MISSION The fundamental purpose of the Tuskegee University Library System is to acquire, organize and disseminate information which supports the educational program of the University and which prepares the student to function responsibly as an individual within society. The library’s mission statement is clearly related to and consistent with the institutional purpose. The University’s mission statement specifies those goals, which define the institution; it places the school in its own unique niche.

Introduction The Tuskegee University Ford Motor Company Library/Learning Resource Center was dedicated on March 15, 2001, at the Hollis Burke Frissell Library Building. The official name change was the result of the completion of a 4.5 million dollar renovation to the Hollis Burke Frissell Library facility. The Hollis Burke Frissell Building was built in 1932 and named in honor of the late Dr. Hollis Burke Frissell, second principal of Hampton Institute. The new Ford Motor Company Library/Learning Resource Center is consistent with the many technological changes today in Library and Information Science. Additionally, there are three departmental libraries located in their respective areas of Architecture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine. Currently, the main library collection contains over 335,000 volumes of books and bound journals, over 1,400 subscriptions to magazines and journals, at least twenty newspapers, over 95,000 microforms and over 30,000 government documents. Numerous general and subject databases are accessible online through the library’s web site www.tuskegee.edu/libraries. Off-campus access is available for users with a valid Tuskegee University username and password. The Tuskegee University Library System is designed to serve the study, teaching and research needs of Tuskegee University students, faculty and staff. This guide to the Ford Motor Company Library/Learning Resource Center includes a directory of department locations, telephone numbers, hours of operation, floor plans of the Main Library building and a listing of services available. All Library users are asked to follow Library Policies and Procedures. Study areas, photocopiers and water fountains are available on each floor. There are two group study rooms, accommodating 12 to 15 students located on the first and third floor of the library. Public Access Workstations (PAWs) are available in all the service areas and departmental libraries for library-related research and do not contain productivity software such as Microsoft Office. Access to these workstations may be restricted to Tuskegee University students, faculty, and staff. Wireless access is available throughout the Library for users with laptops equipped with a wireless Ethernet card.

Circulation The Circulation/Reserve Division is located on the first floor of the Ford Motor Company Library/Learning Resource Center. All materials from the library must be checked out at the circulation desk. Each patron must present a current Tuskegee University ID card to check out library materials. Students may borrow a book for thirty days. However, members of Tuskegee University faculty may borrow items for the entire semester. A limit of ten books may be checked out.

Circulation Desk

Reserve Room The Reserve Room contains materials that have been put on “reserve” by instructors as required reading for students in their courses. Students can check to see if materials have been placed on reserve through the online catalog. Items on reserve can be searched by: course number, instructor, title and subject. Patrons must again present a valid T.U. ID card to utilize these materials. The Reserve Room also houses newspapers, phone directories, and popular magazines. There is also a collection of popular and recreational reading materials in the Reserve Room. Patrons are allowed to check out these books.

Government Documents

The Library was designated a Federal Depository Library in 1907. Depository library programs are effective means for providing wide dispersal of and free public access to government information. The primary mission of this department is to provide access to information resources that support the educational and research needs of the students, faculty and staff of Tuskegee University. Although we receive publications from all agencies of the Federal Government, subjects selected most comprehensively are from the departments of Agriculture, Education, Health and Human Services. Formats include, but are not limited to, paper, microfiche, maps, and electronic products.

In addition, the collection addresses the needs of the 3rd Congressional District of Alabama by providing unrestricted access to public information in a variety of media, either on-site or from remote locations. The Government Documents Division is conveniently located on the 1st floor of the library. The reading room of Government Documents is conducive for reading and studying. Public Access Workstations (PAWS) are accessible for printing, downloading from CD-ROMs and government database access via the WWW. Bibliographic Instruction (B.I. Lab) Bibliographic Instruction encompasses all activities designed to teach the library user about library resources and research techniques. Course-related instruction is the usual method of teaching. The instructor schedules a class for library instruction during one or two sessions of his/her class time. The librarian prepares a bibliography of the appropriate library resources for the course or topic assigned and students are shown how to effectively navigate databases and utilize other library resources to retrieve the information relevant to their research topics. Freshmen orientation sessions are designed to introduce new students to our library resources and services. A Power Point presentation provides them with a general overview of our library's catalog and other electronic databases. A typical session consists of an orientation/tour of the library facility, a PowerPoint presentation and a syllabus/bibliography of the appropriate library resources for the course or topic assigned. The BI classroom can accommodate a small class of students or a small group for formal instruction. Large groups may be divided into more than one session or they may use the computer lab on the third floor of the main library.

Additionally, the Bibliographic Instruction classroom is used by members of the faculty and staff for training purposes. The library staff welcomes this integrative spirit of cooperation among the Tuskegee University Family.

Bibliographic Instruction Classroom (B.I. Lab)

Reference Division The Reference Division, located on the second floor, is responsible for providing a variety of services to assist the Tuskegee University community. In addition to formal library instruction offered by the Bibliographic Instruction Division, the Reference staff provides individualized consultation to help develop and focus on research strategies; utilizing computerized searching of the online catalog and databases the library subscribes to via the Internet. The Reference Collection contains materials ranging from general background information (e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica) to more detailed and subject-oriented information such as Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, Encyclopedia of Business and Finance, Encyclopedia of Psychology, Encyclopedia of Sociology and the Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family. Also, subject indexes, dictionaries and handbooks can be found in the Reference collection. In addition, there is a strong collection of critical sources in the humanities. Materials in the Reference collection cannot be checked out. The Reference Collection also houses all Master Theses written by the graduate students of Tuskegee University.

