Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost

August 16, 2020

Visitors and members—Welcome to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church! We’re glad you’re here and pray that you experience God’s kindness with us in worship.

At St. Paul’s, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, all baptized persons are welcome at Holy Communion—the Altar is God’s table. While the services are online, we are using individual Communion cups that can be picked up ahead of time at church when the office is open. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. We will announce Communion dates ahead of time.

In Isaiah we hear that God’s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today’s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need.

Today’s Readings

Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 - On Mount Horeb, where God had appeared to Moses with typical signs of God’s presence—earthquake, wind, and fire—Elijah now experienced God in “sheer silence.” God assured Elijah that he is not the only faithful believer. Seven thousand Israelites are still loyal. God instructed Elijah to anoint two men as kings and to anoint Elisha as his own successor.

Psalm 67 - I will listen to what the Lord God is saying. (Ps. 85:8)

Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 - A right relationship with God is not something we achieve by heroic efforts. It is a gift received in the proclamation whose content is Jesus Christ. This proclaimed word creates our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hence Christian proclamation is an indispensable component of God’s saving actions.

Matthew 15:10-28 - Matthew’s gospel typically portrays Jesus’ disciples as people of “little faith,” who fail despite their best intentions. In this story, Matthew shows how Jesus comes to the disciples when they are in trouble and sustains them in their time of fear and doubt.

St. Paul’s Mission Statement

Rooted in God's unconditional love, the congregation of Saint Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, commits mind, body, spirit, and treasure to encourage all people to become disciples of

Christ, to share God's abundance, and to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed.

Pandemic Ponderings The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the way we live - temporarily or perhaps permanently. We are living through an historic time and we feel it is important to document

this time for future generations. The Legacy Committee is inviting everyone in the congregation to share your pandemic story. We would like to hear how this lockdown has affected your life, the ways you and your family are dealing with it and how you think it could create a ‘new normal’ for all of us. You can write a short essay, a poem, create artwork—the best way you know how to share your story. Please either email your story to Rosanne at [email protected] or send it to her at the church office. Thank you.

Hymn of the Day In Christ There is No East or West 650

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he

descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Prayers of Intercession L: Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the

world, and all who are in need.

A brief silence.

L: Lord, you gather the church to be part of your mission as ambassadors of Jesus

Christ. As Jesus acknowledged the great faith of a woman from outside his people,

help your church discover and find blessing in the faith of people we might reject.

Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: You have blessed us with the bounty of the earth. Grant your grace to all your

creatures, that the earth will flourish. Relieve waters choked by garbage, renew soils

stripped of nutrients, and refresh the air all creatures need to live. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: You call the nations to be glad and sing for joy. Let your way be known among all

the nations of the world, now divided by competing interests, contending alliances,

and consumed by enormous worry. Bless us and make your face shine upon all. Lord,

in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: You show unexpected mercy, kindness, and generosity. We pray for those who do

not have enough, for outcasts in our villages, cities, and town, and for those who need

your healing especially those afflicted with or recovering from covid-19. Lord, in your

mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: God of wisdom and learning; you have given us a light for our paths. As teachers,

school staff, and children prepare for a challenging academic year we pray for

strength and safety, diligence and perseverance that all may praise you. Lord, in your

mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: Living God of the past, present, and future, you are our Rock of Ages. Be with the

pastor who you know is best for St. Paul’s in the years ahead. May the Holy Spirit fill

her or him with the understanding and desire to share in the ministry of this

congregation. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

L: In you we live and move and have our being. Grant St. Paul’s grace to find our life

refreshed in you. Accompany us in the rhythms of late summer. Give us rest and

renewal, and strengthen us for mission in your name. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. L: Your eternal promises are more than we could ever imagine. As you gather all the

saints especially Elsa and Nancy, join us also with them on the great day of your

salvation. Lord, in your mercy,

C: hear our prayer. P: In the certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love, we offer these

prayers to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

Offering Praise You With the Dance

Offering Prayer L: We have been blessed by God in more ways than we can count. Help us

always to share our blessings in loving service to our neighbors.

L: Let us pray. C: God of goodness and growth, all creation is yours, and your faithfulness

is as firm as the heavens. Water and word are signs of your abundant grace.

Nourish us through these gifts, that we might proclaim your steadfast love in

our communities and in the world, through Jesus Christ, our strength and

our song. Amen

The Great Thanksgiving

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Words of Institution

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for

you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the

forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

The Lord’s Prayer, page 154

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be

done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as

we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us

from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

Amen.

