Student Housing Fairs for Continuing Students

Thinking about your home for next academic year?

To help you, this year’s Accommodation Fairs will be held in:

Chelmsford, Thursday 3 March 2011, 13:00–15:00, Michael Ashcroft Reception

Anglia Ruskin University

Cambridge, Friday 4 March 2011, 13:00–15:00, Helmore Restaurant

The fair will coincide with the 2011/2012 private sector student accommodation listings launch on www.angliastudentpad.co.uk

You’ll be able to meet and compare agencies and landlords, and speak to other services such as the local council, police and environmental health. You can also collect information about house hunting including tenancy deposit schemes and what to do and where to go if things go wrong.

We would strongly advise you not to sign a contract for the next academic year until after you have attended the Accommodation Fair.

Please don’t feel pressured by landlords to accept the first property you see, and don’t sign a contract until you fully understand it. If you have any accommodation related questions please visit the Accommodation Offices (Eastings in Cambridge and Ashby House Chelmsford) or con-tact a SU adviser.

When you’re choosing a new home, the first thing you often have to do after seeing a property you like, is hand over your deposit. Be cautious about committing to a property too early.

When you do sign, you will be handing over a large sum of your much needed money. This em-phasises the importance of the decision, and you must be sure about both the property and the people you will be sharing with when you commit.

When you’re moving in, you should take a full inventory of the house and its contents, including taking photos of its condition as evidence. If the landlord has promised improvements, make sure they are added to the contract before you sign and pay your deposit, otherwise the landlord is un-der no obligation to make them.

When you leave the house, you must leave it as you found it and again take photographic evi-dence of its condition as disputes will be more easily resolved. Even if you have an inventory and photographs there may still be disputes. This is where the tenancy deposit scheme helps protect you.

You can also check out our online resources to help you find safe and secure accommodation.

We hope to see you at our Accommodation Fairs in March.

It CAN pay to have your say! Congratulations to Patrick Wright, a first year Life Sciences student! He took the time to fill in the online survey about his experiences of Freshers’ Week 2010 and won himself £150 in cash when his name was drawn in the prize draw.

Other lucky winners include 9 students each of whom have claimed their prize of a £25 Amazon Voucher. The students were selected at random (on our be-half) by i-Graduate for completing the International Student Barometer Ques-tionnaire. Have you got an email from Lizi Milne informing you of this win in your student email account and haven’t claimed your prize yet? Get checking, and if you have one, please forward it to me, [email protected]

For several years the Community Development Office has run a volunteering referral service. Volunteering has provided our students with some amazing opportunities to gain valuable work experience in the local community. They have gained many transferable skills, such as organisation, communication and time management.

During the last two years we have seen a significant growth in students taking up volunteering. We have placed over 300 volunteers with charities and community groups in Cambridge and Chelmsford. The stu-dents have been involved in running local radio stations, helping at hospitals, befriending and mentoring, fundraising, financial and accounting assistance, teaching support and working with young offenders and

other vulnerable groups in society. We helped guide and support our students in choosing opportunities which benefit their academic learning and personal interest.

January 2011 sees the next step of the delivery of this exciting opportunity for our students as the function moves to the Students’ Union. As a front facing service to our student body this move provides the oppor-tunity to grow this important activity even further.

Community Development staff provided the SU with a comprehensive handover of processes, contacts and experience, and we are confident that the volunteering activity at Anglia Ruskin will be in good hands.

Community Development as a function has now merged with the External Liaison Team, and we are cur-rently developing an exciting new Community Outreach focus for this activity in line with our Corporate Plan – so watch this space.

Students’ Union Take Over Volunteering The Students’ Union is delighted to be taking over Volunteering and is excited about providing stu-dents with the opportunity to enhance their skills and to give them the extra attributes employers are looking for.

We are happy to welcome two new part-time members of staff to the Unions’ team who will be dedi-cated volunteer coordinators. They will be starting shortly and you will find them in Helmore 125, Cambridge, and the Student Activities Centre on the 1st floor of the Tindal building, Chelmsford.

Recognition for students’ volunteering is also essential; a Student Representative Accreditation mod-ule is currently being piloted through the University and it is hoped that over time the module will ap-pear on students’ transcripts to recognise time spent volunteering as a Student Rep. The Union hopes to roll this accreditation out to all students involved in any form of volunteering activity.

The Union plans to work with a variety of organisations to offer the students connections to a variety of business and community organisations to provide them with relevant volunteering opportunities to improve their employability. There is also scope for students to start up their own volunteering projects to gain project manage-ment and leadership skills.

The Union would also love to hear from Faculties so that we can target volunteering activity that fits with courses delivered and the expected career paths of our students.

Any students that are interested in volunteering can register their interest on the Students’ Union web-site: http://angliastudent.com/volunteering/hello

Or for more information please contact Jo Harbrow, Student Experience Manager (Activities): [email protected]

Wed 16 - Thursday 24 March

Ruskin Gallery and Balcony

Private View: Thursday 17 March, 5pm

This exhibition provides an opportunity to view the work in pro-gress of artists from the MA Printmaking at Cambridge School of Art.

The show platforms the quality and diversity of work on the Masters degree programme and the creative directions of the individual artists. A wide range of print technologies are demonstrated in the work of stu-dents from across the programme. The work demonstrates the expanding potential of print media as a powerful image-making tool for fine art research and practice. The artists in the show come from a wide range of creative backgrounds, including fine art painting, design, illustration, photography and textiles. In each case however, they have been drawn towards printmaking as a dynamic research tool.

Chelmer Valley Park and Ride—Coming Soon!

Good news, if you travel to our Chelmsford campus! Buses will start running between campus and the new Chelmer Valley Park and Ride from 1 April.

