The Daily News of TV Sales Wednesday, March 28, 2018 FORECASTERS SEE UP ARROWS FOR 2018 ADVERTISING TV & ONLINE FORGING ‘DOMINANT’ MEDIAALLIANCE Four in ten small and medium-sized businesses—the sort that makes up the bulk of local broadcast and cable ad sales—expect they’ll increase their ad spending by anywhere from 5% to 30% this year. And the vast majority says no cutbacks are planned. Borrell Associates latest survey of SMBs finds that 2% even predict they’ll boost their ad budgets by more than 30% this year. However a majority 52% of the 173 businesses surveyed said their ad budgets will be similar to what they spent in 2017. A small number—just 5%—forecast their business will pull back on marketing this year. The latest Borrell forecast predicts overall local advertising spending will increase 5.3% in 2018. A big reason for that increase are the political ad dollars destined to be placed on local TV stations and cable MSOs during the mid-term election year. But for local cable TV that won’t be enough to offset other declines and Borrell thinks that segment will see billings decline 10.5% this year. Local broadcast TV on the other hand is projected to grow 12.7% by year-end. Meanwhile, Zenith has released an updated forecast of its own that takes a look at the big picture. It projects total ad spending to grow 3.4% this year in North America. And it says ad spending will increase an average 3.2% through 2020. “The U.S. will be the leading contributor of new ad dollars to the global market over the next three years, making up in scale what it lacks in speed,” the report said. Zenith reports online advertising overtook traditional television to become the world’s largest advertising medium last year. The Publicis unit estimates 37.6% of ad dollars went to the internet compared to a still-robust 34.1% for TV. And Zenith projects TV’s share will slip to 31.2% in 2020, the medium’s lowest share since 1981. Yet the agency thinks television will remain “the pre-eminent brand awareness channel” for the foreseeable future. Direct response ad dollars may be shifting to paid search online, but it sees the two mediums working in tandem. “The two can complement each other, for example by running paid search activity to take advantage of the increase in searches driven by a television campaign,” Zenith says. The agency says when internet classified and search are taken out of the picture, it believes TV will remain the “principal display medium for many years to come.” It estimates TV accounted for 42.3% of display spending last year and thinks it’ll grab a 39.8% share in 2020. Zenith also says TV and online video are consolidating a dominant share of display ad dollars in the market. “Television offers unparalleled capacity to build reach, while online video offers pinpoint targeting and the potential for personalization of marketing messages,” the report says. “Both are powerful tools for establishing brand awareness and associations.” ADVERTISER NEWS Southeastern Grocers, the Florida-based operator of supermarket chains Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to restructure debt..... Niblock, a 25-year veteran of Lowe’s, will stay on until the company finds a replacement. While both Home Depot and Lowe’s have benefited enormously from the home improvement boom caused by increasing home values and the aging housing stock in the United States, Lowe’s has not been as adept at capitalizing on that. AMAZON NEW SURVEY UNDERWAY Amazon has commissioned a survey to learn more about how their users consume TV news. According to Recode, the company has hired Qualtrics to learn more about how people “experience the news.” Amazon offers a Fire TV video service, so they may be trying to gain insight into viewing both online and on linear TV. A lot of the questions have to do very specifically with the news their users are consuming on TV. Their questions included things like “How frequently do you watch the news?” and “What kind of news — local, national, or international — do you care about?” They also asked about specific news sources.

STRONG EASTER SPENDING THIS YEAR Easter comes very early this year—next Sunday, April 1. Nonetheless, the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & analytics say spending by Americans is expected to total $18.2 billion. That’s the second highest level ever and down only slightly from last year’s record $18.4 billion. “Consumer spending remains healthy both for this holiday and this spring, and that paints an optimistic picture for the U.S. economy in the year ahead.” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. According to the survey, consumers will spend $5.7 billion on food (purchased by 87% of shoppers), $3.2 billion on clothing (48%), $2.9 billion on gifts (61%), $2.6 billion on candy (89%), $1.3 billion on flowers (39%), $1.1 billion on decorations (42%) and $780 million on greeting cards (46%). In preparation for the Easter holiday, 59% of consumers will shop at discount stores, 46% will visit department stores, 28% will make purchases online, 25% will go to a specialty store and 25% will go to a small business or local store. Among smartphone users, 30% will research products or compare prices on their devices while 19% will use their phones to make a purchase. The Easter Bunny is expected to have a busy holiday season: 35% of consumers will participate in an Easter egg hunt and 16% will open gifts. In addition to traditional holiday events, some consumers will pursue more leisurely activities: 45% will watch TV, 11% will shop online, 9% will shop in a store and 8% will go to a movie.

TV UNDERVALUED? TV advertising may be under-valued, according to a report by analytical firm Data + Math (DM). CEO John Hoctor told Multichannel News: “TV drives results across verticals and across outcome measures.” According to their research, big box retailer sales increased 5 to 12 percent due to TV advertising, auto sales increased 19 to 24 percent, and online retail sales increased 15 to 32 percent. “We’ve done the math for TV,” Hoctor said. “TV is massively under-credited. TV is undervalued.” DM also found that the fourth and fifth exposure to a TV commercial lifts sales more than the current standard of three. Hoctor said, “You don’t just have to be on TV. You have to be on TV a lot.” The research also found that TV advertising will need to embrace data to compete with digital ad networks like Google and Facebook.
