most fundamental.
Readership: Readers at all levels of inquiry.

THE WONDERS OF PHYSICS(3rd Edition)by Andrey Varlamov (Italian National Research Council, Italy) & Lev Aslamazov (Moscow Technological University, Russia)
The book in your hands develops the best traditions of Russian scientific popular literature. Written
in a clear and captivating manner by working theoretical physicists, who are, at the same time,
dedicated popularizers of scientific knowledge, it brings to the reader the latest achievements
in quantum solid-state physics, but along the way also shows how the laws of physics reveal
themselves even in seemingly trivial episodes concerning the natural phenomena around us. Most
importantly, it shows that we live in a world where scientists are capable of “proving harmony with
algebra”. — A A Abrikosov, 2003 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics

exciting examples of applications of recent achievements of physics in medicine, nanotechnologies,
and physics in cuisine.

THE SCIENCE OF ENERGYby Roger G Newton (Indiana University, USA)
This book aims to describe the scientific concepts of energy. Accessible to readers with no
scientific education beyond high-school chemistry, it starts with the basic notion of energy and the
fundamental laws that govern it, such as conservation, and explains the various forms of energy,
such as electrical, chemical, and nuclear. It then proceeds to describe ways in which energy is
stored for very long times in the various fossil fuels (petroleum, gas, coal) as well as for short
times (flywheels, pumped storage, batteries, fuel cells, liquid hydrogen). The book also discusses
the modes of transport of energy, especially those of electrical energy via lasers and transmission
lines, as well as why the latter uses alternating current at high voltages. The altered view of energy
introduced by quantum mechanics is also discussed, as well as how almost all the Earth’s energy
originates from the Sun. Finally, the history of the forms of energy in the course of development of
the universe is described, and how this form changed from pure radiation in the aftermath of the
Big Bang to the creation of all the chemical elements in the world.