Invitation to Communion P: Friends of Jesus; receive Christ’s body and blood - nourishment for your journey.

C: Thanks be to God.

Table Blessing P: The body of our Lord Jesus Christ and his precious blood strengthen you and

keep you in God’s grace.

C: Amen.

Prayer after Communion L: Let us pray.

C: God of the welcome table, in this meal we have feasted on your goodness

and have been united by your presence among us. Empower us to go forth

sustained by these gifts so that we may share your neighborly love with all,

through Jesus Christ, the giver of abundant life. Amen.

Blessing P: Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to

come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be

able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. God, the

creator, ☩ Jesus, the Christ, and Holy Spirit, the comforter, bless you and keep

you in eternal love.

C: Amen.

Sunday, August 16, 2020

11th Sunday after Pentecost

First Reading: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 1Thus says the LORD: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 6And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant— 7these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 8Thus says the Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered.

Psalm: Psalm 67 1May God be merciful to us and bless us; may the light of God’s face shine upon us. 2Let your way be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. 3Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 4Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations on earth. 5Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 6The earth has brought forth its increase; God, our own God, has blessed us. 7May God give us blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe.

Page 8: For Your Information—For Your Inspiration News & Notes for ... · St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 910 Marne Highway Hainesport, New Jersey 08036-2666 Office Phone: 609.267.0740

Second Reading: Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 [Paul writes:] 1I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2aGod has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, 31so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. 32For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all.

Gospel: Matthew 15:10-28 10[Jesus] called the crowd to him and said to them, “Listen and understand:11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.” 12Then the disciples approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?” 13He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.” 15But Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.” 16Then he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? 18But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. 19For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. 20These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.” 21Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

All Glory Be to Christ

Should nothing of our efforts stand

No legacy survive

Unless the Lord does raise the house

In vain its builders strive

To you who boast

tomorrow's gain

Tell me what is your life

A mist that vanishes at dawn

All glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king!

All glory be to Christ!

His rule and reign will ever sing

All glory be to Christ!

His will be done

His kingdom come

On earth as is above

Who is Himself our daily bread

Praise Him the Lord of love

Let living water satisfy

The thirsty without price

We'll take a cup of kindness yet

All glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king!

All glory be to Christ!

His rule and reign will ever sing

All glory be to Christ!

When on the day the great I Am

The faithful and the true

The Lamb who was for sinners slain

Is making all things new

Behold our God shall live with us

And be our steadfast light

And we shall ere his people be

All glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king!

All glory be to Christ!

His rule and reign will ever sing

All glory be to Christ!

All Are Welcome #641

Let us build a house where love can dwell

and all can safely live,

a place where saints and children tell

how hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions,

rock of faith and vault of grace;

here the love of Christ shall end divisions:

Refrain

All are welcome, all are welcome,

all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak,

and words are strong and true,

where all God's children dare to seek

to dream God's reign anew.

Here the cross shall stand as witness

and as symbol of God's grace;

here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: Refrain

Let us build a house where love is found

in water, wine and wheat:

a banquet hall on holy ground

where peace and justice meet.

Here the love of God, through Jesus,

is revealed in time and space;

as we share in Christ the feast that frees us:

Refrain

Let us build a house where hands will reach

beyond the wood and stone

to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,

and live the Word they've known.

Here the outcast and the stranger

bear the image of God's face;

let us bring an end to fear and danger: Refrain

Let us build a house where all are named,

their songs and visions heard

and loved and treasured, taught and claimed

as words within the Word.

Built of tears and cries and laughter,

prayers of faith and songs of grace,

let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:

Refrain

are surely kin to me.

In Christ now meet both east and west,

in him meet south and north;

all Christly souls are one in him

throughout the whole wide earth.

My gracious Master and my God,

assist me to proclaim,

to spread through all the earth abroad

the honors of your name.

The name of Jesus charms our fears

and bids ours sorrows cease,

sings music in the sinner's ears,

brings life and health and peace.

He speaks, and list'ning to his voice,

new life the dead receive;

the mournful, broken hearts rejoice,

the humble poor believe.

Look unto him, your Savior own,

O fallen human race!

Look and be saved through faith alone,

be justified by grace!

To God all glory, praise, and love

be now and ever giv'n

by saints below and saints above,

the church in earth and heav'n.