Chelmsford’s second park and ride site will be located to the east of Essex Regiment Way (accessed from Pratts Farm Roundabout).

Seven hundred spaces will be available, as well as covered cycle parking facilities for 20 bikes. The Park and Ride buses will come straight to our doorstep on Chelmsford campus to help make commuting in easier.

We are thrilled by the opening of the new park and ride, which will help to alleviate local air pollu-tion, congestion and pressures on limited parking - in turn reducing our travel carbon footprint. At Anglia Ruskin we are firmly committed to doing all we can to reduce the environmental impact of traffic travelling to our university. One of our core values is to ensure that concern for a sustain-able environment informs every aspect of what we do. This encompasses travel to and from our campuses, and the activity taking place within them.

We have worked in partnership with Essex County Council to make this possible, and invested in major road works at and near our campus over the past year. Since January, we have been straightening the main campus road to allow the buses to come through. Last Summer, we built the Chelmer Valley Road junction to create a priority route-way to our campus for the buses.

Buses will run from 7am until after 9pm. Over the coming months, the council will build bus stops with real-time information.

Fares will be £2.20 return, £11 weekly and £42 monthly.

See timetables, and find out more about smart travel to all of our campuses at

New MA Film and Television Production course wins Channel 4 support Our new, year-long MA in Film and Television Production will run from September 2011. Taught by lecturers with years of experience in the BBC, Channel 4 and the independent TV sector, this Master’s degree will give you the media skills to communicate your subject to the world. Its focus is on factual pro-gramming: documentaries, educational programming, programming for campaigns. You will learn: how to produce broadcast-standard films; how to research your audiences; how to design, produce and direct programmes; all of the financial and commercial aspects of programme making that will equip you to sur-vive and prosper as a producer.

Working in groups, you will produce increasingly-complex programmes, culminating in a pilot for a re-searched and business-cased programme or series. You will this complete the course with a saleable as-set at your disposal.

As well as expert teaching from our own staff, you will have additional lectures and seminars, in Cam-bridge and London, from Channel 4’s editorial and business staff. They will also look at your proposals. 4Rights, the commercial arm of Channel 4, will make funds available to develop those pitches which it considers justify investment. Thus you will have privileged access to an important source of potential funding.

Dr David Hoyle, MA Convenor said of this link with Channel 4:

‘We’re delighted that Channel 4 and 4Rights have kindly offered to support our new MA in Film and Televi-sion Production. Having inputs and insights from experts at the heart of the TV world is a massive bonus for our students. And 4Rights’ kind offer to provide development funding for students whose work they consider worthy of investment is a huge benefit for this degree.’

The MA has also won support elsewhere in the industry with former Executive Producer for BBC Televi-sion and Managing Director of EfS Television Production Ltd, Peter Walton describing the course as ‘exactly the kind of degree the industry needs.’

For an informal discussion about this MA, please call Dr David Hoyle, Cambridge School of Art, on 0845 196 2087

Firemen on Facebook to keep you safe….

Green Watch at Cambridge Fire Station has launched a Facebook page to help them communicate with stu-dents in the city.

They aim to build a rapport with students in the city and to encourage you to think more carefully about fire safety and evacuation.

The page is designed to raise awareness of fire safety with you, in a fun and educational way.

They will be delivering snippets of fire safety advice, together with news about the firefighters on their watch. They want you to stay safe, not feel lectured (lectures are our job!)

Examples of the posts already on the Facebook page include:

Red watch attended a fire in student accommodation. It appeared the occupant was hanging T-Shirts to dry over a one bar electric heater. The clothes burnt through, then fell on the floor & continued to burn.

Their advice: Use the laundry room - They understand it's difficult to get your washing dry in this weather but this isn't the way to do it!! Fortunately no-one was hurt this time.

Events will include kitchen fire safety demonstrations and exercises, so you can practice evacuating quickly and safety from the building during a mock fire.

Firefighters also carry out familiarisation visits of its key buildings as – in the event of fire – it is vital that firefighters are aware of the layout and content of the buildings and can locate water supplies.

Supporting your journey - student to graduate recruit!

Josh Moore graduated from the Ashcroft International Busi-ness School, Chelmsford in 2010 with a BSc (Hons) Market-ing and, with the help of the Employment Bureau team, he started work as a Marketing Executive within weeks of com-pleting his exams. So, what’s the secret of Josh’s success in finding the perfect graduate job?

Josh had worked on a part-time, temporary basis via the Employment Bureau since 2008; his first job was as an extra on an episode of Police, Camera, Action! filmed in Chelmsford by Optomen TV. The subse-quent roles were not quite so glamorous: call centre operator, events assistant, graduation catering assis-tant, administrator etc. However, as Josh says, “I have been provided with numerous jobs which have supported me throughout my studies, kept my bank balance topped-up and offered many great experi-ences which all looked very good on my CV. I learnt a lot of people skills, boosted my career confidence and was prepared for the road ahead”.

In early 2010, Josh approached the Employment Bureau to work with him on finding a permanent job when he graduated. The team knew Josh well and talked with him to clarify the type of job he was aiming for as the first step on his career journey. When an Ipswich-based IT firm placed a vacancy for a Market-ing Executive with the Employment Bureau their consultants knew Josh was a great match; not only in terms of his academic qualifications, but also the skills and experience he acquired whilst doing part-time work.

After a couple of interviews, Josh was offered the job and started in July 2010. “The Employment Bureau found me a job working in marketing, which is a brilliant experience. Since getting the job, they have kept in close contact to ensure everything is ok, which is really good. I recommend the Employment Bureau service to every student”.