ONLINE CATALOG / DATABASES

The library’s online catalog is an index to all the books, journals and other materials the library offers. The catalog is accessible via the worldwide web. The search interface is user-friendly and offers fast delivery. One can search by author, title, subject and keyword. To access the library’s catalog, simply type the University’s URL. Instructions:

Learning Resource Center (LRC Lab) InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Processing – Materials not owned by Tuskegee University can be obtained from other universities through InterLibrary Loan. Articles are usually received in three to five days, and books are received in four to seven days. There is no charge for items obtained from universities in Alabama. You can access the ILL form (pdf) on the Library homepage and fax it to 727-9282. (Online form will be available soon.) Media – The library has an extensive collection of non-print resources (DVDs, CDs, videos, cassette tapes, filmstrips, slides, records, etc.) and equipment to support the total instructional program at Tuskegee University. A viewing room is available to view media materials in the library or they can be checked out for classroom presentations. Sub-Computer Lab – The LRC serves as a sub-computer lab for the library. Six computer workstations are available for student use. Typewriters are also available in the LRC.

LRC Lab

Washington Room / Rare Book Room The Washington Room, located on the third floor, named in honor of Booker T. Washington, contains materials that are “by and about Black People.” It is comprised of over 30,000 volumes and several microform sets. Although, its strongest holdings are in African-American history and literature, materials about Africa and the entire Black Diaspora are included. Adjacent to the Washington Room is the Rare Book Room. The rare book collection is comprised of books published before 1900, books published in limited editions, valuable first editions and autographed books. It contains a sizeable collection of abolitionist literature. All publications by and about the Presidents of Tuskegee University and George Washington Carver are housed in the collection. Also, a large collection of pamphlets dealing primarily with racial issues is housed in the Rare Book Room.

Computer Laboratory

Located on the third floor of the main library is the Computer Lab, which offers students access to online information retrieval, word processing, data management, publishing, and presentation capability. The lab is equipped with forty-two personal computer workstations offering high-speed Internet access, wireless networking capability, a scanner, a video cassette/DVD player and a ceiling-mounted video projector for instruction and demonstration purposes.

In addition to up-to-date application software, the lab is also networked so students can access TU Online (Blackboard) for coursework, TigerWeb to access course and account information, TigerNet for e-mail/communication purposes, as well as the library’s online catalog. The Computer Lab also offers access to many online journal subscriptions, databases and numerous other Internet resources needed for research and educational purposes. The Computer Lab is handicap accessible and the workstations are equipped to handle physically challenged users.

Architecture 727-4269

The Architecture Library is located on the first floor of Wilcox-C and is designed to serve the research needs of the students and faculty in the Department of Architecture. The Architecture Library houses a collection of over 12,000 books and subscribes to over 100 journals in architecture and related areas. The Engineering Library and Main library (Ford Motor Company Library) provide supplemental resources. Indexes located in the Architecture Library include: Architecture Index, Art Index, Construction Index, NA Index and the Avery Index to Architecture Periodicals. The library also has the following indexes on CD-ROM: Avery Index, Graphics Standards Index and the Sweet Catalog. A collection of slides and drawings of the campus and off campus buildings are also available. Computers are located in the library for Internet and database searching. A microfilm/reader printer and a photocopier are available.

Engineering 727-8901

The Engineering Library is located on the second floor of the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Physical Science (CEAPS), Luther Hilton Foster Hall and is designed to serve the research needs of the students and faculty in the School of Engineering. The library houses a collection of over 11,000 books, over 3,500 bound periodicals and subscribes to over 200 journals in Engineering and related areas. The Architecture Library and the Ford Motor Company Library provide supplemental resources. Online resources include Engineering Village 2, the Oxford University Journals Online and ScienceDirect. Additional resources available are the Engineering and IEEE Indexes and the Electrical and Electronic Abstracts.

Computers are located in the library for Internet and database searching and a photocopier is available.

Veterinary Medicine 727-8307

The T.S. Williams Veterinary Medical Library is located on the main entry level of Patterson Hall, College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health complex. The collection covers the subject areas of large and small animal medicine and surgery (clinical sciences), biomedical sciences, and pathobiology. Currently, the total holdings are over 31,000 volumes, which include 18,800 volumes in monographs, 400 journal titles, 3,021 volumes in microfilm, and 8,877 volumes of bound journals. InterLibrary Loan, document delivery, and bibliographic instruction are services offered to faculty, staff and students. Additionally, audiovisual materials can be located in the Audiovisual/Autotutorial Laboratory, which is located in the Williams/Bowie Hall, College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health complex. The collection covers veterinary medicine, surgery and other related areas. There are currently over 3,552 volumes in the audiovisual collection. Computers are located in the library for Internet and database searching and a photocopier is available.

The functions of the Tuskegee University Archives, located in Charles Drew Hall, are to preserve the history of the University and Afro-Americans, and to organize and describe the materials so that they are readily available for research. The manuscript collection includes some of the papers of Booker T. Washington, Robert R. Moton, Frederick D. Patterson, Luther H. Foster, George Washington Carver, Albon L. Holsey, Thomas M. Campbell, Isaac Fisher, The Southern Conference Educational Fund, The Southern Courier and other distinguished persons and organizations.
